this is likely to continue as they move in and we are going to see an actual ground incursion. that is something we have been hearing from officials in washington and elsewhere, saying this is not the, and this is probably the first phase of a real comprehensive effort to put hamas on it he's in the gaza strip. i want to talk a bit yasmin about what i have seen here in lebanon, we are hearing mostly about hezbollah, which is distinct from hamas. very distinct in the sense it doesn't on political and militant group that is on israel's borders they have frequently over the past -- sustained bloody campaigns against israel. when this law started on saturday morning, everybody was looking at what was going on and doesn't israel. a lot of focus was here in lebanon, and hezbollah. this is hezbollah like hamas is iranian-backed, and has the capability to strike against

8:10 pm
americans, but the kidnappings. if we start to see that americans are among the many people believed -- we don't have exact figures for kidnapped or taken from israel and dragged into the gaza strip, that could bring the united states into this conflict in a way that a lot of people probably would not like to see. yasmin? >> yes, i think a lot of people are worried about that right about now. thank you. we have some new reporting tonight, nbc news is reporting the unprecedented scale and these guerrilla tactics that are employed by her mastering said it is attack on israel, indicate that iran likely played a influential role in this assault according to former u.s. intelligence and litary officers. now this is happening as u.s. ficials are pushing back on that reporting, with the wall street journal, that goes a st further saying quote this, -- an attack on israel over several weeks. joining us now is a member of
8:11 pm
the -- this trial take-able hours, ago and i want you to walk us through some of the reporting we are hearing, some of the indications which hamas launched this attack, would indicate it was backed by possibly as the wall street journal's reporting iran. >> that is right. so maybe we should start with what we saw during the assault. what we saw during this attack. you had a very sophisticated attack in some ways, there are many aspects to it, there are fast speed boats which is a known iranian -- in the gulf of iran, often using speedboats to swarm around large naval ships, u.s. naval ships. we also saw them hitting multiple points along that southern border with gaza.
8:12 pm
and hitting many many places at different times. you saw that footage, even in the air, there was a sophistication to it. there was all these guerrilla tactics. there was this hostage taking we have been hearing about. small hostage taking cells that were taking to israel, and all of this according to some former diligence officials who spoke to us, they were saying in really is very familiar. the colonial playbook one-on-one. now having said that, we don't know precisely what iran's role was. that is why you see some discussion here that you refer to. the wall street journal is saying, hamas gave them full green light, we are in on the detailed planning all the way into the timing, and the white house is saying that they can
8:13 pm
confirm that. the administration officials are not able to confirm something like that. this is an important nuance, right. was iran somehow in on it in terms of training, helping, overtime, arming hamas. or, is it some higher level where they are actually orchestrating it and ordering even? that is what we do not know. that makes a big difference obviously for really sensitive and dangerous situation. >> it certainly, doesn't certainly makes a difference as to what will come next, and how countries will respond to this considering need agreed to which iran's involvement is here. thank you for talking us through that. we appreciate it. i want to bring in my friend the host of -- to our coverage here probably last 24 hours of coverage ayman, you have been doing an excellent job. thank you for that my friend. let's pick up on something that
8:14 pm
you and i talk offline a lot about, it is not necessarily surprising this new reporting hearing about the possibility of iran making this plan of the hamas attack on israel, considering the proxy war that iran has been fighting along with hamas and hezbollah for decades and decades. i think we have to talk about what would be the objective of iran in doing this. it is often that iran is used the plight of palestinians to their own advantage. talk to us a little bit about that, and the role here. >> yes, you are absolutely right. there are a few ways to look at this, right. i think in the coming days, and weeks, the intelligence about what iran may have done in this is going to be so critical. i think it assume point right now to make sure we have the most up-to-date and accurate reporting.
8:15 pm
when that wall street journal article came out that suggested iran not just supported or financed -- gave technical know how to hamas in terms of how to carry this attack out, but actually greenlit the operation and was perhaps involved in the planning and direction of the operation, that would be a very different threshold. now it is important to emphasize that our reporting, nbc news reporting from u.s. officials i've spoken to nbc news it just so far, they have not seen evidence to corroborate that. it is important to let our viewers know about that, because it is not as iran is not involved. as you suggested iran for years has taken off this mantle of being a pro palestinian power in the region, yet obviously finances, supports, and provides technical know -- including hezbollah and southern lebanon, it includes groups in gaza like the ministry jihad and hamas, and also no rocket controls and certainly supports a lot of
8:16 pm
militias in that country, at four years were fighting the americans. and as well in places like yemen and syria. so there is no doubt that iran has taken this position of being the primary financier, supporter, logistical support or if you will for a lot of these militant groups. it would be different to see iran coordinate and direct specific attacks against israel. that is something -- in gaza and certainly elsewhere in lebanon in the territories, had not been the case before to see palestinian groups responding to direct orders from iran over what kind of operational specific tactics to be used against israel. >> so it would be a new threshold even, but take a walk with me on this path of what if. if in fact they're able to corroborate this reporting that iran was as involved as wall
8:17 pm
street journal is implying they were, what happens then? then you have a possibility of direct conflict here that could have never imagined. iran is not having any friends in the region, in fact they have more enemies than friends in the region. israel does not have that many friends in the region. they have more enemies than friends. when you think about the possible direct conflict that these nations could be facing, if in fact this reporting is corroborated, and what this war had become. >> and you certainly know as well as anyone, yasmin, iran has been subject of covert operations by american intelligence, israeli intelligence, for years. the iranians have even pointed the finger at american and israeli intelligence being behind many of the attacks that have taken place against nuclear scientists, and even more explicitly as america has admitted the killing of -- who in some ways oversaw the proxy umbrella across the region and various factions that were under militant groups
8:18 pm
that were under its control. if iran is proving to be involved in this direct operation, then the question really shifts to what is -- the united states prepared to do with his allies in the region. united states has countries like saudi arabia, united emirates, sometimes a lot of capabilities across the region. with a united states go into or would israel carry out direct overt military operations against iran in response to this attack? that is not a question i can certainly answer. it is certainly a question i'm sure lot of security analyst would be looking at, in whether or not israel would be able to carry out a kind of attack. fundamentally the question would be, what kind of back are you going to carry out? and what is the objective of that attack? it is simply to send a message to run, or would it be something more significant, more strategic for israel and the united states to try and create against iranian regime. >> i think in hearing this reporting as, well a lot of folks are actually asking what was the ultimate objective of

briefing tonight that four americans were killed as a result of hamas's attack on israel. and they were also told to expect that number to rise, according to three sources familiar with the briefing. i want to bring in now congressman adam smith, democrat of washington state and members of the armed services committee, to talk more about this. congressman, thanks for staying up late for us, sir, appreciate it. i know that you are not on this, call your staff, was and you are briefed by it. what can you tell us about what more you have learned? >> first of all, the call wasn't classified, so there's a lot of information that the administration was holding back. obviously, they want to be very careful about releasing the names of americans who might be held hostage and giving any information out on that. front was mostly sort of a policy, before the u.s. is doing to respond. and you have three basic goals, one, support israel anyway we can. second, contain the conflict as best as we can, working with regional allies is the big part
8:46 pm
of that. and then third, you know, protecting american lives in the region, making sure there is a force posture in the region, and working with our allies to make sure that everyone in the area is protected going forward. >> by containing the conflict, congressman, are you worried it could feasibly escalate things there as well? i know the president told prime minister netanyahu military assistance, more military assistance, is, quote unquote, on the way. we know the uss gerald r ford carrier strike group is headed to the eastern mediterranean as well. with that is an aircraft carrier. are you worried that could also cause escalation, escalation in the region versus just containing? >> no, the main escalation concern is hezbollah to the north. that's been the big focused, making sure that hezbollah does not get involved in that conflict. we've been working with people in lebanon on that part of the
8:47 pm
focus. that's where the conflict could escalate. we're still also, again, haven't had a classified brecheen, trying to figure out exactly what iran's role in this. clearly iran is the number one backer of both hezbollah and hamas, and the weapons, and the rockets that were used in this attack almost undoubtedly came from iran. what is their role beyond that? what are their plans going forward? that's where the escalation could happen, is if iran and hezbollah decide to get more involved in the conflict. and we hope to have our presence and our cooperation with israel deter either one of those groups from getting more involved. >> what are you most worried about with that possibility in mind when we talk about iran? because i know you're referring to this new wall street journal reporting, and i think the nuance of this reporting is important, right, because we know iran has been fighting its proxy wars via hamas and hezbollah for very long time.
8:48 pm
it is the degree to which they may have been involved here which is more problematic than anything, considering this reporting that we have not confirmed here, and nbc news. but if in fact it is confirmed that iran is involved in the degree to which this wall street journal reporting is saying, what could a conflict look like with iran, would that mean conflict between israel and iran directly, and then subsequently, as you pointed, israel's strongest ally, the united states? >> look, two about this, first of all, the timing almost certainly has to do about iran being worried about the glowing closeness between israel and arab states. you know, there is a ongoing effort right now to get a peace deal between israel and saudi arabia. we already have seen expansion of the abraham accords to a number of different countries. i think clearly iran had an
8:49 pm
interest in disrupting that. now that the reports that we've gotten from saudi arabia, from the uae and others, is that they're not backing off of their efforts to get to peace agreements and hold on to those peace agreements with israel. but iran trying to blow that apart is one big concern. and the second is, again, hezbollah, what might they do coming down from the north from there stronghold in lebanon, and also syria? that's where this could expand. again, the early reports are that all of those allies are not backing off. they have a desire to get -- or the concerns about iran, but clearly, and i haven't gotten a classified briefing this yet, so i can't say for sure, but i think it is quite reasonable to assume that iran wanted to upset that process. and that was a big part of why this attack happened. >> would it be problematic
8:50 pm
though, congressman, if in fact this reporting is accurate, that both u.s. intelligence and israeli intelligence would not have picked up on iran's direct involvement on the planet one tack of this magnitude? >> absolutely, i mean, that's very troubling. you know, look, one aspect of this that hasn't been talked about, our focus is on protecting israel, dealing with the attack that they faced, what might come for it. but look, we've been working with israel for a long time on netanyahu's obsession with expanding into the west bank. and that has unnecessarily, i believe, distracted israel from where the real threat is, hezbollah and hamas. we're gonna have some detailed conversations about that going forward, to try to make sure israel is in the best possible position to defend itself. >> congressman, thank you, sir, appreciate it. after the break everybody, how people across our country are reacting to scenes of violence unfold. we'll be right back.
