california history. it started a little over 10 days ago, the first few days were extreme fire behavior it was going very fast and difficult to control. crews made progress last week thanks to a break in the weather and not break is over. it is now hot, dry, high winds. the heat is important not just because of the effect of the fire itself but because of the effect it has on the crews themselves. more than 6000 human beings are fighting this fire right now. take a listen to what one calfire official had to say about that. >> many of these firefighters have not had days off in over 30 days. they work 30, 40, 50 days at a time without any time to recuperate. we try to do everything we can at base camp, nutrition is very important. hygiene to keep us healthy. but firefighters do get tired. >> reporter: so far this

summer, wildfires have burned more than 30 times the amount of land that was burned in all of last year's wildfire season. we are in an incredibly fast moving, dangerous fire season this year. we have not even come close to the peak of the fire season which is the end of august and beginning september. the concern about how the heat is affecting the workers is a serious thing to pay attention to in the next few weeks and months. >> that is a terrible statistic that you gave us about this compared to last year. awful. thank you for sharing. glad to get that update from your. it might be a clue but it might not, the one thing we learned about the rollout of kamala harris's vice presidential pick. presidential pick. good day to all of you from nbcnews.
11:02 am
we begin with decision 2024, the big story today is vice president kamala harris inching closer to her choice of vice presidential running mate now down to six contenders. that is fresh off securing enough delegate votes to clinch the democratic nomination. although results will not be official until monday evening, that is when the virtual voting process closes. new reaction this hour to donald trump the tax at this week's black journalist convention. here is congresswoman ayanna pressley talking to katie thank you >> it was offensive and predictable. they are desperate. kamala harris has been a woman of color her entire life. these trafficking and racist tropes and sexist tropes him a that is not a new experience for her. we are just going to keep doing what we need to do to build a broader diverse coalition to ensure we are successful in november.
11:03 am
>> meanwhile, donald trump will speak at a rally in atlanta in about three hours or so. he will be at the same venue filled by enthusiastic democrats who showed up days ago by an appearance by vp harris. also a big debate. trump now claims he has terminated his agreement with abc for a debate on september 10th. he now wants a fox news host a debate on september 4th while the harris campaign says he is just running scared. we have a number of reporters and analyst in place ready to go over all of the big headlines. we are going to allie rafah first who is following the latest on the harris campaign from wilmington delaware. how is the vice president responding to trump changing the terms of the first debate? >> reporter: you will remember after president biden dropped out of the 2024 race, we saw former president trump ignite a whole debate around the abc news debate that was scheduled for august 10, i'm sorry, september 10th against president biden. now the former president is
11:04 am
saying he is not going to participate in that debate at all saying that he has agreed to debate vice president harris on a totally different date and that debate will be with fox news channel. the vice president is responding to all of this using the former president's words against him. she is saying in a post on x quote, it is interesting how any time any place becomes one specific time, one specific say space. i will be there on september 10th, like we agreed to. i hope to see him there. you remember trump's reasoning behind not debating harris initially in the wake of the president dropping out of the races that she was not formally the democratic nominee yet, pushing back on that debate for that reason. that has changed as of yesterday when she received enough delegate support to formally clinch that nomination. and her campaign, as a marker of that milestone, hosted a call with supporters that the vice president herself joint.
11:05 am
>> later this month, we will gather in chicago be united as one party where we are going to have an opportunity to celebrate this historic moment together. again, this campaign is about all of us coming together. people coming together from every walk of life, every lived experience and being fueled by our love of country, knowing that we are prepared to fight for the best of who we are we believe in the promise of america, promise of freedom, opportunity and justice, not just for some but for all. >> reporter: harris riding the momentum. while at home this weekend with no public events on her schedule as we expect her to start meeting face-to- face with some of the top contenders on her vp shortlist. we expect her to announce a decision for a running mate by tuesday. that is when we expect her to the campaign trail with whoever she chooses for the first time.
11:06 am
>> let me just add something, we are hearing from a campaign official that it is their understanding that abc intends to maintain that airtime for whomever would show up. if donald trump does not show up , it might be kamala harris having a platform to discuss her policy and make her appeal to the country and to the citizens for voting. you very much. see you again. we will get to nbc campaign embed jake traylor he is in atlanta work donald trump and jd vance will be holding a rally. donald trump says that he is going to quote, unless today on kamala harris. . what are you expecting? >> reporter: where i'm sending right now it looks very different than four days ago. or days ago it was vice president harris that was here hosting a rally wrappers mac like quibble and megan the stallion. it was or days ago that kamala harris challenge donald trump
11:07 am
to a debate. on truth social donald trump said he would debate but not to the original abc debate that he agreed to instead he said he would do a debate only a fox news. was quick to defuse that saying she would not participate and that is donald trump running to fox news to bail him out. since harris joined the top of the ticket a few weeks ago for the democrats. we have seen both republicans and democrats really race to define who she is. in terms of what we can expect to hear tonight from the former president, he will continue going after the vice president's record at the border, he calls her a failed border czar. he will also attack her on her energy policy and he will also say she is a failed respected world leader and not taken seriously on the world stage. from the beginning, since vice president harris announced she would be running, we saw donald trump states this entire thing of what he calls quote coup. alternately joe biden not having any decision and vice president harris being put up to it. take a listen to what he said
11:08 am
yesterday in a fox news business interview. >> we are leading the election by a lot. we knock down joe biden, they did not do too well in the debate and that ended it, then he went through a series of problems. it was actually a a crew of a president. he campaigned for a year and ended up winning and they threw him out they said get out now or we will get you out the hard way. they said, there is a easy way and there's a hard way, joe and you will get out. he got out and they put this woman and who is a failed candidate. hour of course, donald trump has no means for saying that, no background or evidence for saying that. we do know today that we will see a very crowded stadium, just like what we sow with vice president harris, we will tune in to see how he sharpens his criticism against this fresh opponent with just 100 days
11:09 am
until the election. >> we will wait and see what he unleashes. thank you for keeping an eye on that. new details from the fallout from trump's interview at the national association of black conference, the nabj. that is where he claims vice president harris happened to turn black a few months ago. we are learning that trump almost did not take the states because he did not want to be back checked live. joining me now democratic strategists and former advisor to the democratic campaign, and brendan buck who previously served as press secretary to former vp candidate paul ryan. good to see you two. you are in the room for trump's interview first, tell us about the real-time reaction and explain why you posted on social media that it was a mistake for the conference to have trump do this event. what you say to those who say it was
11:10 am
good to expose him for who he is? >> thanks for having me. of being in the room there were gasps and audible cheer specifically when he attacked the vice president about her race. it is a room that is 98% black. he is used to speaking to rooms that are 98% white. to walk in that room and assault black people and attack black journalist and her network at the same time and to have had such a fall, it was over an hour, maybe hour 15 minutes. i was sitting there hearing nabj officials talk about how they were planning on releasing a statement and having that conversation with those of us who were in attendance. any of us had been sitting in the room for three hours waiting for him to take the stage. there was no conversation around what happened. what we found out is from whispers in the room from officials is he did not want to be live fact checked in anyway and he was not going to take the stage if that was going to
11:11 am
happen. from start it was rough-and- tumble and within 30 seconds of the first question, which was literally a conversation that was basically a rundown of all the things he said about black journalist. all of the quotes that they have around some of the negativity that he has targeted specifically black women journalist in addition to black run cities. all of these things that have made black people not necessarily even give the republican ticket a second look because they recognize that the race is coming from donald trump is real. he didn't want to answer to his own quotes and how that came out within the first 20 seconds of being asked that question, people started walking out of the room, literally. the only reason we did not have more is because we were there were cheers going back and forth but the secret service was there to stop people from getting loud and rambunctious. in addition to that, this is a journalism conference, many of these individuals are mindful
11:12 am
of their employers and trying not to do anything that could instigate not having a job the next day. the questions and the comments in the room were largely around why is he here at all? this is a journalism conference that has a theme of fighting disinformation. you have disinformation in chief speaking right now. i was in a row that was ahead of a student group, those student journalists who are still in college were questioning why we had a disinformation theme and we had the king of disinformation on the states. it did not jell well at all, especially in a city like chicago that donald trump has had nothing good to say about this before he ran for elected office and in a room full of people that he does not speak to. his comments were not for black audience at all they were for the audience that he consistently talks to regularly. >> i want to pick up with that. the "washington post" op-ed states this is not the audience trump was aiming for. trump was not speaking to them between may god is behind
11:13 am
beyond the hill in chicago that loves mocking people of color. this is further underscored that trump is not looking to grow his electorate but instead keep giving his base he always has? will that have consequences? >> i think that is what he ended up doing and that is what is his instinct is. i do not think that was his plan for i think the plan was built around this was a campaign that said they would get a historic number of black votes this election and they were going to completely change the coalition. i think they went there because they thought this would be an opportunity to do that. they did this when they thought they were still running against joe biden. he showed who he truly is i do not think it was successful and once he was challenged he reverted to the same old donald trump, which is why i respectfully disagree that he should not have had that platform. if you only allow donald trump to be heard in
11:14 am
such speeches where he says things that are on a prompter and only speaks to his referred audience and fox news interviews, the rest of the country is not going to see who he really is. i think asking him questions and showing his true self is exactly what we should have read we need to respect people enough to understand that they can know when he is lying. it is not a secret that he is a liar. we try to protect them so much i think when you show them who he is, that was a disaster of an event absolute disaster. >> 100% it was a disaster. let me ask both of you and i will have you go first brendan, trump's campaign said we need this cool. they made that decision to do this event and you think they would know the candidate and what he's capable of. it was a disaster. why did they put him in the position? >> he was a terrible candidate. i imagine this was a good idea when they were running against
11:15 am
joe biden. every thing was going well and they could breeze into and change the game. i think this is all the more reason why that's like when people realize it is not a stage manage campaign it is a person you're talking about and the more you see the person you're reminded of who he is. >> ameshia, the same thing about the campaign, they knew who he is and they know it's an environment he's not comfortable with, why did they let him do this? i know the bigger picture that brendan is making, cool. the campaign said green like this? >> they know who he is and they will play into the model war room base. donald trump like to talk about black people in front of white audiences. he does not make a habit of talking about black people front a black audiences who use the greatest hits when he walked upon the states. this is not decided when joe biden was still at the top of the ticket or the democratic nominee. this was decided two days before
11:16 am
nabj started. donald trump was invited weeks ago and he never said yes at all. he made that decision two months before. all of the membership, we all got an email two nights before we flew to chicago for nabj to start. this was not planned in advance. this was planned because he saw that it was the day after. he made the comments the day after the big atlanta event for kamala harris, he wanted to wipe her out of the news. he also wanted to wipe out all of the commentary around his own vice presidential nominee who has the single cat lady comments. he wanted to create a different news cycle and conversation. is is not something that his campaign has wanted to do. they have been invited to nabj every time he is the republican nominee and he said no every single time. this is the only time he came and he only decided at the last minute. >> brendan, it's get to some of the polls, they suddenly show
11:17 am
donald trump losing ground in swing states. what are you hearing among republicans about the sudden erosion? is there a sense that the backslide will not stop him? for example we have the latest michigan poll that has it neck and neck, it was neck and neck with biden in it now shows harris up by 11. have you seen anything like that so quickly? >> i was skeptical of a poll that shows harris leading by 11 in michigan are losing by four in pennsylvania that is not likely to happen. a lot of republicans are saying that map that we have gotten so used to that the only states that are really in play for biden, that blue wall is a much bigger map now. i am from the state of georgia, talk to people down there, they think she could win georgia. arizona and nevada i think are tougher but they are in play. she has more paths to victory. before it was you have to win
11:18 am
michigan, you have to win wisconsin you have to win pennsylvania and if you don't do that you will lose. now you can lose michigan and wisconsin and win in georgia and still get there. it makes for a very different race when you're trying to spend money in different places there are a lot of republicans in places like the south that are pretty worried. >> this is making for a lot of fun for steve kornacki. we will have to have him on to give us his take. i want you both to stay with me, this has been a great discussion. we have learned something about the rollout for kamala harris's vice presidential pick. is it a clue or something to keep us guessing? we will be back in 90 seconds. . t fast and reliable internet from the same network that powers our phones. and election cycle for the harris campaign is going to be one of the most important that we have seen historically. with that being said it matters that he is from pennsylvania. it matters that he is a good ag, it matters that he has a long-standing relationship that goes back years with vice president kamala harris. because we have the special relationship with hezbollah and that activity there has to be very strategic conversation held and i think shapiro's relationship with the arab community, with the muslim community is really strong. we have seen people try to pick up things from his past, they, when he was in college and basically use that to nullify him as a potential choice. i think the harris campaign will make the right stride if they chose shapiro. >> always good to see you both. thank you much.

one doubts iran's threats. initially you look back on wednesday, one of the first statements bowing revenge for the death of ismail haniyeh came from the supreme leader of iran. when a statement like that comes out to the rest of the world, the arab world in particular, that is not just a statement that is a order from the supreme leader of iran. it was a understatement today from iran's revolutionary guard and in it they claim israel killed ismail haniyeh, the political leader of hamas i firing a short range project out from outside of the guest residence. there have been other reporting, mainly from the "new york times", that says they are citing sources in the reporting that this was actually some sort of explosive device that was planted in the room where he was staying months in advance and detonated remotely. what stands out in the statement that came out from the iran revolutionary guard is reiterating what they plan to do next. they say this in part, the iran in revolutionary guard quote, stresses the revenge for the blood of murdered ismail
11:30 am
haniyeh is inevitable. the statement goes on to say that israel will face severe punishment with iran deciding the appropriate time, place, and type of retaliation. this is something that everybody here takes very seriously. people have been told to make sure they have shelters cleared out and that they are prepared to seek shelter for hours or days if it comes to that. people are looking back to what iran did in april when they fired 300 plus missiles and drones towards israel and they think that might be the base of what could happen. people really do not know. there was a team of negotiators, israeli negotiators went to cairo, egypt today where they were supposed to discuss a potential cease-fire and hostage deal, one that seemingly was stopped after some of these high profile leaders were killed, allegedly at the hands of israel. this group did go anyway. as far as we know, hamas was not there, we are waiting for official confirmation. they did make the trip, israeli

through an elaborate deal involving seven countries. among those released are several critics of vladimir putin's regime, some were astonished they were released but vowing to return to russia someday when putin is no longer in power. >> after spending a year, straight year of solitary confinement, i spent two and half years in solitary confinement, i was not able sure if i could speak in any language. to be out in this world and be in the middle of an airport busy with people, i don't have enough words in any language to express it. >> joining me now is jonathan franks, spokesman and strategist for the bring our families home campaign. he also worked on the case to free u.s. marine trevor reed from russian custody back in 2022. welcome. i am curious to your
11:44 am
reaction to this multifaceted deal, how challenging do you think it was to pull this off? were you surprised by the enormous scope? >> thanks for having me. i was shocked by this enormous. i am in awe by what they pulled off. i heard the other day this is the largest prisoner swap since 1985 when i was four years old. it was certainly a historic day. something that jake sullivan said on thursday it was a really, really good day. >> can you talk about what getting back to normal routines and the lives that they were taken from will look like now x we do know they start at the brooke army medical center. it does have a focus program and it has treated other detainees including brittney griner and travis king. how difficult of a process is this? what are the biggest hurdles? >> you have to remember that these folks while in prison they were told when to sleep,
11:45 am
when to eat, when to go to the bathroom. now that they had been released , all of a sudden there is a flurry of choices that have to be made at all times. as was alluded to in terms of walking through an airport. they are not used to making a variety of decisions that go into freeing human life. it does take a second to acclimate and folks are often dazed and it takes just a minute to get back to a place where you can exercise your free well. >> what about long-term, what is the biggest hurdle, you think? >> i think long-term the biggest hurdle is whether they got the help at the outset that they needed in order to be successful. that is part of the genius of taking them to san antonio and have them go through this program. it used to just be for military folks, they have retooled it or civilians and i think it has been hugely helpful. i have had several clients go
11:46 am
through it and i have never had a client fail after going to that program. >> that is good to hear. the russians released in exchange including a hitman, a hacker, a man who committed cyber fraud and a couple who spied for russia while posing as argentinians. what can break the cycle of innocent americans being detained in russia on false charges and only returned only when actual criminals are returned? >> unfortunately this cycle of what i call states sponsored kidnapped for ransom has gone on since the dawn of time. it is a very challenging phenomenon to stop. i think there absolutely needs to be a focus, and a focus by people smarter than i, on how we impose consequences on these hostagetaking countries. obviously once an american gets, as a the president alluded to, once an american gets caught, we have to bring them home. in the conversation about
11:47 am
prevention is a separate one. >> speaking of bringing some home, there are still several americans detained in russia including a client of yours, air force veteran travis leak. what is his story and what is happening? >> travis leak had been living successfully in russia for some time. he was set up in a drug bust that seems to have been largely engineered so that the arresting police officers could have an american to hand over to fsb, which is good for their careers. in fact, the complaining witness and travis's case, the only witness against him, recanted on the stand and was charged with and jailed for perjury. there is no case against him, he is innocent. he is another american at the wrong place at the wrong time. arguably trevor reed was the same way. some rank-and-file russian police officer decided to make
11:48 am
him famous buyer arresting an american. quite frankly, i think travis meets the criteria for wrongfully detained and that is the discussion we will have with the government in the coming days. >> good luck with all of that. jonathan franks, thanks for joining us. >> the sparkle for gold for team usa in the city of lights. the big highlights from paris coming up. coming up. chase freedom unlimited. so, if you're off the racking... ...or crab cracking, you're cashbacking. cashback on flapjacks, baby backs, or tacos at the taco shack. nah, i'm working on my six pack. switch to a king suite- or book a silent retreat. silent retreat? hold up - yeeerp? i can't talk right now, i'm at a silent retreat. cashback on everything you buy with chase freedom unlimited with no annual fee. how do you cashback? chase. make more of what's yours. detect this: living with hiv, craig learned he can stay undetectable with fewer medicines. that's why he switched to dovato. dovato is a complete hiv treatment for some adults. no other complete hiv pill uses fewer medicines
