and we'll have more on that in a moment. as the season heats up, they are hitting the trail in pennsylvania this afternoon. vice president harris will speak in philadelphia in the next 2 1/2 hours or so well donald trump will speak in butler. here is a live look at the city of milwaukee which officials are prepping for the republican national convention and trump is teasing his pick for the vice presidential running mate saying it is down to the north dakota governor and senators marco rubio, jd vance and tim scott. we do have some new numbers. 24 million people watched the post natal press conference thursday. with the wind at his back he shifted his focus to trump at the friday campaign stop in detroit. >> he has filed bankruptcy six

and elsewhere and win the november election. and let me say this as emphatically as i can, for the sake of our kids and future generation, he must win. this is the message he is trying to get out to as many democratic lawmakers as he can as he tries to shore up support and reverse the damage done from the june 27 debate performance and we know in the past two days he has been working the phones and this is happening today as he tries to talk to different groups and caucuses in congress and reassure them he is able to stay in this race. all of this is coming as we see this shift from the president about how he is talking about his embattled candidacy. he was at a rally in battleground, michigan, where we heard him address the press coverage of that core debate performance as well as some of the flubs he made in recent days and we addressed on and you can hear some of that speech from last nights rally. >> they have been hammering me because i sometimes confuse

names like charley instead of bill, but guess what ? donald trump has gotten a free pass. the people would rather talk about how a mix of names. i guess they don't remember that trump called nikki haley nancy pelosi. >> reporter: as you heard the president seizing on the opportunity to slam his predecessor, he at one point in the rally listed the reasons he said that trump is unfit to serve another term in the presidency. notably, he not only double down on his about his stay in the race but he offered a preview on what he was doing his first 100 days in office if he does win another term. all of this comes as so many democrats are privately weighing whether to publicly call on him to step aside and they will watch his every move and word closely over the coming days. right now it looks like he is in front and inform. let's go to jake in pennsylvania where trump is set

to speak in about four hours. the former president is upping the suspense on who his pick for vice president will be in do you hear about timing of that announcement or any chance it will be today? >> that truly is the question of the weekend month so far. we are another day ended this month long process of ultimately who the president will select as his vice president leading up to next week's republican national convention. consistently republican senior advisors to trump, these top aides have consistently said one thing and only one person knows who that pic will be in that person is donald trump. we have tried to get some insight into the timing of when this takes place. over the past few days and in interviews they have said repeatedly that if it were up to him he wants to make the decision ultimately and

announcement during the republican national convention next weekend. that isn't unprecedented. it has not been done in modern history. there has been inconsistent messaging from this pick from the former president and months ago he said it doesn't matter ultimately or sway the election or make that much of a difference. now we see the campaign lean into teasing this and stretching out this announcement. we have seen tons of fundraising e-mails and some took place today with trump routinely polling the crowds asking who they want to see is the vp and yesterday trump said he would like to see an apprentice style type of vp announcement to up the production value and up the ante. he hasn't done it like this before and we will listen to a little of this from yesterday that from the sound of it he may not even have his mind made up of who they will be. listen. >> i do have some really good candidates. and i may be leaning one way

and it changes sometimes and all of the sudden you see something you like or don't like and you lean a little bit differently. we have some -- we have a very good bench. >> reporter: it is very likely that next week amid the chaos of a national convention and speeches from a lot of different leaders. we could have a vice presidential announcement if not today. >> unprecedented is the way he rolls so we will see. let's go to jillian in pittsburgh. what are voters saying today and that crucial swing state about their options in the race?'s >> reporter: i have been speaking here with voters all weekend long. many of them are democrats. what i have learned is two

things can be true. some of these voters could have concerns about president biden's longevity and ability to do this job for another four years, but many of them say they plan to turn out for them this fall but a lot of them acknowledge the reality of this situation and this election cycle and it is a two-man race and we are a few months away from the election. they believe president biden when he says he will remain the democratic candidate or nominee, but some of them say what is driving them to vote is more of a concern about the opposition and concern about former president trump. they don't want to see him back in office driving them to the polls in november. here is more of my conversation with these voters this morning. >> i feel like we have made a big fuss over president biden's age. he is very old. the job requirement isn't age. the job requirement isn't outstanding youthful vigor. the job requirement is being true to the office.

>> i don't have his concern about his ability to run again. i do have concerns about his long jevity in office and his energy level, his health. >> i think biden is too old and i don't like trump and if a third person who came in was strong, he would win. >> reporter: in terms of electability, some voters say they are concerned that some of their fellow democrats unenthusiastic about biden and unenthusiastic about this election cycle may not turn out on election day. they worry that that could cost the democrats the race in a battleground state like pennsylvania which president biden narrowly won in 2020. so every vote counts. >> absolutely is turnout critical. and also you interviewed around the gamut. thank you. next the progressive caucus

after a rousing rally in michigan yesterday, today's focus for president biden is to get democratic lawmakers to rally behind him as well. this afternoon he has virtual meetings with the new democrat moderate coalition as well as the progressive caucus as positions grow as to whether he should state in the race. >> we are at a watershed moment where president biden can seal his place in history and put a capstone on an incredible career and secure his legacy by transferring the baton. >> i don't have a view that joe biden is the only person that can defeat donald trump. i don't think it is obvious and ultimately it is biden's decision. >> joining me now is a member of the progressive caucus.

welcome back to the broadcast. let's get into this because progressives have largely continue to support biden's run, but there have been some ideological divisions regarding his approach particularly to the war in gaza and bernie sanders said those are not enough for him to break or divide him but is there something you need to hear from the president that he is equipped to beat donald trump and how do you expect this meeting to go? >> joe biden doesn't have to tell me anything else other than what he has already done for working families and what he has done to really address the cost of living for americans. this is the same president who basically has forgiven close to $170 billion in student loan debt or a president who lowered

the cost of inhalers and insulin and a president who proposes plans to reduce maternal mortality and who will make sure that young children are continually enrolled in school even if parental situations change. this is a present historic fighting for climate change and who has stood up for women's rights and lgbtq+ rights and gun reform. these are platforms of progressives. joe biden has been strong when it comes to our platform. he is really the best one who can defeat narcissist donald trump. >> okay. then what is the problem? >> i know. we are running out of depends and rally around an incredible record. and all of the caucus meetings i have been in, every colleague has said that joe biden has been a historic president and the most consequential president, a record that is bar none to everyone else. we need to talk about those

things. i was in the district yesterday talking to voters and they aren't interested in his age but interested in his project 2025. they are interested in republicans that are rallying behind and adjudicated rape suspect and then other things. we are at a moment in time where it is the last free and fair election that americans participate in. we have a president and vice president who are up to the job who want to complete it. >> as you know, speaker jeffries met with the president thursday night. in a letter to colleagues he wrote, he directly expressed to the president the full insight of heartfelt perspectives and conclusions about the path forward that the caucus has

shared in a recent time together. what conclusions could he have shared on behalf of the entire caucus from these current divisions around biden's candidacy? >> the democratic party is diverse and i think people are settling into what is in front of us in less than 100 days. leader jeffries delivered the news on behalf of the caucus. he probably said that folks are concerned that we had front minors, freshmen, moderates and folks in purple seats who want to win because we want to win the majority so he could become speaker jeffries. the president is reaching out to the caucuses. i think it is also why he continues to have these town halls and talking directly to voters so they could see who he is and hear his platform for 2024 and they can understand the clear contrast between he

and donald trump. >> that litany of domestic issues and successes you rattled off is a long list. you are a member of the foreign affairs committee. how to the president do thursday discussing global affairs during that press conference? did he do well enough to convince doubters he is up to the job for another four years? >> i think he was very strong and talking to the international community. just before that press conference i was meeting with a dozen ambassadors from a number of countries and i was in brazil talking to parliamentarians from 20 countries and participating in these events and these folk's are scared of trump 2.0. what he said is joe biden said i am committing us to nato and also the other partnerships and alliances around the globe and we do have real issues with climate change and migration and displacement and we have

real issues with criminal organizations. it is about international cooperation and international collaboration getting more and more complicated each time. what we know is that donald trump is about isolation. these are countries that felt that and they feel increasing pressure from russia and china working to destabilize democracies around the world and then propping up rogue regimes. we can't afford that. that kind of destabilization internationally impacts us domestically. joe biden, somebody who chaired the committee sees and understands that and knows the dangers ahead. i think he was communicating to the international community. >> congressman clyburn said on the today show that he is all in and writing with biden.

listen. >> should the conversation about the president getting out of this race, should it continue?'s >> it shouldn't. the conversation should focus on the record of this administration, the alternative to his election, and let joe biden continue to make his decisions. he has earned that right. i will give him that much respect. if he decides to change his mind later on, then we respond to that. we have until 19 august to open our convention. >> the congressional black caucus has been unified standing behind biden. but nbc reports they do see some cracks. how influential is his voice? do you see black caucus colleagues in competitive races reconsidering their support as this controversy drags on? >> everybody in the caucus listens to jim clyburn.

he is a psion when it comes to history and politics. the black caucus is solidly behind joe biden we know that if he is and reelected president, we could be put back on plantations and if you look at project 2025, all of those things will devastate the african american community. we do see that. again, there are folks who are front minors in districts where they have to -- the margin is slower but they are still writing with biden because they know what is at stake with medicare and medicaid being cut, school lunches cut and talking about usda and not having to regulate what's in our food. we talk about cutting access to education and getting rid of the education department. getting rid of civil servants and replacing them with political appointees and these will impact americans and impact black americans.

instagram and i will read what he wrote. he posted a photo of himself in the courtroom writing, "there are too many people who have supported me to think just now. to all of you, you will never know how much i appreciate your kindness toward my family." during that dismissal, we saw him turn around and hug his wife and members of his legal team. hours later they were seen at a hotel bar according to video together and this is the end of the road for him because the judge dismissed the case with prejudice which means that charges can't be refiled. yesterday's dismissal wasn't the only twist. the co-prosecutor who signed on to this case three months ago quit mid-hearing. i did ask her last night what led to that decision. she tells me that once she learned about the suppressed evidence, she told the lead prosecutor that they had to drop the charges and she said when carrie morrissey refused, she knew that ethically she couldn't stay on this case and listen to why it was so important for her to quit. >> prosecutors are held to the highest ethical standards of

any attorney. when a prosecutor doesn't turn over evidence, there have to be remedies. the prosecutor needs to recognize, well, if it was inadvertent as they said or not inadvertent, the right decision would've been to dismiss this case. i think you saw this approach and i asked the court to allow me to withdraw. >> we reached out for a comment and we have yet to hear back. >> and then integrity being displayed by the prosecutor and the big story. a bit of good news for people in texas suffering through the extreme heat with no power. centerpoint energy said it expects to restore power to 85% of impacted customers by the end of the weekend and right

now 680,000 remain without power since hurricane beryl came through monday. 74 million people across the country are dealing with dangerous heat. in the west it is art he claimed about two dozen lives. this heat wave is making its way to the northeast next week with cities like to more and dc seeing temperatures of up to 100 degrees. we are in houston and as we know just because it says something on the temperature gauge, the feels like it could be worse. they are roasting in texas but apparently not the only ones? >> reporter: we are looking at some 74 million people across the country who are under a heat alert. it is being felt in houston because of the hundreds of thousands of people without power. i do want to show you something of what is going on to help folks. you did see here people preparing meals and you do have a long line of cars waiting to

receive these meals. this is one of the neighborhoods that has been without power for several days, six days, actually. they distributed about 5000 meals here for the past three days to keep this community fed and you can see they have the grills here ready to keep putting out the food and they are giving folks non- perishables and water, ice. so they can keep going. i have been speaking to the people lining up for this food. for some people it is a dire situation. they have thrown away hundreds of dollars of food and they don't have money to keep gas in the car or food on the table. so they are waiting for their power to be restored. i will play a conversation to an elderly couple taking care of their three grandchildren. >> for the past few days a lot of the gas stations were closed and long lines. we have to do we have to do to

there remains a split among democrats on whether joe biden should stay in the race or step aside. but today some members of congress say now is the time to coalesce around president biden. julie, welcome and what you hear about efforts to bring democrats together? >> there is an effort to do that. the problem is that you still have democrats here in this building and they still believe that president biden should exit the race despite his press

conference and this is after the nato leaders left washington dc and despite the president being on the campaign trail trying to rally voters and making sure that he is the strongest candidate to go up against president trump. you do have on your screen at least 19 democrats publicly calling on him to exit the race and at least two more who privately have said so. the reporting has indicated that. you have them saying enough is enough and biden is vowing to stay in the race and giving no indications he will exit the race and this fighting especially so publicly at a time when democrats are flipping control of the house and a time when they retain control of the senate and all three branches of government, at least the house and senate and white house up for grabs and two of the three rather. it is pivotal and democrats

should stick together and that is what joyce beatty, the chair of the caucus and a veteran house lawmaker had to say this morning. watch this. >> democrats or people working with democrats saying they will hold back whether it is their monetary support or coming out against them without a plan makes no sense. it also does say to me that they don't know the process of the dnc or the process of the days ahead of us that we are confronted with. we have rules and delegates. >> obviously, that is one of the things that those in biden's camp are pointing to. he has won the primaries and the delegates. he is somebody who will be named the nominee of the party should he stay in at the convention at the end of august. today he spent time sharing lawmakers on the phone of these caucuses that he is there front runner and guy and we will see if they listen to him.

>> thank you for that. we will bring in right now peter baker our political analyst and the chief white house correspondent and co- author of the divider trump in the white house 2017 through 2021. last nights rally becomes a day after the major news conference and he made some typical gas. overall proved his knowledge on foreign policy and the role of the united states in several areas. did this quiet some of the concerns in the campaign? >> a lot of people feel like it was a mixed bag and on the one hand it wasn't a disaster the way the debate was and on the other hand there were moments troubling and he didn't exactly have a forceful presentation the entire time and then middle ground where several more house democrats came out afterwards saying he should step aside but not the flood people had

anticipated and there could be an expectation that a few dozen would come out. in that sense it slow the momentum for the desire to replace him on the ticket. i don't think it actually cured the problem. if you talk to members of congress which i do and if you talk to senior democrats and even inside the biden team, there is a widespread view that he should step aside and they may be coming around or resigned to the idea that they can't convince him to leave and they would have to stick around and another incident and three more months and anything can happen. >> we will get to this most recently bernie sanders and he is throwing his weight behind joe biden and how much will that help. and there hasn't always been the most supportive part.

and the liberal base suspicious of him and gaza an example and not really part of their view of the world and among younger voters who like him but voters suspicious or skeptical or hostile to the war that could make a difference. you do have this back and forth with george clooney coming out against him one day and bernie sanders the next day and certainly not what he wanted to be doing headed in july and they are not unified right now. >> sticking with your paper, your colleagues on the editorial board of the new york times have publicly declared donald trump unfit to lead and then on thursday they called on americans to use their power to vote against him regardless of who is on the ballot and i will remind you right now that you are not part of the editorial board. do you have any insight why

they decided to issue this morning now? could they have felt pressured to do that after calling on president biden to leave the race two weeks ago? >> i have now seen -- nothing to do with the editorial board and we don't talk in a regular basis and they don't consult with us with what they do and we don't consult with them about what we do and i heard a member of rr -- our editorial board this was in the works and it wasn't a reaction to the debate or a reaction to their decision to have an editorial calling on president biden to step aside for another candidate but it is consistent with the view they have taken on president trump going back many years and they certainly made it clear that they aren't fans but they wanted to have, i imagine they are say headed into the republican convention so there is no doubt where they stand. >> to your knowledge if you heard from them that the reason

they said joe biden needs to get out of the race is because of the disastrous debate? >> they said that after the debate and they said he should step aside as did a colonist and separate from the news section but they did feel the debate was bad but it would be better to have somebody else but they reflect a lot of views of the people in the party. the times editorial page and other major papers has been a forum for this conversation going on among democrats as has msnbc and other networks. >> another question about a new article written by one of your colleagues highlighting how mar- a-lago has become a magnet for right wing extremism and i speaking with one of those co- authors next hour. but what is your biggest take away from that report? >> it is important to remember

especially in this debate that there is a lot to write about and talk about with former president trump and including flirtations and even more significant of an embrace of the far right within the party and remember he invited white supremacist to come have dinner or overtly white supremacists or anti-jewish voices at mar-a- lago a year ago i guess it was last fall. and he has moved further toward the radical fringe of the political spectrum in four years since president and he found that he likes people who support him and whether he buys into that philosophy maybe not and he has look -- look to be more willing than any other president in modern times. >> that if he reacts to something at least put on a

happened and the threats that came in they did need it. they have to pick up the tab. >> it is very pricey. let's face it. that's talk about donald trump. these would fall under core presidential duties and the judge excluded these conversations and other evidence and at the outset of the case they did that. a lot has happened. what are you learning about trump's claims and how they plan to address them? >> almost immediately and that decision about presidential immunity coming down, i think we were still reading it when we had this filing saying the case in manhattan with the hush money payments, that it should be tossed out because of this. right away, you think what where the official acts? let's be careful. judge robert said and i will read it. the president enjoys no

immunity for unofficial axa not everything the president does is official. but there was an argument, even though the behavior in the hush money case was personal, that there were ask -- type of acts done that donald trump claimed should be covered and they are taking a broad view and i would like to read a little bit from the filing that trump's lawyers made. i think it really is a catchall phrase about what they are trying to do and if they take a very broad view of it. overall the impermissible official acts include president trump in private conversations with the white house communications director and observations by the director of operations regarding the preferences and practices in the oval office. so it is another individual that testified that this was at the trial and then uses like
