related to former presiden donald trump's effort to steal the election 2020. in michigan a special prosecutor has reportedly convened a gran jury to lay criminal charges against trump supporters for tampering with voting equipmen in the aftermath of the 2020 election if this sounds familiar, tha is because it is a similar investigation is underway in georgia, where fulton county d.a. fani willis is looking into trump's effort to overturn the election results in that state, including, according to cnn an others, including efforts to get access to voting machine in coffee county, georgia. w don't know how this part of th investigation will play out in the broader scheme of things willis is investigating. but we do know that decision are coming. yesterday, the atlanta journal constitution reported that d. a. willis i getting ready to potentially announce charges against trump and others this summer. we kno

that because in a letter willi sent to the fulton count sheriff's office, warning them of the need for extra security as she moves ahead with he investigation, quote, i will b announcing charging decision melting from this investigatio during fulton county superio court's fourth term of the court, which will begin on jul 11th and conclude on september 1st, 2023. to discuss all this, i a joined now by mary mccord, executive director of th institute for constitutional advocacy and protection in georgetown, university law center. and former actin assistant attorney general for national security at the department of justice. mary it is great to see you. i'm wondering if you are reading this letter from the d. a. i fulton county the same way i a reading it. she is asking fo extra security, providing this letter to bring your attention to the need for heightened security and preparedness in the coming months due to thi at the announcement. and it sounds pretty plainly

obvious there that a crimina indictment of donald trump may becoming between july 11th and december 1st do you read it that way? >> she certainly does no mention trump by name in tha way. and she does not promise indictments. but one wonders whether yo would need a request for such level of security if she wasn' expecting there to b indictments returned and i particular, indictments agains the former president i will note that there wer lots of calls for protests i new york by former president trump himself as well as other like marjorie taylor green that largely ended up being dad after alvin bragg announce his indictments but georgia is not new york, and i think fani willis has some reason to be concerned, a she could'v reached out to the sheriff quietly not publicly, but sh chose to do it in a letter that, of course, is now quite public and i have to think that tha was a signaling function on he part, and a way for her to als say, you know when i sai imminent a month ago or so ago i didn't really mean imminent.

who was orchestrating thei scheme to meet on the day that the electoral college meets an to cast their ballots even though they were casting ballots for the loser of their state, in a state that gives all the electoral ballots to the when are and figure out how high up tha goes - we know from other high of places and other investigations, including that of the hous select committee, that james troops was involved in wisconsin, for example, with the fraudulent electors ther and that kenneth trust burro was very involved with the scheme in multiple states. so, you know, trying to find out i these electors have more information about who thei contacts were, any other email or communications that the might be able to share, but would also note the othe things that things you wer reporting about -- michigan, there's also evidenc that in georgia as well ther were efforts to tamper with an actually access and ge unauthorized access to votin machines in coffee county an

to upload that software fo voting machines. and so some of that, i think is also probably within th scope of fani willis's investigation. and it could be that they ar working on cooperators related to that as well. new have relations suggest tha this kind of access in georgia was actually discussed at th december 18th meeting that trump had with sydney powell and others. and so that woul really be pretty substantial new evidence if that is in fac true >> we know that special counse jack smith is also investigating efforts to subvert the election. and we are told repeatedly that the special counsel's office is no coordinating with the d. a.' in their timing of potential charging decisions. but becaus jack smith and fani willis hav a lot of overlap, do you think there's a possibility that the doj is talking to the d. a.' office and they ar coordinating the potential rollout of any indictments because the timeframe looks to be similar, the summer

>> yeah. we don't have a timeframe from jack smith. wha but we know about jack smith i that as a federal prosecutor h is going to be very consciou of not taking any action t close to an election that coul be perceived as trying t influence that election. s whether that is the summer o this fall, for even in the spring, you know, it reall kind of depends on tha proximity to the election, which, of course, we know will be november 2024. but i don' think it has to be this summer in terms of coordination, i do think that they are probably going to try to be careful t not have an appearance o coordinating in a way that could be criticized as being done for political purposes, but you are right. there i overlap here, in many respects fani willis's investigation is a subset of jack smith's investigation, his being nationwide and hers being, o course, focused on georgia, an in particular, fulton county but, so there has got to b some level at least of sharing of evidence, potentially
