. . thank you very much for watching, remember you can
9:01 pm
catch me and more saturday and sunday mornings on our show "the weekend" from all of our colleagues across the networks of nbc news, thank you very much for staying up late. i will see you at the end of tomorrow. t the end of tomorrow. . this . this is what it looks like when a candidate for president makes the most of a rainy day, watch. >> thank you. thank you. thank you. ladies and gentlemen i'm sorry it is raining, but we had 12 years of trickle down if you will give me 12 minutes we can change this country. i am tired of seeing the american people kill themselves every day. >> all right, that was a soaking wet bill clinton during
9:02 pm
a drizzly campaign stop in 1992. clinton was campaigning that day in a small town of albany, georgia part of a bus tour which n which the campaign called bubbas for bill. it was notable at the time because southern georgia was known to be rural and conservative than the states northern region that includes atlanta and the metro areas around it. that swing through southern georgia helped bill clinton win the state by just over half a percentage point. that would end up being the last time a democratic presidential candidate won this state of georgia until 28 years later when joe biden took that very same state by under a quarter of a percentage point. that 1992 campaign was also the last time a democratic presidential ticket campaigned in southern georgia. until today. when vice president harris and her runningmate, tim walz made
9:03 pm
their own pilgrimage to bubba country. visited a small high school, met with a marching band, stopped in at a local bbq pit before holding a rally in savannah tomorrow. just a few months ago, georgia appeared out of reach for democrats this cycle. since kamala harris took her place at the top of the ticket, georgia has rapidly moved back into play for democrats the harris campaign is hoping by boosting support from black and working class rural voters they can actually build a winning coalition to take the state. that is what the harris-walz campaign is doing, they are reaching out to new voters, as they should be, from parts of georgia that don't typically vote for democrats, that is how they try to convince them to vote for them. contrast them with that to what republicans are trying to do to win the state of georgia. for weeks now, the georgia republican party has been mirrored in scandal over the actions of three election
9:04 pm
voters and trump officials. those three trump pro officials are giving new power to local officials to block the certification of election results over allegations of fraud. normally allegations of fraud are handled by the courts where they should be. but, we saw this in 2020 when trump led efforts to challenge the election results were shot down by federal and state judges across the court. all over the country. but, under the georgia election boards new rules, local pro trump officials could delay and even refuse to certify election results under the pretext of investigating voting irregularities. throwing the entire election into chaos. a lawsuit is underway to try to block those new georgia election rules. the group of georgia democratic lawmakers are urging the state's republican governor to open an ethic's investigation
9:05 pm
into those pro-trump election board members. georgia's republican member kemp is looking into when or not he has the authority -- weather or not he has the authority to open it up. we will speak to one of them speaking in just a bit. for now, they try to reach new voters in georgia republicans appear to be trying to win the state by working the referees. of course, the question now is, what will it all mean come . it is now front and center for democrats, a path to victory that runs through georgia. how significant is it that you have this two day bus tour going through southeast georgia just 68 days until the election. we are not talking about atlanta or metro atlanta area. rural southern georgia. >> yeah. you are a georgia native, i am
9:06 pm
a georgia native. we know the risk is not getting outside of atlanta there year. that is where a lot of the voters she will need for this winning coalition are. 159 counties in georgia. and for democrats, getting outside of atlanta is unusual just as for republicans going to atlanta is unusual. republicans are in play across the rest of the state. you know, vice president harris is showing she is willing to work for these people's vote. she was at a high school, she was at the savannah ?m(conventi center. at the bbq, connecting with folks down in the state and talking to them about the issues that matter to them. not just about affordability and opportunity but also, you know, issues like rural health care, issues like the mortality rate that we know in south georgia is an issue. issue like gun violence and paid family leave. this is the message that can resinate not just with conservative white women a lot of whom are in this part of the
9:07 pm
state. black people are also living in rural parts of the country. they certainly live in rural georgia and they vote, especially in presidential elections. so, you know, going down there and making a play for those voters may not be something that is typical for democrats but let me remind people, there is the plan that folks like stacy abrams built and others like black voters matter. while it did not work for stacy for getting her to the governor's mansion it worked to elect two senators and democratic president in 2020. they are betting that strategy might be something that works again in november. >> it is an important point that you bring up. it reminds me a little bit how people view elections. it can be short sided everyone thinks about it as wins versus losses. you have a strait go. this harris-walz campaign attracting voters outside of metro atlanta. i will read to you what a georgia gop said about it.
9:08 pm
we see them putting resources in forsyth county and heavy republican counties, some republicans are sort of confused why they are wasting this money. they are not trying to win forsight county forsyth county. but in some counties if you can reduce the margin in which he may win or carry a county you have a better shot in the other counties or districts where you have larger margins. >> that is exactly it. look, it is not in play for democrats. i think i don't have to tell you that, but it is not a democratic strong hold for folks who may not be watching for folks who are not familiar with the county and its history. cutting into the margins, getting some number or fewer folks to vote republican in that county would, technically it is a win. we are talking about a state that president biden won by
9:09 pm
12,000 votes as we famously remember in 2020. so, this is not about, you know, winning every county but about making inrodes, especially in some of the republican strong holds where people may be open to, you know, the kind of message that vice president harris and governor walz are communicating and taking that message to places like south georgia where people are also concerned about the economy, about democracy, about voting rights and, and reproductive rights. just because those people are not necessarily kind of in the target rich areas that democrats are used to does not mean they can not be part of a winning coalition for this part of the campaign >> let's talk about the messaging here. harris-walz campaign pivoting the message. all about joy. a sense of optimism and sense of looking forward. it also has focused on the struggles of working class people. what does vice president harris
9:10 pm
need to be talking about on the tour in georgia in these areas as her campaign interacts with voters in the state? >> yeah, again, this is, part of the state where people are still concerned about the price of groceries, they are concerned about the price of gas. this is a place where people were dying during covid, and also, very eager to get back to work, right? and so, that, that is something that the governor tapped into and was able to really get bipartisan appeal for his leadership because he was somebody who they felt like was responsive during the pandemic. so, really, a lot of the voters can be open on and around the issues. cobconservative right wing. and here harris has been in terms of talking about abortion, voting and freedom of
9:11 pm
democracy and what it looks like. we will see them hammers the message. particularly in georgia to which is very familiar and, and it is remembering the way that the state is targeted after 2020 with the big lie. even throw we know georgia had a safe and free and fair election not once, not twice but three times. so the idea that the message of freedom can be something that resinates in this part of the state and also the message of affordability i happening is something that will be important, not just south georgians but the middle class americans that can be hearing the message and seeing what she is doing down there. >> joy, freedom, affordability, a powerful trio of words there. eerin thank you. >> on the opposite side, let's talk about the republicans and what they are doing. joining me now, filing an ethic
9:12 pm
complaint against the trump- approved members of the state election board that passed new and confusing election rules less than three months before election day. parks, thank you very much for being here. i will start with your complaint. you allege members of the board have illegally collaborating with the chair of the republican party. last night rolling stones reported one of the members was also getting input from a member of the election board who is also an election denier. give me your reaction to that and to the fact that president trump at a campaign rally literally thanked the three of them for their work. not too long ago, a couple days ago.. >> reporter: look, our state election board has been taken over by maga republicans election deniers who are trying to pass new rules to obstruct the certification. as youd, donald trump is
9:13 pm
calling them out at the rallies saying they are pit bulls for democracy. one of them was looking for a job with the trump administration. it is very clear here that these trump-aligned election board member presidency are trying to cause doubt and chaos in our election system if trump does not win georgia, once again, like he didn't in 2020. >> of course the pressure is building, the story is getting more traction, you have the secretary of state releasing a statement which reads activists seeking to impose last minute changes in election procedures outside of the legislature process undermined confidence and burden election workers. georgia house democrats are asking the speaker to replace his appointee to the board and governor kemp says he is checking with the attorney general to see if he can replace those members. how quickly do you expect a
9:14 pm
response? what is the likelihood that some of these, even though they are republican officials take up this issue and address it forcefully. chaos is part of the objective of what they want to happen. >> absolutely. look, the republican state , second of state said this election board is a mess. you have the attorney general who said that the meeting they had on july 12th which violated the open meetings act was illegal. they are doing everything they can to sobvert our democracy. he has the right to look into it. he is passing the buck to his ag but he has the authority to execute a hearing. that being saturday in twenty12 the georgia supreme court -- that being said in 2012 the georgia supreme court has the means to remove a board member.
9:15 pm
the state election was created by georgia statue. he can go ahead and do it now. he is deciding to delay this to pass the buck to the ag. he is headlining fundraisers for trump. we both should be able to agree anyone who runs for office in georgia should be able to win their election fair and square. >> are we seeing it anywhere else? >> i am worried. after trump did not win in 2020 they lost their minds, they started passing local laws at the state legislature to take bipartisan election boards that have been historically bipartisan and made them majority republican. it has been death by 1,000 cuts. this, these rules they are their grand finale, implementing mass chaos and confusion to our election system because republicans can
9:16 pm
not win on policy they are trying to cheat once again. >> state senator, thank you for joining me tonight, greatly appreciate it as always. >> thank you for having me. we have a lot more for you on tonight's show, including another state in the south that may be up for grabs by the harris-walz campaign. a look at trump and vance's troubling embrace of rfk, jr, that is coming up next jr, that is coming up next

9:21 pm
the story of how he had a brain worm. you should know now not only is he on trump's presidential transition team but trump and his runningmate j.d. vance think there could be more room for him in a trump administration. >> i think he add to a lot -- if we win. he has very interesting ideas and good ideas, i think he will be a fantastic and influential person in tomorrows of getting this country back on track. >> i hope rfk has a role. i think he is a smart guy, fundamentally a good guy and i am glad to have him on the team. >> trump/vance ticket is fighting allegations they are weird but is this the way to change that impression by bringing rfk into the mix? joining me now is tim miller. writer at large at the baller.
9:22 pm
forgive the metaphor here what do you think? >> it is the whale one that gets me. i don't know, i think about it, the minivan and the juice, any way. i don't, i don't get it. look, i get it i guess for short term political purposes. i think that a lot of the kind of soft art, the double haters kamala harris will gobel them up over the last month and it explains a lot of her poll movement, really. the remaining rfk voters were trump and conspiracy and antiestablishment, you think getting the endorsement can bring some of those folks on board. but, i don't understand is going to the next step of saying that rfk will play a co role in the next administration. that rfk told tucker he is one of the leaders on the transition team if he wins which is scary. that i think has the ability to
9:23 pm
turn off a lot of voters you were talking about in hains in hae nirks z that he -- in the rural area, you are looking at the group, vance that does not care about ukraine and weird rfk with the brain worm and the vaccine conspiracies and it is tulsi, and what are they, they are not offering anything to that voter. so, i do think that is a political risk in addition to being the brand risk of just being weird. >> i will ask, let me ask you about tulsi. the other wild card he add to this in a different way. not the conspiracy way but as you said really doubling down on this kind of pro-russia messaging of the modern republican party under trump, rfk strangely enough endorsed bernie sanders. after that, a lot of talk about
9:24 pm
the sanders/trump voter, this working class white guy. voter that voted for bernie in the primary and trump in the general election ,does that voter still exist in 2024? >> reporter: we call them trump voters now, you are not gaining anything for people who voted for trump twice. there are some, you see them out there on the internet. they are very on line, posting on reddit but they are a handful of these people. they are way, way, way more, you know, romney-voting republicans, millions, that don't like donald trump. there are not clearly enough to take over the republican party, a huge minority in the republican party but in a general election as a swing voter population there are so many more of those than this weird other side of the
9:25 pm
horseshoe conspiracy, anti-vax pro-putin voter. fewer of those. so, i think, i don't understand. trump is offering nothing to the haley voter. haley has gone along with it because of her own ambition which i think is morally impulsive. harris ticket, on themes, patriotism, and standing with nato and foreign policy i think that kamala harris was offering more at her convention to that haley voter than this rfk/trump/three headed monster is. >> you still have jd vance speaking of weird who is attached to this. i want to play you this recently unearthed clip of him speaking to a christian group about education, back in 2021. watch. >> so many ever the leaders of the left, i hate to be so personal about this, people without kids trying to brainwash the minds of our

our democracy. >> let's talk about how you get people involved right now. obviously you have a budget of $10 million, how much are you hoping to raise to be able to fight back against these election challenges? last time we were talking about maybe 60 different cases across the country. this time it may be even more if donald trump loses. how are you trying to get ordinary folks involved in this effort? >> yeah it will take all of us, right? it will take a village as hillary clinton said to fight this stuff. it is not just money it is education, the work you are doing, talking about these things, covering things like what is happening in georgia, not a lot of people are covering this stuff. we will talk about this as well and highlighting stories from the ground up. i think part of there is just building a grass roots movement of people who understand what is happening and can talk about it. and push back on it. so, money is great but really it has to be at the grass- roots, we will work closely

overnight, the overnight, the israeli military launched deadly airstrikes and rates across several areas in the occupied west bank, killing at least 10 people, according to palestinian health authorities. since the start of the war in gaza over 10 months ago, israel has conducted daily rate in the occupied west bank. this current ongoing military operation would be the largest. today's, israel's foreign minister says this is they were in every sense," as he compared

the situation in the west bank to what is happening in gaza, where over 40,000 people have been killed. the west bank raids, and tensions rise through the region. israel and let hezbollah exchanged the heaviest cross- border attacks since october 7th. iran has yet to act since vowing vengeance last month. me is palestinian american middle east analyst and a member of the national policy counsel for the arab american institute, it is good to have you on the show. sad it is for these reasons. the west bank raids come two weeks after the united states approved an additional $20 billion in arms sales to israel. what do you make of this military operation and escalation we are seeing in the occupied west bank? >> i think it just for context, which is really important, it is important to remember that israel's occupation of the west bank is illegal under international law. israel does not belong in the west bank at all. yet for decades now, they have been on this project of
9:56 pm
expansion and land take over and ethnically cleansing palestinians and pushing them into smaller and smaller areas of the west bank. this has been going on for a long time. at this point, israel saw an opportunity, given the intention of the entire world being focused on gaza, to escalate further in the west bank. when you talk about the west bank, we have seen more than 650 palestinians have been killed since october 2 this day. under normal circumstances, this would be a massive crisis that would grab the entire world's attention. it is only in the shadow of far greater horrors and more than 40,000 palestinians being killed in gaza as the spawn under the radar, israel has gotten away with it. naturally, this is creating some resistance as this of violence always does and now israel is increasing its military operations, operating under the false premise that they have been diluted with for a long time that you can somehow pummel augustinians into submission. if you kill more, still a little more and torture and

imprison and besiege. this is a recipe for further and further violence. we need the opposite of this. we need the world to restrain israel. that is the recipe to a better future. >> what do you expect will come from this literary operation? what is the likelihood it might ask the, as you mentioned or suggested, inflame tensions in the west bank and ricocheted throughout the region? if israel feels so emboldened by what it has done in gaza without any consequence, what is to stop them from continuing to do even worse in the west bank? >> i think you are right, we are on the road to further escalation. israel has in there has been no material consequences. their image in the international community has taken a significant hit, given the scale of the atrocities they have committed. as long as they have u.s. backing in terms of military

funding, i think they are happy to proceed to take as much time and land as they have and behave the way they are. the possibility for a significant escalation, whether in the west bank or another uprising could break out, whether it is the potential for a regional warm with lebanon and iran, as long as we are on this path, is also increasing day by day. the obvious solution to all this in the immediate present is to get a cease-fire in gaza, to have an end to this onslaught. that would instantly diffuse regional tensions, especially with lebanon and iran and from there, we can start working toward much more to start dealing with the fundamental problem that has led us to this point in the first place, which is the fact that abyssinians have been living under israeli control without any rights for decades and that is a recipe that is going to lead to endless violence, as it has over and over again. there is a fundamental, people talk about it as if it is a slogan. no justice, no peace. it is a description of basic human nature. in any situation in which there is long-lasting injustice, that peace cannot follow. this is going to lead to conflict. people interested in resolving
9:59 pm
conflict have to look at the underlying causes and work toward justice and equality and human rights for all. that is how we actually move the ball in a better direction than the path we are currently on. >> ask you about the cease- fire. negotiations to end the war are ongoing. it is really unclear if there even is an agreement that is possible at this point. the bombings continue in gaza. disease is now rampant in gaza. less than two weeks ago, a 10- month-old baby was confirmed to have polio, the first in case inside the strip in 25 years i believe. did you think a cease-fire deal, as it stands, is possible? what do you think it will actually take to end this war? >> the obvious impediment to a cease-fire is the fact that benjamin netanyahu is not interested in ending this war. this has been clear over and over again . even though hamas has been relatively recalcitrant, they have buckled and agreed to a cease-fire in which they release all the hostages, even agreeing to a temporary cease-fire and it is
10:00 pm
benjamin netanyahu who has found every reason possible to say no to that particular deal . the problem, of course, behind that is to say what is allowing benjamin netanyahu to behave the way he currently is? the reason why he is continuing this war is for purely personal reasons. he's worried about his legacy and his political career. if he allows this war to end without any kind of resolution. the question is, how many more palestinian children have to be killed before the u.s. says enough is enough and start using its leverage? in this case, the obvious leverage, to get benjamin netanyahu to start respecting international law and human rights and looking out for even what american policy preferences are, is to pull the military funding or threaten it in a meaningful way. one thing i want to say real quick is that if american politicians psalm daily video briefings of the suffering of the people in gaza and the children who are being killed they in and day out, they would
