because you had a lift. and it was kind of a big joke because when they put implants in, they are a little larger than she wanted them to be. >> yes, they were. >> oh, no. >> we had some big laughs about that and she was gonna go have them reduced because she was like, they hadn't fall in and they were like sitting up here. >> but she did look good. >> oh she looks fabulous. >> and being a real estate agent, she felt it was important to look her best. on an unseasonably warm september day and 2014, beverley was easing back into work. brenda remembers beverley telling her that she was going to show a house not far from our home. the potential buyers were offering cash. >> she didn't want to go, she was sort. but she was hoping that should be able to get a fast close, because if it's cash close, you can close a quicker. >> this is kind of an every day, one of the most showing? >> a no-brainer. >> over the left the office then hit it off to show the property to a young couple. she told her husband, she'd be home for dinner.

his wife beverley. she had promised to be home for dinner, but it was dark now and she was not answering her phone. and with the property for sale, her car was in the driveway but there was no sign of her. carl said that he called the police, then his son. >> he says, you know, it's

almost 9:00. and i say son i have not heard from your mom. have you heard from her? and i'm texting her, i'm calling her, and i can't get any response. and my first thought was, dad, this is the nature of the business. >> to reach a sure his dad and himself, carl junior and his wife drove over to the office hoping she would be there. >> there was no one there, the place is completely black. and at that time, dad let me know that he had made it to the property where mom told him that she was going. and her car was there but she wasn't. >> carl figured there had to be an explanation. he called her friends. being real with assayed engines themselves, the thought that they would know -- . >> we went to two vacant housings which were her listings, and we checked the lock box to see if she had open them. and no one had open them. >> as the hours clicked by, her friend couldn't sleep.

so she tried her phone. >> i can still say the words that said, it is with a very heavy heart that i let you know. that we cannot find beverley. she went to show a house and she is missing. and i still could not read that and feel the same pain. >> police and beverley's family gathered at the property, trying to figure out where she was. >> how is your that handling everything? >> i felt like he was hard to read, he would sneak away from time to time and collect his thoughts. >> then, around 1 am. >> i heard, bam bam bam, three knocks. an officer. i said come here. beverley texted me. >> word that bethany texted gave everyone hope. >> i said, this is great. her phone had died. she got some words charged. >> well her friends got text of their own. >> our phones started beeping at the same time with texas.

and it was such an eerie feeling. >> i was like oh my gosh! >> what did she say to you too? >> she said i sorry my phone has been dead. i turned it back on. >> it sounded promising but a little bit off. concerned, she used the safety technique that the office had come up with. she texted bethany the special code. >> i said can you tell me who had left the red folder on my desk? >> if bethany was in trouble, she would text back her location. >> no one responded. >> the one that i got was about having drinks with friends. and i was like, we are right here. >> the text on beverley's husband's phone where deflating. they read, yes, sorry, phone been dead. having drinks now. carl junior knew his mother would never go out and not tell anyone. >> i can't even tell anyone. to go from this, she is okay, this is all over. to the second we saw the screen and saw what those text said? we knew.

but he did discover a clue outside of the front door. >> there was a tire mark in the grass. it looked like someone pulled up and went through the back door. >> the neighbor across the street had seed something? >> yes. she saw a black vehicle pull into the driveway. 25 to 30 minutes later, looked outside and saw a skinny white male with short hail outside of the house. with the vehicle back towards the front door. put two and two together, that's where the trier track came from. >> the detective had more to go on in bethany's car. >> i saw a notebook that she kept with realtor information. it showed a listing for the house. >> was there anything in the notebook that was providing you with any clues? >> attached to the listing was an email address and a phone number. >> did you call it right away? >> i did not call it right away. no. >> he did not pick up the phone for a good reason. the detective had a theory. >> i felt that beverley, wherever she was, she was being held against her well.

like, okay, you're the husband, and you just went into this home to search for her -- your fingerprints were everywhere. if completely contaminated our crime scene. why did you do that? you could just see their wheels turning it was like, oh, no. >> he was right to worry. detective allison brought karl senior in for questioning. >> did you put carl in an interview room? >> yes. >> and treated him like, this is someone we need to take seriously? >> yes. >> every time we do an interview like that, it's always best to get into a setting -- in an interview room, and i'm giving an interview. it plays on their emotions. >> did you ever consider the possibility that carl could've paid somebody to do this? >> yeah, i thought about it. >> did you know why you were considered somebody they needed to talk to? >> once i got in there, and i started questioning me, i knew that i was a suspect.

melvin. the hours had turned into days since family and friends had seen real estate agent beverley carter. and it was some good old-fashioned detective work that gave police their first big clue. once again, here is andrea canning, with the client. >> detectives search computer and phone records, and data was pouring in. they were hoping it would lead to the missing real estate agent. beverley carter cell carrier turned over everything on her phone, and there was one thing that call investigators attention, these blurry and dark pictures she took of the house she was trying to sell. not exactly showcase material, and when her daughter in law had a chance to see them. >> you have a theory about why they are or badly taken photos? >> you can just tell that it was quick, just quick. >> i knew she knew something was wrong. >> she believed beverley was scared of those potential

buyers, then was rushing to finish showing the house. it was all bad news, beverley carter had now been missing for three days. >> i have never felt that kind of loss of control, you feel utterly hopeless. >> and helpless. >> yeah. >> you cannot do anything. >> what they did not know was that detectives were about to crack this case wide open. the team that had discovered the buyers contact information was fake kept investigating. >> they were able to start taking the email address, the phone number, sending out search warrants, obtain subscriber information to those email, and phone number. >> did names pop up? >> yes. >> their real names? aaron luis, and his wife krystal lowery. police raced over to put the couples house under surveillance. >> this was a very delicate operation. >> yes. we were working with the expectation, and the hope that she was still alive. >> detective allison says he was not sure if the couple was

even involved. he first wanted to see what aaron lewis looked like. remember, their eye witness had seen a skinny white man was short brown hair the night beverley disappeared. they had not been sitting there long, when suddenly, almond matching that description walked out the door. but they did not approach him. >> were you hoping he might lead you to beverley? >> yes. we felt that if we made contact with him too early, if he was the one we were looking for, then everything is shot. >> luis got into his car, and that is when the detective said the plan quickly fell apart. >> he actually saw sitting there, so that's when he started speeding off. >> he knew you were following? i'm >> oh yeah, yeah. he actually went around a 90-degree corner, and wrecked, and was out of the vehicle by the time we were on the corner and saw him. >> lewis was injured. police photographed him, and rushed him to the hospital. >> we are not allowed to go back with them when they are getting certain treatment, so the detective is sitting

the case in their office. >> and as we are standing outside of this room looking out the window open, aaron luis walks right in front of the window. >> ben, immediately called 9-1-1. >> 9-1-1? >> hey, are, i'm sitting over here, they're looking for a guy here, that was involved in a real tour being kidnapped. and this guy looks like him. and he is nervous, he's out here at a bus stop. >> cohn and went out to the bus stop to confirm it really was luis. >> i approached him, and he was a little standoffish at first, i'm a quick conversation about the bus routes in the times, which put him and he's, and i think in that time i walk back inside and told my colleagues, absolutely that is aaron luis, without a doubt. >> they spotted luis ducking into a subway sandwich shop. he has got any security camera, and when lewis left -- >> someone from a distance outside had made the comment hey, i think that's him, and that's what spooked him. >> luis took off across the

street towards apartment complex. >> maybe five people chased him, we knew we were in different areas, so they were confident where he was. luckily for us, as soon as we turn the corner we saw the police coming. >> the police get there, erin takes off running into the apartment. and jumps out of a second story window before he is taken into custody. >> this is like a movie. this chase, this kidnapping. did it feel like that? >> oh yeah, yeah. it still does. >> the cops finally had a suspect, and what he revealed would send detectives on a hair raising ride to find the missing real a state agent. >> coming up. >> carl, it's beverley. >> a haunting recording. >> i just wanted to let you know i'm okay, i haven't been or. >> could beverley still be alive? >> i hoped. you have to, it's what keeps you going. >> when dateline continues. and allergy relief!

the internet, searched her out, saw that she was a broker, felt like she had money. >> luis described in detail what he claimed happened, he says when he contacted beverley above the house showing, she told him she did not feel comfortable meeting just him, so he got his wife crystal on the phone to say she would be there to. >> aaron shows up, he goes in and make some excuse as to why krystal could not come. aaron tells me that he had beverley take photographs of the house of their phone. >> so that explain why the photos the detective had seen were dark and blurry. luis said he had asked beverley dissenting to krystal so she couldn't be there. >> he said they walked upstairs, and when they got to the stairs, he pulled out a flashlight taser, and told her that she was about to have a bad day. and she asked, what are you talking about? he said you are being kidnapped. >> beverley must have been just absolutely terrified. >> no doubt, no doubt. >> luis then claimed he had an

accomplice, and he was not talking about his wife who had set up the meeting with beverley, it was someone else. >> he said of anything happened to beverley, trevor done it. >> trevor is a guy that aaron actually lived through a short period of time. >> to this give you some hope that maybe there was an accomplice here? and that maybe he did have beverley? >> i had hoped that we were going to find beverley alive, you have to, that's what keeps you going. >> luis said the last time he saw beverley she was with trevor, and then offered evidence that she might still be alive. luis played a recording from his phone, and it was chilling. >> carl, it's beverley, i just want to let you know it's okay, i have not been harmed. just do what he says, and please do not call the police. if you call the police, it could be bad. just want you to know i love you very much. >> it was encouraging, but it only prove beverley was alive at the time of the recording. the detective told luis he

needed more. >> and that is when he finally says, i will take you to the last place that she was. >> so this is a big moment now? >> yes. >> in this whole case? this is it? >> yes. that's really load him up, and we start going to cabot, arkansas. >> beverley's family prayed this nightmare was about two and. >> did you know that aaron lewis was saying that your mom was alive? >> yes. we knew that after they had had him and they were interrogating him. >> that was a big boost of energy. when he was telling us, it was so uplifting. we were like okay, we are about to get her back, that's great. >> is everybody just sitting on the phone waiting for the call? we got her? >> pacing. >> lewis lead detective allison on a nail-biting road trip 30 miles out of town to the last place he claimed to have seen beverley alive. i shared on the side of the road. >> what are you thinking as you are approaching the shed, that there is a really good chance

down at this trevor, the man lewis claimed it was his accomplice. >> we figured out he was in the military, in the iraq air force base, we did make contact with him, actually interviewed him. >> they interrogated trevor for several hours, then, let him go. >> he was not even in town when this happened. >> he had an hour in clad alibi? >> absolutely. we confirmed through his job, through the air force base, with their office of special and assignation that he was on base that day. >> lies after lies. there was no accomplice, neither location turned up anything. police were running out of options. and then detective allison thought of one more possibility, a cement plant called argos, where lewis had recently worked. >> i point blank asked him if beverley was argos? at that point, he was looking down the table. when he said that he looked up, and he said this stupid look on his face. i figured right then that was

she pleaded for her life, and to be sent back to us, and for her grand babies. i just have to know that god is there comforting her. >> aaron lewis was charged with murder and kidnapping, and his wife krystal lowry charged with his accomplice. they pleaded not guilty, but his worst reporter shannon miller outside the serious office did not sound like those of an innocent man. >> why beverley? why beverley? >> she was a rich broker. >> it was just as chilling in person as it was on tv, and then he gets into the car, and you are going, what did he just say? >> two weeks later, shannon interviewed lewis in jail, and he told a vastly different story from the one he had told detectives. >> was he willing to calk to anything? >> no. >> i did not kill her. i did not murder her. anything that did occur was an

accident. >> then, he tried to say beverley played a role in her own death. he implied she willingly met him at the house for a sexual hookup that went wrong. >> i went out with her to show the home, it was a place to meet. >> in your opinion, how farfetched was this new story about the sexual encounter? >> it was 100% made up. so was completely farfetched. >> assistant district attorney john johnson was assigned the case. he believed it was a kidnapping gone wrong, but needed help proving it in court. he turned to lewis wife krystal lowry. >> i thought from the very beginning that we would need to flip crystal, and it will be important for the case to testify. >> he made a deal with krystal, she agreed to testify against her husband, and plead guilty to murder and kidnapping, in exchange for a due sentence of 30 years. >> it is good for the jury to be able to hear, you know, the

back story of what went on, and the y of what went on. >> aaron lewis went on trial. the prosecution's star witness, krystal lowery, took the stand and told the jury all the grisly details. she claimed it was all about money, not sex. >> she said, he came up with the idea of kidnapping someone, but she went so far as to suggest real estate agents. >> she testified that she was in class at nursing school and luis objected beverley. >> she got a text from aaron lewis saying, look at this, or something like that, and it was a picture of miss carter bound in the trunk of the car. she said that when she got home, he had brought mrs. carter back to the house. >> she told the jury when she got home beverley was locked in their bathroom, what she said next showed how little thought went into this plan. lewis had forgotten beverley's purse, with her atm card at the property, so he went back to get it. crystal says when you get close

longer implying that he had sex with beverley. >> he claims he was out of the house of the time? >> that is what he said, yes. >> lewis said the trust was between beverley and crystal. he said beverley accidentally died during rough sex. >> she died well with his wife, and that he was only just protecting his wife from trying to cover up for her. >> to further birther this story, james suggested to the jury that beverley had been prone to poor judgment. he pointed out that she was broke, but driving a brand-new cadillac, and getting expensive plastic surgery. >> i'm just saying, she made some bad decisions, maybe she made another one. >> finally, aaron lewis took the stand, and told the jury the story about the alleged rendezvous with beverley and his wife. during cross examination, prosecutors pounced. they questioned him about every detail, including that one piece of evidence that seem to contradict his entire story. beverley's voice on that tape
