6:00 am
all right folks, welcome back to rick the weekend.
6:01 am
we are 58 days from the election in november . as harris and trump take the stage , there is a chance for the vice president to contrast economic plans with trump's plans. harris has rolled out new plans to tackle the rising cost of living and investments in small businesses. as for trump, he botched an answer on how we would address the cost of child care in america by rambling about tariffs instead of addressing the major concerns of parents because after all, childcare is childcare. joining us now is jeffrey sonnenfeld from yale, university . >> for all in the house, hey hey . >> you know something about the economy and maybe you can make sense of what we heard. >> that's just to make me sound
6:02 am
smart. >> what did we hear about childcare is childcare. >> childcare is childcare and it is something you have to have in this country, you have to have it. when you talk about those numbers compared to the numbers i'm talking about by taxing nations, they will get used to it. they will have a substantial tax when they send product to our country. those numbers are bigger than any numbers we are talking about including childcare. >> and that reminds me when i was teaching at your alma mater. and a traditional progressive did not know who the guy was. he talked about this lawsuit and he just completely made it up and i have to give him credit for faking it.
6:03 am
this guy gets no credit for faking it. given all the scary things you look that with melissa murray this morning and the dangers of trump coming up. and my colleague, just before the break as i sat down, what value do i bring to this serious discussion? i hope i have good news on the economy. what we will see without a doubt, coming up on tuesday night is more trumpaganda. even democrats and liberal democrats are believing liberal nonsense. something in the 50s, even before i was born called the sleeper effect. you keep recent
6:04 am
repeating nonsense, even unfounded and through the repetition, people start to believe it. researchers at yale for yale day said it was a very dangerous phenomena and what kamala harris has to do is to awaken the nation to this sleeper effect. it will be hard to do but when he bails out, are we better off than we were four years ago in the answer is screaming out, yes. >> and to that point, reuters and goldman sachs said that u.s. economic growth would get the biggest boost with kamala harris winning the white house according to goldman sachs. according to republican sweep and the government led by donald trump, economic input would take a hit from increased tabs on imports and tighter
6:05 am
immigration policies they said. for the folks who know the numbers and see the flow of the economy start to say, timeout. let's understand what we are talking about here. former president trump wants to have a broad and sweeping tariff on pretty much everything. lying to the american people and saying you will not feel that, that is something other governments are going to pay, how does the vice president on tuesday breakthrough on the points you are making? this narrative that people believe that somehow tariffs do not impact them and it is something someone else is going to pay and that is how we are going to pay for child care? >> tariffs are attacks on the average working family. it is almost $4000 a year on tax. he is not taxing the suppliers,
6:06 am
it will be passed on to the consumer. we set it first and then the nobel prize winners extended it . it is going to raise inflation 10% or up to 15%, that alone because of the cost of importing goods and pharmaceuticals or whatever it is, semi conductors. then you have the trade barriers and just between us friends here, harley davidson had to deal with this in the last trump administration. the reciprocal trade barriers were that 100% of harley- davidson's were made in the country and there were reciprocal trade barriers and we saw this in 1930 with the tariffs that were terrible. the ceos are not protectionists and this is one of the reasons
6:07 am
why the business community is protective of kamala harris. they are believers in immigration and the rule of law which is why so many ceos are lining up and no major ceos lining up behind donald trump. the ultimate history of the last century, the party used to have roughly half of the business community supporting the republican candidate and it came to a stop in 2016. >> i hear you on the sleeper effect but when we talk about tariffs and one of the reasons why donald trump loves to talk about them is people know the cost of housing is too high and people can barely afford their rent. for most people, they won't be able to own a house in this country and the cost of childcare is insurmountable. wages have not increased at a
6:08 am
rate to keep up with the rising cost of living. at the grocery store, you get a handful of things and you feel as though you should've gotten a weeks worth of groceries. that is salient to people. the harris campaign has talked about addressing those challenges through corporate price gouging and affordable housing. how do you meet people where they are on those concerns? >> she has got to talk about inflation and wrap it around other things. this is the strongest economy in the world and the world bank has said it is based on the strength of the u.s. economy. and those at goldman sachs's -- >> comrades? >> exactly. >> we haven't seen unemployment this low since but bonanza was
6:09 am
on tv. none of you know that but i used to watch that show. >> i think michael is familiar with bonanza. >> the biden/harris administration created 60 million drops and trump actually lost almost 2 million jobs. the unemployment numbers are great and wage rates are increasing faster than inflation . why did it soar? we just had the worst recession in the per post-world war ii era thanks to former president trump . the way he handled crisis, the economy off the cliff. oil was zero. never in the history of humanity -- now they are going up and then they are
6:10 am
down to 2.99% and we are making progress on inflation. >> you put $1 trillion on the back of the next generation and additional debt. people lost past that. nikki haley tried to warn everybody about that. >> it is the small businesses and that family support. for people who earn under $400,000. you are exactly right. i am so glad you bring up the opportunity. that is so important. that is what she stands for. not just the positive spirit by putting the numbers behind it. it used to be $5000 to start a business and what does that get you? that is the real deal and it makes a difference and it is an important move and every economist is endorsing it as a terrific part of the harris-
6:11 am
walz agenda. >> a true driver of our economy . they think small mom-and-pop shops but there are medium- sized businesses that qualify as small businesses. that is restaurants and also media companies and tech companies, you name it. >> yeah, they are hiring every day individuals. they could be a one-person shop with an assistant or a 50 or 60 person shop. >> big business or small business and you guys were probably at the dnc and i was there too. we saw big business and small business and old and young. it was something that kamala harris does and she is not getting credit for it. she is not out vilifying business leaders large or small
6:12 am
. if there is a problem, she wants to bring them around the table and work it out. nobody has to coach her on how to reach populations that have lacked a voice before. underrepresented minorities. >> she has got it. jeffrey sonnenfeld, thank you so much. he brought papers and everything . >> we have two from yell at the table, what will you do. >> and a highway shooter concerned armed and dangerous. and later at this hour, billy porter joins us here at the table to talk about the work he and the rest of the broadway community are doing to elect kamala harris. you are watching the weekend on
