10:01 am
a very good day to all of you from msnbc world headquarters in new york. welcome everyone to alex witt reports, breaking news, live pictures at the johnson space center, that is in houston, and also a major development expected on these guys, the two astronauts that are stuck in space, nasa is set to deliver the final decision on how to bring butch wilmore and sonny williams back home from the international space station. they've been there since june 5th on what was supposed to be a roughly 8 day mission. let's get right to merissa, what is the latest from there? i know we have this news conference, do we have a plan? >> that is the big question that hopefully might be answered within the hour. potentially any minute now. i'm listening to the press conference in one year and i've got you in the other air so i will let you know as you as i'm hearing things but the big question is when and how are butch wilmore and sonny williams coming back down from
10:02 am
the space station, they've been up there for, we are going on 80 days now and counting, this was supposed to be a weeklong nation and it has gotten delayed because of several reasons, helium leaks, issues and questions about the thrusters and that is what is used to propel this and maneuver this craft through space, so the big question on the safety and that is the bottom line, we know that's been the messaging from nasa from the very beginning, on how this decision will be made and there has not been a consensus because there's two main possibilities and we are waiting to find out which one, are the astronauts coming home the way they went up, are they going back down to earth on the boeings star liner, or, are they going back down to earth by hitching a ride on boeing's rival, spacex, so there's a crew nine, this is supposed to launch sometime within the month and that is gotten delayed because of what's been happening with the star liner and when the crew nine launches, potentially, there could be two seats waiting for butch and suni, they are not
10:03 am
supposed to return to earth until february, so that means if that is what nasa decides and announces today, then butch and suni would not be coming home until february, far extending the original mission date. to a couple of things to think about of course there's the optics, there's the boeing meme and faith and trust in the company of course that on the line but bottom line, the messaging from nasa has been the safety aspect of this because what's most important here of course, are the safety and lives of these two astronauts, so that is probably a big reason why boeing has not been present at the most recent press conferences and today at the press conference that we are waiting to start, the head of nasa, bill nelson -- before the press conference, for all we know it might be happening as we speak but alex, something
10:04 am
that's been interesting is the timing here, they said they had time, they wanted to look at the data, they wanted to analyze as much as they could, they talk to scientists and it ground testing from the western part of the united states to really get a sense of what is the safest option. and they wanted to reach a consensus, alex. but at the most recent press conference, they said time is running out to reach a consensus, we prefer a consensus because it increases the likelihood of the safest possible decision but at a certain point, they said we are running out of time to reach a consensus and the time apparently is this weekend and apparently within the hour, so we will be here to find out what the decision is. >> okay my multitasking friend. thank you for saying all that and butch and suni, they have been pretty good-natured about this whole thing, they are conducting experiments , but

southern georgia in particular, as you noted, she will end on thursday, this will be a wednesday and thursday bus tour that will end in savannah, georgia, and i think really if you look at the part of georgia she will be going to, southern georgia, it is clear that the vice president and her campaign are targeting the large population of black voters in that part of the state in particular. there's one county in southern georgia that represents the second largest black population in the state. the campaign noted with the store, they are targeting rural voters, suburban and urban voters and i want you to hear a little bit from the deputy campaign manager on this network talking about the plan for the campaign, going forward in this final stretch leading into the election, listen. >> the campaign has been building and infrastructure apparatus for months, in the battleground states to make sure that we are talking to the voters who are going to decide this election on infrastructure that is leaps and bounds of love donald trump. we will see them hit the ground

who is now paralyzed, that's according to the un and the w.h.o. partially paralyzed, so now they are calling on both sides to agree to a temporary cease- fire to a humanitarian pause, to allow for a vaccination campaign that would allow 1 million children in gaza to receive two doses of the polio vaccine. >> it is all heartbreaking but nonetheless, i thank you for bringing the story to us. next, donald trump's armor white house press secretary, she spoke at the dnc. why it was so important to highlight what happened on january 6th. january 6th. at's a good boy, leo! my moderate to severe crohn's symptoms kept me out of the picture. with skyrizi, feel significant symptom relief at 4 weeks. many people were in remission at 12 weeks, 1 year, and even at 2 years. serious allergic reactions and an increased risk of infections or a lower ability to fight them may occur. tell your doctor if you have an infection or symptoms,

i have seen violence while serving in iraq but nothing, nothing prepared me for january 6th. we were beaten and blinded. i was assaulted with a poll, attached to the american flag, president trump summoned our attackers and sided with them. he betrayed us. >> on january 6th, i asked melania if we could at least tweet that while peaceful protest is the right of every american, there's no plate for lawlessness, or violence and she replied with one word, no. >> the dnc took on a sobering

town this week as a former capital police officer shared details of how he was personally attacked by rioters. while a former trump white house press secretary recounted what she experienced on january 6th. stephanie grisham is joining me now. stephanie, this is not your first time speaking out but it certainly was on a platform you probably never anticipated. why was it important for you to not just because the convention but to highlight january 6th? >> well you are right, that was something i never thought i would do in my life and i also hate public speaking so it was a big step for me but i knew that it would be impactful. i knew that going along with some of the other republicans for harris, and talking about you know, who we know, in trump and what we saw, it was really important. i knew it would get attention and i think that it hopefully gave some people you know, if commission structure maybe not to step out, i don't know that

more people will step out more publicly but behind the privacy of the voting booth, to vote for her, for hope and change and a more positive country. i think that people recognize that we don't have to all agree on policy issues. we can disagree on that but the trump way of everything is dark, only he can fix it and constantly being hit over the head with how horrible our country is, it's just not the path forward as kamala said so well in her speech. >> there were a few republicans who joined you, let's watch some of that. here it is. >> trump made a lot of lofty promises, unlimited economic growth, american manufacturing reborn, a secure border. turns out, donald trump was all talk. he wanted our votes, but he couldn't deliver a thing. >> if republicans are being
10:55 am
intellectually honest with ourselves, our party is not civil or conservative, it's chaotic and crazy and the only thing left to do is dump trump. >> so, to my fellow republicans, you are voting for a democrat, you are voting for democracy. you aren't betraying our party, you're standing up for our country. >> all combined. it's all powerful. i'm curious about the feedback that you are getting from republicans ? mark >> shockingly, i haven't had the greatest feedback from many republicans but i have had some support, absolutely. i've had a good amount of my friends and family who have said that they back me and they are proud of the decision i made. i think that her speech,
10:56 am
anybody who watched it would agree that it was full of hope. i think it was vitally important that she said she would be present to all americans regardless of party. i think that was absolutely, i didn't know she was going to say that and when she said that, i really felt that not only was she telling the truth but that, we had hope for our country for the first time in a long time. so i think her speech was amazing and impactful. i think governor walz is incredible. as you know, i live in the midwest now. and he is absolutely everything , that i know my brother-in-law to be and my father to be, which is, you know, the regular man, i love that he's a coach, you know, even seeing how much their families love each other is a big change, so i think it's just a breath of fresh air and i don't think that takes away from policy, policy is important but i think that giving our country a chance to be civil again is more important right now. >> to that end, not

surprisingly, to user phrase, donald trump reacted angrily, he called into fox after the vp harris acceptance speech and the host had to eventually cut his ramblings off. he fired off a ridiculous number of posts, look, you know him, how is he looking at this past week, was he spooked? >> he was angry, i guarantee that he is saying you know, the media is of course only covering her and her crowds. i guarantee that he is saying that the people around him aren't doing a good job, i think he is blaming everyone around him. and i saw some of the rants that he had on social media which were nuts to me but he is trying to distract, the former president bill clinton said the same thing.
10:58 am
he is trying to distract and get the media attention to go back to him and if he has to do it in a negative way, that's how he does it. >> he was in arizona yesterday, reacting to former president obama's joke during his dnc address and we've all heard it and it's not the first time obama has roasted trump but this one had to hurt extra, you think? >> i think, absolutely. i again, i wasn't expecting that when he did it, and i laughed and chuckled. i think that he is absolutely going to continue that, as president obama or michelle obama or even oprah, you know, i'm sure that got to his ego and angered him, and i'm sure he's going to go after them as he will go after anybody. it doesn't matter. but i think the more important message, also came from oprah winfrey, the fact that she said
10:59 am
we need to be a country again where if somebody down the road, your neighbor needs help, we don't ask about the politics first, we just go help them. i think that message was more important and i hope that we can all kind of stick to it, your former guest said everything just right, we've got to keep fighting, this will be a close race. i do believe we are underdogs. i was actually there when we won in 2016 and we went into it thinking we probably weren't going to win and hillary had that huge convention space ready for a party and look how it went. so i think it's important to remember 2016 and stay focused on what she is trying to say rather than you know, the silliness that he's trying to say. >> it was the javits center with that glass ceiling. trump promoted melania's new upcoming book, there you go, that's a look at the cover, it does not list a co-author, what do you think is in it? >> pictures, pictures and you know, some small captions. i doubt it'll be anything, they might bill it as her opening up but it's just not who she is.
11:00 am
she's a very private person i doubt that there's a bunch of scandal in there. she's not going to talk about things that went wrong, if i had to guess, it'll be a picture book and it'll be captions. and there might be some pictures from her childhood, i think i read something there but i doubt that there's going to be a whole lot of reading associated with that book. that . wh y do, tide's got you covered. —looking good, man. —learned it from you! it's got to be tide. hi! need new glasses? buy one pair, get one free at visionworks! how can you see me squinting? i can't! i'm just telling everyone!...hey! buy one pair, get one free for back to school. visionworks. see the difference. missing out on the things you love because of asthma? get back to better breathing with fasenra, an add-on treatment for eosinophilic asthma that is taken once every 8 weeks. fasenra is not for sudden breathing problems or other eosinophilic conditions.
