supreme court's major decision to temporarily ends lega battle over access the mos commonly used abortion pill in the united states, mifepristone the high court blocked a rogue ruling by texas judge, matthew kiss merrick from april 7t that nullify the fda's longtim approval of the. drug the case now heads to the fifth circuit court of appeal. joining me now, nb investigative reporter, chlo atkins, to talk more about this quote, can you talk about this and what took place in th last 24 hours? and what we can expect next? >> hey yasmin, so we saw other supreme court move yesterday t preserve the status quo as i relates to mifepristone, one o the two drugs used in th medication abortion to terminate early pregnancies. and while the supreme court di move to keep the accessibility as is, we did see justice alit issue a dissent, saying that look, the fda and this pil manufacturer were able to prov that they would be harmed in the interim while this cas plays out. he also added that stripping

away these 2016 regulatory changes would preven mifepristone from bein accessible however,, yasmin it's importan to zero in on the facts. hear the facts are, here if we went back to the year 2000 access to mifepristone, th abortion pill, drug would look drastically different than wha we're accustomed to since 2016 folks would have to go in fo multiple visits to the doctor' office to be able to get tha pill it would have to be ther in-person, naturally it also would only be able t get it up until seven weeks. rather than ten weeks in pregnancy. this would also cause a lot of confusion with providers and patience throughout th country. and in my conversation wit providers this morning, an clinics, they told me that look this is a huge sigh o relief but the sigh of relief is very temporary. because as access to this ke drug could look different as the place plays out in the courts and in the years to come they have been stockpiling

several blue states as well as quote we just talked about looking to stockpile mifepristone along wit misoprostol, which i essentially the second pil that you take along with mifepristone for the medical abortions. what are groups like yours doing to prepare for the possibility in which mifepristone is taken off th mark it in six weeks time, possibly we've been working with ou allies on the ground, states like michigan, california, great governor partnership there to expand access t medication and surgica abortions in the meantime. we know that there are als governors who are stockpiling, that's another valid option to try to protect their constituents we also know that it's not going to be enough we need broader reform specifically court reform. we've got this court that is siding with laws from the 1800 from the 1930s, rather than th people living right in front o them, and it's going to be har

evacuation, so what we know is that the pentagon has sent troops to the u.s. militar base in djibouti in preparatio for a possible evacuation of the 70 u.s. government personnel that are in th country. now we know that there are som 16,000 americans that are in the crossfire there in the country, but officials hav told our pentagon team that th mission to evacuate thos 16,000 americans right now i too dangerous, they went on to say that the u.s. military i preparing for all contingencies, including a larger evacuatio missing. at this, point nothing has happened yet we are also hearing from the general for the sudanese armed forces who is saying that he i immediately working to evacuat u.s., british and french nationals, but all three o those countries have not confirmed that information but, look we hav seen several attempts fo cease-fires over the last week this fighting has been takin place, and including yesterday both sides agreed to that. that has failed. we have seen continued fighting,

everybody. we have been talking about the supreme court allowing acces to the abortion, pil mifepristone, for now. that case before three judge panel on the fifth circuit court of appeal. pretty conservative court, b the way. and i want to turn the collectible the nation's top lawmakers are reacting to it all and bases, julia tsirkin is following it this for u from the hill. what are you hearing >> well, just a couple minutes ago, yasmin, we heard from the nrsc chair, the person i charge of the senate political arm for republican, steve, daines who tweeted saying this decision by scotus is, quote, setback in the fight for lif which is significant because i was prepared to say we haven't heard much from top republicans, including from senate minority leader mitch mcconnell and ove in the, house speaker kevi mccarthy but democrats on the flip side they know how important it i to stay in front on this issue and his state loud on this issue. because they saw what happened with the 2022 midterms, wher voters particularly in the

great. case there were a number o problems with. one, this judge is a ver trumpy judge this matthew - he appointed him and he is i texas, he had the case, it was very flimsy. and more than that, the larger point of the case was, if yo overturn fda approval for drug he didn't like that has been approved for 23 years, so is pretty sketchy. and pretty, i mean, i was stil a little bit worried about the supreme court because remember what they did with sb8 officially overturning roe i this state of texas. a year before they did do th dobbs decision i was worried but this reall was not a good case for th antichoice, crew >> let's talk about how this could reverberate on both side of the i'll as we are looking ahead t a presidential election, we ar already seeing and hearing about some of it i want to read for you from th new york times, from north carolina to, nevada democrat running at every level o government are vowing to mak
