the iowa versus iowa state football game. but his trip comes amidst this exclusive reporting from msnbc about serious concerns when it comes to his ground game in the crucial state. and it's coming in the wake of new developments in the georgia election interference case. that includes a big loss for trump's former chief of staff and current codefendant, mark meadows. plus, republicans hoping a re-brand will reverse ballot box fortunes when it comes to abortion rights. on the ballot. and -- that you see is so puppet in the country is happening in texas, in the impeachment of and 30 general ken paxton. that includes tears, a political back, fighting allegations of an extramarital affair. we have those details later on than the hour. we want to start, that, with that breaking news from out of morocco. and the devastation -- the video showing the moment

this 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit six miles in the city of marrakech. café goers can be seen frantically running out of a restaurant, trying to get to a safe area right at the moment of the quake. officials say more than 1000 are dead, and that number is likely to rise. it is the strongest quake to hit the north african country in decades. sky news correspondent -- has more. >> it struck on a busy friday night. morocco's tourism capital, marrakech, buzzed with people. who fled from restaurants and shopping centers as debris fell all around them in the historic city center. destroying cars and trapping people under the rubble. this is the worst earthquake the region has seen in years. it was felt as far as portugal. >> [speaking in a non-english language] >> translator: we were surprised by an intense

vibration. everything in the house was moving. we don't know what happened. >> [speaking in a non-english language] >> translator: i was in my house. i saw people going outside, i heard a lot of, noise i thought it was rain. it was the sound of the earthquake. >> the damage was felt in the heritage site of the medina. but the worst hit areas where the count and villages of the atlas mountains. less than 50 miles of the video, where -- it will take gazed to gauge how deadly this earthquake. is videos from the hardest hit areas are any indication of scale, the number of that will continue to rise. in marrakech, they light exposed the sheer scale of destruction. homes flattened and a frantic recovery still underway. >> typically, the first few days and hours is critical for the response. so, the key now is to focus on those potentially still alive and buried under the rubble.

especially for the moroccan people on the government to, navigate this. infrastructure is disrupted. communications are disrupted. some of the provisioning, water, things like, that are all disrupted. so, it complicates that in addition to travel. so, what team rubicon is a humanitarian let organization tries to do is identify and met needs and coordinate with the moroccan ministry of health and the government to see where we can augment without creating unnecessary burden on them as we go through this really important face of recovery and search and rescue. >> so, let's talk about that coronation because as you see in countries like this before, the resources, the area to provide to the people in which they need to. so, what do they need? are they getting and the? where is the focus? >> i think right, now the picture continues to be clear that they will have needs. but it's not exactly certain what will be required. we typically see in these types

of earthquakes, search and rescue will be a priority. and then, a lot of injuries. , so as these numbers mount, not only of people who lose their lives in the stuff, but these different types of injuries you see in earthquakes estevan to recover, people as you begin to identify some of these folks that will have crush injuries, which are a typical in a normal hospital. that is where we could begin to augment. and i think the global community will all contribute in some form or fashion from the united states, europe, and other countries to 80s people in these times of need. >> what is your biggest concern right now just these last kind of 12 to 18 hours since this earthquake happened? >> we have been watching this carefully. we are not unfamiliar, we are actually founded after the haiti earthquake. so, whatever our primary concern is is doing whatever we can stateside. assembling the team, the equipment, and then getting our assessment team, it's melting before we expect to be on deck

where the former president and several other candidates, as well, are hoping to gain some ground voters this weekend. they do so after the release of a report from the special grand jury in georgia, revealing the alleged conspiracy to overturn the election is even more extensive and than previously thought. despite this revelations, the former president's opting to spend the afternoon at a football game between the states to bitter rivals, the university of iowa and iowa state. nbc's aly ruff is on the ground for us in ames, iowa, with more. ali, good to talk to get. what are you hearing on the ground there? >> hey, yasmin. we spoke with quite a few iowa republican voters before they all started sort of flocking to the stadium here for this game that is set to begin in roughly 20 minutes. sort of the gist we got from voters on the ground here, the majority of them had told us that they see a potential in other gop candidates besides trump.

i spoke with one republican who said that she voted for trump in 2016, again in 2020, but this time around, she just thinks he has too much legal baggage. the messaging and the role of the presidency has sort of been lost in the messaging around his campaign. she says that she is planning to caucus in january for ron desantis, because he comes to the table with tangible plans. i also spoke with a young republican named lucas, who really wasn't moved by any of this legal package surrounding trump as pharmacies for criminal indictments. he said his support is solid, and he says nothing is going to be able to change that. take a listen to more of my conversations with these two. >> i feel that he has too much baggage with his legal battles, and our country is facing a lot of problems. we need to unify, and i feel like with him, there is going to be a lot of fighting. we never even once said, yes i,

did wrong yes, i could've done this better. it was always know, i never did anything wrong. i'm always. right. and that, to me, if i'm sorry, you lost me. >> -- trump needs to do anymore, because i feel like a lot of his supporters already have his -- i think it is. i think he's doing the right thing of not going to the debate, because i think everyone already knows his opinions and everything,, from what he's done in his past presidency. >> and yasmin, what struck me most for my conversations with republicans like hawley, who are planning to caucus for someone other than trump, what they said about the other candidates, as far as timing. they were confident that with four months left until caucus day, they say there is still time for these candidates to make some sort of dent in this massive disparity, this massive gap in support with trump currently enjoying and over 30 percentage point lead over ron desantis, as well as the other gop rivals, yasmin. >> i wonder if they're also

picking up in the new nbc news exclusive reporting that i do want to ask you about. it's shedding some light on trump's campaign, saying a number of trump allies are urging a wake up call. suggesting, perhaps, this big lead he is enjoying is not built to last. and he doesn't have as strong of a ground game in iowa as he did in the past. say, back in the 2016 lead up. what are you hearing about that? >> yeah, these trump allies are worried that that strong lead in the polls isn't enough to prevent gop rivals from sort of poking holes in this armory. what we're seeing on the ground here, when i had a conversation with republicans, is they say that as far as the ones who planned to caucus for trump, they don't think they need to see any more of him. they even said they don't believe he even needs to appear at any more of the gop primary debates. but these allies are saying that this lack of engagement, this lack of presence here in

iowa, lack of a ground game comparing to trump's gop rivals, is giving a window of opportunity to those candidates to sort of take advantage of the situation, and make a come back. but as we mentioned, the trump campaign is vehemently denying. that the saying trump hasn't had the presence in past campaigns because he is dealing with the legal proceedings surrounding his for criminal indictments. at this point, yasmin, it's going to come down to whether these voters are going to expect sort of a traditional strategy that they expect of other gop candidates when it comes to caucusing and iowa, or whether they sort of give donald trump essentially a past, as far as what traditions say on polls. >> gotta love allie raffa's move aside. listen, it's a football game. folks trying to get their moments of sunshine. >> it is. >> allie there is talking to -- allie raffa for us, thank you.

she adds, wrapping it up nicely with not change voters minds about abortion. we're going to talk more about this, -- pro-choice america president a mini at remote. joe is going to talk to you about the soft. supposedly, it's kind of re-branding, this potential re-branding, i should, say came from this closed-door meeting. republican senator who took a look at a poll and we're told, essentially, or shown, essentially, right, that this term, pro-life, it's not resonating with voters. they feel like the term pro life is very black and white. what do you make of this potential re-brand? >> i have to agree completely with my friend katrina, ultimately, re-branding isn't the problem for the gop. especially on this issue. the problem is the rhetoric doesn't match their actions. they've claimed for decades to

be a pro-life party while simultaneously opposing proactive measures that would help families, women, and children. the idea that they're even considering a re-brand of abortion policy and extremist abortion policy, as pro baby when they still can't support comprehensive paid family leave and child care programs with maternal health care programs. i've said this before, but the stage of the most egregious abortion bans have the worst maternal health outcomes. they know that they're losing, this is grasping, with the american voters are inherently spine. they understand the pro-life doesn't signal a party the supports actually if. >> i want to talk about actual -- the study from this institute is pretty astounding. the 230% increase to this date -- for instance, new mexico, where abortion is legal because women

are coming from out of state to seek out abortion services. i think that colorado is also up 89% as well. i know that i traveled with a group of women, 20 or so, texas to new mexico to seek out abortions. it's before they overturn of roe. they've talked about how resources are pushed to the brink at that clinic. you think about this now 20 percentage point increase right now. what's happening at these clinics? >> we have to give a lot of credit to the independent abortion, writers planned parenthood, the abortion funds, they're really doing the heavy lifting here to make sure that prominent people, women that need these resources in band states are able to cross lines and get access to care. it doesn't just mean the procedure, it means hotel rooms, and it means pied paid time off for days that they need to take. most of these women are working women with kids. it means childcare. it is a herculean effort to get patients from a pet lace like

texas to a neighboring state like new mexico. the abortion access infrastructure in the states that still have legal protective abortion is incredibly stressed. while we are doing a lot of preventative measures by funding abortion funds and having everything we can ultimately what it shows us is that we have a change in federal policy. the state by state patrick of access is not destined to work forever. i think that it's incredible that these rates are so high. we've been told stories that people are getting the care, making it happen, but they are not seeing the stories of the folks that can't lead the states. they are not getting enough attention for the states taking punitive measures for people that are leaving their state for care. >> as always, thank you. after the break, everybody, tracking hurricane lee as it moves through the atlantic ocean. why meteorologists are saying that the storms could be an indicator for what huge future

6.8 magnitude earthquake hitting about 200 -- 11 pm yesterday each weekend. about 300 people -- an incredibly popular tourist destination. a lot of americans, many people overseas visiting morocco. it's specifically merry marrakech throughout the weekend. we're going to keep our eyes and ears peeled on the story as it plays out. we are already watching hurricane lee as it turns its way along the atlantic ocean. the forecast gaining strength and strengthening next week, but still very much -- dangerous surf and rip currents to the u.s. -- joining us now at the very latest on this. karen and i have been talking about this for quite some time. as this thing was initially even forming out there, it's been kind of incredible to watch it as it is now approaching our coast.

what can we expect? >> we've been watching this for a while, you guys are been watching for, well we'll continue to watch it for a while. it's going to continue to slow down big time as we go through the work week. we saw category five status last -- 85 miles an hour in 12 hours. that is phenomenal. we have seen it weaken into a category three storm. that's still a strong storm. here's the good news, looking at direct impact, the western antilles, puerto rico, virgin islands, they can see some high surf. they are seeing some high surf. also some life-threatening rip tides. that is it. you want to be careful if you're in any of those destination through the waterways. we are working it winds through 115 miles an hour. still a strong storm, not the codified that we saw yesterday. we are expecting it to increase as we go through monday and tuesday, that's the weekend once again. it's the -- moving pretty quickly now, but going to slow down big time. i'll show you why. we're going to repeat this track as we go down that time. we're going to be talking about this all week long through next weekend.

case handed down a decision. denying mark meadows's request to move his case to federal court. meadows's already said that he will file an appeal. meanwhile, legal experts are analyzing the implications on the release of this court report from the special grand jury in georgia, which initially recommended that means for 20 additional people, including senator lindsey graham. a former federal prosecutor and contributing writer for politico is joining me now. thank you for joining us on this, we appreciate it. essentially, judge saying here that the judge actions, mark meadows actions were not part of his it fischel duty. denying the request to move to a federal court. what does that say ultimately? what are the implications ultimately for his defense going forward? >> it doesn't knock out one seemingly pretty decent defense. at least among the potential defenses that he might have. i would write that that is one that i would pay attention to if i was his lawyer. it was an uphill battle. this is an area of the law that

is not particularly well developed, or involves a lot of precedent. he took a pretty aggressive decision. him and his lawyers and port court. i thought his decision was lengthy, well reasoned, persuasive. now he is subject to the appeal process. it is going to be lumped back in with everyone else in georgia. assuming that that appeal does not pan out his way. >> what does this say about the other folks, specifically the former president, who asked for this to be moved to a federal court? >> it is not a good sign for trump and his effort to do something similar. however, trump has yet to go through with that filing and fully brief it the way that meadows lawyers have. one advantage that trump and his lawyers have is that they get to see how the judge will rule for some arguments that jet meadows made, and mostly different -- -- did not work, and mick craft their presentation to be more successful and work around those hurdles. there is a strategy behind

waiting a little bit. it is not necessarily the case just because meadows lost, trump will lose to. i expect him to put up a better showing on these issues. >> what i found interesting was the number of witnesses heard by this most recent grand jury report released, 75. there were nine heard by the grand jury that indicted, ended up indicting the former president, along with the other codefendants. it wasn't 150 plus mentioned by the state in the chesbrough hearing a couple of days ago as well. what does that say to you about the breath of the case that fani willis has? the strength of her case? >> what it says is that it is really exhausted it, appears. their efforts to find as many witnesses as they could on as many subjects that they could kind of shore of the case as much as they could. it is a large number of people. it suggests particularly comprehensive and aggressive

constitution and the separation of powers, and also his continued use of his position of power. i think that in addition to that, it is a check on all of those individuals that are sitting in positions of power, who continue to abuse, to bully, and to crop up unjust and unconstitutional systems. in this case, to the highest levels of government to prop up the criminal enterprise. >> do you think it'll change anything? >> i think that what it does is really put a check on mr. jordan to tell the american people that what he's saying is not only factually untrue, but it's also a violation of his own oath of office, and his own participation in this criminal enterprise. will it change anything in american politics? obviously not. this is clearly a political action by chairman jordan, and as we are seeing across our government in the house of representatives right now, the gop extremists that are holding the majority are holding their

positions of power to prop up donald trump in this criminal enterprise. these activities, because what they care about more than anything else is not the american people, but their own positions of power. >> so you just said, the house republicans continue to defend donald trump, indictment after indictment, after indictment. now we are hearing the course of a possible impeachment inquiry, marjorie taylor greene making threats about that as well, talking about finding the government. when you think about that possibility, what's your plan? the plan of the democrats, if in fact they launched their impeachment inquiry to the president? >> i think that it demonstrates the depths to which kevin mccarthy, those in leadership right now, the house gop, are willing to go. they are willing to undermine the basic democratic and constitutional responsibilities and institutions to wage a political war against a sitting president, and all of those public officials out there serving our communities. i think that what is

particularly disturbing about the threat of an impeachment, there is absolutely been no investigation. there has been no due process. there is been no grounds on which the even bring the impeachment. it just demonstrates the continued political attacks on our democracy. our plan as democrats is to continue to serve the american people, to show up, to go and vote, to go and make sure that we are responsible for our oaths of office. and we continue to work hard to adjust to the issues that people care about. the economy, public health, the drug addiction crisis, and our environment. we are going to continue to work for the american people, and in my case, for the people of new mexico. >> let's talk about the portion of that economy. that is funding the government. you have a deadline of september 30th at the household session, 11 days of september. you have threats, as i mentioned, from folks like marjorie taylor greene. can you get it done? what's the point? >> we have to get it done. the consequences of not passing

a federal budget and putting into place another government shutdown could have catastrophic impacts for the u.s. government, and for the american people. in new mexico, there are over 14,000 active duty military and tens of thousands of federal employees. if we have a government shutdown, that means that we are going to impact the ability of people to pay the bills, to put food on the table, and i think that the continued political rhetoric of the right, attacking the american people, trying to shut down the government, it really misunderstands where the american people are at. where they want, which is for us to actually serve them and do their jobs. and you can make sure that we keep our government functional and accountable to the people of this country. i think that we are going to come back into the capital on tuesday, where we will see what the gop has in store. i am not feeling particularly confident about their ability to get their own act together,

j.p. morgan wealth management. >> welcome back to the breaking news out of morocco. now at least 1300 dead and 1800 injured. rescue teams continuing today through the rubble in search of survivors after the 6.8 magnitude earthquake devastated several villages in the high -- about 50 miles from a city of marrakech. i want to bring in someone who's following this for us. walk us through the latest on the recovery efforts there. >> yes, as you mentioned, that death toll just in the past several hours, rising to 1300. we're talking about more than 1800 people injured, more than half of those injuries are critical. it's a very real concern that the death toll is going to continue to rise. as you mentioned, rescue efforts on the ground are ongoing, trying to get folks into some of those more remote

villages where they really saw the impact of this and tried to rescue anyone that might still be alive and trapped under that rubble. we are also getting a more clear picture of how this all unfolded. there are videos emerging where you just see people running out of restaurants, running out of buildings and running through the streets as there are buildings collapsing all around them. you actually have the sound with one of the survivors, and i want to play a little bit of that. let's listen. >> we're on an intrepid tour, just went to bed, we did not go to bed. the room started shaking, and the room started shaking. there's no other way. going backwards, forwards, everything started moving, pictures started moving. we just grabbed some clause. we raced out, one of the other people on the tour came running, screaming to tell us --

all of our group just came. we came out here and yes, we just hung around with everyone, with the locals. >> we are hearing many reports like that of people sleeping in the streets overnight, too scared to go back into buildings as they're waiting for potential aftershocks and things like that. of course, real concern there in the atlas mountains, where a lot of this bill villages are. these buildings were made from adobe and reinforced concrete. they are not built to withstand this kind of shaking. we are hearing reports from those mountainous areas, people just trying to remove the rubble with their hands, and the immediate aftermath of this. one witness described saying that it was like doomsday. we know the president and secretary of state are working to have the safety of americans there, make sure they're accounted for, and also offering support to the moroccan people as the next couple of days are getting that

of bribery, obstruction of justice, and violations of public trust. this week included a unemotional witness testimony by starch texas republicans dealing paxton's alleged misdeeds and transgressions. >> i was deeply concerned that the name and authority, and power of our office had been, in my view, hijacked to serve the interest of individuals against the interest of broader public. >> i really wanted him to come clean. i even said, are you under into influence, he said no. he said no. >> mr. paxton should be removed from office because he failed to protect the state, and instead used the power of his elected office for his own benefits. >> ken paxton has pled not guilty, described his impeachment as a, quote, politically motivated sham. he has consistently denied wrongdoing. joining us now to talk more about this, jay david goodman,

the new york times bureau chief who has been covering this trial very closely. david, thank you for joining us on this. this is republicans going after their very own. the state attorney general -- ken paxton. how is it looking for him so far as this week has played out? >> that's right. at the end of the, day it's a political trial. this is a -- not before a jury that is common to any other courtroom, espy for 31 senators. 19 republicans, 12 democrats. that is the audience that these lawyers -- really, some of the most high powered lawyer and all of texas are doing this case for. the first four days of the trial, i think that there was some emotional testimony, some also points scored on both sides. it really ended on friday with a real successful trump punch on the part of the prosecutors. they got their top law

enforcement witnesses with david maxwell, really running the law enforcement arm of the attorney generals office on the stand, and testimony that day. he essentially said that he felt like what ken paxton was asking him to do was going to get pen ken paxton indicted. it is powerful testimony, there was not much response on the defense side there was able to undercut this very frank and forthright and experienced testimony. it's a person that had been a law enforcement officer since -- and so he is somebody that i think that they prepared a lot of credibility in the room, the senate chamber, and ended on a high note for the prosecution. >> we played with some testimony coming to you here, but paxton himself, i am not expected to testify on his behalf, on his own behalf. does that surprise you? >> that is something that the defense attorneys wanted to make sure that they had the option. it is early on in the whole process, whether he could

become held to come and testify. the court ruled -- and what's interesting about the whole process, it resembles that, trying to follow the same rules. this is a procedure entirely set by the senate. it is presided over by lieutenant governor that runs the senate. he decided early on that ken paxton did not need to take the stand. it was a big victory for paxton's side. they're having the attorney general after explaining why it is that he did all of these various things that this process is talking about for the one austin real estate developer named nate paul. why was that he wanted to get his office involved in the federal investigation. why was that he wanted to get the documents to nate paul. why wasn't that he wanted the particular opinion that seem to to benefit him? if you get out there and try to explain, that you would have a hard time doing that and convince senators there. >> there is also this part, which i want to read from your piece. among the state senators that mostly in silence was mr. paxton's wife and mr. paxton.

according to the rules, she would be counted as president for the purpose of the two thirds majority needed. firing, that being any deliberations, she cannot vote. she has to sit there and listen through all of this. some of which also contains allegations of having an extramarital affair and actions that the attorney general engaged in that benefited the woman that he was engaging in this affair with. talk us through that. >> it has been observed that can paxson appeared the first day of the trial and sat through the morning proceedings. and then has not been there since. at the same time, his wife was barred from taking part in any deliberations. she has to sit there every day and listen to every bit of testimony. i think it's something that has not been lost on observers. and hasn't been lost on the other senators. she's actually quite like the senator in the body. and so i think that it can be easy for her. one interesting thing to note, even though that she cannot
