9:01 pm
tomorrow good to have you here. so, if you got in your car, an you drove out of oklahoma city you drove southeast, out o oklahoma city, about fou hours. before you left oklahoma state limits, before you crossed the border, the last placed yo would hit is mccurtain county, oklahoma it's right in the farthest south corner of the great stat of oklahoma, it border arkansas to the east, and texa to the south and in mccurtain county, i that part of oklahoma. the local newspaper is calle the mccurtain gazette news and the mccurtain gazette news is a print only newspaper, doesn't have a website if you want to read th mccurtain gazette news reporting, it's like the googl days you have to wait each week
9:02 pm
until the hard copy of the paper hits your doorstep, an then you can see what they hav reported on. like all good local news outlets, online or in print, o both the staff at the mccurtain gazette news, make it thei business to make sure they are did legitimately covering th local government in thei corner of oklahoma so they show up to count commissioners meeting, where the agenda is by an equipmen for the local volunteer fire department, or road repairs, for stuff like that. at the end of the day, these local reporter see it, as thei job to make sure that loca citizens know what their local government is doing. and also, as the flip side o that same coin, they are makin sure that the local government in that area, county officials in that part of oklahoma, they are held accountable for wha they do. so, making sure citizens are
9:03 pm
informs, making sure that loca officials know that everybod knows what they are doing, i means covering a lot of thes mundane comings and goings o local governance it means a lot of shoe leather a lot of going to what is ofte boring meetings. the thing is though, every onc in a while, despite it day-to-day mundane character a the best of times, every onc in awhile, reporting of that character, reporting like that turns up something that is not at all mundane that is what has just happened in mccurtain county, oklahoma. last month, on march 6th, th mccurtain county commission, held one of their normal meetings, which are usuall boring affairs, for all th right reasons. but, staff in the mccurtai gazette news, went to that meeting to cover it, and after the meeting, the longtim publisher the paper, a man named bruce billingham, he decided he was gonna d something out of the ordinary.
9:04 pm
he decided to leave a voic activated recorder, inside the room where the commissio meets. and the reason he did that, is because he suspected, that the county commission, in mccurtai county, was continuing to do county business, after the meeting had ended. and that would've been i violation of the states open meeting act. his publisher for the loca paper essentially thought that the commission was trying to d business affecting the peopl of the county without loopin the public in what they were doing and that is somethin that's just not allowed unde state law. so this publisher, he made sur that what he was doing was o the open up, when he left that recorder he told the associate press, i talked on two different occasions with our attorneys, to make sure wasn't doing anything illegal. >> but he left the recorde there, it's voice-activated. and then he went back an collected it and when he collected that reporter, he discovered that there is a lot more going on
9:05 pm
after the close of the count commission meeting, more tha just a violation of th oklahoma open meeting act, tha he had suspected, here is ho the mccurtain gazette news headlined it on their fron page, this week. quote, county official discussed killing, and burying gazette reporters. , there's an audio recording the audio this conversation wa released this weekend, by th mccurtain gazette news, and it is horrifying. in the audio recording, you ca hear the mccurtain count sheriff, talking to anothe share from the official from the sheriff's office, as wel as a local county commissioner and it appears that th officials are sort of, bluntly talking amongst themselves about killing the publisher of the local newspaper, bruce spilling him, and his son chris, who also works as a reporter for the mccurtain gazette news
9:06 pm
this is apparently due to th fact, that the paper has published unfavorable storie about the sheriff's office i the past but regardless of what cause any sort of bad will here, the conversation that follows is disturbing so, if you don't want to hea it, now is your chance to hi pause or turned me off, bu here we go here it is >> they're insignificant in my life -- >> what comes around goe around -- >> i know where to big depots, are if you ever need them. well i've got an excavator these were already pre dog as, if what they were saying was not clear enough, they als discussed the ins and outs o what it would take to hire a hitman to do the job
9:07 pm
>> i know two or three hitmen. >> and they would show n mercy. and louisiana, because it's al i'm off around here. >> but here is the reality,. or any of those people who wer really behind all that, wh would be the bag i've no two or three hitman, the very quiet, guys that show no mercy oh yeah, but a parent's wife's head, the report's wife head was touched, in another part o the recording, a voice identified as a county commissioner, laments the fact that lynchings, are no longe color practice, that's n longer something you're allowe to do.
9:08 pm
>> to 12 people going to the sheriff, it's alaska 20. they don't have a clue wit they're getting into >> i'll tell you something back in a day's, and the worked their butt and put them in the cell. >> yeah, like mud creek up the road they can't do, that they hav more rights and we've got. >> first back in the day, yo take a dam black, i and what they're but into the middle, now it's not like that anymore i know, take them down to mu creek, and hanging up with a dam rope, you can't do tha anymore, they have more rights than we do they've got more rights no than we got. nbc news has not independently verified this audio, we reac out to the mccurtain count sheriff's office by phone, the
9:09 pm
said they had no comment a this time. we also reached out to the county commissioner, who apparently has his voice on th tape, we haven't heard bac from him but we will tell, you is certainly everyone in the stat of oklahoma, appears to be taking this matter rathe seriously, the publisher of th newspaper says he's turned ove these audio recordings to th fbi, the oklahoma attorney generals office, he says he' also already had several conversations with federal investigators. we governor the state of oklahoma, has called on th officials heard on these recordings, to resign. again, the governor is calling on news county officials t resign he's also asking the oklahom bureau of investigation, t look into this matter. the state representative for the area, has also demande that the sheriff resign, and others resign, the local mayor has also demanded thes resignations now, look at this morning, mor than hundred people gathered around mccurtain count sheriff's office to protest, and demanded these officials
9:10 pm
leave their post, over these racist and violent comments. talking about how they sai they wish they could lynch people, like they could back i the day they wish they could people and put them in a cell. we and mccurtain, county oklahoma, it's not the onl place dealing with a local upheaval it is now making national news we are also keeping an eye o akron, ohio. 25-year-old black man, jalen walker, no criminal record when traffic ticket on his record in his life he was driving his car, last june, akron police said mr walker's car had a broke license plate light, because o that they try to pull him over according to police, walker di not stop, police say walke then fired a single shot fro his vehicle. he exited his car, he began to run, away the police officer chased after him, and then the shot at him. they shot at him dozens of

9:12 pm
bullets 46 different times he died on the spot, and as yo lay bare dead, they handcuffed him. police say the reason they sho and killed jayland walker, i because he reached for his waistband, as if you are about to shoot them, that would've been impossible after they killed him they say the gun police say he used to fire that single sho from his car, that gun was still in his car, which mean he was unarmed when they fired nearly 100 bullets at him, and put 46 bullets into his body again, and then handcuffed him when he lay down on the ground having been shot 46 times. after jayland walker was sho and killed in akron ohio a special grand jury was the empaneled, to determine whethe charges should be brough against the eight police officers, who shot of mr walker today, that special grand jury delivered their decision

9:19 pm
do you lose your humanity in exchange, just from existing while black in certain areas what we need to work on in kansas city, i would, sa nationwide after this, is ho do we make sure that first o all, it's clear that this is not right, this is not something that's accepted, and his fear of black youth, o black people you talked about it through th entire show. it's something that we need to confront that we need to call, oh no we need to address, we need to not have the narrative beef state legislatures, tha are against diversity training including in my home state, bu instead have people recogniz the bias, the goes to so man of, them so we don't see thing like this happening again an again. >> one of the things i've seen discussed in the wake of the shooting, is a so-called stand-your-ground law whic missouri's had for a number of years now. since i believe 2016 is there any sense in whic that stand-your-ground law i implicated here, obviously thi
9:20 pm
is a gun crime, this is shooting that existed in the way you're allowed to use your weapon as governor of missouri according to a law that' designed effectively to preven home invasion, something lik that gonna be implicated here, in terms of this young man jus having run the doorbell an posing no threat to this famil or this home but nevertheless, those sort of laws are seen in othe places, as having muddy th waters around encounters lik this, that ends in shootings we have seen the gun lobby change what is core common sense. i said this earlier, but i'l repeat it again, if this was the sort of thing wher stand-your-ground can be enforced, and every u.s. posta worker, every amazon deliver person, every piece of deliver person, every girl scout volunteer, anybody knocking on a door, now becomes somebody who's subject to be shot

and i think particularly, i sa this is not just a mayor, no just a person's community, but as a black man and a black father, to recognize the additional risk the people o color, that black people disproportionately will face because of defenses like this. it concerns me greatly so i do hope this is a case where ther is a conviction, but more than that, i hope and i pray, i don't know if it'll happen tha some of these legislatures tha have tried to basically allo guns to be everywhere, and use in every circumstance, in ever situation finally say you know what, this is a kid. this is a good kid, who did no deserve this and well there fetishization o gun laws has done, thi expansion of gun rights an protections, so people are using them outside their cars. this man is scared of a blac managed, or this could b pushed back, against until w

drama over the past couple o years, and that crucial moment and there -- an outgoing president wa calling officials around the country, kind of throw the election result, keep him in power instead, we will remembe rusty bowers, who's republican leader in the arizona house of representatives, we got that pressure from former president trump, he got so much pressure to throw the election results. he got the kind of pressure th turns coal into diamonds but rusty bowers, sewed up t it he didn't do it. and whatever else there is t know about rusty bowers, i arizona, it's a politica figure and a man, he would not throw the election results from arizona, donald trump demanded he do it. as a consequence, rusty bowers a, was thrown out of office by arizona republicans, they ca stand for that
9:28 pm
but be, i think it's a arguable that rusty bowers and his pacing goes, history as key man in a key role, in a ke moment remember who rust bowers, is and i do think he has a unique place in this crucible moment that we're having in the history of american democracy will see hi here, in this tape we'll see him here, this i from march of last year. you'll see him here with another, man who will also g down in history, for the great personal cost, he has paid also for trying to sav democracy. >> speaker bowers -- >> members, we are honored today to have vladimir kara-murza, with us there is a bio on each of your desks, tha will describe what i would consider a very brave position

>> rusty bowers, before he was censured by arizona republican before he lost his seat in state politics, because he wouldn't overturn the election results, to keep forme president in office. that's rusty bowers in the arizona state legislature, introducing vladimir carolina, you may also recognize you'v seen him on the show before. you've seen him here on nbc. may recognize him as one of th most high-profile opposition political figures in russia. the reason we have that tape o him in arizona, with rusty bowers, is because march o last, year just a year ago vladimir kara-murza, was invited to speak to the arizon state legislature, but the war that had just started, about russia having just invaded ukraine, and started - their war there. that speech in arizona that he gave, i thought it isn't russi use that
9:31 pm
they cited that speech i particular they arrested him for the grav crime calling russia's war i ukraine a war, in a lot to d that and a great kind of criticizin vladimir putin for turning russia for what should b democracy, to a dictatorship today, vladimir kara-murza was sentenced to 25 years in prison the longest punishment inuit ever handed down to kremli critic since the fall of the soviet union the only opposition politica feature in washington, i alexei navalny, who you see on the screen here. he's already been imprisoned we've had, news just in th past few, days that alexei navalny has become so elwell i prison, then ambulance was
9:32 pm
called several days ago, his lawyers believe he's bee poisoned inside prison and that sounds, of course like a farfetched thing it t claim it's over the fact tha lsu navalny, has already bee poisoned by the russia security services. he was poisoned in a nerve agent attack in 2020, and, a you heard rusty bowers, sa vladimir kara-murza has twic been attacked with poiso having barely survived eac time i like alexei navalny they'v sentenced to a long term priso sentence 25 years in prison tha treatment of opposition figure that is part of how russia i waging this war that the started in ukraine and a dictator's war against their own people i mean in russia for anyon it's a ten or 15-year prison sentence if you call the war a war. you cannot use that word for i or you go to prison. there's not a single hig pressure profile political opposition figure, who is stil free today, in russia.
9:33 pm
now they're handing out 25-yea prison sentences, for crimes like expecting to speak an invitation from rusty bowers the arizona state legislature. that's one way they are waging the war. another way they're waging their, war is by locking up al the press, it's no longe illegal to operate, effectively, a non state controlled new organization in russia and one american journalist, evan gershkovich for the wal street journal's in russia prison today having been charged with espionage for the grave crim of working as a reporter insid russia today, finally, u.s. ambassado to russia was allowed to see mr. gershkovich in prison. it's been more than two week since russia locked him up they only let him have his first visit from the u.s embassy today, ambassador lynn tracey said that mr. gershkovich is in good health, and he remained strong she also reiterated that the u.s. government is demanding that he be released. so that's another way that the
9:34 pm
are waging this war right now. still, another way that they'r waging, it is, weirdly, this after a lot of online sleuthing, by disinformation researchers, particularly russian disinformation researchers, th wall street journal has just published this bizarre report, about one of the largest, most widely followed pro kremlin, pro russia, pro putin social media networks on earth. the amazing thing they report, is at this network, apparently is controlled by american women. -- she's pretending to have bee born in eastern ukraine. she's been claiming to be russian origin she's reportedly been runnin this major online network, supporting russia and th warning crane, with accounts o

9:36 pm
these, documents classifie documents. he posted them online, the didn't come to public attention, until much later, until this month. according to the wall street journal, find the reason t happen the way, did part of th reason these documents came to policy, tension at the languishing on his game in discord server, is because i ones particular social media account, the big, calling this one big social media account with a big following, for been pro russian and pro putin, the one run secretly by this american woman, her telegram account, started posting these documents, to their ow telegram account, a couple o weeks ago, on april 5th. so the massachusetts airme have been posting them on this discord server, it was this, woman apparently, or lease the network she was running, tha circulated them more broadly by posting them on telegram. she has a large following on telegram, by pro russia pr
9:37 pm
putin pro kremlin, interests started picking up these documents only after she poste on telegram. so i circulated them mor widely that's when the pentagon finally noticing, them and start investigating. in other words documents wer basically unnoticed, sitting there on obscure gaming server chat rooms they did not get noticed at all, until this big pro putin socia media account, put them into circulation. >> there's a bunch of things that are very interesting abou this one that's pro putin socia media network, which play this key, roll apparently, an circulating these classified documents, the woman who reportedly runs the network, i not only american, even though she claims to be russian but until november according to th wall street journal she was in the united states navy station that would be island that seems like a problem.
9:38 pm
another bigger problem here, i that there is a fox news channel problem associated wit this in this whole scandal abou these classified documents b imposed online, you might have heard along the way, that some of the documents were altered, so it wasn't just that this wa classified material the public was never supposed to see part of the issue here is that some of these documents were altere from what they originally said according to the wall street journal the doctor documents were the ones that were posted online by this woman, or by th network that she was, runnin this pro putin pro russi social media network, which pu this thing into wide circulation. specifically what was changed? well, one of these documents was changed, to make russian casualties in war, look away lower than they were and to make ukrainia casualties look way higher tha they were. in other words this on
9:39 pm
document was doctored to mak it look like don russia is doing way better and lower tha actually are, and to make it look like ukraine was losing really badly another way to put it is, is the way they put it when the discuss how fox news >> the second thing we learned from these slides, is despit direct u.s. involvement, ukraine is in fact lose in the war. seven ukrainians are being killed for being russian ukraine is losing the war. ukraine is losing the war. seven ukrainians are being killed for every russian that's not actually what you can learn from the slides, that's what you can learn from the documents that wer allegedly online by this massachusetts internationa guardsman, that is intercepted on its, week but then in order to get that seven ukrainians killed for every one russian killed, you can only learn tha from the slides that wer crudely doctored, by the pro russia pro putin social medi

network, they circulated the caucus fight information tha first, place but onl reportedly after changing the, documents to try to make i look like russia's war is goin way better than it is. so, how do these documents get into circulation this weird pro russia social media network, affiliated with somebody who just got out of the u.s. navy. that is the network that als circulated the fake documents, that were altered, crudely, to make it look like russia i definitely winning the war, an ukraine is definitely losing and that is the document tha fox news highlighted, on our network last thursday. so, the fox news channel, of course, is gone either big day in court starting tomorrow the defamation case with dominion voting systems will get into court it is supposed to start today, but it was delayed til tomorrow, elijah lot o speculation on may be the case when you go to trial, maybe th two sides would settle and now looks like there are gonna going to trial tomorrow,
