welcome back to "the weekend." brand-new details president biden's reshaped role of the democratic national convention now that he is no longer at the top of the ticket. the president spending this weekend at camp david, fine- tuning a speech he is set to deliver on monday. that is day one of the dnc convention in chicago. multiple say that it will outline the stakes of this election. he will focus on donald trump's threat to american democracy and at the same time he will build the case for his vice president, kamala harris. biden is, quote, please debt the momentum behind the campaign. joining me now is allison gill and latifah simon. go ahead. she is worked for vice president harris when she was

san francisco district attorney. welcome to you both. >> what you think it is at the need to hear? >> i think is a lot of the same. it is like the oval office address and he is passing the torch wants to step aside. that is one of the most patriotic things i have seen a president in my lifetime do. to show that they will pass the torch and she will continue the last three and half years of work at the biden administration has been so successful at. >> it is a book and. she is a continuation of the legacy of president obama and president biden and she's her own person and this is generationally a turning of the pages. she's one month shy of being gen x. and very much is a new generation coming to power. >> coming to power on the national and international stage, but, lateefah simon knows because you worked with the vice president when she

was the first woman elected district attorney in san francisco and elected with the attorney general before the united states senate. lateefah, i've been struck with the stories and people who are like kamala harris would have to -- she's not saying a but the people the stories are saying up at you run away from the biden agenda. she's a sitting vice president of the united states as though she does not understand the stakes of this election. as though she has not worked intimately with joe biden for what is -- joe biden will be recorded as one of the great presidents when the history of our country is written. he will be recorded as one of the greatest's presidents. break it down for me. >> i watched -- good morning, symone, by the way. watching some of the coverage as they are laying out who they
6:04 am
think kamala harris is, you too have worked for her. she is clear and loyal to the american people and as someone who was raised by a working single mother, there is not a.that she is not going to.and a t that is not going to be crossed as it is related to the working class of the united states of america. i am clear, as a mother myself, as a single mother, that my children, under a kamala harris administration, will get the right to choose and i have two daughters and i'm also clear, symone, my youngest daughter, who her father died of cancer when she was 3 years old, in a kamala harris and ministration, we will not see the taking of the social safety net of social security. children of dead parents, the elderly and disabled, will have a social safety net in a harris administration. i am clear and i hope the american public can come along with us and be clear as well.
6:05 am
>> to both of the points made so far, there is a legitimacy, if you will, allison, of this idea of people finding out who harris is and the connection that she has to the president. notwithstanding her earlier service as attorney general. there is also the fact that she has to define herself and there will be, and i think people should not pretend otherwise, some important separation between her and joe biden. because she is her own person and she does have her own idea of how she wants to govern as president of the united states. there is going to be that. we have sourcing on the dnc from biden officials that have been saying noting, quote, four years ago america was reeling from a once in a century

pandemic. today, we are a global engine of growth, our alliances are strong, violent crime rate is at a 50 are low, border crossings are lower than with the previous ministration left office, and we are making progress on the issues americans care about. was important to note is that a lot of them believe that the convention will continue to highlight the biden/harris record, okay? when does the harris record start? >> i think that you made a really great point, alicia, when you said yes, and. they are going on a huge bus tour and setting out 3200 different events through surrogates across the country to highlight her new economic plan, for example. i think that pulls her away a little bit from biden but continues the ideas that he started. like 100 million people will get the taxes cut. biden was, we are going to tax the wealthy and she said, yes, and, we are going to cut taxes on 100 million americans that are middle-class. were going to build 3 million housing units and rental you
6:07 am
units we can lower the cost of housing and biden was like we will give you $10,000 for it down payment. kamala harris administration will give you $25,000 for your down payment to help ease the burdens. i think she's taking this a step further and when she goes out and does this to her about her economic plan, i think she's doing a milwaukee event during the dnc, she will be highlighting those differences. yes, and we've done this and this is where were going to take it further. >> a not think it is a difference, i think it is building on. she is the vice president of the deficits of america. should also go to work with joe biden every day. he is continued to say he is not yet done. it is building with distinction. >> i get that but when i'm trying to say is, with respect to the biden portion of that, there are a lot of people in the country who had a problem with the biden portion of that
6:08 am
so i am just saying -- >> did they? >> time of the economy. >> i -- here's the thing. some people are so complaining about gas prices. >> lateefah, correct me if i'm wrong. i'm often wrong because the chairman is often right. >> i'm not disagreeing with the approach. i like the yes, and, approach. olives exit narratively speaking, it is a rhetorical thing and a tricky space for her to be in because the convention is going to be touting the biden/harris. now give me some of the harris juice because there are some issues that people still have with the biden portion of that. people think that the economy is not as strong as we know it is. >> but to be clear, i don't think that is an issue with the biden portion of that. >> i'm saying with the american people. >> the american people are saying that they do not like where the economy is right now. the understand the gdp and everything but they feel the squeeze on the pricing and the other pieces. when it was the biden campaign,
6:09 am
i don't think they talked enough about that portion so -- >> that might be the problem. >> that's the issue. for people to say they had issues with the biden economic policies, don't think they did. i thought prescription drug stuff, joe biden did that. i think folks need to be very specific for people try -- before there is a rewriting of what actually went down. >> lateefah trying to jump in. all headed over to her. >> i love listening to you. what is exciting to me, and again, i am a superdelegate and was a superdelegate going in and biden was going with the top of the ticket. i am a super superdelegate knowing that my present vice president harris is going to be our nominee. is our nominee.

she is a democrat. it is clear that she understands not only what is at stake, but what they have been trying to accomplish for the last four years. i have to tell you as someone who has worked with her as you have as well, vice president harris is myopic in her understanding of what real people go through every single day. we worked in the district attorney's office fighting to get kids off the streets. she did something other disk attorneys offices never did. looked at each individual young person coming through the system and try to create a plan. for so many of these young people, this was over 20 years ago, it was the day care and it was the dental care. i have no doubt that, as she continues to roll out this economic vision of america, she will not only implement it, but will look back five or 10 years from now and we will be able to say a swath of america, the materials, conditions in which they live and are better because of the policies that she's going to roll out. you know that again, kamala

harris wants things to happen and she gets a team around her and pushes them to make it happen. i am excited. >> and she talks were going after price gouging is what she's doing is leaning into her autobiography which that is a use of law enforcement that we would not ordinarily think of but she's going to need congress in order to do a lot of the things. that is the biggest challenge and what it is that she is ruling out but it speaks to what she has already done. we will talk about that after the break. allison gill, lateefah simon. thank you. tomorrow will be joined by jaime harrison on the eve of the democratic national convention. after the break, another vfd for president biden. medicare drug price cuts that will save seniors billions of dollars. we are watching "the weekend" on msnbc. introducing kardiamobile 6l, the fda-cleared ekg that provides six-times more heart data than any smartwatch.

>> i'm really excited to be in the arena on monday night for president biden because the gratitude that you will see from the convention goers for what he has done and by the way, he did it with the thinnest majorities in congress. even where the vice president had to live at the senate and just a very thin majority in the house to be that consequential. >> and the fact that he was able to bring republicans, despite all of the machinations from the freedom caucus, donald trump hovering over them like jabba the hutt, you had this president able to create a deal that comes to the point that the chips act was done and every structure was done. he got inflation reduction. it is going to be quite a moment, i think, for the country to watch in that hall, and how people respond.
6:22 am
>> it is telling to the as we have kamala harris on the stump talking about the economy and the best donald trump can come to to push back is that she's a very strong communist and you'll be thrown into a communist system. you would be thrown into a system where everybody gets healthcare. everybody's going to get healthcare. don't think there are going to be that many americans who are sad about that. >> give me healthcare. i don't want healthcare. >> excellent point. of course, when we look at joe biden, healthcare, use a key person in obamacare, the affordable care act when he was with vice president obama. over the last 20 years, nobody has fought harder to help people lower prescription drugs, tell people in need, too

and to have a then president, now former president, denigrate that, but more importantly, to have his running mate, who himself is a member of that service, who wore that uniform, who stood next to those men and women who served with him, many of whom he knows and knew would go off and be harmed or killed, to stand there and to give credence and justification to that excuse making on behalf of donald trump, shame on you. you dishonor the uniform that you wore and that, to me, when you listen to a gold star family memberthat crap from vance and trump, we are shocked by it because that is

just not who we are as a nation. we would never. we have never, in the 230 years of this country's history, done that until the last seven years or so. >> the medal. ever many people trying to excuse what donald trump said or explain away what he said about the medal of honor and to be very clear, what he said is that the one, the other one is better and do you even understand what the medal of honor is? it is a military's highest honor and it has been given out since 1863. there have been 40 million people who have served in the united states armed forces. of the 40 million, a little over 3500 have ever received this honor. they get it for acts of valor. if you look up in the dictionary says it is honor plus dignity.

just the profound disrespect that a former president could have for the military service members. a president serves as the commander in chief of the u.s. armed forces with the stroke of a pen and a word, they could send our mothers and our fathers and their children and brothers and sisters off to war. putting their lives in danger. he does not even understand the sacrifice. >> that would require understanding honor and dignity. stick around. we have more of "the weekend" after this. ay obsession and we got you now with verizon, get nfl sunday ticket from youtube tv on us... and a great deal on galaxy z fold6... for a total value of twelve hundred and fifty dollars. only on verizon.
