look, it's a big college town. it's a big college town that will be important to whoever is going to win particularly joe bide sxeb it's an important effort to build on what this administration has already done. it gives the young voters that the campaign is trying to reach a goal because this rule's not
9:51 am
going to be finalized until next summer, and if the presidency changes hands the rule is likely to die. so i think the president will put this directly in front of young voters as a way of getting them energized and solving a big policy problem that the campaign and administration have been trying toem tackle for more tha four years. >> and donald trump is dodging a national abortion ban now by saying that states should decide the issue. he's been really all over the lot on this issue. and msnbc is getting a look at -- a first look at a new biden campaign ad. here it is. >> this is one of our little boxes. this is just filled with some of the things that we had started gathering for her while i was pregnant. >> yep. >> there's her little baby book. this is the outfit she was going
9:52 am
to maybe wear home from the hospital. all of these. this is the blanket that she was in. and these are her little footprints. >> it's okay. >> i mean, that's powerful and emotional. but tim, you also have mike pence from the other point of view tweeting that trump's retreat today is a slap in the face to abortion opponents. trump in his truth social also made a point that he's concerned about the politics of abortion, not, you know, the morality of
9:53 am
the issue k but how it's playin politically and how it's bad for his campaign. >> yeah, well, trump doesn't care about anybody w but himsel. so whether you're a genuine pro lifer like mike pence or whether you're genuinely concerned about the rights of women being infringed upon you're going to be on opposite sides of donald trump because he's not genuinely concerned about anything. i'm skeptical that mike pence, that there's going to be a ton of votersng who follow mike pence's point of view. maybe some on the margins. i think a lot of those voters are already made a deal with the devil, so to speak, with trump, got what theype wanted as far a roe v. wade being overturned, and a lot of those folks have become very defensive and alignedy with donald trump speaking of evangelical voters overli the past eight years. so i'm happy to see mike pence speaking up for his convictions. i don't know how many voters thatrs reflects. the biden ad on the other hand t think is pretty strong. and i like that it features a woman, obviously very powerful and moving ad but features a
9:54 am
woman that wanted to have a kid. and that pushes back against this notion that you get from some that trump tried to put forth, that it's the democrats that are real extremists and they want to do post-birth abortion and all this kind of nonsense. they're featuring o ads for wom that are really suffering, wanted r to have babies, and ar unable to have medical procedures because of laws being passed in red states. i think that's a powerful place for the biden campaign to be to reach gettable voters on this issue. >> and peter, let's talk about the republican fund-raiser at mar-a-lago. they raised $50 million in theit fund-raiser. that's just about doubling the 25 million that the biden campaign raiseddo at radio city with two former presidents.me but still biden has a big money, cash on hand advantage over donald trump's campaign. mr. trump teased extending his signature tax cuts when meeting with those wealthy donors at s mar-a-lago. and the "new york times," your w paper, is reporting he again defended wanting immigrants from, quote, nice countries like
9:55 am
denmark and switzerland. i think he's talking about white people. what else are you reporting out of that fund-raiser? >> yeah, that's right.ha first of all, it was an important moment for trump because he is so far behind on the money that he needed to demonstrate that he in fact still can compete. because one thing that biden has, his numbers obviously have been tough, they're in a very competitive state in a lot of these key battlegrounds. but the one thing the biden people have had all along is an advantage in money. they said look, we haven't begun to spend it. once we begin spending on ads like the one you just showed, that will remind voters of why they don't like trump and they're going to come back to bide erngs the ones who have been disaffected with him. well, trump is trying to say i'm not going toto give up on the money thing and coming back with a $50 million fund-raiser right after that three-president fund-raiser is pretty important. but you're right, he's spending so much money on so many different things including his legal bills that theso biden people are likely to have a pretty significant advantage going into the fall. the other thing as youel mentiod isr at this fund-raiser of coue you hear donald trump unvarnished.
9:56 am
not that he's ever all that varnished to begin with. but he's very clear when he says things like i don't want to have immigrants from places like yes, ma'amen and mexico but i'd rather have them from places like denmark and switzerland. everyone knows what he's talking about. it's not a very subtle formula there. he did that when he was president. he said that in private when he was president. he said why can't we have more immigrants fromwh norway and le from africa for instance. that was a formulation he used while he was president. this is in keeping with his immigration stance from the beginning. it's notim that he's against immigration. his own wife is an immigration. his own wife's mother came, we saw on documents released the other day, through chain migration, a process that he himself criticizes. he's against immigration of people who are not from nice countries likero denmark and switzerland. >> thanks so much to robert gibbs, tim miller, peter baker wrapping it all up. thanks for being with us. and remember, katy tur coming up at 2:00 of course with the coverage of the eclipse. and chris jansing reports starts
