>> he was not prepared. he just busted that out. thankslogic. so you can get this interview tomorrow. he reflects on a lot of things including the role of the internet in his career and we can relate. the beat passed a billion streams online. a notable feat as one outlet put it. which puts me to the final thing i wanted to share. you can also find those interviews and news segments on msnbc.com/ari. i have hear from a lot of you guys. i'm always happy to keep in touch. but if the web is not for you, that's fine, too. i'll see you back here tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. eastern. the reid-out starts. >> tonight on the reid-out. >> the reality is, it's a witch hunt. because it makes no sense that
4:01 pm
in four months, four months, five months, i'm indicted. >> i will be a chairman of a committee in a couple of years if you look at the standards of congress. >> the george santos show enters another phase. he is facing up to 20 years in prison. meanwhile, kevin mccarthy refuses to call for santos' resignation because he needs his tainted vote. and republicans rush to the defense of donald trump after a jury determines he is indeed a sexual predator. plus, how should the media deal with the republican front runner who remains such a big danger to this country? we begin tonight with consequences. it's not something that you often see in politics. but in the past two days, some men in powerful positions have learned the hard lesson. that believe it or not, you can't just do anything you want and get away with it. exhibit a being serial
4:02 pm
fabricator and alleged part- time brazilian drag queen george santos. the republican congressman who was arraigned in a long island courtroom today. he pleaded not guilty to seven counts of wire fraud. three counts of money laundering. one count of theft of public funds and two counts of making materially false statements to the house of representatives. according to prosecutors, santos deceived donors to his campaign. and wrongfully claimed unemployment benefits when he was making $120,000 a year. the doj says if convicted, the congressman could face up to 20 years in prison. santos has made quite the name for himself. lying about everything from his education to his employment history. to being jewish. to hiring survivors of the pulse nightclub shooting, even his mom dying in 9/11. none of which was true.
4:03 pm
as a way of defending himself. santos pulls a donald trump. not only calling the indictment a witch hunt, but somehow attempting to make it about president biden. >> you have joe biden's entire family receiving deposits from nine family members receiving money from foreign destinations into their bank accounts. >> oh honey. but just like trump who learned yesterday that no, you cannot in fact just grab a woman by the you know what and get away from it. santos is about to learn that defense won't hold up in court. the congressman maintains he will not resign even as a growing number of republican lawmakers say he should. one person who has not called for his resignation however is house speaker kevin mccarthy. here is what he said earlier today. >> you'll have your day in courtment and go through it. just like with another member inside the house.
4:04 pm
he won't serve on committee. >> yeah. except mccarthy put santos on the small business and space and technology committees. santos recused himself voluntarily back in june. nonetheless, mccarthy's response goes to show how the santos indictment is not just legally damaging for a congressman running for reelection, it is another political catastrophe for a republican caucus already trying to stay afloat. mccarthy was already in a tough spot with a razor thin majority in the house. the events of the past 24 hours have made his job a lot more difficult. nbc's adam reese was at the courtroom. how did it go down? >> reporter: he showed up bright and early. turned himself in. he was fingerprinted, photographed. he turned in his passport. about six hours later, we were in the courtroom for the arraignment. he walked in wearing his
4:05 pm
typical white shirt, sweater, sport coat. he sat next to his attorney. his attorney read his arm around him. he read the charges and it was up to the judge to ask him a few questions. does he understand the charges? has he read the indictment? does he know about the fifth amendment? he said yes, ma'am to each and every one of those questions. finally she said, how do you plead? he very firmly said not guilty. then we got to the bond issue. $500,000 bond. three people put up money to make sure he was able to walk out the front door today. they want those names sealed. they are worried about retribution. and he can't go anywhere other than new york, long island, or dc. those are the places he must stay. and if he wants to go anywhere else as part of his so-called reelection campaign, he must tell the court, he must tell pretrial services. and the next hearing is on june 30th. but once we got outside, joy, it was a whole different story.
4:06 pm
it was a mob scene. a circus. about 100 reporters in camera. people were out there. when he walked out that front door, they just mobbed him. i told him please come over to our microphone. he eventually slowly made his way to the microphones. he said he is not resigning and this is a witch hunt. he defended himself. he said he will defend these charges. the charges are not accurate. he will show financial records. there was a moment when he started talking alleged biden crimes. he was booed down. he said he has to get back to washington for a vote tomorrow. he even said at one point, at some point, he will be the chairman of some committee. but these charges are very serious. they could lead to decades in jail. and then he was off back to washington. joy? >> wow, what a day. nbc's adam reese, thank you very much. joining me now is
4:07 pm
democratic congressman dan goldman of new york. thank you for being here. as we just heard that litany of what happened in the courtroom. i wrote down these two words. financial records. because i read through this indictment today and was really struck by the extent to which somebody who now we know his actually name, george anthony devolder santos solicited money from donors and then transferred that money to his personal accounts where he could spend it on designer clothes. on items for himself. and just literally took that money he was telling donors was to run ads for his campaign and further his election. lying saying his personal company was a superpac. but then turned around and spent the money. that is just one of the things he is charged with. what did you make of this indictment? >> i was a prosecutor ten years and it read like many
4:08 pm
indictments that i drafted. because it is a typical fraud defendant who will lie and deceive in order to get money for one purpose and use it on their personal luxury goods. that is one of the charges. there was also the unemployment insurance fraud charge where george santos himself who was working at that time claimed unemployment insurance, from the cares act. and then of course, he lied as i think we all recognized on his disclosure forms. but there are a couple of things that jumped out to me, joy. the first is this is a brazen, brazen individual. because these are pretty unsophisticated, simple crimes. there is not a lot to them. he created an entity. lied about what it was for and just funneled the money to himself. the reason this was a relatively short investigation to date is that it is not very
4:09 pm
complicated to unpack. but the oh thing that jumps out at me. when i look at his disclosures and campaign finances, there's more i think that the prosecutors will explore including the loans, the purported loans to his own campaign from the same entity he funneled the money through. this might be the beginning of the investigation. not necessarily the end. they wanted to get him with the lowest hanging fruit right up front. and he continues to walk these halls here. and vote on critical legislation and sometimes is the deciding vote. >> you know, what is fascinating about that is he seems to have used running for office, you know, as sort of a pad to his lifestyle. but also there was the misidentification of his income. where normally, you would think people would undersell their income. he inflates his income apparently.
4:10 pm
so that he can say that he loaned himself $700,000 to run for office from his own pockets which wasn't true. but you mentioned the unemployment piece. this is what is fascinating about that. he lies about his unemployment history. he is one of the main people behind trying to get more work requirements for people on unemployment. he is also in terms of geting the fraudulent covid money one of the people who will be voting and is cosponsor of a bill to try to catch people who are taking fraudulent covid money and written into that bill is less money for the agency that would look into it. it seems like he was using his job to try to cover up his own misdeeds. >> that is absolutely right. it is the worst conflict of interest that any member of congress could have and it is why he need to resign immediately. if he will not resign as he said today, the speaker of the house needs to convince him to
4:11 pm
do so. because he does not belong voting on legislation that would have an impact or a potential impact on his own misconduct. that undermines every single thing that we, the oath that we take and every basic rule of ethics and conflict of interest that you would have as a member of congress. in is not a situation, joy, where there is precedent. he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. which of course is the case. but this is a guy who admitted to lying in order to get this seat on things not charged here. and he has been charged with fraud in order to get this seat. all of his criminal activity, deceit and lies comes from trying to be a member of congress. he must be convinced to resign if he refuses. >> it doesn't sound like kevin
4:12 pm
mccarthy will do that. let me tell you what he said most recently about supporting him or not. >> i think he has other things to focus on in this life. >> you don't plan to support santos for reelection? >> that's what i said. >> saying i don't support him for reelection sounds like he doesn't want him to resign but stick around until the election. >> well of course he would. because santos is an extra vote. and the republicans in new york where i am from are furious that george santos deceived his voters and is now giving them essentially no representation. he is not on committees. he is not doing any meaningful work. they are unrepresented. there is a good chance a democrat will win and mccarthy has one fewer votes to push forward his extreme agenda. he needed george santos for the
4:13 pm
default on america act. he needed george santos to become speaker so kevin mccarthy has no incentive to push him out. but it has to be for the american people rising up that george santos does not belong here and they need to convince all of their representatives to urge the speaker to convince him and urge him to resign. >> he has a four-vote majority. that's all he's got. but you better believe he needs george santos. congressman dan goldman, thank you very much. up next on the reid-out. >> did you ever have a flicker when you are taking a shower walking to work or waking up in the morning where you said donald trump, you have won every battle you ever fought. why don't you run for governor or president? >> people want me to all the time. i don't like it. can you imagine how controversial i would be? can you imagine? >> donald trump back in 1998 talking to chris matthews about bill clinton's scandal. yes, we can imagine. unfortunately, now we don't have to.
