thanks for watching. i'm i'm in modine in for stephanie role. you can watch my show saturday and sunday at 7:00 p.m. eastern right here on msnbc. for all of our colleagues across the networks of nbc news thanks for staying up late. see you this week. week. okay in the past eight years, donald trump has given three speeches. three accepting his party's nomination for president.
9:01 pm
his first speech now feels like a lifetime ago but it will always be remembered for this moment. >> i have joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people who cannot defend themselves. nobody knows the system better than me. which is why i alone can fix it. >> i alone can fix it. that instantly became the thing everyone took away from that speech. it really nailed exactly how trump managed to turn the republican party into a cult of
9:02 pm
personality focused on just one man. donald trump himself. but in the eight years since then, the cult of maga has become something of an established religion in american politics. trump spent that time fashioning himself as a quasi messianic figure to his followers. then a bullet narrowly missed his head in pennsylvania. that gave his followers all the confirmation they needed to deify him. to thrust upon him the mandate of heaven itself and trump used his speech last night to take his martyrdom to the next level. >> i'm not supposed to be here tonight. >> yes you are! >> i stand before you in this
9:03 pm
arena only by the grace of almighty god. many people say it was a prove den usual moment. when i rose surrounded by secret service. the crowd was confused because they thought it was dead. a few short days ago, my journey with you nearly ended. we know that. and yet here we are tonight all gathered together. we live in a world of miracles. no matter what dangers come our way. no matter what obstacles lie in our path. we will keep striving toward our shared and glorious destiny and we will not fail. we will not fail. >> in his 2016 convention speech, trump did not mention god or christianity once. except for the traditional god bless you at the end of the speech. this year, trump chose to cast himself in nearly biblical terms. a latter day saint sent by god
9:04 pm
and resurrected to save the country as its president. at this point it is not just trump claiming he is the chosen one. it is the republican party. >> proverbs 28 read it is wicked flee though no one pursues but the righteous are as bold as a lion. and that truly epitomizes donald trump. he is a lion. >> if you didn't believe in miracles before saturday, you better be believing right now. >> two days ago, evil came for the man we admire and love so much i. thank god that his hand was on president trump. >> you know, i have no doubt that god lowered a shield of protection over president trump. >> god almighty intervened because america is one nation
9:05 pm
under god and he is certainly not finished with president trump. >> by the grace of god, divine intervention, and your guardian angels above, you survived. >> now donald trump's religious identity here is more than just rhetoric. for the past four years, trump hads has aligned himself with the christian nationalist movement long part of the republican party base but which has gained enormous influence. this weekend, the rnc adopted a new platform full of christian nationalist agenda items. putting religion into public schools and appointing a federal task force to investigate anti-christian bias. that's in addition to right wing priorities like protecting the unborn, the sanctity of families. going after abortion rights, limiting access to contraception and maybe ending no-fault divorce. so there is a revival happening inside the republican party. one where donald trump plays
9:06 pm
the role of preacher and profit and messiah all rolled into one. joining me now are george conway of the anti-psychopath path. susan glasser and new york times opinion columnist. thank you all for being here, george, i absolutely understand the reaction of looking to god in a moment of having your life threatened. and a bullet whizzing by your head. that is a very normal natural human instinct but this seems to be a different order of magnitude. i wonder what you think about that. >> i would like to think of the religious aspect of it as a separate overlay. i would never criticize someone's religious beliefs for
9:07 pm
being religious beliefs. what i see here is let's set aside the religious. you have a classic cult and a classic authoritarian or fascist party movement here. and one of the elements of both of those kinds of organizations is there's a absolute cleavage of good versus bad, us versus them. and that's true. that's how you maintain a cult. you are prevented if you are a cult member from going to the outside and being influenced by someone. and also, in politics when you see these authoritarian type, everybody else is the enemy if you are not a member of the party and you have to show absolute loyalty to the party. this just has a religious overlay on it of christian nationalism that really fundamentally is anti-christian because you know, the idea of
9:08 pm
hating your enemy and saying some of the things these people say like fjb, you know, is very unchristian. so but it's a toxic, toxic mix because they are using this moment, this moment, you know, god bless him for surviving. that live round missed his head by whatever. they are using this moment to combine the elements of a tradition of cultism and fascism with which i think is sacrilegious, religious overtones. why some of his own party members sarcastically call him orange jesus behind his back. it is very dangerous and very scary and absolutely absurd given the moral content donald trump. >> yeah, what do you think of that using religion as a vehicle to deliver this messianic, to deliver him as a
9:09 pm
messianic figure who cannot be questioned and whose authority is absolute? >> i think it is hard to refute that is not only what is happening but that is the intent so when donald trump presents himself as a singular solution so anything that ails you, one of the things he is doing is saying if you do not believe in me, if you do not follow me, you are not just on the side of wrong, you are on the side of evil. when we talk in those binaries, good, bad, evil, the devil, angel binary, what we are doing is we are setting up a singular figure to be the only vehicle for political participation which i will agree is like by definition, a form of fascism. it is coming in the guise of religion is not surprising, we have seen this growing christian nationalist movement in this country for many years.
9:10 pm
that it has found an outlet in donald trump. might be mildly surprising. given again his actual history but it shouldn't surprise us that christian nationalism is attracted to power. that has always been the goal of christian nationalism. what should scare us is how successful it is. >> let's talk about the success, susan on one hand, as you point out here, it is donald trump. who is the religious figure in all of this. donald trump, the thrice married philanderer who was questioned if he had sex with a porn star in the last presidential debate. donald trump who has never shown any particular zeal for christianity. and donald trump who last night i have to say, susan, went on and on and on for like 95 minutes and he himself didn't necessarily seem all that convinced of the sermon he was
9:11 pm
giving if you will. >> that is absolutely right. i was there in milwaukee at the republican convention and you know, it was two very different speeches that we might have had an even different reaction had donald trump stopped after 15 minutes. he went on so long it was the longest convention acceptance speech that anyone has ever recorded. and believe me. people were losing interest. and not following it. but a lot of it was his standard, very, very divisive untruthful rhetoric. he grafted together a typical trump rally with this sort of i'm your deer leader coming back to the white house for you. it is a little jarring and inconsistent. but the overall vibe you have gotten from trump's presence at this convention was kind of late stage roman emperor. and remember that the romans i
9:12 pm
believe made religious cults so it is not at all inconsistent iconography of donald trump has always had a little bit of the imperial grandeur, the extra goal, the columns everywhere. that's very trumpy and so is this newfound rhetoric which as you have said justifies it. but it also plays to the constituency. he has realized perhaps in a way he did not fully get in 2016 as a newcomer to politics, the most faithful core religious block of the republican party as it has been reinvented are really very, very hard right religious nationalists. so those were the voting block in 2016 and 2020 who voted more for him than any other group. so he is also playing politics
9:13 pm
by using this language. it didn't strike me as super sincere but it is cynical and calculateed in many respects to be a political position right now. >> we were told it is going to be about unity and it will bring the country together and it was not that at all. and when he went off script, it wasn't to have these moments of introspection or even comedy. there was just more darkness and you know, incoherence. >> there are two things going on. one is the fact his personality did not change as a result of what happened saturday and it will never change because of what happened saturday. he views everything as being about him as a narcissistic sociopath. someone not with him is to be overcome and destroyed.
9:14 pm
he doesn't believe in unity unless the unity is him. >> right. unless he is the unity. >> do you think, jd vance struck a more upbeat or congenial note. he is known for saying the same thing susan glasser did. we are in late stage republicanism. we are at the end of the roman empire. he is known for his dark foreboding vision of the fusion. and i wonder the combination of these two individuals, does that bring people in? >> it may bring some people in, but it certainly keeps people in the fold. you have, you know, we have been talking about how there is an ingroup and out group and the cleavage of good and bad.
9:15 pm
but part of a way fascist movements and cults develop that in and out system is by telling the people who are in the group there are existential threats from outside the group. that brings the people within the group together and necessarily doesn't result in unity. >> you have new writing about young maga. and i think to george's end, the new recruits to this movement. can you talk a little bit about sort of what is attracting them to this apocalyptic vision? >> i think a few things. one, this messianic performance that donald trump does. it is important for us to understand there is another overlay, which is celebrity. so you get this marriage of two cultures i think young, conservative or conservative leaning people in particular
9:16 pm
are very familiar with. they have been formed in the shadow of a rising christianity movement, same everything in their lives has been about celebrity. so they are familiar with preachers, religious figures and celebrities. donald trump says i'm both. right? so i think that is very appealing to young people. i think it is also, you know, the economics matter. the republicans have spent tens of millions of dollars over the last 50 years building an infrastructure to target, develop, build trust, and relationships with young people, in particular, young white people. i think it is important to point out. not just young white people. it is successful with young white men in particular but they are not the only ones susceptible to a messianic
9:17 pm
strong daddy like figure that grafts onto their fears about masculinity, about economic mobility. that he is able to capture that. he is the beneficiary then of a whole lot of investment in developing that infrastructure. i would point out that young people like to be entertained and something that donald trump has always understood, perhaps better than any contemporary politician is that politics is entertainment. >> yeah. i mean and i get that susan. but hulk hogan? the hulkster? it felt more like last call at vegas than it did show time on the main stage here at radio city. i just, it did not seem like trump was at the top of his game last night. >> the hulk hogan thing was in some respects a very fitting opening to the finale of this
9:18 pm
convention. it was a joke, it was a circus. and you know some people might buy ticket to that show. my guess is most people wouldn't buy tickets to that show. it is not taylor swift and it is probably not a majority either of young people or of people in this country who want to go to that show. you know. i did find it was a very interesting contrast in this year's convention from eight years ago from say in cleveland there was a sense of a party whose future and soul was up for grabs. there was a fight still on at the republican convention back when donald trump first became the nominee. ted cruz famously gave that speech and said vote your conscious and wouldn't endorse trump then you had this time, it was a less friction filled atmospherement all of the other thinkers had been purged or certainly haven't shown up. the remaining non-maga fragments of this party.
9:19 pm
even nikki haley who did show up was very uncomfortable. she was about the only speaker who didn't go on and on and on about donald trump's magical personal qualities and i just think that is important. this was a show for the dedicated inner core of the maga faithful and you know, i don't know. i think maybe for them, too, it was a little bit too much of a joke. hulk hogan, crazy voice. he sounded like some kind of disney version of a wrestling star making a political speech. it was really weird to see it in person. >> maybe he is a really big star in the strange parallel universe we seem to have found ourselves in. or at least for one night. susan, thank you for your time tonight. jesse and george, please stick around. we have a lot more to get to, tonight including new reporting on the behind the scenes negotiations in the democratic

as of this evening 35 house and senate democrats are publicly asking president biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race. privately leaving democrats including speaker amerita nancy pelosi and former president barack obama have reportedly raised concerns about president biden staying in the race. new reporting from politico says pelosi has voiced support for an open nomination process if president biden does indeed bow out. but that is still very much a big if. so far, the president has not indicated he is going anywhere. after testing positive for covid earlier this week, biden said he will be back on the campaign trail. the stakes are high, and the choice is clear. together we will win. george, first of all, i mean, from the outside slash inside, where would you find yourself in partisan affiliation, it
