not normal. >> no, it wasn't. then, it's not now, as we approach the one year anniversary of the uvalde shooting, i mean us speak to states, enron gutierrez, who i spoke to on the ground in uvalde when you are. go and has been fighting for change ever since. you do not want to miss that incredibly important conversation, stick with me for that. we want to begin with the 2024 presidential race, or the lead up to it. ramping up with less than eight months until the iowa caucus, south carolina temps, got violent network on friday to throw his hat into the ring. he is joining a gop primary field that well crowded has yet to see a candidate pose a real challenge in the polls to donald trump. axios reports, -- is joining me now, with more on this. sophia, thanks for joining us on this. we appreciate it. just hours before tim scott made it official, you, in fact, where that is launching a nearly 6 million dollar ad buy in iowa and new hampshire as well.
12:02 pm
where does he stand in this race so far? >> well, this ad buy is significant. he's a prolific fund-raiser, he's making a statement, trying to make up the deficit, i, mean trump has already spent 13 million and desantis, although he is not announced yet, he has spent 10 million between the campaign and the pack. so, tim scott has a lot of room to make up, but he is the most prominent black republican, he's counting on his personal story as well as his faith to carry him through. >> you know, a lot of folks liked him and got in the republican party, they would like to see him pull through. i think the question is, whether or not they have the faith he can actually pull through, especially up against someone like the former president of the united states. when you're looking at wrong desantis, i'm wondering what the kind of talk is inside the party, as well, he's kind of running out of this idea that donald trump cannot win. the republican party needs to
12:03 pm
prop up winners, as he put, not losers, referring to the 2022-- how is that playing with rank and file republicans. especially, in congress. >> there is a lot of fighting over endorsements in some of these key states. i mean, in congress, trump was already able to announce, like, a slate of endorsements. by florida republicans on the day that desantis was in d.c., a couple weeks ago. trying to court the very same people. i mean, that kind of says a lot, considering desantis has already served in congress. at the same time, though, desantis hasn't announced yet. his team is saying, just wait. we have a lot of support. it hasn't come out yet. and we're talking about the two front runners here. >> again, i will remind folks, we are a year and a half away from this election.
12:04 pm
still a heck of a lot of time. anybody else out there that's gonna be announcing soon that could feasibly bake the former president a bit nervous? >> i really think the scout announcement is gonna be something to keep an eye on. chris christie, former governor of new jersey, has told people around him, he plans to run. both of these people have to answer the trump question. they really have to be able to have an argument to say, why me? and not trump? so far, only chris christie has come out criticizing former president trump. tim scott has not. >> sophia, we thank you. appreciate it. heading overseas, the president at the g7 summit in japan getting ready to meet with president zelenskyy of ukraine, and this is where our correspondent mike -- is in hiroshima for us covering it. at 404 in the morning. i believe? mike, thanks for joining us on this.
12:05 pm
busy first day for zelenskyy, to say the least, ahead of this meeting with president biden, talk us through it. >> yeah, that's right, it really is a sign of the step of urgency that president zelenskyy feels ahead of that planned counter offensive, his country is planning to wage, that he is making this surprise and during a visit here to japan to meet with individually and as a group members of the g7. we saw, on saturday, the shortly after he touched down in hiroshima, he met with the prime ministers of the uk, of italy, of india. as well as president macron of france, chancellor scholz of germany. the president of the european council, all meetings including some he just had in person in their countries. remember, he was in europe earlier this week, including a meeting with pope francis, followed by that trip to saudi arabia. the power of president zelenskyy's personal diplomacy really continues to be one of the big stories about how ukraine has been able to withstand russia's invasion for
12:06 pm
this long. it will continue when we see president biden have that face to face meeting with president zelenskyy here on sunday. the president making that big announcement, telling the other g7 leaders, he's now on board with that plan. to train and equip ukraine with these fighter jets, eventually. we shall we should emphasize, eventually. that's a long term play. more short term, the president is set to announce during that meeting today, another 375 million dollar arms package that is going to be sent to ukraine in the near term, to help with that spring offensive. so, it's a big opportunity for president zelenskyy to try and lineup, even more support, not just from allies who have been with ukraine from the beginning, countries like india who have been a bit on the sidelines, prime minister of india, in fact, telling zelenskyy, he's willing to do whatever it takes to see a peaceful end to this conflict. >> so, you've got the president, obviously, toggling what's happening at the g7, along with debt limit negotiations right here at home. i'm looking at some new reporting from jake sherman or
12:07 pm
tweeted out just about an hour or so ago, essentially saying, democrats in the white house and on capitol hill are saying negotiator going in the wrong direction. as the republicans demand to keep going further to the right. what more are you hearing about this? how kind of the camp of presidents camp is reacting, as he's overseas? >> yeah, there's a lot of optimism, even 24 hours ago, that turned south in hurry. president biden, when we heard from him, here on saturday, still said he was confident we could get a decent deal, as he put it. interesting choice of words there. we know that this has been a big discussion point behind the scenes as well. we heard national security advisor, jake sullivan, bring us inside the room a little bit about what the president has been hearing, take a listen. >> it is definitely a subject of interest. here at the g7. qatar is what i have a sense of how these negotiations are going to play out. and the president has expressed confidence that he believes that we can drive to an outcome where we do avoid default. part of the reason that he's returning home, tomorrow,
12:08 pm
rather than continuing with the rest of the trip, so he can help lead the effort to bring home. this is not generating alarm or a kind of vibration in the room, i would just say, the countries are keenly interested in what is a significant story. in the present has been able to tell them, you know, he believes that we can get to a good result here. >> so, yasmin, the last order of business for president biden here, later today on sunday, is that press conference. we haven't had a solo press conference as well. hopefully, will get a chance to really hear what some of those remaining sticking points are in whether he's able to get together with speaker mccarthy when he returns tried are those out. >> mike memoli we thank you my friend. coming up, everybody, just 60 seconds, a swing and a miss for the dodgers. the l.a. team's decision to disinvite a famed drag group from their annual pride night
