5:00 pm
on this new hour of ayman, donald trump's thursday night tirade wasn't the only unhinged attempt at dnc counterprogramming. right wing media tried to
5:01 pm
detract from democrat success in chicago. the keyword of course is tried. plus, kamala harris gave three interviews this week but you probably did not see them if you are not on tiktok. a georgia influencer joins us. maga attempted to go undercover at the dnc and j.d. vance attempted to be normal, resulting in a tossup for worst of the week. i am ayman mohyeldin. let's do it. it is safe to say that trump and the republicans had a bad week. as vice president kamala harris made history thursday as the first woman of color to accept the democratic nomination, trump as you can imagine was a rage posting on his failed social media site during her speech, with each post more random and desperate in the past. one even asked where hunter biden was, while another tried to denigrate the football coaching credentials of
5:02 pm
minnesota governor tim walz. it was as if trump was actively trying to make the point harris was actually making about him. >> in many ways, donald trump is an unserious man. but the consequences, but the consequences of putting donald trump back in the white house are extremely serious. >> and that was one jab too far for the thin-skinned trump. moments later he could not help himself. he called into fox news where he did, what else, but to rant and rave until he was actually bumped off the air by the hosts. watch. >> sir. >> she has a horrible, horrible person to run this country. >> what is your strategy to rebuild the momentum that you had with those voters? >> no, she's not having success. i'm having success. it is only in your eyes that
5:03 pm
they have that. they threw joe biden out of the party. >> we saw a different night tonight. thank you very much, sir. stay right there. a live edition of gut feld is coming up. >> trump bumped from fox. who would have thought this day would actually come. the news that will no doubt sting the ratings. vp harris's acceptance speech out drew his viewership. it was an embarrassing defeat for trump and his allies who spent the last week trying to counter program, using the same racist, boring, played out attack on former president obama. >> he's definitely going to interfere in this election. that is why we will be sending johnny to hawaii to get the truth about the birth certificate. this time we will dig deep and find out what really happened. >> the racism back on full display at fox.
5:04 pm
someone needs to tell jesse waters it is 2024, not 2011. as republicans got more desperate they moved onto baselessly suggesting tim walz may be compromised by china because he and his wife honeymooned there back in 1994. >> has the fbi investigated tim walz's connections to china and has china been grooming tim walz? >> while we are trying to find out exactly what the fbi has on tim walz with respect to china. >> i guess we are looking forward to another classic james comey fishing expedition, but from that same fox host came a conspiracy theory this week, citing a friend's wife. yes, a friend's wife. hundreds of immigrants were being illegally registered to vote after obtaining drivers licenses in texas. it was such an off-the-wall, baseless claim that the texas
5:05 pm
department of public safety had to debunk it, calling her claims kind of racist and simply false. i think they are a little bit more than kind of racist. when asked for a comment, a fox spokesperson defended her saying she was citing a source and never said she confirmed the story. it's the same song and dance we've seen from republicans when they are backed into a corner. they pivot to racism, desperate smears, conspiracy theories. it is not working nor erasing the reality that the momentum and, yes, the enthusiasm is now clearly with democrats. my panel is here to break it all down. msnbc daily writer and editor. and the president of media matters. great to have you with us. i don't even know where to begin. that was a lot, right? we had to watch a lot of right wing media to distill this hate, this racism, this punditry if you will, but what do you make of this?
5:06 pm
from criticizing tim walz as an assistant coach and not a head coach, to suggesting that because he went on his honeymoon to china that somehow he is being groomed by china for this role, to the racism about president obama and everything in between. >> so we have the racists which we have seen before, but what is concerning to me as we know on fox news and these networks they will keep repeating lies, so than the supporters and i would say their cult members will then all of a sudden say, you know, tim walz actually did go to china. he is being recruited by china. then these larger conspiracy theories. we had pizza gait, but people still believe in these things. the thing that donald trump throws out for his base, they are going down a really dangerous rabbit hole. you hear people say i lost my parents to fox news and it is happening to a large segment of the american populace. so with -- so it makes the work
5:07 pm
of democrats that much harder. a particular segment of the democratic party needs to move beyond patting themselves on the back loading and going and talking and deprogramming their family members and loved ones to say just think about that. do you really think in 1994 that a football coach and a teacher is being recruited by the chinese government? you know, just help them see how ridiculous it sounds. it doesn't matter if barack obama was born in hawaii or not. his mother is an american. guess what? that makes him an american. that makes kamala harris an american even though she has two immigrant parents. it is laughable in a sense but it is actually quite dangerous. >> and it should not be dismissed. >> it shouldn't be because we know they will keep doing it. >> that was one of the moments at the dnc, michelle obama warming us -- warning us. she knew this moment would happen and it actually happened
5:08 pm
before the dnc was over. >> absolutely and i agree with your earlier point. this is them going back to what has become the comfort zone. they are going into the well of things they want to toss out and hope that the base will latch onto to distract from the fact that the policy proposals they have put out are deeply unpopular. the personal attacks that trump is making against harris and walls are not landing. they have nowhere left to go between those things. if they can't talk substance and they don't want trump to go on the attack and make belligerent statements against his opponents, what, then, do they have left to fall back on? that is how you get to the point where you have fox news hosts just kind of repeating things they might've seen or heard on facebook, on air to their viewers and presenting that as a truth and fox news coming back and saying, well, she didn't confirm the story. that is wild. i think it is fascinating to
5:09 pm
really, when you sit and think about that in particular and we will probably talk more about this in a second. how little critical thinking was involved before repeating that idea. >> to your point i want to bring that up for angela. you and your colleagues have been looking into covering this insane voter fraud conspiracy that was thrown out completely unverified and probably deliberately. i think she knew what she was doing. she is hiding behind or foxes hiding behind the fact that it was not confirmed, but you have texas attorney general ken paxton launching an investigation on her report even though texas officials debunked it. they now have this report. launch an investigation and now it enters the lexicon of the gop for the next 70 plus days. >> that's right and that is what happens. instead of citing this report, we get to talk about it as an investigation.
5:10 pm
so it is laundering conspiracy theories through these channels. the same thing happened in georgia with the stuff they pushed recently. there are these conspiracy theories that 14% of noncitizens in georgia were going to vote. it was this information online and that made its way to more formal channels. that is the part that is really insidious. the chaos we are seeing in a lot of ways is a reflection of the fact there is no center of gravity right now. it is worth noting that this is the first election in 30 years where rush limbaugh is not the largest get out the vote operation in the country and the effects of that are felt every day in the chaos you see in the larger right-wing media. they don't know what to echo. they are a chorus without a conductor. the stuff that is really concerning is exactly what maria bartiromo did, because it is not simply existing in the right-wing media, as you noted. then you have these officials
5:11 pm
that are willing to dig it up and wrap it in a veneer of legitimacy and given the power on the fringes it should be a real cause of concern because it gives incentives to all of these extremists. >> let me ask about another aspect of this coverage and that was something you've been tracking at media matters, something that fox did. they did not show a single minute of any of the republicans who spoke at the dnc and there were notable names. people in trump's inner circle, like stephanie grisham at one point. geoff duncan. olivia troy. adam kinzinger. they have all endorsed harris, condemned trump. not a single minute of their speeches or addresses televised to the republican base through fox at all. >> and that is really consistent. let's not forget they are also the one that had the scoop that mike pence wasn't going to be endorsing donald trump. this was a while ago and even though they broke the news they only gave it a you seconds of coverage on the network. even though it was an explosive story at the time.
5:12 pm
part of their strategy is to not only amplify and pull up from the dregs of the internet these conspiracies and theories and really push the election being stolen narrative, but also what you just said. what they are covering and what they are not covering and they are not going to cover anything that will give a permission structure to a bunch of their audience that is likely to potentially be willing to vote not for donald trump and that is what they are doing. they are suppressing that part of the information stream and it matters given the filter bubble that their audiences in. >> another shameful counterprogramming that came from, i would say a wide swath of right-wing and conservative members of the republican party. people going after second gentleman doug emhoff's daughter and tim walz's son. we have these on the screen. all right commentator charlie kirk posting and saying, totally not weird. and tim walz's 17-year-old son, gus, who has a nonverbal learning disorder was mocked by ann coulter and after he was
5:13 pm
seen emotionally applauding his father on the stage. >> there is no bottom to these people and i think that is what we are seeing more and more and the exhaustion i think that a lot of americans feel that the republican party is bringing out the worst in their supporters and sometimes the worst in all americans. there is this fight going back to when michelle obama said if they go low, we go high. what do you mean you're talking about tim walz's son? again, this is backfiring. none of the policies are popular with the vast majority of americans, but there are a lot of families, not just democrats, who have neurodivergent children. there are a lot of families with children with tattoos who choose to move away from home and live full and fulfilling lives. especially when it comes to tim walz's son. children have always been pretty much off limits as much as possible. we had the years where the
5:14 pm
obama girls were targeted by fox news. we had chelsea clinton oftentimes mocked. listen, i went through my awkward stage as a preteen and teenager and unfortunately she had to do it in front of the american public. we saw a little bit of a disgraceful type of behavior from the republican party. this is beyond the pale and especially with tim walz's son who has shown such pride in his father. to have the and coulters of the world trying to denigrate them says a lot about the party and i think there is a small faction of republicans who don't want to be identified with that type of politics. >> my goal in life is, as a father, to have my son cheer me on like tim walz's son. that would be a life well lived. thank you so much. stick around, we have a lot more to discuss. after this break, young influencers inside the dnc have a massive audience. we will talk about that.

i've ever seen order donuts, i have two give it to mike lindell. just because i find it so funny. >> you did not fall for the inspector gadget look? >> i did not. it's funny because he was not alone. there were multiple conservative weirdos trying to be in disguise. one, no one will recognize you who is normal. if someone does recognize you, they will see through your disguise. they know who you are. i don't know what you are trying to accomplish with this. going to gender-neutral bathrooms and it looks like there is no urinal. how well any man survive in this wasteland? what? >> i agree, fully. because he says this is a debate over good and evil and i think so many of donald trump's supporters do feel like the world is upside down. because people are able to live freely or there is more diversity. but i will throw my hat in for j.d. vance. i am a little bit older than
5:46 pm
hayes, but there is a show called small wonder. who goes into a donut shop and says whatever makes sense? you have children at home. think about ways you can make a human connection with a voter. >> it looks like he walked into that donut shop for the first time in his life. >> in the history of donut shops. >> this is a sidebar, but can i give props to the lady working behind the counter? it was like i am j.d. vance, running for vice president. she was like okay, what kind of donuts? she was like i don't want to be part of this dog and pony show. let me do this real quick, because you have to compare j.d. vance with tim walz. check this out. tim walz made a stop at a restaurant in nebraska. watch how that went. >> we came and did a little rally on the side. if you don't know, the iconic
5:47 pm
nebraska restaurant is runza. don't call it anything else by runza. the bread consistency matters. the swiss and mushroom is a classic. you can be a little bit creative, but this is it. if you're going to go to nebraska, if you're going to go to a nebraska football game. if you're just going to get days to be a good person, stop at runza. >> that is a person who knows what a runza sandwiches. i'm pretty sure the google search spiked after that. >> you can get a little creative. he makes people feel good. he makes people feel good about having people like him in the country. >> the thing is, this is where you put the joking aside. the authenticity between these men speaks to a larger issue. j.d. vance basically built in some sort of conservative lab, going
5:48 pm
into the donut shop and having zero empathy and zero related ability and then you have tim walz being authentic. >> it is palpable. >> exactly. don't go anywhere. we have another bonus round after this. a january 6 gala, insurrectionists going for the gold at bedminster. we will tell you about it. it. . t-mobile connects 100,000 delta airlines employees. powers tractor supply stores nationwide with reliable 5g business internet. and helps red bull revolutionize coverage of live events. this is how business goes further with t-mobile for business.

we are back with our bonus round of worst of the weekend
5:52 pm
this one goes to donald trump. the dates this week we found out he will be hosting an award ceremony dedicated to the insurrectionists. he is billing himself as the main speaker along with his indicted codefendant, rudy giuliani. a flyer says prices range from $2500 for a single vip ticket the $30,000 for a table of 12. the so-called unforgettable evening is thrown by a nonprofit that supports those charged in the capitol riot. yes you cannot make this up. my panel is back with me, and this does not get any more clear to this country that donald trump is fully behind the january 6 insurrection. you have to be pro january 6 to be in trump world. >> i have two questions about this situation. one is, is rudy giuliani getting paid for this event?
5:53 pm
he really needs to get paid for this event. the man needs a lot of money. the other question i have is whose idea was it to hold this right before the debate? right before kamala harris will be standing next to him for a good 90 minutes, hitting him on january 6. you want this to be the thing they are focused on? that is a horrible strategy if you want when anyone even considering not voting for you. >> do you think his campaign thinks it is smart? saying mister president you will get hit hard on the january 6 stuff. you are still facing charges in connection with it. maybe not a good idea to have this five days before the debate with a former prosecutor who just made the case for a week straight with every other member of the dnc that you are a threat to our democracy. now you are literally celebrating those who are a threat to our democracy. >> i'm not sure if any sycophants around him have the courage to even try to lay something like that out.
5:54 pm
maybe people have tiptoed into, maybe we should not do this and focus on debate prep. no, i've got it. she's not smart, so i'm fine. maybe since she said kamala harris for the people and was district attorney and attorney general of the largest state in the nation. we might want to step away from this. i think it goes back to her previous segments. his bread and butter supporters, people who will make him feel great will be in that room. people who will essentially lift him up to give him the courage and energy to go into that debate, will be in that room. i think that is what he focuses on. >> let's not forget this is at bedminster. it is at his resort, so he is making money. strategy aside, he is thinking i can make a buck off the -- off of this. someone said we should have a gala -- >> and how much money can i make off of it? $30,000 for a table of 12, i'm
5:55 pm
sure he is making a nice coin off of that. for a guy accused of being weird and he is weird and his campaign is weird as we saw with that. what does he do? he gets the endorsement of rfk jr. because that is as weird as it gets. this is a guy who allegedly threw a bear -- >> he said on camera that he threw a dead bear cub into central park. that happened. >> because he had to run to an event and did not have time to expose -- to dispose of it. >> there is a segment of the population that these individuals who really like some of the fringe things rfk jr. talked about. he is an anti-vaxxer. claimant policies are odd and he also doesn't believe in science in a lot of ways. he will pick up a small segment of the population. i think there might be a lot of fall off, but he likes to be on the front page of the papers. saying i have a kennedy. now it is an off brand kennedy,
5:56 pm
but he has a kennedy nonetheless. >> the funniest thing about this is rfk jr.'s campaign was tanking. a lot of people who would consider voting for him moved because biden dropped out. they were like i don't want a third-party candidate anymore. the other thing is kennedy said he would stay on the ballot in some states and encourage people to vote for him. how is this an endorsement? it is the funniest thing. this is what trump gets for it. a weirdo in his camp who will not bring him that many votes and may draw votes away from him still. he said he is only doing it in swing states and going to stay on the ballot in others, but it is still very funny that he can draw down trump's margins still. >> we have an official tinfoil hat party with trump and rfk jr. joining forces to try to win this election. god help us all. christina greer, hayes brown, always a pleasure. make sure to come back tomorrow night. i will be speaking to the
