9:05 am
needed to be consequences for illegally crossing the border. so, that is one of the remaining questions but you laid out some of the interview, and the harris campaign said, that it went extremely well, in their view, that she did what she needed to do and she answer the tough questions about her record and also one other point, ryan, she was asked about that that isn't getting too much attention but it showed another side of her, during the dnc acceptance speech, you are number that she avoided talking about the historical nature of her candidacy but there was that emotional moment with her great nieces, that were there, present at the convention and of course that iconic photo of one of them, you see her right there, looking up at the vice president as she was delivering that speech, harris was asked about that during this interview yesterday. take a listen to what she said. >> it's the back of her head and the two little braids, and then i'm in the front, obviously speaking, and it's very humbling. it's very humbling in many ways

9:08 am
in florida, sparking backlash from some parts of his base, that are concerned that he is going to far to the left on the abortion issue. so, it's a tough line to walk for the former president and an issue where he really has been trying to push the republican party in a different direction. some parts of the base, they don't want to go there. >> definitely the second part, the questioning to him, causing a lot of concern among the most conservative parts of the republican base. ashley, now reproductive rights, absolutely going to be an issue when harris and trump debate for the first time on september 10th. the harris team says that they are still pushing to have hot mike throughout the entire debate. harris's plan for the debate is to keep calm but get under trump's skin, what more do we know about that part of their plans? >> one thing that is a little ironic of course, is that the harris campaign and the trump campaigns are now taking opposite sides of the hot mic
9:09 am
issue . but the view within the harris camp, which may prove to be correct is something like hot mic's would benefit her because it would remind voters one of the things they don't like about trump, which is that he can come across especially when faced with a woman and a woman of color, as bullying, and aggressive, and sometimes rambling and unhinged and chaotic, and that is something that you see in a hot mic's where as a muted mic sometimes can protect trump from his own worst instincts. so that's what the harris team wants, they say there are still negotiations ongoing and they also point to trump's own comments where he has said , i don't care and they are trying to create at least in the public, this appearance that trump is fine with hot mic's,

9:11 am
or than anyone, talk to me a little more about what the trump campaign is saying about this incident? >> yeah, ryan, i followed up on that and i said, but your campaign put it out on their official tiktok and he claimed to have no knowledge of that, but i think one of the reasons this story continues to have legs is because of his history of comments that have been offensive to some military families whether it was calling senator john mccain not a war hero, whether it was a recent comment about the medal of honor versus the medal of freedom. this is something that he keeps stepping into, and now having to clean up again and again, it'll be interesting to see how this impacts the veteran community that such a critical part of the voter demographic. >> okay, thank you all, we appreciate it. in 90 seconds, an update on the latest legal moves from

territory. we know from president zelinski that f-16s were a big part, played a big role in repelling some of those attacks. a famed ukrainian pilot by the name of moon fish, the callsign, was involved in the effort, he was flying an f-16 and he had just shot down three missiles, and a russian drone. he was on his way to the next target and suddenly, they lost communication with him, his plane crashed, and he died along with the plane, now they've announced this big investigation, they are bringing in the united states to help in the effort to figure out exactly what happened because as it stands now, there's a lot of questions and a lot of rumors about this in ukraine. >> it's also been weeks of cross-border fighting between ukraine and russia with ukraine reportedly gaining ground in russia's kursk territory. what can you tell us about

that? >> that's right, ukrainian authorities also announced additional gains made there in kursk, they continue to dig into the russian territory, meanwhile, the russians continue to make gains in ukraine's eastern donbas region getting closer and closer to the key city that is really seen as critical to the ukrainian front line and its efforts to getting in supplies and their own reinforcements in the donbas region. it was described to me by a western intelligence official as a game of who blinks first, neither side at this point can really afford to be carrying out these offenses, nevertheless, they persist. i was speaking to one analyst who was telling me that the longer putin leaves the situation in kursk with the
9:18 am
ukrainians digging in, the longer it takes to move a substantial amount of forces into the area, to reclaim russian territory, the more difficult it's going to be for putin to get back the russian land. so really, all eyes on these sort of two offenses at this point. no one really knows what's going to happen next. >> let's turn now to the former nato allied commander. it's been more than three weeks since ukrainian troops crossed into russia. should we expect a stronger push from putin to stop them at some point? >> absolutely, and it's high risk in that sense. think of it this way, this in military speak is called a salient which is simply a peninsula of terrain that is driving into an opponents territory, the good news is as you occupy the salient, think of the top of a sorcerers at, you occupy the salient, you can
9:19 am
go left, right, you can keep going straight, the bad news is, and this is your question, putin can surround it, potentially cut it off, trapped thousands of ukrainian troops in place. so i think what we are going to see is the ukrainians digging in hard, so that they have control of this salient and can repel. in other words, i think it is likely that they are going to continue this offense in an aggressive way but they want to hold that terrain not so much for the battlefield but ultimately for the negotiating table. >> we are seeing some heavy aerial attacks in civilian areas and this is something that putin did in the beginning of this war to rake the will of the ukrainian people but there have been disruptions to life and the ukrainian people have been remarkably resilient. how long can the ukrainian tolerate this?

this has put him at odds with the antiabortion movement as donald trump muddies the waters even more by saying his administration, if he wins, would pay for ivf treatments without detailing how they would be paid for. in virginia this morning, tim walz, his wife, gwen, who struggled with infertility went after donald trump. >> here are the facts and there aren't any alternatives to these, donald trump is the one who took down roe versus wade and put access to ivf at risk. that's a fact that he is running on a platform that puts these treatments at risk nationwide and that is a fact. >> let's talk about it. can he have it both ways, can he move to the center on abortion when a lot of the energy and fever that he has
9:29 am
within the republican base is very much in the antiabortion camp? >> the short answer is i don't know. and what trump is doing is unique, donald trump is trying to show nuance, and trump is a communicator, it's full blunt force all the time. he is trying to find a third way, but democrats are not going to support trump regardless of what he says, i think we all know that they can he pull some of those suburban voters who don't like that biden/harris administration, don't like their record on a lot of things, i was in raleigh on sunday and monday, those are the voters that he's talking to but yes he's thinking out loud because he doesn't do nuance well but those are who he's targeting. we will have to see what the harris campaign does as well. >> what about those voters, who are in some minds, single issue

9:31 am
the chaos of roe v wade and there is no nuance on this issue. i think voters are clear about that, too, and no matter how much donald trump tries to move, i think the harris campaign is really in the best position to lay out with great clarity where they are in terms of wanting to restore roe v wade and protect abortion rights. this reproductive freedom tour is going to highlight that and in a state like florida where frankly it's going to be on the ballot, abortion rights on the ballot, there is no moving away from this, so i don't really know how donald trump wins under that circumstance and i think the harris campaign is in a position to clearly define the republican party as the party that is against reproductive freedom. >> donna, i want to play for you a bit of kamala harris yesterday reacting to donald trump attacking her race and identity. >> i want to ask you what he

millions of people millions of people are traveling across the country trying to soak up the last of summer this labor day weekend. the tsa said it expects a record-breaking travel weekend, up to 17 million people will get on airplanes from thursday through wednesday, just yesterday they screened 2.7 million people at american airports alone. and people are just lying, aaa expects the roads to be busier with travel up 9% from last year. the airport in atlanta can get busy and out of control. what are you hearing from travelers there? >> reporter: absolutely, well atlanta's not just on for being the world's busiest airport but we also have some of the worst traffic in the country and we are expecting that to get even

worse this labor day weekend, the record-breaking summer travel season is extending to the roads and we are expecting incredibly busy roadways. if you didn't hit the roads already, don't plan to head out the door between 2:00 and 6:00 and that's when they are expecting it to be the worst on the roadways. you might want to head out after 7:00 p.m. but if you are planning on traveling tomorrow or saturday, it's better to travel in the afternoon and not the morning because a lot of people will be putting off their travel until tomorrow. if you are going to return home on sunday or monday, the earlier the better to avoid the afternoon traffic jams but one thing we are hearing is travelers are pleased with the gas prices right now. they been steadily declining for the past couple of weeks. the average gas price in the nation last year. the great news is that those prices are actually expected to continue to decline until the end of the year. >> okay. thank you for that. let's go to you now. what is the o'hare looking like right now? >> reporter: honestly, so far so

good. you knock on wood, keep your fingers crossed, do whatever you need to do. there are not that many stressed out passengers here. you mentioned, this is expected to be not only a record-setting weekend of travel but the peak travel day in terms of flying is today. the tsa is expected to screen about 3 million people throughout the country today. here at chicago's o'hare airport, they're expecting about a 10% increase in passengers when you compare to the volume of folks that they saw last year during this same holiday weekend. i've been talking to folks here. i've been a little jealous as they've been going to some fancy and cool destinations. i put my jealousy aside and listen to what they told me about their experience here. >> it feels very, very busy. lots of buzz. yeah. my anxiety level feels a little higher so definitely taking a couple deep breaths.

right now because shaq brewster told them it was okay. thank you. we do have some breaking news now related to the georgia election interference case. newly filed court documents show former fulton county election workers ruby freeman and shea moss want to get control of rudy giuliani's assets so they can start collecting some of the $146 million of defamation judgment that they won against the former new york city mayor. the courts have already dismissed giuliani's bankruptcy attempt after the december ruling. this new filing says the one-time personal lawyer to donald trump listed his palm beach condo, not his manhattan apartment as his principal residence, shielding it. lawyers call it an evasive maneuver and they want the property sold so the mother and daughter can collect some of the damages they say they are entitled to. after the 2020 election, rudy
