i'm ari melber. let's get into the headlines. vice president kamala harris won the delegate votes to become the official democratic nominee for president, punching the nomination as expected, through the early virtual votes. the voting began today and she clenched. the dnc will make it fully official on monday because they will complete this virtual roll call vote. just as the 2020 boat shifted virtual during the pandemic, this cycle's shift for the democratic convention and assorted procedures has begun earlier. like early voting, this is a step democrats have taken and it has become somewhat normal. in this case, they want to be proactively organize and stave off any possible republican legal challenges overstate deadlines. even before harris jumped into the race, you heard people mention, they were planning to go forward with the delegate vote, they're doing it today. harris swift caps this woman convention tradition.

jovial emphasis on diversity of all kinds, complete with online rallies and zooms, where people have organized themselves or other groups have joined in with white men for here is, black men for hairs, white women for harris, so on. one piece of a wider and broad strategy that clearly worked and has elements that are so fast, it has been an organic rush to fund this nominee. the zooms that you see have raised a lot of money, trump raised by comparison, $137 million last month. today's new monthly report shows harris doubling that haul with a record $310 million. remember, you can see the july on the headline, this is for all of july, harris only formally entered the race the last 10 days of the month, when most of the big haul came in. july was supposed to be the rnc's big moment. conventions often draw wider interest and donations, trump tapped his new running mate this month.

vance, hulk, other prominent voices at the rnc could not keep up with harris. no one is saying the trump campaign overly fund raise the tragic events over his attempted assassination, that was also something in politics was in the days after a big unifying moment for the republicans. like i showed you, they raised money but nothing like harris. her whole includes 2 million first-time donors, an echo of bernie sanders online superpowers of fundraising. those are new democratic donors that will give again, every week or month if they want, nine out of 10 donations far into the legal matters, under 200 bucks in the case that you see from harris, she can go back to those people again and again through november. in modern politics, campaigns tend to measure support starting with the kind of inner core, the donors, the volunteers, these engaged online activists who carry the campaign managed -- message, show up to events, literal power. the ultimate outer layer is

your base voters, hear so much about debates. those people may not show up at a big rally like what harris held in rally but they do tend to vote in presidential years. the persuadable voters and sporadic or less engaged people we hear about, don't even call them voters because they often aren't. they may or may not vote at all this november, the people you hear about past as double haters or people that say, i don't have a reason to vote. this matters because over the days we are getting more information, more evidence. the harris campaign is seeing a surge of the core groups i mentioned, the inner core, including excited young people who are dancing their way into viral moments and people noticing them. they cannot upend this year's electorate by joining it, especially if they are of an age this is the first election they vote in, they can be powerful messengers online and in the field. that is something i want to break down tonight before i bring the great experts. democrats, as we end the week, are clearly now seeing it as a

real possibility they could bring back an obama level enthusiasm here. on a faster timeline than obama had, that is a marked contrast from the party's open concerns last month over joe biden and what had been a lot of indicators before the debate they did not have that level of enthusiasm. harris is also diving in and networking with pre-existing groups, some of them are not traditionally only political but they may involve overlapping interests like women's rights or female empowerment, taylor swift swiftie says agreed, swiftie's for harris that gained over 100,000 followers on social media. much of that organic, it launched as a thing that people can join last week. i took you about the beehive, the beyonce fans around the world, noticing beyonce signing off on harris using freedom in her first video, as i showed

earlier this week, these two strong women that have done a lot of different things and broken barriers have a pre- existing relationship, not a pre-existing condition like obamacare era, long-standing public alliance, if your beyonce fan, you might already know about the overlap. it is too early to tell if this kind of stuff that i'm mentioning and democrats are coming up, winning back states in november, the first two weeks suggest you have the diverse of young collision that launched obama to the white house. this idea or goal, this is not something of a secret strategy, obama was the democrats' last two-term president, more successful than president carter and wider margins of victory than president clinton before. any democrat to think about anything, i would like to be like obama. one difference is harris is poised to do it better, she is also a democrat who has been in the trenches. i want to point that out, for example, she talked of that goal in 2019 during her primary

specifically with plouffe and aides. and the white house director, jennifer palmieri. the campaign tried to do two things, emphasizing this, they are keeping all of the biden campaign leadership intact. they will be adding, not subtracting. harris made a point of attending that 2007 rally when obama first launched his presidential bid. it was a big deal, he was seen as a challenger to the more likely famous democratic party name, the summa encumbered of hillary clinton. you can see a photo that harris took from the facebook with both of the obamas. that was an event in illinois where this year's credit convention is being held. harris also hit the iowa caucus for obama and recounted the organizing, the fieldwork, and the weather in that effort. >> i remember being in iowa, it

life and politics, harris was engaging on the ground, early, in the field. that means she has a deeper primary experiential knowledge and texture for what the obama campaign was doing at the time. she can try to pair the inspiration of a barrier breaking candidate, you don't get people out in the cold for nothing, she might pair that with actual years long developed knowledge of the grassroots movement organizing that happened in that campaign and something i have told you about long before kamala harris jumped into the race in this topsy-turvy year, some of the more successful candidates these days, whether it is harris like the last two weeks, aoc came out of nowhere to beat a member of the democratic establishment, the third piece is something obama also had, a pretty modern, open-minded posture toward american culture and the internet, which helped obama leap past opponents before some of them knew what was happening. david plouffe was essential to

organizing that, messaging policy. while the past does not repeat itself exactly, harris is time to do a lot more with less time than obama. it is not the same playbook and if it were playbook, you would have to condense it down instead of whatever, four quarters of a football game, i don't know, the fourth quarter. here we are the first two weeks and her supporters, on some measures, doing so far exactly that, more, faster. breaking fundraising records from bernie to obama. it is not a secret that time was short, it was part of the conversation that any democrat heard during the difficult debates over president biden, whether he should stay or go. president obama returned the favor to kamala harris, he backed her every step of her career from san francisco d.a. to the democratic nomination. >> a dear, dear friend of mine so i want everybody to do right

1:15 pm
at the vp level, then about a week ago, this is the one, that might help you rebuild the obama coalition. you also need the voters. new voters, record 142,000 registered the first week of this harris campaign, most under 35 years old, uptake of voter registration in key states like virginia, massachusetts, and north carolina where republicans recently took out ads in estate democrats won once in the last 40 years, by guess who, barack obama. the inner core that i mentioned, over 170,000 new volunteers joining the campaign, that is different from voters because they could be in any given state into a lot of good work and help as far as that campaign is concerned. that is where the young activists who might be in a state fully red or blue are not going to swing their state might be key to raising money or traveling and helping the campaign, which has a lot to do in a hurry. harris has multiple links to obama, his approve, his movement organizing.
