major highway collapse. it could -- big impact on travel. and the supply chain. we have a live report on that coming up. comprehensive coverage of the indictment of donald trump as he faces a tuesday arraignment on 37 criminal accounts connected with his hoarding of classified documents at mar-a-lago. the former president at this we can get his first public defense against the charges and a familiar refrain, he now has his 2024 primary opponents singing along with. >> the ridiculous and baseless indictment of me by the biden administration's weaponize department of injustice. >> when i'm your president, we will and the years of politicization and the department of justice. >> you can't have one faction of society weaponizing the power of the state against the factions that it doesn't like. >> not everybody in trump's orbit apparently got of the memo. >> it's very damning.

they say d of presenting trump as a victim here. victim of a witch hunt is ridiculous. >> we're gonna have much more and the miraculous story of four children at one under one years old. surviving four weeks. the 40 days in the jungle after a plane crash that killed their parents in the pilot, wait until you hear what they used to survive. that's coming up as well. but first, we want to get to that breaking news right now out of philadelphia. a key portion of the interstate 95. it's been shut down indefinitely after a truck fire causes section of the highway to actually collapse. this is part of the main highway corridor on the east coast. all the way up to canada. and we seize george soliz is there and philadelphia. it's astounding to think about what this could cause going forward when you have these kind of summer months, a lot of folks on the road going back and forth. to the beach. and then you see the photos of

that collapsed bridge there, george. what happened? >> yasmin, you nailed it on the head there. this is a major artery here in the northeast. that fire so intense at the northbound lanes collapsed. southbound lanes also compromise which is why officials had to shut down that entire section of 95. as we understand, there was a truck fire that was under the overpass. the intensity of the heat causing this to buckle. spoke to one man who was on the southbound lanes as this began to collapse on him. he had no idea the time -- amazingly so far there are no reported injuries. we know there is at least one of vehicle underneath the overpass. there are some flames that firefighters are working to put out there. reports of manholes that were exploding in the area. also a concern of runoff going right into the river. you have that component of this. a side from the traffic nightmare that is certainly impending. in the coming hours, especially as we get into monday in the morning commute. spoke to some officials here.

here's what they had to say. this investigation how one you could expect this person 95 to be closed, take a listen. >> this is gonna be today's gonna be a long day. obviously, with 95 northbound gone. southbound questionable. it's gonna be longer than that. this is all very preliminary right now. we want to tell you guys for the next couple of hours look like. what it looks like it's getting all those agencies involved. whether that weren't here in philadelphia. harrisburg or beyond. engage on the same page and make sure we understand what needs to happen. >> he has, when officials being pretty tale of beyond that briefing that took place this morning. they're putting some other updates online as far as different traffic routes, people can take for tomorrow. but again, at this point, undetermined amount of time how won this portion of 95 is going to be closed. this hour, we are waiting heavy machinery to get on the site to begin moving some of that rubble to see what is underneath what may have caused this fire.

if there are any unfortunate victims that may have been there at the time that this all collapsed. this is gonna be a lengthy investigation. pete buttigieg announcing that his agency will be providing any resources to the state to begin with the rebuilding and reconstruction which we know is going to be likely. yasmin. >> thank, you george, appreciate it. want to go from there to our big story of this hour. the historic arraignment of former president donald trump said to happen just over 48 hours from now. from voracious underway in florida for a massive security operation as trump will be arraigned for the second time in just two months. take that in for a moment. the second time in just two months. former president of the united states this time on federal charges. he and his aide -- said to surrender to miami authorities through on tuesday. we just got some information on the travel plans as well. ahead of that appearance. joining me now is nbc news justice and intelligence correspondent can do a knee. in miami. can, i may be joining you there

on the ground as a couple of days as we await the former president's arraignment are. three pm tuesday. tell us what you know when it comes to his travel plans. more word on that. >> hey, yasmin. that's, rages and nbc news from a trump campaign official is that he's going to be flying from bedminster to miami international airport tomorrow we're told. the interesting the night of his golf club inderal. which is about 20 minutes by car from here. trump national doral. that -- what that does is that makes the trip from hays where he's staying the night to this courthouse a shorter trip perhaps less of a security concern. 20, 30 minutes of any of the traffic if they choose to go by motorcade. that's a significant element. we thought to maybe staying at mar-a-lago which is much further away from here. as it turns out, they are short cutting that process. >> give us a sense of the play

by play on tuesday. we saw trump arraigned in manhattan here. it was about a 90 minute or so process. there was no mugshot. everything was done behind closed doors take us through what we know about how this is going to play out on a tuesday in miami. possible candidate frances here that we're expecting. >> there are some similarities and some differences. trump will turn himself in. he's surrendering to the very federal agencies that east oversee. he will be process but by the federal marshals were told in the fbi. they each have their own procedures for processing a person who is surrendering. at least the federal marchers untold there's no plans to deviate from their standard procedure. which is to take a mugshot. was not to be released. to take fingerprints. there are some other things they do if they don't discuss. including potentially dna.

the fbi normally has its own procedures often would turn him or herself us in -- the also fingerprinted and processed. it's believed that they will do it all in one location for security reasons. what's different on mr. trump as a new york as he will be accompanied by a secret service agent. normally, secret service agents and other federal officials are to bring the weapons into a federal courthouse. when they're engaged in their protective function, i'm told, they will allowed to be armed their committee mr. trump and protect him. the secret service will be in charge of protecting his life as they always are. as he moves into this courthouse. they aren't the only ones doing security around the courthouse the. federal marshals, the courthouse security folk, miami police. they're all engaging in intensive planning right now to keep this courthouse safe. >> speaking of security, quickly here or, any kind of where the potential threats there ahead of this arraignment? >> there are obviously a lot of trump supporters on social

want to bring now msnbc legal analyst and former u.s. attorney barbara quite a talk more about this. barbara, it's great to talk to you about this stuff. i want to play for you some sound from trump's former -- bill barr from earlier today. get your reaction on the other side. >> i think the counts under the espionage act. that he will fully retain those documents. solid -- i do think we have to wait and see what the defense says and what proved to be true. i do think that even half of what any mccarthy said which even half of it is true than he's toast. >> he's referencing comments made by former assistant u.s. attorney and are mccarthy who was on fox radio on friday saying the same thing. if they can prove half of, it he essentially is toast. what do you make of that? >> i have to agree with them. it's very significant these charges. to read the indictment is

really a con donation of just how reckless irresponsible don trump wasn't handling these documents. he talks about how these boxes were stored in a ballroom in mar-a-lago. where they hosted 150 events over the relevant time period. with tens of thousands of guests. and the content of these documents were things about military secrets. nuclear capabilities. information about foreign allies about our vulnerabilities. these things really fly in the face of the solemn promise of the commander-in-chief makes to take care of the laws we faithfully executed. and that all the people who serve in our military and our intelligence community sacrifice to reject our country. i agree with both -- and are mccarthy that if they can prove even one of these 31 documents was mishandled in this way i think that trump is toast. >> i thought when it was incriminating parts of talk about this over the last 48 hours or so of this indictment was his prior statements made back in 2016 on the campaign trail. whether or not he knew kind of

the importance of the handling of classified documents and what it takes when it comes to these classified markings and making sure you are not sharing them with other individuals. of course, he was commenting a lot back then on former secretary clinton's private email server. at one point he says administration, i'm gonna enforce all laws concerning the protection of classified information. no one will be above the law. how much of this stand out to you. how incriminating are these moments, these statements he is made in the past. >> i think they're important and i think the reason the prosecutors included them here was very strategic in light of the things on trump has already said publicly today. there is a reason lawyer so the clients of the talk about a case and, investigation publicly. but he has revealed at least one of his lines of defense which is i thought i could be classify these things just by thinking about them. we all know that's nonsense but if trump believes that, that

could be a defense because the espionage act unlike most crimes has as an element proving that the person's violation was willful. that is that they knew what they were doing was illegal. that is a diversion from the normal role that it was the laws no excuse. they had to prove not only that trump knew that he was doing these things but that he knew it was illegal. including those prior comments he himself made is very damning and i think eliminates that defense from this case. >> a tweet -- kind of showing a scope of where we are when it comes to the president and his legal woes and any says trump's legal woes by the numbers. 17 felonies for which is pisses was convicted. $5 million or to pay for sexually abusing jean carroll. 34 new york felony counts. 37 federal felony counts. to potential future indictments. countless former trump lawyers as well. he was also just in georgia yesterday where he could

feasibly be indicted next. -- we'll hear charging decisions on that likely in the coming months. we're looking at possibly early august. what do you make of this considering the fact of this is an individual who has already said no matter what he will continue to run for president and could possibly clinch the nomination and win the white house? >> i think it really speaks to how slow our criminal justice system is. i think ultimately justice will prevail and all trump will be held accountable for these crimes. in the meantime, he could, as you say, continues campaigning even be elected president again. i think the indictment was returned this week it demonstrates what a danger that would be. this is a person who was incredibly reckless and irresponsible in the trust that is given to him as president. when you think about how the intelligence community works. for now i share information with the united states. on the condition that we safeguarded. i don't think they will trust on her basic read those secrets in the future. >> barbara mcquade, as always,

out just over 48 hours away, from president trump saying he's staying in the race for president even if he's convicted on any of the 37 counts. in an interview politico on saturday, he founded this. i will leave. i don't think i'll ever have to. i didn't do anything wrong. meanwhile, trump's codefendant and body man will -- back out in public with the former president yesterday in georgia. just one day after the world learned he is the only other person charged in the

indictment. i'm gonna be miami by the way to report on the raymond on tuesday. right now, we'll bring in hugo lowell, political investigations reporter for the guardian to talk more about this. hugo, thanks for joining us on this. former obama attorney general eric holder was on it with my colleague jim psaki earlier. talking about specifically judge aileen cannon and her assignment to this case. and his lack of confidence in her with it. let's play a little bit of what he had to say and then we'll talk. >> based on what she did in the earlier phases of this matter, i'm not sure she has the legal acumen to be a judge in charge of such an important case. i don't think she has the ability based on what happened before and the way in which he was excoriated by the certain court for trying to interfere with the fbi search of mar-a-lago. i don't think she has the ability to produce --

project. i would hope that she would see within herself or somehow some way she is convinced that she should get off the case. >> any indication, any reporting that she would kind of quote unquote a see within herself as eric holder pointed to recuse herself from of this case. i feel like i know the answer to that. and then if there's really any kind of valid argument that can be made by prosecutors to try and get her removed here. it seems like there is not. >> yeah, special counsel's going to have to make a real decision as to whether they make a call to have a recused. at the end of the day, removing a judge who has been randomly assigned this case. because you think her prior rulings and separate litigation are not beneficial is gonna be

a problem in terms of optics, gonna be a real problem in terms of core precedent. the 11th circuit, there is no core precedent here diseases that she should recuse herself based on these courts. special counsel has made this call. i think it's gonna be a tough one as to whether they try and expedite this to the circuit court. >> what about will and nada? because the conversations surrounding him is whether or not prosecutors are to be able to get him to flip. essentially. to provide more information for them against the former president. we see him right here, just yesterday, he still right next to donald trump. he has been for quite some time now. what is that state to you? >> again, waltz got himself a difficult decision to make. there are two ways you can go about this. you can either cooperate with the government. now you testify against trump,

his own boss. and hope for a more lenient outcome at the end of the trial process. right now, he's a coconspirator for obstruction. as well as being charged with false statements. if he cooperates against trump, he can have one of the charges knocked out. maybe when the conspiracy charges knocked out. he still -- that's the one option. the second option for him is to not cooperate and hope that trump, that goes to trial. if he loses as a codefendant, then trump somehow gets back in the white house and down the line he gets a pardon. those are really bad options for now either way. the smart option in the view of every federal prosecutor we spoken to would be to cooperate with the government in this case because the evidence is just so large and the evidence is so compelling. the smart choice is to cooperate. that's the decision he's gonna have to make. >> hugo lowell, we appreciate

this is political in nature according to him. what the former president did in lindsey graham size is the same as democrats have done including the democrat who happens to be in the white house now. they have not faced the themed of the former president has despite of course the mountain of evidence that the prosecution laid out. the special counsel laid out in that unsealed indictment. lindsey graham echoing much of what we heard from majority of republicans up here who are making this a political argument. we heard from judiciary chairman also the chairman of the weaponization committee. really designed by this congress, this republican led congress to do just that. to investigate this alleged weaponization of the government against conservatives in this case. in chairman jordan's view, in this case it is against the former president and that is what he intends to do to use his platform to conduct some sort of oversight of this process. not clear how much you can be able to do of course in that. you also have some silence from prominent republicans. we've been talking about this for the last two days. it's notable we have not heard

for example from the minority leader of the senate republican mitch mcconnell. we haven't heard from a majority of leadership and that is notable. we don't expect to hear from them until at least they come back to the hill. you are right at that. we have heard from some republicans a very small amount including senator mitt romney who said the former president brought this upon himself. it'll be interesting to see this rhetoric that we're going to be able to see here once congress is back in session tomorrow. >> talk about the potential actions that the house could take. we saw the indictment of manhattan, the house tried to potentially trying to investigate manhattan d.a. alvin bragg there. what is the conversation right now when it comes to the special counsel jack smith after these indictments? >> it's not clear. chairman jordan who i was just talking about with you. he sent a letter to merrick garland that attorney general telling him that he has to explain his actions to the american people. when you control at one half of

one branch of government, all you can practically do's message on this issue. that's exactly what they're doing. they're not able to really make any legislative actions here. it's not clear because this is so unprecedented what they're even going to be able to do. we saw the case for example as you mentioned a new york d.a. alvon bragg they try to get him to basically call off his investigation to reverse course on his charges. of course, they weren't able to do that. they're gonna try to do some similar messaging here. this is all about the 2024 election and the person here who has been found indicted a federally indicted in this case is still the front runner of the republican party and of the republican nomination process. we're really in that moment. this is all they can do, message their voters and try to get them to see in their eyes of this is political despite what the special prosecutor is laying out here and with the direction of speaker mccarthy really having the wind in his sails. chairman jordy by jordan by leadership by republicans in the house. he's gonna be able to pushing on that.

including the january 6th attack on the capitol. all these things are unprecedented. it's not a response to trump that's unprecedented. it's what he has done. in the case now of what he's been indicted for. taking classified documents, knowing we taking them, knowingly concealing them. asking people to hide those documents from the national archives. . hide them from his own attorneys. that's unprecedented. it shows intent to deceive. it shows intent to conceal. that's what's really the problem here. we have a president who's acting unlawfully. that deserves to be indicted. it's not just democrats saying that if you go back to the second impeachment in 2021. folks like mitch mcconnell were arguing that trump couldn't be impeached at that time. he'd already left office. but he went on to suggest that trump could be subject to criminal prosecution in the

future. he actually said we have our criminal justice system in this country, we have a civil litigation and former presidents are not immune from being held accountable by either one. i suggest that's why mr. mcconnell has been a little bit quiet right now. he knows this is what's important. whereas we're seeing the house majority leadership taking a completely different tack and as they have for the past six years or so completely racing to trump's defense. making outrageous accusations against anyone who seeks to hold him accountable. >> do you expect senator mcconnell to issue a statement when he returns to the capitol this week admonishing the former president after reading through this indictment or do you think it's gonna be more of a -- kind of response to what is in these 49 pages? >> he's pretty much held his

we're learning more about a truly incredible story of survival in the amazon. for children all sibling went missing for 40 days after their small plane crashed in the jungle killing all the adults on board. after weeks of search and rescue efforts the children somehow, some way were found alive. nbc's melissa -- how the young children overcame the impossible. and how they're doing now. this is such an incredible story. i was locked in. it's unbelievable that they were able to survival for the 40 days, one of the children as young as one years old, what are we learning about them? >>, yeah i remember this was 40 days they were missing that child was 11 months old at the very start of this was the start of may when that plane had crashed. 40 days that young, young 11-month-old had turned into a one year old, they survived in the big part because of their indigenous teachings.

as you're about to see, as you're about to learn it wasn't just the clues left behind that led teams to understand that they had survived. but the clues also showed how they survived. >> the world cramped by this moment won an entire country hope for but feared would never come. these four siblings pulled to safety from the colombian jungle. against all odds they survived alone inside. their journey starts may 1st, a plane carrying seven people sites engine failure, and disappears from radar. the bodies of three adults including their mother were found in the wreckage. but the smallest passengers, for indigenous children, the oldest 13, the youngest just 11 months old nowhere to be found. the search began for what became known as operation esperanza, operation help, four weeks they search for signs of exactly that.
