you are watching special coverage of the attempted assassination of former president donald trump. we are tracking new details after this horrific incident that left the former president injured. he said a bullet pierced his ear. the fbi has identified the shooter, thomas matthew crooks. he is from bethel park, pennsylvania. he was killed on the scene by law enforcement. the rally site is still an active crime scene and police are still outside of the shooter's home. new video appearing to show the gunman just before the shooting obtained by tmz. the apparent shooter holding a gun on a roof near the rally.
2:02 am
2:04 am
>> the former president able to walk out of the rally and get in that secret service vehicle. one spectator was killed and 2 others critically injured. trump received medical care and you see him landing at newark airport a little more than two hours ago. trump gave an update on social media after he was whisked away with that blood streaming down his face. he writes: i was shot with a
2:05 am
bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. i knew immediately something was wrong in that i heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the scan. we also know that trump spoke with president biden at some point. president biden briefly addressed the nation a short time ago. >> there is no place in america for this kind of violence. it's one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. we cannot allow this to be happening. we cannot condone this. >> we have our full team reporting on this. andy, let me go to you first. you have been following the investigation. where does it stand? >> things are moving pretty rapidly. the thing that they are looking at is how does 20-year-old thomas matthew crooks from bethel park, pennsylvania get to this site, get on a roof within 150 yards of the former
2:06 am
president of the united states, the republican candidate and squeeze out multiple rounds, hitting the former president and injuring two people and killing someone in the audience. how does that happen? you talk about secure versus unsecured elevations. but this individual is able to get off multiple rounds out in the open. i think that is one of the biggest questions. it is going to be the biggest part of the criticism. as the investigation goes forward there is going to be evidence gathering on multiple fronts. also trying to find out a timeline in -- immediately before this happened, but also what the suspects arc looked like in his life. the fbi is leading the investigation. you are also going to see administrative investigations
2:07 am
and in terms of hearings. >> what is the police presence like in bethel park? it is what is believed to be the suspects residence.>> reporter: there is definitely still a police presence here. it is the middle of the night. this is a quiet residential neighborhood, but it has turned into the focal point of this investigation. we do not have eyes on the shooter's home, but it is down the street and about three homes up. we have seen a large law enforcement presence. several different agencies. certainly the bethel park police department are the one setting up the perimeter. it is a perimeter that has grown over our time on the scene. we know that the county bomb squad is here.
2:08 am
they told me about an hour and a half-two hours ago that they were entering the shooter's home for the first time. they say it was an imminent operation. they did not know what they would expect to see inside or if they were going to find anything or if anything was going to be retrieved from the shooter's home. he warned us they would be taking that action. we have seen atf here. that is a federal agency. we've seen one agent walkout with a long gone. this is not a tense scene despite the perimeter. we know that these homes have not been evacuated. we have seen residents peek through their windows every once in a while. we've seen some neighbors come down just to get a sense of what is happening in the middle of the night in their neighborhood. we do know there are multiple agencies on the scene. they said they were making injury for the first time into the shooter's home.
2:09 am
no word on what if anything they found. we still see members of law enforcement walking back and forth. we know the state police is also here. many different law enforcement agencies. they expect to be here for hours if not days as the investigation continues. >> thank you for your reporting. what more do we know about the shooter as -- identified as thomas matthew crooks from bethel park, pennsylvania? >> part of what jack is seeing is really an attempt to gather background on who this person is. do they have a criminal record? were there mental health issues? what about the weapons that the atf is going to be looking at? in terms of the digital footprint and computers that could be seized. also looking at social media profiles, apps, emails, all of it is going to be under scrutiny in the coming hours,
2:10 am
days and months. when you talk about other things that would indicate potential motive. as you know, things tend to come out or don't come out immediately. i think it is hard to describe motive, especially when you can have things that are contradictory in terms of evidence seized. also, in terms of what might be missing. they are going to use all of this and they are going to put all of these things on a timeline. not only leading up immediately to the event, but this part of his life. >> we do know that he was registered as a republican and made a small donation at one point. a motive still not known, at least according to law enforcement officials. aaron mcglocklin, i know you
2:11 am
are in and mr., new jersey. what do we know about how trump is doing and his plans today? it's very early in the morning here on the east coast. a little more than 24 hours before the republican national convention kicks off.>> reporter: what we know is that his campaign is in complete communication, lockdown according to a memo seen by two sources telling nbc news. a memo went out to his campaign staff say anyone who speaks with the press, even on background or off the record will be found and terminated immediately. refrain from commenting, speculating, posted on social media. complete and total lockdown. nevertheless around 12:37 in the morning one of his aides posting a video of former president trump deplaning. in the video you see the former
2:12 am
president slowly walking down the steps, flanked by security. he briefly waves. no comments made. it is unclear at this hour exactly where he went next. we know that he has the trump national golf course here in bedminster. it's the place that he frequently goes to in the summer. it is also where his daughter was married. we saw around 1:20 a.m. a large convoy of security vehicles including state police exit in that direction away from the club, followed by support vehicles. it is possible he is spending the night here. again, we are waiting for word as to when we will see and hear from the former president next. >> what else can you tell us about those moments right after the shooting? we keep watching this video with the former president is
2:13 am
giving his rally speech where he then appears to grab the side of his head and then ducks. a short time later he gets up and we see the blood on the side of his face. we see him raise his fist in defiance and in strength and courage to show that he was okay and to give his rally supporters a positive signal that he was going to be okay. what do we know about his time at the hospital? what is transpired for him and his inner circle in the last several hours? >> one of the things that perhaps strikes me most is the audio. you can hear the scream. you can hear the panic of the security officials. you can hear that chaos as they gradually moved him and whisked him away to safety. we know that he spent about five hours at the hospital getting what i can only presume is a complete medical evaluation in butler, pennsylvania, before being
2:14 am
escorted by pennsylvania state police as well as the secret service to the airport where he then flew to newark new jersey. we also know that he is in contact with his children. we know that he spoke over the phone to donald trump jr. he posted that he spoke to his father and that his father was in great spirits. >> thank you for that great reporting. george the lease is in butler, pennsylvania where this happened. what is happening at that rally site? it remains a crime scene. >> reporter: that is right. hours removed from this assassination attempt you cannot get near the stage. all you can see is the flag in the distance. when we first arrived on the scene we were set up and you can see the stage behind us. immediately pennsylvania state police telling us we needed to leave.
2:15 am
we were potentially putting ourselves at risk. what the risk was they would not specify. of course we comply with law enforcement. we are here in a new location. you can see the road closures. getting to butler right now is a bit of a mess. the roadways are close, indicating that they are looking for information and maybe canvassing for evidence near where this assassination attempt took place. of course the community here in the dead of night is quiet. so many people, for some of our reporters for them this was their first rally and then this happens. you heard from the officials one person died and 2 of his critically wounded. we have not learned the identities of those peoples. you know that loved ones are grieving. one thing that nbc was able to confirm through the trump campaign is president donald trump has authorized a gofundme and a place for donations for the supporters and families of those wounded or killed.
2:16 am
all donations directed to those americans as they grieve and recover. that of course coming from the campaign. all we know at this time is that individual who lost their lives is that they are men. we are right next to a church. you have to wonder if services begin in a few hours what the conversation will be like for those who have to relive this trauma as his video has been circulating. one thing i do want to note that strikes me as we strike some of the video, and something that law enforcement pointed out, after the shots rang out you don't see chaos erupt. everyone holds the ground. law enforcement officials say it really helped in this situation from making a really horrific scene even worse when people tend to scatter when the shots rang out. that is something that investigators are looking into
2:17 am
and will continue canvassing as they ask anyone at the rally for any video. we know that everyone there had a cell phone. at this hour, as we are watching in the dead of the night you just see the pennsylvania state police presence. at this point they're handling the homicide investigation. we expect to learn more about those victims. who they were, how they were connected in any way to the rally. a very fluid seeing even though it is quiet. it is something we are going to continue monitoring. >> right. it is remarkable how calm people at that rally site work in the midst of chaos and that fear, having heard the shots and see the former president dropped to the ground before quickly getting up. thank you very much, george, please keep us posted as this investigation continues into the early morning hours.
2:18 am
gary, we have seen such an outpouring of reaction and a lot of statements from lawmakers in both parties, including leaders around the world. a really unified condemnation of this kind of violence.>> reporter: absolutely. condemnation and calls for prayers from both sides of the aisle. it doesn't matter if you are a republican or democrat. president biden was in delaware when the shooting took place. he was at church, somewhere he often is on saturday evening. if you left the press asked him if he was aware? he was soon after that briefed on the shooting. he wanted to get to the cameras as quickly as possible to speak to the nation and to call for national unity. he called the actions of the shooter sick. i want to read a portion of this. he said is one of the reasons we have to unite the country. we cannot allow this to be
2:19 am
happening. we cannot condone this. after he spoke to america he did speak to former president trump. they did connect while former president trump was in pennsylvania and the president himself was in delaware. the president now is back at the white house. you can be president from anywhere. certainly much safer and much more can begin to have the briefings that he needs to have, especially as we reach toward tomorrow or later today. that is at this point where he is going to be having a briefing with the vice president, homeland security officials and folks from the secret service as well. >> we are hearing from everyone from the uk, to japan and brazil, leaders condemning violence and offering their support for americans and of course the former president. i want to bring in a former homeland security spokeswoman who focus on the secret service. thank you so much for being here. i want you to listen to how law enforcement described the
2:20 am
immediate police response. this was during a press conference around midnight. >> a number of sounds were heard. it became apparent shots were being fired in that direction. it was a chaotic scene. law enforcement, i believe, acted heroically quickly identifying and neutralizing the threat, as well as responding to assist the various victims. bsp had a presence on the same along with our federal partners. we have since enhanced that present significantly, bringing in resources from all over the commonwealth to ensure that we have a speedy and thorough investigation. we are working very closely with the fbi as we work through this. >> so the secret service response in that moment as shots rang out, walk us through
2:21 am
that. >> what you saw was the secret service or members of former president trump detail spring into action for quickly. you saw them literally come from every direction to create a human bunker around the former president and bring him down, which you may not be able to see this, but there are barriers there in front of that podium. they brought him down to keep them safe. you can hear them talking to each other. they are clearly communicating. there is clearly a leader who is giving the instructions and the others following suit. you can actually hear them because of the hot mic, you can hear that the shooter had been taken care of and they were free to move the presidents. you saw the sharpshooters come in and make sure that area was clear for them to move the president from the stage to the
2:22 am
vehicle. really swift and amazing action from the secret service. this is what they do and this is what they do best. you just don't know about all of the successes that the secret service has. they often go unnoticed. they are tremendous. having seen them work firsthand, i know the level of detail that goes into every single event, big or small. they know exactly the route that they are going to take the dignitary. they know where the closest restroom is, the closest exit, where the closest hospital is. they've got all of that figured out ahead of time. they are incredible professionals and we are really grateful for their work today or last night. >> i am wondering as you have watched this video like we all have over and over what stands out most to you? >> i think what stands out is the fact that they literally put their human bodies on the line ahead to protect the
2:23 am
former president. this is what they do. i know a lot of those guys on the detail. their families are watching them at home. they do have bulletproof vest underneath their suits, but they don't even think. they put themselves right in harms way and it was i needed to do in order to protect the former president. it was an incredible scene. i know that they are going to be looking at everything and taking careful notes about what happened and what they can do better, especially as they gear up to prepare for protecting both the republican national convention and the democratic national convention as well. both of which they are responsible for. >> i want to talk more about that in a moment, but i want to get back to the security at this particular event. you are right. secret service are quick to react to those shots. yet, when it comes to providing security and really clamping
2:24 am
down on this zone, we are told that shooter was outside the security perimeter on top of a building about 150 yards away. that is not too far away. should that have been a focus of security ahead of this rally? >> we will find all of that out. i know the secret service will be asking those questions as well as the fbi to figure out what happened. they need to answer all of those questions on why there was a 9-to-5 vulnerability. they need those answers quickly. there may need to be a change in protocol, especially ahead of those conventions. it is important to understand how the threat materialize and how they can stop it potentially moving forward. i guarantee they're going to be looking at all of those things in the coming days. >> i also want to bring in carmen best. carmen, what you make of this
2:25 am
threat outside of the security perimeter and just how easy it appears it was for someone to take this kind of violent action? >> as you noted, it was surprising that there wasn't anyone there. we do not know until we talk to the secret service what kind of attention was paid to that particular venue beforehand. that may have done some sort of sweet and we are not aware. will have to wait to hear back from them. obviously there will be a debrief. additionally secret service also relies upon local law enforcement and others to participate and assist. that may have been an area that should have or could have been covered by other mutual aid. again, some unanswered questions early on as we are trying to figure out what happened. clearly the fact that they were
2:26 am
able to get the former president to safety very quickly and neutralize the threat immediately are all things, good things. there will be some things that probably can be looked at and done better in the future. that is why they have these types of debriefings at these events. >> we heard eyewitnesses say they saw the apparent shooter climbing up onto the building and saw him on the rooftop with this the gone. they were trying to alert police. your thoughts on that? >> obviously that is very concerning, considering what happened. that will definitely be looked at. not having been there but understanding that typically agencies work together on these types of events such as large gatherings, lots of people, ensuring that the secret service is taking care of their
2:27 am
target. that municipalities will be working with them to take care of other areas. i think there will be some discussion about what happened and it is something that will be addressed as we debrief this whole thing. >> carmen, what would you have expected the community policing presence to be like and what those different agencies would be doing throughout the course of the rally? take us inside what that is like to be there on the scene as a police officer or a member of the security detail. >> particularly for the police officer side, where works for almost three decades on a number of these types of things, you are locking down the outer perimeter. you are ensuring safe access routes. you are making sure that you are keeping an eye out on anything that looks unusual, any vehicles that appear to be going slowly or coming in at an
2:28 am
odd speed or anything that just looks out of the ordinary. you want officers to be looking at that. officers are good at that because they work these areas. they know the neighborhoods. they know what looks right and what belongs and what doesn't. that is often a benefit for them to just be very vigilant, particularly as emotions can run pretty high at some of these events. there is a lot of training and a lot of coordination between the secret service and local law enforcement. that is very typical. again, some things are concerning. i think there is going to have to be a debrief until we find out the details on what happened and how he was able to get on top of that building and create the damage that he did. >> carmen, standby. we have jonathan allen with us. jonathan, as we mentioned president biden and former
2:29 am
president trump spoke on the phone. we heard the president addressed the nation and the biden campaign have pulled all ads and pause all communications after the shooting. tell us more about the type of political reaction we are seeing in light of this really tragic event that has taken place? >> i think what you have seen from president biden is what you would expect from him as someone who has campaigned as a leader who wants to turn down the temperature. who wants to unify the country. who wants to see civil discourse. we are watching these images over and over. so horrific. a major party candidate for president, a former president will be targeted for an assassination. it is so hard to watch. it is not surprising to hear president biden say those
2:30 am
things. it has not been surprising to hear most of the responsible party leaders talking in that way, either in televised remarks to the camera or those who have put out a statement. what we have also seen is senator jb vance of ohio who is a possible vice presidential pick for trump. vivek ramaswamy who ran for the republican nomination came out with statements that blame other democrats or biden for what happened. immediately going to the political cultural. i don't think there is an irresponsible person in american who wants to see a presidential candidate targeted. it doesn't make any sense. i think you are going to see in the coming days a return to our basic partisanship. i think there were a few hours
2:31 am
of calls for turning down the temperature and then we go right back into the political course that everyone seems to be locked into. we should be able to look at an event like this and say maybe things haven't turned up too much. >> so much to discuss. andy, gary, carmen, please keep us posted. everyone please stay with us. much more of our special coverage into the investigation into the attempted assassination of former president donald trump. we will talk to a reporter who was there right after this break. this break.
2:34 am
the moment i met him i knew he was my soulmate. "soulmates." soulmate! [giggles] why do you need me? [laughs sarcastically] but then we switched to t-mobile 5g home internet. and now his attention is spent elsewhere. but i'm thinking of her the whole time. that's so much worse. why is that thing in bed with you? this is where it gets the best signal from the cell tower! i've tried everywhere else in the house! there's always a new excuse. well if we got xfinity you wouldn't have to mess around with the connection. therapy's tough, huh? -mmm. it's like a lot about me. [laughs] a home router should never be a home wrecker. oo this is a good book title.
2:36 am
donald trump during his rally in pennsylvania. we now know who the shooter was. the fbi has identified thomas matthew crooks, 20 years old of bethel park, pennsylvania. killed by law enforcement after opening fire. the former president says his ear was grazed by a bullet. we of course saw him with blood streaming down his face there on the stage after he initially docked. he stands back up and the secret service swarms around him to try to shield him. it all happened so quickly. really not a lot of thought. the reaction was swift and fortunately trump was okay. sadly one spectator at this rally was killed. two others were critically wounded. police have not yet identified the victims. they also have not yet offered insight into a motive. it has now become a sprawling
2:37 am
investigation. the fbi taking the lead with local police, state police and secret service all involved. there is still a serious police presence outside that government's residence in pittsburgh outside of a pittsburgh suburb which includes the fbi, the bomb squad, the atf. the rally site is also still an active crime scene. joining us now is simon levine who was at the rally when this assassination attempt happened. simon, thank you for joining us. how are you doing after everything you went through? >> i am okay. i am a little frazzled. i made it out. >> take us through what do you remember seeing? >> i was standing right by the press box and run around maybe 5-6 minutes after trump began
2:38 am
speaking. he was talking about immigration. we heard popping sounds to my left or stage right. at this point everyone dots. i went under the risers. we heard another volley of shots. people were screaming it down, shots fired. thankfully there wasn't a stampede of people. there was more so confusion. i think a lot of people i talked to todd it was firecrackers at first. at one point i emerged and i saw people cheering. you hurt people cheering. as trump was led away he race that is defiantly and people applauded him and secret service took him away. >> what you hurt those loud pops initially what went through your mind? you mentioned some people thought it was fireworks. what did you think it was? what did you feel? >> i've heard gunfire before. i was pretty sure that it was
2:39 am
shots fired as opposed to something else. i immediately got into fight or flight mode. i hid under the risers and i started reporting. >> when did you realize trump have been shot? >> as soon as i re-emerged after the second volley of shots. i thought trump raises this. you could barely make out from the distance that he had a little blood on his face, but it was perhaps a bit unclear from the rest of the crowd who was further away. >> you talked about going into reporting mold and that was sort of an instinct of yours. at this point the whole world as in the image you described of trump get a backup and raising his fist in the air. in your latest piece you described it this way: after mr. trump thrilled the crowd with a fist bump and made it offstage on his own power, his arm draped over the shoulder of
2:40 am
an agent some quickly saw political implications. trump was just selected today, folks, one man shouted. he is a martyr. what was that like to witness that moment first hand? >> i chatted with several rally goers after this. they had all expressed this unique emotional, unified feeling. they said this had united them as trump supporters in a way and were very encouraged to see people of the rally, especially those who were injured, people were coming to their aid. trying to make sure everyone was okay. politically a lot of people at the rally had told me in fact they saw this as a confirmation of their concerns that trump was basing so many attacks from people online, from the left, things of that variety. that this had only sort of
2:41 am
insured there voting for him grows. >> let me ask about the security presence. i think so many people are trying to make sense of the fact that someone could climb up on a building an open fire. what was the security presence like? what kinds of protocols were there to get into the rally even? >> many of the rallies often have a tsa style screening where you go through metal detector and secret service or tsa agents will palm through your bags and things of that variety. you will be wanted over with a magnetic metal detector. this is pretty standard procedure for political events. what was interesting is this with such a large grassy area with very few trees in the immediate vicinity outside of the perimeter of the rally. there were a variety of vantage points from buildings outside of the perimeter from which you can see president trump. you could see the center rally
2:42 am
venue. at the press briefing that officials gave at the butler township police department they told us the building from which the suspected shooter's body was found was outside the immediate security area. it is not to our knowledge screened. >> did you even realize where the shots were coming from? we have heard from some witnesses who believe they saw the shooter at some point. what about when you were experiencing it, did you see this shooter at any point? >> no, i didn't see the shooter at all. it was apparently from west of the venue. most people that i talked to identified the shots came from left or stage right. some people thought it had come from the left-hand bleachers, but the shooter was apparently
2:43 am
further away. i had not seen the shooter. >> when did you know it was safe that the event had been completed and there was no longer an active shooter? >> i guess frankly the police and officials told us to clear out. people started yelling out. there was a lot of confusion. like i said earlier, thankfully there was no stampede or crowd crush. the crowd was relatively calm if not for a few folks that were panicked. after we were instructed to leave not long after the president was escorted out we assumed it was safe to leave at that point. however, it wasn't very clear. i think a lot of people were very reassured from speaking with them that things were safe. things were okay when they saw president trump had not been
2:44 am
mortally injured. >> as someone who has been covering this campaign season i wonder if your mind has jumped yet to what this means as the campaign now continues and the current political climate we are all experiencing? >> it is interesting that this is coming at the cusp of the republican national convention, set to start next week. from the trump campaign it seems so far that the program will proceed relatively is normal. we will have to see what the mood and the tenor of those early events are on monday and what that looks like. as for now i can say a lot of the rally goers that i spoke with were incredibly energized to vote and support trump. some of which who had said they were fearful of him in the past. i anticipate based on what they have told me that this will sort of grow his base. a lot of them have indicated
2:45 am
they just feel even more passion to go out and vote and recruit their friends in voting for president trump. >> it is one thing to spur people to take that action and to be motivated for voting. i wonder if this takedown the temperature at all? do you have a sense of whether that is going to take place? >> frankly i don't. i just got home from the rally location. it was held at a fairgrounds with very minimal service. i am just coming back online. i am not sure where the conversation goes from here. >> thank you so much for sharing what you went through and being our eyes and ears in helping us cover this historic event. so glad you are okay. thank you again for joining us. >> thank you for having me. >> just before midnight hallie jackson spoke with a republican
2:46 am
congressman who was that the rally -- was there at the rally. here is part of their conversation. >> we had some pre-rally speeches. myself, mike kelly, my colleague in the house, the president arrived. we did our pictures and we met with some people. he came out and he wasn't speaking for more than six or seven minutes when we heard rapid gunfire. the first couple of shots, i don't think any of us knew exactly what was going on. i guess it was maybe the fourth shot when it hit the president. when he put his hand up to his head and hit the deck, everybody in the place knew we were under fire. the secret service did its job. our pennsylvania state troopers were also highly engaged. there was a lot of security.
2:47 am
very sadly an individual that was sitting right behind me if you rose was also hit. that was a bad scene. my understanding is that individual was a fatality, he was killed. it was chaotic. we are lucky that the president -- former president trump by a quarter of an inch of what it assassination. >> you described being so close to someone who was ultimately killed. i imagine there was a fear for your own safety? >> i think everyone was beer -- and fear. certainly when -- everyone was in fear. there was still a lot of
2:48 am
pandemonium, tears and quite a bit of fear. regarding the shooter, look, i got some information on him a little earlier if it's the same person. it seems that he put out something earlier that was very threatening. that he was going to do something today. again, if it was the same individual. rather this is a mental illness or where the level of hate comes from. the idea that he thinks that he will go in and do some good by assassinating a candidate for president, perhaps the future president and the former president is pretty sad. i am glad when someone like that think they can get away with something like that that he did not, number one. number two, he paid the ultimate price. we need to deter such craziness. on the same note i will add we need an environment, more of
2:49 am
open discourse and type herbalife in, left accusation and more conversations. that is the responsibility, i think of those in elected office and hopefully this will be a catalyst to do that. >> any contact with anyone in the trump broader orbit since this happened tonight in butler? >> just antidotal, nothing specific. we do hear that the president is well. he is strong. he is fired up as you can imagine. we are just happy that he is okay and we are going to see him in milwaukee. >> do you believe milwaukee will move forward as planned? we have been reporting out that honestly the former president says he is looking forward to
2:50 am
being there. clearly there may be changes related to some of the remarks et cetera. i wonder what your sense of that is? >> i agree. this is a very serious event. hopefully we can find some good in it or some opportunity to unite. to realize that we are all americans. we need to work toward common goals. the president is a fighter. he's got great energy. something tells me he is going to be quite present at his convention. >> this attempted assassination of former president donald trump who has survived this event and appears to be in good spirits, we are told, and is
2:51 am
recovering. returning to new jersey just a short while ago. back with us jonathan allen, the former dha such -- carmen best. carmen, take us inside of the investigation. what do you see as the focus at this moment? >> thank you for having me again. right now law enforcement is really going to be looking at finding out what the motive us -- was. they're going to be a number of aspects they are looking at. as you know they are at the suspects home. they are going to be trying to find any evidence that will show them, you know, what prompted this, if anyone else was involved. whom i don't know what and when. all that will be going on as well as looking at how they reacted and responded to the assassination attempt on former
2:52 am
president trump. they will be reviewing all of those details and coming together with other agencies, looking for any other potential information that they can find out. they are going to be looking at the future. how many other -- others may be affected by this because of copycat behavior or some sort of retaliatory behavior based on the rhetoric. a lot of different aspects. there will be teams of people coordinating, looking at every single piece of this. >> i asked earlier to marsha what she sees in this video. when you look at this video, carmen, what stands out to you about the incident, about the rally site? about reaction to the shots ringing out, what catches your eye as a trained law
2:53 am
enforcement personnel? >> that is why we train. that is why law enforcement personnel trained. people fall back on the training immediately. the secret service immediately surrounded the former president and made sure he was safe. the shooter was taken out and neutralized immediately. i think those things worked well. they had an escape vehicle, if you will, standing by very quickly to remove the president from the same. i didn't see that, but we know law enforcement moves quickly to make sure they could render the area safe. i think overall this tragic and horrible event could have been much worse but for the prompt
