even as we endure mass shootings, almost by the week. what does that say to you as a member of congress who can potentially have t work with one of them as president? i mean most gun owners want to see background checks and they are not even calling for that. >> what you see is a party tha is completely controlled by th extremists they are controlled by fear. fear of the nra. so they are putting thei political fortunes and fear at the nra in front of the safety the safety of school children. the safety of people who wan to go warship. the safety people who want t go to the movies these mass shootings tha mentioned earlier and make a lot of news and 85% of mas shootings reverend, are done with assault weapons having a ban on assault weapon for civilians is common sens gun reform as you mentioned earlier people who support gun rights, before gun owners themselves

they understand the danger tha these weapons pose we should not have weapons o war in the hands of civilians. and watching the republicans vying for presidents and their political ambitions, being afraid of the nra and this bowing down to them is shameful it really says one thing to, m again the contrast between democrats, who are about governing, safety, putting people first and the extremist of the gop were just trying to brought on to the nra and brin out the worse than people. it is shameful reverent, i really is. >> i was hard to see tennessee state represents justin jone and justin pierson bot reinstalled, reinstated to the state legislature this week. now senate democrats led b chuck schumer and senato raphael warnock are now callin on the justice department to determine whether th republican-led tennessee house violated the federal civil rights of these two democrat

along with article four, section for the first on the 14th amendment of the u.s. constitution do you agree with your senat colleagues at the doj needs to get involved here? absolutely reverend. this is well within th jurisdiction of the department of justice there was a mass shooting in tennessee and these thre members along with a lot o protesters were basicall standing up for families standing up for survivors an trying to get common sense gun laws and acted it's interesting to, rebrandin of the tennessee three, righ the to justin -- and the white woman. the two young black men were the ones who got expelled from their jobs and the only thin that really happen in this i that this whole case and the just cause of these two youn man was amplified. it was amplified globally. the microphones got a lo larger and a lot bigger becaus

of this unjust action. so, yes the doj should b investigating this because i many, ways it looks like straight-up discrimination i'll >> finally a congresswoman i want to make sure that we have time for one of the topics tha you came and that you care about and that is yo previously sponsored a bil that tackled food insecurity among our military service members. >> also you and senator warnoc both filed bills pushing for the defense department to clos the gap with u.s. troops basic housing allowances which i understand some tw thirds of our service member who don't live on the military bases rely on pay fo commercial housing now it looks like your bill is getting a bipartisan push in the house. what can you tell us >> so what i can tell you this is something that i introduced

in the last congress, bu what's different in this congress as you actually hav bipartisan and buy candidate support. just to give you som background, 70% of the peopl who served in the military d not live on base they get a housing allowance at one, time it was 100% it got reduced to 95%. that 95% of, rain actually means that some families hav to pay $200 or more out of pocket another factor i want to share with you as that 40% of th people who are enlisted in the military are people of color 20% of those who served ou african american so this is an issue of housing security, which hasn't impac on how much families have to spend on food. also it's an issue of equity if we want a strong, military, we have to make sure that we are taking care of those who serve and their families basic needs. i am really proud to say we do have bipartisan support, wit sponsorship and this is by candidate. hopefully this move forward an will affect readiness, it will

affect family stability an also just make sure they kno we are able to have those wh serve without having to worr about having their basic needs met. >> all right thank you for being with us this evening congresswoman strickland of washington's that, no earlier this week at the national convention i had chance to interview a number o cabinet members of the biden administration one of them, secretary o transportation pete buttigieg. i sat down with the secretary, and started by asking him wher our country stands in light of recent hate crimes against black and lgbtq communities. >> well i think we are at vulnerable moment fo vulnerable people. we have to concern ourselves not just with the injustic that can come to people for an institution but also the way i is randomized and the way that there have been hate crimes, the way that there have been

attacks including things tha we know that we can do something about what the polic tools we have. i know the entir administration's focus on, tha for our department things like making sure transit is safe an accessible for everyone. and that everyone is fear free as they're just going abou their day, going to work, goin to see loved ones. it's a top priority an something we are very focuse on >> the train developments that we have seen has been a majo concern to you in your department and what are we doing in government, departmen of transportation and others t really make those that are the manufacturers, the owners, and others do it as appropriate, necessary and required to make people safe that are traveling on the railway >> it starts wit accountability and norfolk southern is facing accountability, first of all because epa is holding the responsible for the cleanup fo

the mess that they made. and our department, making sur that safety rules an regulations are followed safety depends on tough rules, and strong enforcement from the moment we got, here w did things like resuming safet audits that the prio ministration that hit th brakes on. we know there can be more, w are pushing with the tools tha we have and we are urgin congress to make it possible for us to hold those rubbl companies to a higher standard these front revolt companies for us longer safe existed hav famously had a lot of cloud an a lot of abilities especiall in washington to push back o safety regulation to water dow the rules. ow is a time when th standards for these railroad companies, their accountabilit needs to get tougher and not weaker i'm encourages bipartisan bill that do this, that needs t turn into law so that we can g forward and implement that law >> has any of those on the other side of the republican

fatalities it is not equal and it's something that yo took on at this convention and have taken on. tell us about your concerns an the steps we are taken to tr and deal with that that is a, major major problem >> it, is it something tha this is more tension which i why i'm working to bring mor attention to it. we have a crisis when it comes to roadway fatalities in america. we lose about 40,000 peopl every year it's a level that is comparabl to gun violence. and we see a lot of racial disparities. black and brown, americans tribal citizens and ru restaurants are much mor likely to lose their lives whether it's in a car, or as a pedestrian being hit by a car. there's a lot of reasons related to discrimination, and related to even the ways tha roads are designed and built have access to a safe street design, that as crosswalks and good lighting. who doesn't have that access that can drive disparities and we have a responsibility t

act on that the good news is, we have resources to get that done, no thanks to the infrastructure law. that president biden signe about a year and a half ag now. we are able to target th safety opportunities lik funding for safer roadwa design or something else of th committee wants to make happen we're able to direct those funds where they're most neede and we are urging communitie to continue applying we just at our first round of, grants not just for things tha are ready for construction b for communities that want to g through that exercise of planning everybody knows that corne where they're worried abou their kids being able to safel get picked up by a school bu or make their way to school, everybody knows that curve i the road that you try to avoid a nighttime concealment people you know it had a crash there. we have to, acts and d something to save lives and we have to recognize that the impacts of this have not bee equal. >> you have been able out of the infrastructure bill that president biden has signed

able to put some resources aside to address these disparities directly >> absolutely, about a billion dollars going up to a progra called safe programs and shoes for all that's just on example. we are working with communitie including communities that hav not always had the resources t successfully come to washingto and get that federal funding that's why we also launched -- call driving communities t provide the technica assistance often it's lower incom communities, communities with higher share of minorities living there that have bee less likely to have dollar even just a higher staff who know how to get those federa funds. we want to make sure that we are working with those communities on the front and s that they can succeed. >> i have to ask you thi because we have become friendl down through the last, years you went to sylvia's restaurant that was a big hit what is the future for pet buttigieg after being secretar of transportation? have you thought about it? >> right now, i am so absorbed

gun restrictions may play well for the base but how will it impact a gop nominee and the general election >> well i think reverend taking a look at what is happening in michigan in the last week in leadership of governor whitmer up there, the just passed the biggest gu measure in decades i believe i the state in polling previou to his passage had it at about 90% approval this is another example just like with desantis and the six-week abortion ban, where now the republican party being let around by the nose by maga is so far out of step with mos americans, i think it makes it very difficult for them to com back to the middle somehow because the base won't allow it remember these people reverend, they are not conservatives, they're not republicans, they ar denialist. it on care who wins so long as they are pure. what i will also say is ther are people like me who hav school age children, i used to be a republican and i am not anymore who are saying wait,
