vision we have brand new reporting on what president biden's campaign launch could look like and who will lead his team with his re-election announcement expected to come as early as tomorrow this as a new nbc news poll shows a vast majority of republican primary voters stand firmly behind former president trump despite the criminal charges and the looming legal challenges he faces. are we headed for a rematch? steve kornacki is here to break down all the um numbers for us the race to evacuate is under way in sudan american forces rescuing personnel from a u.s. embassy in a nighttime mission, as fighting the africa's third largest country enters a second week we have more on the incredible mission to get them to safety. what about the 16,000 americans still on the ground there in sudan? an american travel writer stuck in the capital describes chaos in the country >> the city is so tense right now. a lot of people are fleeing left and right. i can see the cars outside

reporting, just in the last few weeks when the president biden returned from ireland and rehoboth beach, delaware, we expect it to be familiar with what we've heard over the last few months, this idea that he needs time to finish the job he will be touting what he thinks is a revitalization of american manufacturing, an economy that works for the middle class -- goes from the middle class out, not from the top down we'll see the president then build on those themes in a public event tomorrow where he'll speak to a major union yup here in washington union workers, the middle class has been the backbone of the president's political support. we'll also see tomorrow vice president kamala harris doing a rally on reproductive rights which is going to be another major issues in 2024 just as it was in 2022. that's what the principals are doing. what does the campaign itself look like? our colleague john allen saying the president is set to tap

7:05 am
political analyst. great to have all of you here. i want to get right to steve with first the outlook for president biden here obviously it's really early, steve, he's caught some headwinds. >> there are some troubling numbers here if you're joe biden and the democrats. of course, the silver lining would be there were troubling numbers last year heading into the midterm. they may need to pull off something similar in 2024. the bottom line, biden is poised to announce his re-election bid, job approval, just 41% approve of the job he's doing as president. a majority, 54% say they disapprove the trend, not favorable here either at the start of the year in january it was 45/50 he's further under water now than he was several months ago specifically you talk about the issue of the economy this one has been a drag on biden's numbers basically from the get-go you can see less than 40% continue to approve of how he's
7:06 am
handling the economy we've been seeing numbers like this for biden for a while, asking people the basic question, should he run for re-election? look at this only a quarter of americans, 26% say he should run. 70% say he should not run, that includes a substantial number of democrats. age we find in our poll could be a factor biden, if re-elected, would be 82 years old when sworn in for a second term. what that adds up to, when you pit biden against a generic republican, biden or a republican, who would you vote for in 2024, that leads to biden trailing by six points of yours, no party gets to field a generic candidate. there will be a name here running against biden in 2024. if there's a silver lining in this polling data for biden and the democrats, it's this when you start to put names
7:07 am
here, for instance, the front-runner on the republican side, you find these are the positive and negative numbers, just general impressions voters have in their candidates and parties, biden is not popular, 38 positive, 48 negative donald trump is a lot less popular, 34% positive and outright majority, 53% rating him negatively that number, that trump unpopularity is what saved democrats to a great degree in 2022 it may be what they're counting on to save them in 2024. >> senator jones, 70% of americans, even the majority of democrats, 51% in this recent poll, are saying they don't want biden to run again how does president biden win over those democrats, or perhaps more importantly, independents those democrats. he's won over those democrats. a poll is just a damn poll right now. it means absolutely nothing. with all due respect to steve, a complete waste of time at this
7:08 am
point about what people might want to see in another year and a half the fact of the matter is that joe biden has coalesced the democratic party all the way from the center to the left. he has done an incredible job for the united states of america. he's done an incredible job for working families, for those seeking jobs, looking for jobs, bringing back manufacturing, lowering health care costs everyone is going to coalesce aroundjoe biden going forward. there's just no question about that remember, ana, people didn't really want joe to run in 2020 people said that he peaked at the time of his announcement the fact of the matter is you always count joe biden out, and what's happening now is a surge i think for him as going forward, as his accomplishments for 2020 through the last two years are going to come to fore and people are going to start feeling those accomplishments as they get closer to november. >> okay, we'll see
7:09 am
that's the starting point in the polling as we look ahead to the 2024 election which is still a year and a half away, right, before voters go to the polls. on the republican side, too, we want to lay the groundwork here. it's not a clear path for anybody right now. let's go back to steve how are voters feeling about trump and other gop contenders >> aswe say, it won't be a jan eric republican that biden is running against. we asked republican voters who do you want to be your candidate in 2024? in our poll donald trump with the lead here. the only one of these other proponents or perspective opponents getting traction, ron desantis, 46% for trump, 31 for desantis there's a big divide, an education divide republican voters with college degrees a little more supportive of desantis. those without college degrees a lot more supportive of trump we've seen that education divide this is a lot of words here, but
7:10 am
basically this is what we asked republican voters in this poll all the legal investigations involving donald trump right now. do you view them as a distraction, and dulz it mean that maybe because of this somebody else, somebody knew should be nominated who can focus only on beating joe biden. we asked republicans that. or do you view the investigations as politically motivated to stop trump and that no other candidates like trump so we must support him to keep his opponents from winning are the investigations a distraction or are they plightly motivated or is it time to rally behind trump those are the options we gave them 70% say they view the investigations as politically motivated. that's important to keep in mind over the next year the investigations will continue to make headlines. this is the kind of reaction it generates among republican primary voters just very quickly, we showed you that number. not a lot of voeks want biden to run. it's true for trump as well.
7:11 am
only 35% of all voters want trump running. >> rick, take a listen to what one republican governor had to say about the idea of trump being at the top of the ticket again. >> we want a winner, right republicans want someone who can win in november of '24 donald trump is a loser. he has not just lost once, he lofthouse seats in 2018, he lost everything in '20. we should have 54 u.s. senators right now. we don't because of his message. donald trump is positioning himself to be a four-time loser in 2024. we need candidates that can win. >> okay. governor sununu is already considering a 2024 run rick, do you think gop voters agree with him, that trump's political defeats make him a loser? >> if i were a republican candidate for president, i would change my name to jan eric republican and i might have a chance of winning. i think it's very troubling that the republican party has rallied
7:12 am
around trump who is twice impeached, one time indicted, facing tremendous legal problems sununu points out what republicans should be measuring against. politically he is a loser. he's lost the house, he's lost the senate twice, and he lost the white house. he brings nothing but defeat this is the worst choice the two candidates combined have a combined age of 156 years old. age is being cited as one of the reasons why they don't want biden to run 51% of democrats don't want biden to run trump is actually more unpopular than biden this is the worst choice since 2020, which is the worst choice since 2016 i won't make any predictions at this moment because politics is likeness and history proves us wrong all the time nobody knows what's going to happen in this race, but the republicans ought to figure out that the past is predicated --
7:13 am
you can predict the future by what someone has done in the past trump has lost a lot of seats for republicans, and i don't know why they want to do that again. >> quickly, senator jones. if you're president biden, are you hoping for a rematch against trump or would a different gop candidate be more of the dream >> i don't think joe cares who he's going to run against. joe is going to run on joe's record it is a tremendous record. every candidate that republicans are at least contemplating right now do not have anywhere near the kind of record he has for the american people. he is going to run his campaign on his record which is not something he had necessarily in 2020, but he has been able to stay the course, do the things for the american people that he said he would do, and that's what i think he'll run on, regardless of who the republican nominee is. >> former senator doug jones, steve kornacki, rick tyler, my thanks to all of you. nbc news has exclusive news on movement inside the biden administration we just learned susan rice is
