united states is going to speak there. and it shows how completely entrenched the party is in only appealing to the base. there may be a way to win an election like that these days, i don't know. but it feels like you are writing off a huge number of people who don't like joe biden. but when you remind them of this crazy talk, it makes it uncomfortable for a lot of people to come to donald trump side. >> i went to pick up on that. do those words and the call for action, does it scare you or do you see it as an opportunity for democrats to use this against the former president, or both? >> i would say both because i see it as an opportunity for democrats to remind america just how scary it would be for this party, this president, and that platform to take root once again in the white house. look. i'm not at all surprised seeing what we are seeing and i'm certainly not surprised by saying this further entrenchment. when you have a pace that has

been told in political messages from ronald reagan to gately atwater to the bush and certainly to mr. trump that they are entitled to the privileges they have been enjoying through dominant culture, those people will see any kind of equality, any kind of justice, any kind of equity for anyone else as a direct threat. so this is why steve bannon gets on stage and says this is not a fight or even a battle. this is a war that is precisely how they are treating this and democrats should be spotlighting that at every chance they get. they are at war against everyday people who are very simply trying to keep a roof over their heads and food on their family plates and trying to make sure they can live not just in surviving ways but lead fighting lives in this country that sold us the stream. that should be the democratic message from now ad infinitum. >> there is so much unprecedented about where we are right now. here is an unprecedented question. if donald trump cannot attend

in person, what effect would that have on the convention? what while up his base even more , and what do you think it would do for people who are on the fence? >> i think the picture is an area in which this is happening. he is confined to his home. i think that alone will rile up people. it certainly, i don't think i might good to that middle to have your nominee be sentenced and not able to travel. went donald trump last week said milwaukee is a horrible city, or something to that affect, i don't think that was an accident. i think is very much aware there is either a possibility or a likelihood he will not be able to be there. it may not come to fruition but it's on his mind. i've been enough of those rooms where he is rattling around saying a bunch of nonsense, but there's usually something tied to it. something has gone into his head and he thinks that's a possibility and i think he is

trying to lay some groundwork as to why he may not be able to be there. >> does it help democrats, brittany, if trump can't attend the highest profile gop event of the presidential election cycle? can you imagine an acceptance speech from mar-a-lago? >> listen. if i'm a democratic operative i am playing video of donald trump sitting at home unable to attend his own nominating convention on constant loop. it will be on every single social media platform. it will be in every single commercial slot that i can find and afford. because i want that image out there to the american people. i want the american people to be very clear that if the supreme court and or other judicial institutions will not forbid a convicted felon from running for president, then we, the people, have to hold the

line. and to be clear, it's not just about his present circumstance. it's about all of the things that he promised to do when he gets into office because this is a person who keeps showing up in front of america as a loser. and what donald trump shows up as a loser, he vows to take vengeance on anybody who pointed and laughed at him when that happened. he has promised a revengeful cabinet. he's promised a revengeful policy platform. project 2025 is a reminder of just how vengeful not only donald trump but this entire party can be. and now is the time for democrats, and everyday people who are clued in, to remind everyone they know of that. >> britney, with printed referenced earlier, the fact that donald trump allegedly called milwaukee the host city of the rnc a horrible city, i mean, how is that going to play out? i want to say the trump campaign denies he said it and said he was saying something relative to crime, but how does that go down with wisconsin voters? >> isn't it fascinating that the so-called cover that is

operative put forth was a narrative about crime and not the actual nature of the city? that is a dog whistle for black people. milwaukee, much like baltimore, and other city that he patently insulted from the country, is a city with a large black population, a very proud black population, and he continues to go after cities and locations and regions that have black populations, black leadership. leadership of color. and these dog whistles will still continue to appeal to the base irrespective of what city he's talking about. it may have been while walking yesterday. could be my hometown of st. louis tomorrow. it could be oakland, california, the week after that . what we know to be true is that donald trump understands the dog whistles necessary for his base and so does the gop and they will keep saying those as loudly as they can no matter how they try to throw rocks and hide their hands? >> she has a point. that will appeal to his base, but does that do material damage to trump's chances in a

key swing state, which wisconsin is? >> there is no smart play here. that's why the only reason i think he would say such a thing is he's trying to lay groundwork for not showing up. wisconsin is one of the most important states he has to win. it put him in the white house eight years ago and was one of the ones that cost them four years ago. they constant problem with donald trump is that the things he shoots from the hip always undermined the politics for in some ways he actually has decent political instincts but he can't help himself by doing things like this and revealing his true character for he thinks maybe he say behind closed doors. he says all kinds of crazy stuff like this all the time. there's been comparisons to joe biden and talking about donald trump's mind going and him slipping. he's always been like

this. years ago i've been in rooms hearing him say stuff like this pick to me the bigger thing and it reminds people that is not a very stable person at a time we need strong leadership. he's not really something you can rely on. >> less than two weeks from the first debate between trump and president biden but the biden campaign plans to let trump a trumpet hope his extreme views and what you are describing, the meandering way of speaking -- they are hoping of course the trump amnesia we have talked about. can a debate do that? >> this will be a fascinating debate. you typically talk about the incumbent president not doing well on a debate because they haven't been challenged in a while and not used to having debates but the challenger usually does very well. this is a situation where both of them will face that issue. donald trump skipped all the republican primary debates and hasn't debated in years. but this is also clearly someone who is not used to being challenged. and when presumably the president pushes back on him

, seeing how he reacts to those things though she lives in a bubble or no one ever questions anything he does or says and surround himself with yes-men it will be interesting to see how he responds when he gets some digs for example when joe biden brings up that he's a convicted felon. how would you react? >> how about you, brittany? what do you expect from the debate? >> it's clear that we will see a lot of comparisons about their fitness for office, especially given both of their advanced ages. but i think it's going to be critically important for president biden to explicitly draw out the distinctions and differences between key, donald trump, and this gop party. as you said, there has been a high level of trip amnesia that we have been seeing throughout the country pico and many people are thinking, i survived him before. i can survive him again. not

be at least a couple of announcements coming from the white house on issues related to migration and immigration in this country. multiple sources tell nbc news, sources family with the white house plans around this executive action that we could see this from the president as early as tuesday. what this executive action does is protect about half 1 million undocumented immigrants living in the u.s. currently from being deported, in particular were talking about the spouses of u.s. citizens, who have been in this country for at least 10 years. this would protect them from being deported and allow them to work in this country, as well. we knew a week or so ago when president biden announced this initiative around restricting or tightening restrictions on asylum applications in this country for people who cross the southern border illegally that there was going to be more to come. the president suggested there would be additional announcements, additional executive actions around these issues. what we expect to happen on tuesday would be the second

thing from this administration. at the same time the president made clear the immigration system is broken. the migration problem at the southern border is a crisis and that congress ultimately has the power to fix both issues and he has presented several plans over the course of his administration as options for congress to consider and to negotiate and come back with something that could pass that he could sign. >> give me a peek at tonight's big hollywood fundraiser? that will be with former president obama but do you know some of the other famous names expecting to make an appearance? >> reporter:. we note that george clooney and julia roberts are hosting the big event happening in downtown l.a. tonight jimmy kimmel, the late- night talkshow host will conduct the q&a with president biden and former president obama. this is an opportunity for the campaign to raise a ton of money. $28 million according to the campaign official i spoke to so far but anticipate that number could grow. this is money that

will go into the campaign coffers, which we know are already really robust that the biden campaign have been able fairly early on this year to raise more money than the trump campaign and began to roll out that advertising blitz we've seen in many battleground states around the country. they will continue to do that with money they generate from this event, as well as hiring more staffers and opening our campaign offices around the country. and of course we're looking to see what other celebrity show up at the event. obviously, these are people who have a lot of influence in the circles in which they run and with their fans. people on the instagram pages and following everything they have to say. it will be interesting to see how they take tonight's messaging and roll that out to the fans. >> aaron gilchrist, thank you. on the heels of that we bring in dominic patton, executive editor for deadline hollywood. and your new article you highlighted that massive $28 million hall for tonight's fundraising. it's already been brought in. how big a deal is tonight event

for the biden campaign and how might it compared to the president's last star-studded fundraiser next to where we are here in new york city? >> the radio city music hall event, by the way, alex, big fan of yours too. the radio city music hall event where we had president joe biden, president obama and president clinton on race $26 million. this is already about that and they anticipate there will be more here. this is a very big deal for the president's campaign because this is indication of fundraising capacities and an indication of the enthusiasm a lot of discussion about where the people and if there jazzed up about that trump and biden reader. it looks like that's starting to change. it looks like people are starting to lock in on this campaign and with the likes of president obama, playing the role that president clinton played for him in 2012,

starting to see the big guns come out. >> we heard aaron talk about those expected to attend. the big celebrities. george clooney and julia roberts will co-host. president obama. who else may we see? weatherby a lot of star-studded celebrities in the audience, as well? >> i think so. as you had on their display there is sheryl lee ralph from abbott elementary, or should i say dr. cheryl ralph jason bateman at the radio city music hall event. there are a number of people who will be there from behind the camera in hollywood specifically jeffrey katzenberg, the former head of dreamworks and one of the chief individuals in the presidential re-election campaign. he has been very close to president obama and president biden. he's putting a lot of stock in getting these bombs in seats, as they say. and in the peacock theater, which fits over 7000 people, those seats are full. a couple days ago it looked like there were a few left but they are now sold out this will be a jam-packed house in the

center of downtown los angeles. >> heard you are going. what are you wearing? i'm kidding. but you are going? >> i will probably wear this jacket. yes. >> you look great let's talk about the new movie, the apprentice drama depiction of donald trump's early years as a new york real estate mogul and it's getting good reviews come up but it does not always portray donald trump in a flattering light and the trump campaign threatened to sue the filmmakers. any updates on where the apprentice stands today and potential legal action? >> well, as is so often with donald trump and the trump campaign, they huff and puff but don't blow the house down. this is a threat. the threat was given a may 27th deadline and that has come and gone but the film, which debuted and has received tremendous reviews. sebastian stan playing a young donald trump. jeremy strong playing roy cohen. this is a depiction of the former president that shows where that attack, deny

strategy comes from. but it's been picked up in canada and japan and the uk and france and germany. nobody yet acted up in america. some people postulate, the new york times that an update, that it's because people are afraid of the trump blowback. i think they are afraid of trump fatigue. i think once you see what the numbers look like from this debate at the end of the month, you're going to see people on netflix and maybe peacock, owned by nbc and comcast, they may start looking at this and realizing if we can get eyeballs, we will put this on experiment i will defer to you and you will know more about hollywood than i would but when i heard this was being threatened that i might not be able to see it, if i wanted to, it made me want to see it all the more. do you think there's an element of that? it could help with pleasant -- publicity and of hollywood pitches at the right way, it could bring in the eyeballs? >> i think you are totally right. if you see a poster on the building that says the

new concerns over an apparent rise in politically motivated attacks on law enforcement officers following the thursday arrest of a texas man who allegedly threatened an fbi agent involved with the hunter biden investigation. the suspect reportedly left messages on the agent's government-issued phone threatening to kidnap and kill him and accused him of covering up material on hunter biden's laptop and trying to steal the election for joe biden. the incident coming amid mounting fears over right-wing pledges to retaliate against democrats and the u.s. judicial system following donald trump's criminal conviction in new york. joining me now as former fbi special agent and msnbc national security analyst clint watts. what is your reaction to this arrest? knowing this agent was named in public reports how concerned are you that more law enforcement personnel will be targeted by individuals out to

avenge the baseless, conspiratorial claims of the maga movement? >> alex, it's something we definitely saw three or four years ago quite consistently and that was kind of a lull. i have a friend who was on an affidavit doing his job, signed it and has been targeted ever since. his family has been harassed and he has been pursued. and in this case it's very similar. often times very confused with a lot of conspiracy you might find on social media and the internet but just doesn't play out. we just saw the end of the hunter biden trial this week so also is odd why this would surface now. the biggest part of this is what is called mediated terrorists but camara name is demonized and used in public and transmitted to large audiences, the more likely you will get this terrorism that was show up.

what is strange about this is is targeted through law enforcement officers who can do something about it. it's really a weird way to go about threatening an fbi agent and not expect retaliation or expect an investigation for that retaliation. i expect more of it. i think it's sad but at the same time, the fbi knows how to handle this. >> let's talk about what's happening now with the was keeping a close watch on a fleet of russian warships that have docked off the coast of cuba which will soon carry out military exercises. moscow sending these vessels less than two weeks after the biden administration authorized ukraine to use u.s.-provided weapons against military targets inside russia. are these ships a genuine threat to the u.s. or are they just a display of force? >> i think it's mostly a show of force. the russian navy has had lots of struggles in the black sea that they would legitimately risk or try to provoke. the u.s. navy or any international navy, that's not reasonable.

they would be met with extreme force. i think what they are trying to do is send a signal that they are present and they can project some sort of force, and it's at a time where you look at the negotiations going on with russia and ukraine where there is talk about trying to come to a peace deal pick what the russians are trying to do is signal strength in other directions. i don't see this as a legitimate threat in any way and i think the u.s. navy could handle it if there was any threat that was out there. of >> this is interesting because in a few public statements, the pentagon said the exercise do not pose a threat to the u.s. and they're being monitored. on thursday, the u.s. sent a navy summary to guantanamo bay. why has the biden administration office public response been so tightlipped. if these ships pose no threat wasn't a nuclear powered sub there? is it something like, we see your worships and i will send this nuclear powered sub? >> i think it is just matching
