attacks leading to fears of a wider conflict in the region and fears of derailing a cease- fire and hostage release deal in gaza and you will hear from the parents of one of those hostages. plus republicans preparing to lose and resorting to trickery to challenger vote and while jd vance tries to clean up the doublespeak on abortion, christian activists have a plan to attack ivf weather trump like that are not. let's do it. republicans are in a full state of panic with each passing day showing poll after poll vice president harris ahead nationally 49 percent to 46 percent and harris managing the lead in swing states like michigan and wisconsin while narrowing his lead in georgia. we do know what he leans on when faced with that polling. >> the primary focus is not to get out the vote because we
8:02 pm
have all the votes we need and they will cheat like hell to win the election. >> the republicans are listening and building a pathway to challenge a potential harris victory. here the election board approved a new rule that could throw the states vote count into chaos this fall providing an additional revenue for election officials to delay certification of results should they choose to. as propublica reports, rule was secretly pushed by the board which consists of pro trump election deniers and before it was approved last week by the board the nationally prominent conservative activists reportedly spoke in support of the rule including a representative from the heritage foundation. this threat to democracy isn't exclusive to georgia and over and wisconsin a texas-based group teamed up with sympathetic sheriff's to
8:03 pm
monitor polling locations and drop boxes and they are known for peddling false claims of voter fraud in 2020. the cofounders of the program is mainly focused in wisconsin but we do have a scalable program. trump is also getting help from a key ally ahead of the american conservative group and the organizer of the cpac conference. last week they said they sent a letter to officials in arizona, and wisconsin laying out plans to monitor ballot drop boxes. and in the letter the georgia secretary of state and the attorney general there said failure to do so risks that the results of the november elections will be questioned by those who didn't support the winning candidate and in case it isn't obvious, republicans are partying like it's 2020 and trumps efforts to overturn the election failed despite all of his efforts including that infamous phone call to the georgia secretary of state to find more votes. let's not forget the attempted
8:04 pm
coup on our capital. since then the trump denialism has only ramped up and he spent his time out of office trimming his supporters for a loss in november and last time long the key figures are not here like mike pence and trump's allies are no doubt watching and ready to act. with and how he praised members of george's election board earlier this month. >> the georgia state election board is in a very positive thing and they are doing a great job, janice johnson, rick jeffries and janel king, three people are all pit bulls fighting for honesty, transparency and victory. they are fighting. >> joining me now is the fulton county and it is great to have

both of you with this. talk about this georgia election board because it really went undedo anything abo it that we saw in the clip trump referred to the board members as his pit bulls. what do we know about them?'s how far are they willing to go for him now that he has nationalized them and platformed them by calling them out as we saw on that clip? >> reporter: the state election board is an administrative body of on elected officials and they are able to set rules for an election but they are limited in their ability to set those rules and that they have to be consistent with the georgia statutes and ones passed by the general assembly as well as the georgia case law. we did recently have an interesting change within the state election board. it used to be controlled by a mix of democrat and more moderate republicans, people
8:06 pm
who have policy positions around elections that are more akin to brad raffensperger the secretary of state of georgia who famously was on the phone call when the subject of many of trump's attacks in 2020. recent the in the spring, there were changes to that board so we now have three trump backed and trump praised election board members who have taken steps in recent weeks to change some of these election rules in ways that are consistent with policy positions that trump and the mag affiliates have wanted to move in terms of their election integrity efforts. >> walk us through the chaos that something like this could create for the election if vice president harris does win in georgia and then we push to delay certifying the vote? what is that sense of chaos doing to the outcome? >> reporter: that is really what they could do is chaos. they are trying to lay things
8:07 pm
and so doubts in the minds of georgians and americans that there is ballot fraud and there hoping eventually to cause congress to jump in and overturn the election. this is their plan. the way we know this is that as you and anna pointed out, you did see that rally where trump called out the three members of the board who were on his side and one of them was there at the rally taking a bow, living it up and it doesn't sound like nonpartisan fair objective election officials to me. their whole intent is to help donald trump. the good news is the final say is really up to the governor and the secretary of state and they have proven that they have no talk of election shenanigans but these local officials are empowered to delay matters. that could throw a wrench in
8:08 pm
the plans to get certification in on time. >> according to the washington post, the georgia election board has signaled, as i understand it, plans to adopt nearly a dozen additional rules in coming weeks despite the warnings from state and local officials that the lateness of the calendar in which they are trying to do all of this all but guarantees confusion and mistakes. it is the point in all of this, to create and so this confusion, part of that strategy? >> reporter: i do think that is part of the strategy and i would point out that some of the recent rule changes use incredibly vague or ambiguous terms and they create confusion and that they seem to be inconsistent with georgia statutes and they seem to invite litigation. i think it is likely we could see some litigation around the recent rule changes related to
8:09 pm
certification as well as the rule changes that relate to the tabulation of votes. one of the more concerning rule changes we have recently seen is a rule change in which it is stated that is a local elections board finds fraud in an investigation of the precinct returns, then they must find a just method of tabulating those votes. people and sources i have talked to close to the matter in the past week and have indicated that the opponents of this rule think that gives local election officials the ability to potentially disregard those votes if they believe there has been fraud within the precinct returns. it is concerning because it isn't just a delay of certification like david was
8:10 pm
talking about, but it is fully disregarding and changing tabulation of the votes which isn't at all consistent with what the georgia courts have said is the duty of local officials when they are certifying the election results and they have a very limited discretion to just look at mathematical errors and tabulate the votes. they don't have the ability to make qualitative decisions about whether or not there has been election fraud. that is for the courts to decide. >> let's talk about that group true the vote and it seems like they are teaming up with sheriff's and swing states as we mentioned like wisconsin and elsewhere to monitor polling locations and drop boxes. from a legal point of view, where is the line when it comes to voter intimidation.
8:11 pm
it is one thing to monitor elections and we generally have a robust system where candidates and their parties are allowed to do that but another thing to shop around for sympathetic organizations to be outside on the streets seeing people as they cast their ballots. >> reporter: yes. it will take strong leadership from local and state election officials to avoid shenanigans by true the vote. that is a texas-based group. they have tried to cast out elections in various states and they tried to do so in georgia in the last election. they filed suit against brad raffensperger and they said they had evidence where there was fraud in a judge did something amazing, compelled through the vote to turn over the evidence and guess what, they were lies and they were phonies and when it comes down to it, they are a hollow shell of themselves and they have a lot of show a no go. they can do damage if they have a sympathetic election official on their side which is why it is important who the secretaries of states are in
8:12 pm
swing states and the governors. fortunately, it looks like in a swing states the secretaries of the states and the election officials at the top that add power, they are there to protect elections rather than prevent people from voting. >> the reason trump failed overturn in 2020 was because we had proper guardrails to block him and perhaps even mike pence had that moment of clarity and sanity do not overturn the election and you had officials assessing the threat at an event and their greatest worry according to the washington post was the possibility of civil unrest even if efforts to subvert election results failed and an army of angry trump supporters could resort to violence just as they did at the u.s. capitol on january six of 2021. if that is true, i am curious based on officials you have spoken to across the atlanta metro area and maybe even on the state level, are they at all concerned about the possibility of unrest given what happened in 2020 -- excuse
8:13 pm
me, 2021 in this scenario we find ourselves in and you are if you do and if you don't? >> election officials are very much concerned about the possibility of unrest and potential violence but keep in mind it isn't just on january sick that there were examples of civil unrest and violence but also in the wake of the 2020 elections that there were precincts that had demonstrators go to the precincts with threats of violence at various election places. i recently saw a presentation at an election security conference by officials in arizona in maricopa county who talked about security perimeter they had to include in the precinct because of what happened in 2020 with pro trump demonstrators showing up at the polling place and threatening violence. certainly, this is something that election officials are concerned about and gearing up

to protect election security both within the polling place and then also from individuals who may be bringing violence. >> we will talk to a little bit later on in the show. right after this break we are switching gears. i will speak to the parents of a hostage being held since october seven and there plea to the white house in tel aviv to get their son back. son back . i'd rather work on saving for retirement. or college, since you like to get schooled. that's a pretty good burn, right? he -- -

8:20 pm
optimistic and even in this terrible incident from this morning in the middle east, we are taking some optimism which is, unfortunately in this region, sometimes the way things work it is just when things are heating up that they then calm down. we have talked about it and we heard other people talk about it. in this inflamed region right now, there is one thing that can singularly most calm down the entire region. that one thing is to do a deal to release the hostages and bring some calm to gaza, which, in turn, will bring calm to the rest of the region. we are teetering right now and on the precipice. we are so hopeful that the leaders of this region and really are all in the hands of two men. those two men need to decide that for the good of their people and the good of the region and i would argue for the good of the world right
8:21 pm

of all of us, the people of israel, which is to say we are all traumatized on the seventh of october and anybody in the region we went through a stressful period for 324 days and as you mentioned, i think for all of us to be able to move on and get to the rehabilitation we need to move forward, it is clear and the people of israel are speaking loudly and clearly and poles that -- polls that we need it for our unity international resilience and it's what the people of our country are calling for. through the crystal lens i would say this to the prime minister, and i have talked about this in the past. the prime minister is the son of a historian and he himself as a history buff. i think he very well understands that right now there is a moment and he is at a fork in the road.
8:23 pm
he could be the prime minister whose last significant work is, unfortunately having been the prime minister on that tragic day on october seven or he can be the prime minister who took that tragedy, turned it around, brought people home, and rebuilt the resilience of the israeli people and strengthened them moving forward. i know he gets that and i believe that is very much the legacy that he wants to build for himself and i thought we might be all right and saying that. >> i know you have met with vice president harris and president biden several times since the beginning of the war and you exercised in your dnc speech that the administration is working tirelessly to reach a cease-fire deal. you believe the united states should be exerting more leverage over all the parties in the region to bring their sides to a deal since it does seem up until now both yahya

sinwar and the prime minister are reaching a deal on their own and do you think they should use more leverage, the united states to actually communicate for a deal with hamas directly? >> i certainly think now is the time that somebody has the power to influence these two parties, now is the time. we do know just unfortunately a few days ago that six more hostages were retrieved and their bodies were retrieved and autopsies were performed and it is known that these were six men taken alive, who were alive for several months who died in captivity in horrible circumstances. there is no time to spare. there is no leverage to spare. i do believe that president biden is desperately,

believe that it begins at a different point and many christians don't hold the view that life begins at conception and even those who do don't hold the view that that view should be imposed on everybody else. we do have separation of church and state in this country and we have this idea that we shouldn't have religious coercion including these laws. i think a huge wake up call for me and so many other people was the decision from the alabama supreme court in february were the chief justice of the alabama supreme court in his concurring opinion used the bible and theologians as legal support clearly trying to impose christianity and christian doctrine as the law of the land for the people of alabama and the chief justice of the supreme court is not the chief theologian of the people

of alabama and we saw a swift outcry about that decision and pushback from people of all faiths including christians. >> you bring up an important point with a reference to the alabama supreme court ruling because it does lead me to ask about whether or not those types of decisions, this broader effort to basically perhaps ban ivf, will it reach the level of the abortion debate in this country? will it become a factor in the way people vote and the ability to organize and mobilize around this issue? >> i think these ivf rulings and statements from places like the southern baptist convention make sure there are a lot of unexpected and unintended consequences in a post-roe world and we see majorities of americans who are deeply concerned about women's health and abortion bans and without exceptions and about the status

of reproductive freedom in this country. i do think that we are correct to be alert to these other incursions to people who are really driving this antiabortion movement would make on women's health and reproductive freedom. also on religious freedom and this fetal personhood movement has only just begun. i think we can see from the reporting and the tactics they are using that they know this is deeply unpopular and they know this is not democratic and the majorities of americans would reject these ideas. so they are using other tactics including through the courts to try to impose their theological view on everybody else to the detriment of everybody's health and safety. >> amanda tyler, i do appreciate your joining us this evening and sharing your insights with an important conversation and ones we should
