tonight lead, total reset. >> right now, vice president kamala harris is in the thick of her own vp search. potential campaign and governing partner to be revealed any time between today and tuesday. and today, she met with three of the six candidates. governor tim walz, josh shapiro and senator mark kelly. as that decision looms, new reporting details just how much harris's candidacy had two weeks has reordered the presidential 2024 race and we encouraged democratic voters and donors as democratic candidates re-benefit down ballot on the other side donald

trump is off the road tonight after a week of escalating campaign attacks. mostly on the vice president identity but capped by last night's rally in atlanta where he also went after the governor of georgia for not illegally handing him the state four years ago. a big week ahead and we are covering all of it starting tonight with the vp search. let's start with emma barnett. she is invalid off you. in philadelphia. give us the latest decision about camila's running mate. >> reporter: revenant al sharpton , harris has until tuesday to make to be the most consequential decision of her political career. i want to run through what we do know. we know that vice president

harris had no public events scheduled this weekend. we know that at the observatory today, we have had people trying to see who is going in and out. get a glimpse of those three contenders you mentioned and about an hour ago at 4:02 p.m., the network was spotted eric holder walking into the vice presidential residence and he, of course, is in charge of the vetting process. and of course is familiar with harris's plans, she has already met with those three top contenders who, as you mentioned earlier, art minnesota governor tim walls, josh shapiro and arizona senator mark kelly. of course, this is a historically tight timeline for vice president harris to be making this consequential decision. here in philadelphia on tuesday, we are going to definitely see her with her running bait mate, whoever she

chooses, and after that they're going to barn storm the country hitting the key battleground states. her and her running mate will be holding rallies in michigan, wisconsin, north carolina, georgia and arizona. >> i also saw your reporting that the harris campaign announced a slew of endorsements from republicans. many of whom have been openly critical of former president donald trump. tell us about the campaign's outreach plan for republican voters. >> that's right, reverend. what we learn today is that dozens of publicans have endorsed vice president harris for president and some of those publicans also include x trump white house officials. what we are learning is that the harris campaign is flaunting these endorsements as part of a new initiative which they are calling republicans for harris and nearly 30 gop members are part of it and there are some names on this

list that your viewers may be familiar with including stephanie grisham who was the former white house press secretary under donald trump and olivia troy who was the national security advisor to vice president mike pence. what is really key for the harris campaign is targeting those voters who are undecided in order to help her win this race. a lot of the undecided voters also might be republicans which is why they are putting their eggs in this basket. reverend? >> all right, thank you nbc's campaign, emma barnett. joining me now is lisa from rochester. a democrat of delaware currently running for the u.s. senate. congresswoman, take you for joining us. the ticket will be introduced tuesday. nbc is reporting that today, she is meeting separately with governors tim walz, josh shapiro, and senator mark

kelly. what does she need from a running mate right now? and if she is successful in november, what will she need from them as a governing partner, in your view? >> first of all, it's good to be with you again, reverend al sharpton. i have to say that this is an exciting moment. the vice president -- i remember being on joe biden's committee. i was one of four. was one of the people i did outreach to and the goal of selecting a vice president which is going to be really, the first major and important decision a presidential candidate will make is to find someone qualified as someone who can run but also who can. that is the best. for joe biden, i remember his whole focus was that the focus also must be able on day one which kamala harris was and also in his words, simpatico.

somebody who could relate with him and at the end of the day, that is the person when we turn off the lights, that's who were talking to. she met all those requirements and i am so confident that she's going to pick the person who is super qualified but also meshes with her and will also present the best for the american people. this decision is a big one. the great thing about the democratic slate of candidates that she is looking at is that they are all qualified. they will all be tremendous acts to the ticket. >> last week, we buried the late, great texas congresswoman sheila jackson lee who lived to see her close friend kamala harris serve in the u.s. senate and become vice president but sadly, not the democratic nominee. there is also that you and

delaware and maryland, angela, also could break in november by becoming the first pair of black women to ever serve in our senate. your thoughts on the moment? >> first of all, reverend al sharpton, i want to thank you for how you saluted my colleague and friend sheila jackson lee. what a hero for texas as well as the country. she was such a champion for women. it's not lost on me and you that there has only been three black women in the united states and in the history of this country. carol moseley braun, vice president kamala harris, and now. number four and number five are coming. for me, and delaware it has been an honor to represent my state for the past eight years bringing clean drinking water, focusing on our health and making sure that we lower the cost of goods and bring good

jobs. the senate provides the opportunity for us to bring our professional experiences and our lived experiences and be able to work on things like reproductive freedom. as you know, my granddaughter, i became a grandmother last year. it is the best title i have ever gotten. i am going to fight for reproductive freedom for abortion care and contraception. i am also going to fight for voting rights and democracy. those are things that in the senate, we can do that. i am excited about my race. issues of maternal mortality, jobs, supply chains. people are interested in our campaign and want to know more about it, go to lisarochester.com. it is an exciting moment for delaware as well as we elect, for the first time, elect a black woman of the house and out of the senate. >> congratulations on becoming a grandma. i am a grandfather to one grandson and i know the feeling

that you cannot describe. the vice president campaign is in terms of fundraising in polling. but also momentum that is raised democrats morale in the historically short period of time. meanwhile, the trump campaign is reportedly struggling to find a campaign attack against harris that works. it has not restricted trump from using gender and race as he did at last week's convention. not exactly 8 winning general election strategy. is it too early to left shifted the democrats favor as harris connects and trump struggles to stay on or even find a message? >> reverend, i think the trump campaign is scrambling. that is really the word that i think of. they are trying to paint her in

different ways but the reality is she has a proven track record and she is talking about two different visions for this country. she has a vision for us moving forward, being united and he has a vision of project 25 where we are stripping our reproductive freedoms. we are gutting social security and medicare. we have a choice and i think for us, as we have seen a $310 million in july, alone, we have seen 40,000 new voters register in 48 hours. we saw 170,000 new volunteers. there is this energy and momentum but what i am saying to people is that while we were in a state of -- we were thinking where are we going to go next? we know how to move from worry to work to win. >> no trump repeatedly said he

would debate the vice president after she ended the race last month but yesterday appeared to drop out of a previously scheduled september 10th debate on the abc network with the format similar to his june debate against resident biden. instead, trump was on social media claiming he would agree to debate her one month from now on fox news network where there are moderators. trump says it is because of the litigation against abc. even though he had already agreed to this before, on the harris campaign. says he is scared to debate the vice president who will you debrusk the broadcast time whether he shows up or not. what do you think? >> initially, he said he would debate her anytime, anyplace. he would debate anybody anytime, anyplace. you know he has had a lot of

things to say about her. as the vice president said, say it to her face. she does not need to say i want to have this in my living room or somewhere that's comfortable for me. she will be able to prosecute the case against donald trump and for the american people. it is clear. for kamala harris, she has a real record to run on. the cost of insulin, working with the president to make sure that we are seen as united and we are there for our allies on the international stage. she has been able to work with us on so many issues that advance the american people and really, his focus has been on attacks and a vision. again, what you will see in a debate -- should he be not afraid to do it is a real split screen between someone who is competent, qualified, has

a welcome back to "politics nation." kamala harris is the 2024 democratic presidential nominee re-energized voters and donors have momentum into her campaign. harris raised $310 million in july. a tally that is more than double the amount raised by the republican campaign for former president donald trump. this will trump is struggling

against and identity and racially driven attacks that even his allies could backfire. joining me now is derrick johnson. president and ceo of the naacp. thank you for joining me today. let me start right there. naacp has and don't endorse candidates but we certainly deal with what is in the interest of people in this country. trumps racial attacks on camila seems no matter what side of the aisle you're on. >> how do you respond to these racial attacks that mr. trump as vice president kamala harris? >> we must taste stay focused on the policies between the candidates and not be distracted by attacks. you think about the national

association by journalists. the question was about the track record as relates to african-americans. his statement, his posture as opposed to answering the question. he went on a because he was not speaking to the. he was speaking to his megabase to say i can go into an attack. that is something that we should not tolerate under any circumstances. the real question of the choices we have on the ballot, which of these candidates will represent our best interest moving forward and not get distracted by the former president because the former president has demonstrated both in his statement in actions and his present but. >> now the naacp is targeting states that are engaging back voters. i know you have a new admission in terms of just getting people out to vote and energizing people because of what is at stake here. tell us about that.

>> it is important for us that we engage african american voters. once you contribute to whatever campaign, you also rose into the 20707. the world volunteer. african-americans, we have a lot at stake with the selected election and those in our household will be seeing a tremendous turnout of african- american voters. we seen a turnout in 2012 as well. we seen a tremendous turnout in 2020 and as a result of the turnouts, affordable care act passed where more have healthcare. we have seen student loan debt canceled for so many teachers across the country. we have seen insulins costs go

down. we have the authority. let's engage. text the number 20707 the word volunteer. >> you just laid out a lot of what is at stake for black americans and what the naacp is doing. do you think this sense of urgency is beginning to increase on the ground in the black community? >> over the last two weeks, a level has turned up. about 200 people in the. many individuals left for the. if everyone is asking how we can get involved in what we can do, and how important the selection is.. what happened over the three weeks as more people are talking about the public policy.

project 2025. many people are concerned. those who want to be involved in it is our job, mine, yours and all of the civil rights organization and social justice group in general. if it gives people a way to be involved so we can measure the impact and the impact can have in november. >> the issues and overall moving, one of the things that we've done in the organizations we talked about is we all work together. b raise issues, we tell people to get out the vote and we hold whoever wins accountable. it is not you giving a blank check to someone or if they claim to be with us as progress. this is an ongoing process which is why you have two get

people to vote and to hold people accountable that they voted for. >> that's right. think about it. you demanded in 2020 that we have regular meetings with the administration. we demanded that you have to do some of the student loans. you can't close racial wealth gap if you did address that ratio and the impact that student loans have on with the credit to debt ratio. and as a result of that, the last administration committed to having that looked more diverse than ever before and having. she created a mechanism to create more homer ships. to assure that the issue of student loan cancellation was impacted in that resorted in the to get into the narrow because homeownership is really

important to. you could not get that in. our job is to look at the public policies who improve quality of life of african-americans. if we do that well, we improve the quality of life for all of us. >> we are in the middle of the weekend and the end of the weekend now with kamala harris. the vice president is deciding a running mate and we are told we will know by tuesday but it could be any moment now. do you have any thoughts on the decision meaning either way? who is stronger, who is not as strong in the area of civil rights? >> in my personal, at the end of the day, you and i both want that will allow us to appreciate all what democracy has to offer and that we can completely engage and participate. that we don't have an individual who occupies the white house and with the running mate, they are speaking to and prevent my children,

your grandchildren from poorly participating citizens in this country. whatever decision is for the current vp. it is our job to ensure the quality of life african- americans can reflect the future of this nation and less like on a system of 1930s. >> i am out of time but i want to go back to one thing before i let you go. again, i am appreciative that you came on the show tonight. gave again what are the dangers of project 2025, which is the only real policy and how people can log on and work with the naacp on getting out the vote? >> project 2025 was substantially. the right to not only african- americans but the change in tax code in a way which would benefit and we would pay an unpaired share.

>> welcome back. let's check in on some of the headlines of the day. for that, i turned to my political channel. former congressman from florida and msnbc political analyst. doug jones, former senator and attorney from alabama. a distinguished for the center of america's progress. let's start with former president trump. pulling out of a scheduled debate against vice president harris on abc. he offered on fox news instead one month from today. posting on truth social "i will see her on september fourth or i will see her at all." writing it interesting how anytime, anyplace becomes one specific time, one specific

safe space. and that she hopes to see him for the original debate he agreed to. do you think were going to see on the same stage in november and who benefits most if harris says okay? let me start with you >> i don't think there's a benefit that donald trump. i think the benefit that kamala harris right now, stick with the agency debate and make them try to show up. the fact is knowing that he is just backing out of a debate because quite frankly, she will really take it to him. he does not want that. he wants a mega rally which is why he wants to and have a big, live audience. i don't think that will happen. i am not sure about. doesn't appear to be that he

wants to be on the same stage of it but that is kind of understandable at this point. i think he's going to be an they can only hurt even more if goes at abc. we need it debate. we need to see them on the same stage. in a regular debate for the truck campaign. >> david? >> a couple things. i thought the power dynamic was fairly interesting with donald trump trying to tell the vice president what was going to happen. vice president harris doesn't need to take any direction from donald trump. if she suggests let's do this on fox, we know what he's doing. he's trying to choose the moderators, choose the time, place, and of and say you come to me. vice president harris does not need to do that. response was correct. she would win a debate. was scared of vice president harris. does not want to go to the abc

debate but i think there's also something bigger. donald trump, since kamala became the nominee, is like a boxer who took a hit and is leveling. he is spiraling as a candidate. he is in a freefall. nothing is working for him. he is incoherent. not even energizing and speaking of persuadable voters. working in 24 and he knows it and he's scared. >> seemed to be rattled. there is one prosecutor you will have to see alvin bragg. at a rally in atlanta last night, trump renewed his attack on georgia republicans. he considers disloyal especially governor brian kemp. >> your governor, camp is doing everything possible to make 2024 difficult for republicans to win. what are they doing?

>> they got a little something in mind. it's very bad for the republican party. >> what are they doing? maybe they are following the but trump also falsely claimed in 2020 and said kemp could have killed the election interference case with a phone call but he didn't want to because he is a bad guy. your u.s. attorney, what you make of all of this? a phone call that and the results of an investigation into grand jury? >> i tell you. it is just amazing to watch donald trump go into georgia and say those kind of things. when he did the same thing in 2020 and it cost of the election for two united states senators. there is clearly evidence that

shows it cost the election when he went in there and only complained about what happened in november and did not help. it is really stunning. the really interesting thing for me to watch on this is brian kemp's reaction. when is enough enough? brian kemp simply says i cannot do this anymore with this religion candidate. i don't like kamala harris but i'm not going to vote for her. i'm going to sit out here because i cannot take summer mcdonough from coming into my state and telling us how to run our republic and party. it is stunning the way that they will not stand up to donald trump and georgia and so many other states. >> that lean into it to play the race card. on social media and the rally last night. does this really help or does it backfire >> it backfires because he has to win a general election and

as much as they will work on the issue of race is not yet finished in this country. it has made great progress. there are not enough people in this country willing to listen to donald trump's specific dog whistles and in this particular race, it is just attorneys played too many times. if anything, it makes him look incoherent and old and evil and out of touch. i think that is why you saw vice president choose exactly the right methods which is she wants to take the nation forward. this is about the country we can. that disparity is hereto enough voters. this is why vice president harris has all the momentum right now and donald trump is in a lot of trouble. whoever comes out on top of to be by the side tuesday night in philadelphia when she gets off a tour of seven swing states. do you gentlemen want to guess

on who the vp will be and why it is important? >> here is the way i put it. if you think about it, you can justify any of these potential candidates. if you don't overthink it, josh shapiro. everything goes through salina and this november. it is the florida of 20 years ago. yourself five days ago in the november race. you want josh shapiro winning pennsylvania for you? i think it's a pretty easy choice at this point but obviously, there's democratic politics involved. >> i don't think that it's an easier choice. i think that there is such strength in the six vote and as i have said, the vice president has got to pick someone that she is comfortable with that can help potentially win the election but will also be at

her side for four years. it is an issue of do no harm. we want to make sure somebody is there to do this at the end of the day. but i think david is absolutely right. what you are saying is those are representative of the strength of a democratic party and that exists today and in the future. that is not only for november but for future elections in the midterms and in 2028. >> finally, what can canada do to, after all those, are still on the trends. >> would you repeat that for me? they were talking to us. i did not hear the whole question. >> at this point, people that are still on the fence after all of this, what can whoever the candidate is, what can they

do after all of this to attract voters that are still on the fence right now? >> i think that they can just get back in out on the road. they need to get. we need to understand and see who they need to talk to. i think they need to promote the policy that the biden- harris administration. i think they need to really. this is a historic election for a lot of reasons. >> the first woman president of the united states. >> i think that if they can get in and make sure that they not only promote those but also show the contrast, the contrast with not just donald trump but with jd vance, he is the only candidate that i can remember for vice president who has come out of it convention upside down and favorable ratings. as governor tim walz says all of the things that he says and

has said in the past. the contrast between these candidates is going to be dramatic. willing to sell it to the american people in swing states, the better. >> david? >> i think the persuadable voters is where vice president harris has the most room to grow her coalition. donald trump has a feeling. we've seen it. can't win the popular vote. with vice president harris, it's fascinating. did not inherit the biting coalition. she inherited a lot of it. 90% or so. she picked up his new part of the coalition that i didn't have. the enthusiastic voters of color, the young voters. all of these voters that are coming to the vice president. what is probably right there within reach but as yet you catalyze within her coalition are the persuadable voters that found themselves with democrats and in 18 and 20 and 22.

devante mitchell, a 43-year-old black man who died after he was pinned to the ground by hotel security guards in milwaukee in june was ruled a homicide by county medical examiner's. family has said they believe he was suffering from a mental health episode in was under the influence of drugs when he went into the hotel. he allegedly appeared frantic and attended to hide in the lobby. security guards then began to drag him out of the hotel. pin face down on the concrete until police arrived. according to the investigation and video, the video shows mitchell crying for help and apologizing as the guards appear to be holding him down. police and emergency responders tried to revive him but he died at the scene. prosecutors investigating the
