made things. fotis disk constructed mentions, jennifer constructed plays and novels. together, they built an active life for their five children. but it all came crashing down when jennifer suddenly vanished, leaving a mystery which gripped the nation. here is dennis murphy with the day jennifer disappeared. but >> it is one of those places where the very wealthiest americans stroll charming boutique fronted downtown streets, and make their homes in lavish estates set on meticulously landscape plans. new canyon, connecticut, the goal coast of the new york city commuter belt. >> it's about 18,000 people, very wealthy, a great community, exceptional schools. a very low crime rate. >> a town where husbands are often in sorting orange jumpsuits, and counts of ankle bracelets. or the lush acreage of the park is for peaceful schools, not

csi teams looking for bodies. but in the spring of 2019, the park was teaming with police officers, searching for jennifer. a mother of five. the police chief, leon. >> we identified it as a missing person case combined with a criminal investigation. >> the well-to-do town became the setting for a mystery that captured the nation. >> -- >> hoping the mother is found safe. >> and the beautiful, glamorous people at the heart of the story pushed it to front page news. >> jennifer dulos was last seen taken her kids to school. >> shannon miller is a reporter with the nbc station in hartford >> it was a story with privilege people in big money and some of the wealthiest places in the country. >> you're talking about people who had their entire lives and had everything. >> since jennifer went missing, dateline has continued to have followed the investigation. reporting details of the case as they have unfolded. >> you can see the blood spatter. underneath the vehicles.

up the drive shaft. >> we found dna on the inside of the doorknob. >> and a stunning twist! >> initially reports came in that he was pronounced deceased. >> you just never know what somebody is capable of. >> and we asked the biggest question of all, where is jennifer? >> i believe someone knows something. i believe that someone has information. >> i have theories, i have ideas. >> the early thumb nail of the missing mom was this. jennifer dulos was 50 years old. a one-time new yorker, married to a luxury home builder named fotis dulos. they had five children together in 2017, she took the kids and left the marriage. moving from the family home in hartford connecticut, to a rental house in new canaan 70 miles away. two years later, just before memorial day no one knew where she was. >> we start to learn that she had several appointments in new york that she did not make so

her friends start to get concerned. and make a call to police. >> in those early moments, there was not much to go on and it was an overcast friday morning, may 24th. she dropped her kids off at their exclusive private school at 8 am. and seemingly walked off the face of the earth. when jennifer's friend rennae marie learned what was happening she had trouble coming up with a harmless explanation. >> one thing with jennifer was you never go out without your children. >> that's a part of the story that made no sense? >> exactly. >> it didn't make sense to the new canaan police either. after the call came in for jennifer's worried friends. officers fanned out. >> one of the questions early on, where is jennifer suburban? >> she took the kids to school. >> what happened? it wasn't at the house? >> we located it at one of the parks. and it was parked on the side of the road there. >> does that tell you a story?

just it being there? >> it was unusual. and certainly it caused us to search the park there. >> big park lot of acreage? >> 100 acre park. beautiful jogging trails. a mansion there. >> and a lot of places for people to look? >> a lot of places to look. and that involves canine teams. >> it was an exhaustive search. but no sign of jennifer. also no security cameras to check. so police canvassed joggers, motorists, young moms with kids in tow to see if they had seen jennifer. or anything unusual. >> had you seen anything weird anything like that? >> no. >> no leads but plenty of compassion for a neighbor. >> watching some breaking -- news coming in the bottom of this hour, it reported mass shooting in, according to police in baltimore, maryland, they are on the scene of that occurrence, which is believed to have happened just around midnight, just overnight.

we will get some details shortly, as we believe officials are walking to the microphones. this is happening overnight in the neighborhood called brooklyn homes the mend, that wasn't. >> officers received numerous calls for a shooting at 800 gretna court. when officers arrived, we located multiple victims, suffering from gunshot wounds. we located one female adult, deceased on the scene, nine additional victims were transported from the location to area hospitals. additionally, we had a 20 other victims walk into hospitals throughout the region. our detectives are currently working on an extensive crime scene. the two deceased victims we have are both adults. we have three other victims who are in critical conditions. our hearts and prayers are going out to the families, sending them out to the families, friends of his victims as well as the community and our entire city. this is an extensive crime scene, our detectives have been here quite a while. if anyone saw anything or knows

anything, please call 9-1-1 or call your local crime stoppers 1866 7 lockup. we have other jurisdictions working with us to try to determine this. when we call 18667 lock-up, this time i'll turn it over to the mayor. >> thank, you mr. commissioner. this morning, all of baltimore is grieving the lives that we lost here, our hearts are with all those who are still recovering at the result this mass shooting you heard this investigation is ongoing and our homicide detectives will continue to work until they find out what happened here. what we do know this morning, this was the reckless, cowardly act that happened here, and it has permanently altered many lives, cost people their lives. i want those responsible to hear me, hear me very clearly, we will not stop until we find you and we will find you.

until then, i hope with every single breath that you take that you think about the lives that you took, and that you think about the lives you impacted here tonight. we will also ask to anyone who knows anything about what happened here, anything that happened about this mass shooting to come forward of any piece of information treat this as if it were your family and how you would want people to treat it if you are in mourning, if it was your neighborhood, if this was an event in your community, we want you to treat it that way, that's how we have to treat each other as baltimore eons. we are mobilizing every resource in my power to embrace this community and support this community through this unspeakable tragedy. muncy will be conducting coronated neighborhood response and every single city agency will be in brooklyn to support this community, beginning later this morning. again, i want to express that this is an absolute tragedy.

neighborhood annually in the month of july, perhaps, which is a very large gathering. in total they say 30 people are affected, at 28 injured, two dead. they do not have much information, that they are releasing on the suspects. only that they are asking for more information from any of the local residents, citizens that may have video, details. again, 28 injured, two dead in an overnight party, what they are calling a block party in the area there in baltimore, maryland, happening within the last four or five hours. that is the latest on this breaking news story here on msnbc. we will have more for you later, but for now, back to normal programming, dateline continues now. >> did she let you know that? >> no, jennifer it was not that way. i mean, jennifer it would love to just curl up on a sofa, watch tv and had french fries and diet coke. >> jennifer is the same person

she was in the early 90s. >> carrie, one of her closest friends met her in graduate school in nyu way of study writing. >> she looked like a sort of intellectual version of cindy crawford. softspoken, -ing intriguing. very intelligent. >> what are her passions? what would she like to put on her blind piece of paper? >> that's a good question. i think her writing centers around a need to be loved. and a need to be seen. as one's true self. >> and she did find love. in 2004, jennifer married fotis dulos, a classmate from howard university. who was raised in greece. a second marriage for him. jennifer and he had five children together. including two sets of kids. all athletic like their parents. even as toddlers, they were daredevils on the black diamonds slopes of aspen, colorado. and with her dad's coach, the boys became national champion water skiers. impression of.

angelica is goodness fotis. >> you are a very active family? >> yes. it's in our dna. we enjoy a lot as a family bonding. >> tell me about your uncle's personality. what do you like about him? >> his never ending energy. and his positive way of looking into life. he never stops trying, he is a fighter. >> in some of the most upscale communities of connecticut. fotis established himself as an award-winning builder of custom, luxury homes. and appeared in online office work. >> i'm fotis and i'm the owner of this group. >> they settled west of hartford. in a spectacular six bedroom, seven bathroom home. built by fotis. jennifer posted stories about the joys and trials of being a mother. mostly the joys. >> she started writing light hearted whimsical anecdotes about being the mother of five young children.

from the outside looking in, a great life. but inside the walls of their 14,000 square foot mansion, the marriage had become of fixer upper. it's not a tear down. jennifer discovered fotis was having an affair. >> and who was the girlfriend? >> this was a woman named michelle troconis. she is a 44-year-old international business woman. working at this argentinian ski resort. this is a place where politicians go to ski. pop celebrities go to ski. she's with the movers and shakers. >> after learning about michelle, jennifer stayed with fotis for a few months. but eventually decided that her marriage was broken beyond repair. so on june 19, 2017. after 13 years of marriage, jennifer packed her five kids into her car and left home. she did not tell fotis. he called 9-1-1 that night. >> 9-1-1. what is the location of your emergency?

>> i'm worried about my wife and kids. i haven't been able to get in touch with them. >> how many kids? >> five. >> five kids? >> the next day she filed for divorce. this was a high stakes case with five children, and a lot of assets hanging in the balance. and things got ugly. there were hundreds of motions filed in court. and many of them, the vitriol jumps off the pages. jennifer described fotis behavior as irrational, unsafe, bullying, threatening, and controlling. she said, i am afraid of my husband, i know that filing for divorce will enrage him. she said that fotis would retaliate. and allege that he had described sickening revenge fantasies. >> some things which are very tough to read. talking about his scary revenge fantasies. how she is frightened of him. do you hear your friends jennifer's voice in there? >> yes. it resonates with me. >> did he literally fight in her? >> i think she was frightened.

>> fotis emphatically denied the allegations. and said that she was taking medication for mental health issues. a spokesperson for jennifer's family told dateline, that jennifer always took excellent care of her mental well-being. the divorce proceedings dragged on for almost two years with no resolution. it was better, and expensive. but the couple did seem to move on with their lives. >> it didn't last forever. it happens in life, that sometimes couples have to take their different paths. >> fotis started living with his girlfriend michelle at the house and farmington. while jennifer began building her new life with her kids in new canaan. and then, on that cloudy friday morning, she disappeared. all over the state and beyond, police were working around the clock. the sense of urgency was palpable.

the missing mother of five on her lavish new canaan home. the places where they found blood spatter in the garage. and they scoured the park nearby where they discovered her suv. but a week after jennifer disappeared, nbc connecticut reporter, shannon miller, says all that changed. >> this investigation takes a major turn. that's where we learn for the first time that police are really invested in the hartford area. >> miller says that police had descended on hartford connecticut. 70 miles away from canaan, a place not far from where jennifer's estranged husband fotis, lived with his girlfriend michelle troconis. >> by now, the new canaan chief of police had called in the cavalry. from state police, to u.s. marshals, to the fbi. all we're trying to find jennifer. >> why did investigators start concentrating on hartford estates? >> that was because of mr.'s cell phone that was seized and

analyzed. and that identified some information that he was traveling in the area of hartford. >> as part of the earlier investigation, police had as to her estranged husband to turn over the phone. he agreed. quick forensic analysis showed the cell phone pinging along the busy street in hartford, at 7 pm in the night jennifer disappeared. >> and when you go to those streets. where are you? >> specifically i believe it was on albany avenue in hartford. and the investigators looked through there and they contact the hartford intelligence center that provided some video. >> the video came from the capital city command center, this high tech facility that captures feeds from more than 700 cameras placed on busy streets and intersections throughout hartford. as luck would have it some of the cameras were positioned on this avenue. >> what are the pictures show? >> the pictures show folks we

believe are fotis and michele dropping off bags and variety containers along that stretch. >> a potentially huge break in the case. and police believe that in the video, like this one, was the black ford f-150 raptor. he was now the main focus in jennifer's disappearance. the chief and his team declined to release the video to the public. >> a vehicle like fotis, a woman like his girlfriend, a guy who looked like him? >> that's right. >> the media could not report this information fast enough. front page news. besides the video of the garbage dumping, they also had footage of someone that they believe was dulos. it's shoving a fedex box down a storm drain. >> the fedex box has to license plates inside that have been altered? >> especially with the dulos family. >> cars that have been registered at one point with the family. >> they looked inside and

sought to license plates that had doctored using tape. >> you start to wonder why anyone would alter license plates? >> and then trash? it >> exactly. >> detectives went to work trashing the scene and fishing out the garbage bags. but they weren't quick enough to get all of them. >> so the garbage has been picked up and taken someplace? >> right. at least some of it. >> the bags that they missed were taken to a large trash facility where people began sifting through the garbage. >> investigators were trying to figure out, is there anything that has been collected here? that might lead us to learning about what happened to jennifer? >> what it down on your hands and knees job. >> absolutely. we are talking heat, we are talking stench. we are talking piles of trash that these two investigators are searching through. >> while detectives were busy, the connecticut state lab was examining the contents of the recovered garbage bags and the blood found in jennifer's garage.

hours top stories. breaking news out of baltimore, maryland this morning. police say overnight there was a mass shooting in the brooklyn holmes neighborhood at an annual block party. police say there are a total of 30 victims, including two people who have died, three people in critical condition. several others have been taken to area hospitals. police did not have a motive at this time, nobody has been arrested in connection with the shootings. we will bring you more information on this breaking news as it becomes available. now, back to dateline. now, back to dateline.

>> the search for connecticut missing mama continues to be in the local 11:00 news throughout the summer of 2019. >> anyone with any information is asked to visit find jennifer dulos.com. >> every branch of a law enforcement worked on a particular piece of the puzzle. forensics focused on what was found in jennifer's garage. >> the blood in jennifer's garage, chief, can you quantify? it >> it was a substance which appeared, like blood in the garage, and subsequently, there was present of tests, that it was human blood. >> dna tests are really human blood belong to jennifer dulos. the chief says they were more clues about that blood. >> there was an appearance that it tried to be cleaned up. >> reports from the jennifer dulos missing person case continue to drop on the chiefs desk. and the news was a grim. the state crime lab sent over the results funnels garbage bag dumped police believe by fotis

dulos and michelle troconis. through court documents, sharon miller learned what was inside those bags. >> clothing, sponges, and later mops. that we learned, from testing at the state crime lab, contained jennifer dulos's blood. >> so these are bloody artifacts? >> bloody artifacts in the middle of downtown hartford. >> and you think they found in a bloody short, like one day when that day? >> it was a teacher that she loved to wear and a bra that was found that trash can. >> police are not calling this of a side, but they were convinced crimes had been committed. and they're pointing fingers at photos to us, and michelle troconis. nine days after jennifer witness, detective tracked the pair to a hotel in avon connecticut, and arrested them both. >> on june 2nd they were arrested for criminal prosecution and tampering with evidence. >> they appeared in court the next day.

troconis wearing the clothes she was arrested in. >> she immediately comes out of the squad car with their head that. this is not someone who wants to be seen. at all. on camera. >> fotis was in an orange jumpsuit. >> do you know you're white this? anything to say? >> they both pleaded not guilty and they're held on $500,000 bond. the judge ordered them not to have any further contact with one of them. jonas put the money that day in was released. but not to those. >> she comes out of the courthouse where in her ankle bracelet. sweater over her head. >> then we learned that fotis does not have enough money to bail himself out. >> but he's the builder 15,000 square foot luxury homes? he should have a lot of money? only needs $15,000? >> right, but apparently that was too much. in fact there are other signs dulos was having many trouble. jennifer's mother's ball a lawsuit claiming he owed her close to $2 million. in court filings, she indicated it was money he borrowed to fund his luxury home building business.

>> so monday certainly issuing the dynamics of this family? >> right. >> a week later, douglas was able to come up with the cash and came up with his own ankle bracelet. at his bond hearing, the prosecutor delivered another gut punch. fotis's dna was found next to jennifer's blood on the faucet in her kitchen. >> is that, and itself, incriminating? >> it is certainly a big part of the puzzle. >> by the end of summer 2019. police had gathered enough evidence to arrest dulos and michelle troconis on another charge of tampering with evidence. and the arrest warrant affidavit, detectives outlined more evidence against dulos. >> sergeant canned ventricle of the connecticut state police, took us inside the investigation. revealing new details of what happened the day jennifer disappeared. he says very early that morning, fotis douglas was seen on video. leaving one of his properties and farmington, about two miles from his home. he was driving a red tacoma pick up truck. >> you see him pulling out the residents of the red tacoma, at 5:22 in the morning. okay.

little bit weird, right? >> why is a red tacoma pick up interesting? >> this is not his vehicle. >> we had spoken with his worker he said hey, i had fotis is raptor up with me that day. and i left my tacoma with him. >> the employees right tacoma pick up truck was a major. cue the sergeant and his team search surveillance videos for that truck and spotted in several places along the 70 mile stretch from farmington to cater. >> we pulled schoolbus video which is how we are able to capture it. >> the truck was parked three miles from jennifer's house. >> so how is going to get the arising from the vehicle to his ex-wife's house? >> so, initially, maybe he jogged over. there >> what did eagle eyed detective swath of something that gave them a new theory. and one of the more than 200 videos the police have gathered, he noticed a bike tire in the back of the red truck. and aha moment. dulos, on a bike. >> so we just went back the video and all the houses of a pack we can travel.

lo and behold, -- we got him on a bike. he's wearing all black. a black hoodie. black clothing. looks like the grim reaper on a bicycle. keep in mind, it's may. and is very warm out. >> it's not suburban dad to his morning exercise? >> the style of the bike was extremely unique. the main model was immerse ear. >> the videos continue to tell police the story. at 7:30 am, the man on the bike and seen heading towards jennifer's house. police believe it was dulos, who then sneaked into the garage and lay in wait. i data 5 am, jennifer suburban is captured on video returning to her home after dropping off her kids at school. what happened next, the sergeant couldn't fully speculate. >> what do you think happened of a garage, what do you let the belief? >> my personal beliefs based on the blood spatter a serious violence assault occurred in iraq. whether she was bludgeoned to

death, standing up, and they found the four between the vehicles. and you can see the blood spatter underneath the vehicles. underneath the drive shaft. i meet the passenger floorboards. >> two hours later, at 10:25 am. jennifer's suv is spotted again. this time, leaving her house. >> so the body you assume was then moved in a suburban. >> correct. >> the sergeant released photos do list made a short drive and jennifer suburban back to the park. and then transfer the body and clean the backs into his employees pick up truck. >> did he get incredibly lucky not being scene? >> incredibly lucky. >> the sergeant reveal something we haven't heard before. by tracking jennifer cell phone from her house to the park. please establish what they believe was a suspicious window of time for dulos. >> from 10:30, 11:09, her phone stayed in that park. it didn't move. that 11:09 her phone cuts powered down. and you see him traveling in his tacoma north.

it's safe to say, he spent about 40 minutes in the area. we don't know what he was doing in the area for 40 minutes. >> was he disposing of jennifer's body? please do know he was next seen about an hour and 15 minutes later, back at that property in farmington. where he started off his morning. >> that's investment properties been working on? >> yes, owned by the full group, the house was outside the time. lucky for us the neighbor across the street had an amazing surveillance property. that's how we're able to see him get back to 80 miles per hour. >> as the weeks pass, police continue to search for jennifer with no luck. and photos do those, continue to proclaim his innocence. when we come back, you will hear from the man himself. >> coming up. the interview that got everyone talking. >> do you believe jennifer is alive? >> i do. >> when dateline continues. s shingles is likely already inside of you. 50 years or older?

>> welcome back, police were closing in on fotis. they believed he murdered his wife jennifer, then covered up the crime with the help of his girlfriend, michelle troconis. now investigators were about to reveal a chilling new piece of evidence in the case against fotis. here is dennis murphy with the conclusion of the day jennifer disappeared. >> four months after our interview with fotis, there was a knock on his door. police arrested him for jennifer's murder. states attorney, richard calandrello, the head of the investigation, told dateline he waited until he had an airtight case before filing the homicide charge. >> i want to make sure that we had all the information we are able to. to prove the case when we went forward.

i knew attorney path is it's a great turning it's going to attack everything that we do. >> in addition to the mouths of evidence already disclosed. the prosecutor revealed a new clue that he says proves davis plotted his estranged wife murder. >> most telling us that the supplies that were cut had jennifer's blood on them. >> this is a new element a lot of us. what are the zip ties? >> our theories that they were used to incapacitate jennifer in the garage. >> calandrello believes that he brought this in times with him planted to control jennifer. but things took an unexpected turn when she fought for her life, and that explains all the blood in the garage. the zip ties were later found in those garbage bags where we say douglas was dumping on albany avenue. the prosecutor also had new evidence that he says indicates, after the bloody battle in the garage, do those then put jennifer's body in the back of her suburban.

he appointed to another albany video collected by police. >> one of the things that was pretty clear in the video was mr. dulos dropping off twitter appears to be kind of, one of those weather tech at that came from the back of jennifer suburban. >> as the motive, he had a theory. >> so with his wife jen for that house's life better? i swear look at the money trail? >> honestly, again, it is hard to speculate on our part. one working theory, if you look at the warrant, was that the children came with money. >> he can access their money? >> that was one of our working theories, yes sir. >> with the help of a friend, he posted a 6 million-dollar bond. was back on the same day. still, under house arrest. but the prosecutor soon learned there was an issue with his bond -- >> the house that he put up as collateral was under foreclosure. >> the prosecutor pushed to have the bond revoked, which meant he would be sent to jail.

>> i reach out was to try to bring him in, and the judge wanted to be brought to court that day. >> but he never showed. because of his ankle bracelet colitis house. >> actually called the state police with his lawyer in my office to say, hey, you know what, reach out of farmington and deal with her check because he's thrown for me tonight on what's going on. when police arrived dulos was in his garage in his vehicle. he had attach flexible tubing to the exhaust pipe sending carbon monoxide into her suburban. the fsb captured this video of law enforcement giving to those cpr. the sergeant got a call from police on the scene saying that he was unresponsive. >> initially, reports came to that is pronounced deceased but they did lifesaving efforts and they got a pulse. >> douglas was airlifted to a hospital new york city and put in a hyperbaric chamber to treat the carbon monoxide poisoning. it didn't work. >> fotis is in hospital lingering on life support. the children ever get to say

goodbye? >> they did visit him in the hospital when they transported over there. they did bring us get to visit him. >> two days later, he was taken off life support and died. >> double stop the suicide note. what, to you, is of interest in it? >> it is hard honestly. looking at that note. what struck me is him indicating that he had nothing to do with the crime that he was allegedly to of committed. and that the other people that is charged with weren't involved either. so if he didn't do it, how did he know whether they involved or not? >> the other people were michele troconis. charged with conspiracy to commit murder, along with a new player in this murder mystery. >> who is the man int his case that starched? he's an attorney, someone who knew potus? >> we ken was charged with conspiracy to commit murder. >> while he represented to this in a civil case, he was in tulsa's office the morning jennifer disappeared. who's also the founder of a hunting club nearby. they's before jennifer went missing, a the poll was

discovered on the 25 acre hunting club property and was later reported to police. >> somebody reached out to us saying we found this hole that seem to be like a grave. there was lime bags in it. >> police searched property with ground penetrating radar and found the hole. >> we do get up, and in minutes it's six feet long, probably about four feet deep. >> the outline of it was kind of in the shape of a grave. it is hard to speculate on what they're going to do. >> even the girlfriend, or the store front, could there be a deal on the table? if they come to the authorities and say, i can take you to jennifer's body? >> i really can't talk about pending cases. but i'm always open to people bringing us information. that is going to help us find where jennifer is. >> both michel troconis and kent mawhinney have pleaded not guilty. with jonas's attorney told dateline not only is his client innocent, the evidence against or is misleading. in the videos where, according to police, michelle helped him

dump those but garbage bags. her attorney said he seen them, and she leans out of the truck for less than two seconds. never helping him. he wouldn't comment on this but says the case is far from over. >> those cases are pending. to be honest with you, even those cases weren't pending, the case would be open to find jennifer. >> and the question, where is jennifer dulos, is an urgent one for her family and investigators. according to law enforcement timeline, there were at least two windows of opportunity when douglas could've dispose of jennifer's body. the first was those 40 minutes unaccounted for and -- >> we don't know what he was doing the area for 40 minutes. >> the second occurred later in the day when his back working at the farmington house. at 2:24 pm, a white jeep register to do this company was seen on video leaving the property and wasn't seen again for 90 minutes, until it returned at 3:55 pm. one theory, says the sergeant, dulles might have taken a ten minute drive to this unoccupied 22,000 square foot mansion.

>> is it true that you are looking at the houston haven which is very near that area? >> the property came up because photos that parents done some work at the house. it flooded out, and they don't some work on the property. >> jennifer had also lived in the house for a short time in 2010. >> connecticut state police have not said how long they expect to be out here today, but again, they say this is an effort to leave no stone unturned. >> using canine units, police searched the wooded area around the property, and had the septic tanks searched. but, no sign of jennifer. >> where do you think she is? >> i have theories, i have ideas, there's a lot of property up there that mr. dulos owns in farmington. >> we're gonna search everything in everything. but someone told us -- will come out, absolutely. >> do you think a finder? >> we are still actively investigating, we stop a lot of stuff we are doing. i'm confident we are going to find her.
