bid as, quote, a new way forward. while donald trump is starting to sound like a broken record. in the days since the debates, the democratic nominee has returned to the campaign trail and shifted her focus back to the swing states that could be key to her victory in november. yesterday harris returned to the all-important state of pennsylvania where she held rallies and a pair of counties that donald trump won in 2016 and 2020. she sat down with the local news station for her first postdebate and first solo interview as the democratic nominee. the day before that she did north carolina, one of the most purple states on the map. the democrats is only once or twice in the past 50 years but they often voted democrat in statewide elections. it is a state they believe is truly in play this year. tim walz has been out on the road this week rowling voters in michigan and wisconsin. both spouses have been helping

the campaign on the ground in swing states like arizona and georgia. soon, even bigger names are set to hit the trail in support of harris and walz barack and michelle obama and bill and hillary clinton will participate in campaign events beginning this coming week. this is all part of the harris campaign postdebate strategy to reach emperors aid -- persuade undecided voters. they are seeking to capitalize on the winning debate performance which was seen by more than 60,000 million people and given her another boost of momentum in the final weeks of the race. during the debate harris commanded the stage and successfully baited trump into going off on long irrelevant talents about crowd size and other petty topics. demonstrated how his bid is largely a self-serving campaign that exist primarily to boost his own ego. be on that trump's aimless

answers during the debate should make everyone question his competence and ability to hold the most powerful job in the world for another four years. he spent a portion ranting about migrants eating people's pets in ohio. and democrats executing babies after they are born, which prompted them moderator to challenge trump there is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it is born . if you are still trying to make sense of the bulk of what trump's that on tuesday night, you are most definitely not alone . that is because very little of what trump said it made any sense at all . at this point it is actually irresponsible for anyone to pretend like there is logic or substance in the things that come out of his mouth. there is now a term for that, same washing. it is the act of trying to rationalize the rambling, radical and racist statements made by a belligerent.

it is the purposeful or inadvertent effort to sabotage what that belligerent person said to make it seem like he or she said something of value in the middle of a long rant about sharks or lecture boats, for example. trump's speeches has grown too erratic and incoherent to ignore in recent months. that was on full display this week. he has started spreading new conspiracy theories telling the audience that he thinks harris was wearing an earpiece during the debate. that is one of the many conspiracy theories promoted by this woman, laura loomer, a far right self-described races but for tour who has been spotted in trump's entourage. he is unqualified and unserious candidate. unworthy of the presidency and who stop making sense all long, long time ago, if he ever did. wild as it is, donald trump is also the republican nominee for president and the things he says need to be taken seriously . for more in this i'm joined by

disqualified things about donald trump are baked in, so no one cares about them anymore. that is really the wrong take here. it gives him an enormous advantage. he can do anything and we are all just supposed to assume that is just fine and it gives him permission to get away with worse. as you said earlier, it is not as if any of this is new. it is just increasingly less hinged, more delusional, more dangerous. the people he surrounds himself with have always been awful. they are becoming more dangerous to democracy and to american citizens. >> talk to me about how, if at all, we should be bothering. should we be distinguishing between the less hinged and more delusional versus the dustup that he talk about with pets in ohio? which is a very determined and deliberate racist attempt to do something.

and the kremlin back tv network are waging covert information warfare around the globe and are effectively an arm of moscow's spy agencies. the administration adds that rt and the úmedia groups are working to enter here in multiple country elections including in moldova and here in the united states. the revelation came as president biden hosted kier starmer at the white house with russia's war in ukraine being the focal point of their discussions. among the topics of discussion, long-range missiles and specifically whether united states will allow ukraine to use western supplied long-range missiles for strikes inside russia. so far biden has held firm against this. the administration has recently signaled an openness to non- american made and supplied weapons being used inside russia. russia has reacted angrily to the missile push with vladimir putin saying it would be akin to a declaration of war. he has made similar frets throughout

this war. this is the first major push by moscow since ukraine incursion which took place more than a month ago. they claim to have captured some 500 square miles of russian territory. russian defense ministry says that they have recaptured 10 settlements with in that territory. in a statement ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy acknowledged the counteroffensive adding, quote, everything is going in accordance with our ukrainian plan but he did not elaborate on that. turning now to a story involving one of the few instances in when the united states and russia still work together and that is space exploration. suni williams and butch wilmore, the two astronauts who are stranded on the international space station since june announced yesterday

that they will be voting in the upcoming u.s. election from space wilmore told reporters that it is a very important role that we play as citizens. with williams adding she is looking forward to be able to vote from space, which is pretty cool. which it is. how is that done? johnson space station is located in texas. election pixels -- officials are sending them password protected pdf ballots with clickable boxes to make their choices. astronauts have been voting from space since 1997 when the texas legislator passed a bill allowing massive employees to cast ballots from orbit the astronauts are expected to remain stranded at the iss until february and then they plan to come back to work on a spacex capsule as opposed to the boeing starliner spacecraft on which they arrived. we are heading back down to earth and talk to someone on the front lines with protecting voting rights. jocelyn benson and i will discuss the real reasons why republicans keep pushing this information and fear about who

congress needs to pass a top -- stopgap spending bill in order to abort the shutdown is two and half weeks or nine legislative days to be exact. this bill, a resolution would fund the government for the next six months and keep the workers paid and departments running and is now being hijacked by another piece of the big light being spread by donald trump to undermine the election. in 2020 the big lie that the election being stolen centered around claims of rigged voting machines and some dead people voting. this your donald trump is already sowing the seeds of questioning the little just me -- non-citizens voting in large numbers.

he has instructed republicans in congress to hold the funding and functioning of the federal government hostage to spread this new piece of the big lie. republican house speaker mike johnson added a measure to the stopgap spending bill note as the save act. save stands for safeguard american voter eligibility it is a measure that require proof of citizenship when registering to vote. many republicans and lockstep with donald trump are insisting on trying to save tying the save act to the government funding bill. not because the save act has anything to do with keeping the government running. republicans in the house passed the save act as a standalone bill in july. this act has already been passed. has not been signed but they are now attaching it to the short-term spending bill so that it's fate is tied to the functioning of the united states government to force democrats to either vote for

the save act or watch the republican shut down the government a month before election day. which brings us to the problem with the save act and the reason democrats don't want to vote for it at all. the problem with the save act is that it is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections. there is no purpose to it. it is unnecessary from a legal and a legislative perspective. what it is useful for is propaganda. it is a bill to crack down on noncitizen voting, which is a legal and is not actual problem in our election. it sends a message that noncitizen voting is a problem at a time with donald trump and his republican allies are pushing that exact life to undermine the legitimacy of america electoral process. the save act is inextricably bound up in the lies that donald trump is telling about immigrants and our elections. donald trump wrote on true social, if republicans in the house and senate do not get

assurances on election security, they should all go forward with a continuing resolution on the budget. the democrats are trying to stuff voter registration with illegal aliens, do not let it happen. close it down! he repeated this lie during the debate on tuesday. >> we have to have borders and good elections. our elections are bad. a lot of these illegal immigrants coming in are trying to get them to vote they cannot speak english and know what country they are in practically and these people are trying to get them to vote. that is why they are allowing them to come into our country. >> for fax sake, as i said, it is already illegal for non- citizens to vote in federal u.s. elections. that includes house, senate and presidential elections. there are number of safeguards in place to make sure only eligible citizens registered to vote and cast a ballot for they

must come from under penalty of perjury that they are citizens when they registered to vote. if it is found that someone like bacon face of fines, imprisonment or deportation. when registering most states require a driver's license or a state i.d. the save act wants to require citizens to produce more documentation, including -- i one thing about where your passport and birth certificate are right now, including a bath -- passport or birth certificate but many of eligible americans do not have easy access to these papers. this is not only building distrust but it drives voter suppression. another roadblock in the way to legitimate voting when speaker johnson was asked about noncitizens illegally voting, he could not provide any examples or evidence. here is what he told reporters in may. >> the answer is that it is unanswerable. we all know intuitively that a lot of illegals are voting in

federal elections but it has not been something that is provable. we do not have that number. >> we all know intuitively. it sounds like i have a concept of a plan, which after eight years in politics donald trump says he has about healthcare in america. the question if there is lot of illegal voting in the united states, it is answerable. it is the bookable. i have been rare cases of noncitizens illegally registering to vote and casting ballot. despite what some are saying, these cases are in no way widespread. i am not made difference -- federal law requires states to maintain their voter rolls and renew people who are ineligible. they have registered or attempted to register to vote. even with this and other vetting process is in place, a small number of noncitizen voters have been uncovered ohio

secretary of state frank lareau has directed around 600 noncitizen registrations to be removed from the voter rolls. out of roughly eight million voters. in 2022 george's republican secretary of state, brad raffensperger, conducted an audit of his photo rolls looking for noncitizens. he found that 1634 had attempted to register to vote but election officials copped the applications before they were process, let alone before they cast a vote. in north carolina in 2016 an audit of elections found that 41 noncitizens with legal american status but not citizenship, which could meet some of a green card, did cast ballots in election with 4.8 million vote, 41 ballots not affect the outcome. there is another way are -- layer of nuance. in some instances they can vote, which is awake to

encourage participation of people who live in a geographic area and encourage citizens to -- citizenship. as of june the district of columbia and municipalities in california, maryland and vermont allowed noncitizens to vote in some or all local elections read this could raise confusion in the state causing noncitizens because they were allowed to vote in their local elections they could vote in the federal elections making the attempt to vote in federal elections in a burden as opposed to a deliberate breaking of federal law. widespread cases of this happening have not been uncovered intuitively, we do not know anything. despite what is going on at the local or state level, it is still a legal anywhere for noncitizens to vote in a federal election. there are still systems in place to enforce the law. what donald trump and republicans are peddling is not

a solution to the problem, it is propaganda that will help set the stage for another round of election denialism and a new big lie, if donald trump loses this fall. dreaming out is jocelyn benson, the secretary of state of michigan, who has written the book you want to . a book about elections, she has written it. thanks for being with us. >> always a pleasure, thanks for having me. >> you testified before congress about the dangers of these lies, like speaker johnson's and donald trump's. what kind of threats come from these lies being done around carelessly? >> the real threat is the threat to election officials, people who have been fed these lies. i understand the fear of an election system where anyone but u.s. citizens are participating but it is an unfounded fear. when people who have been misled to believe that this is actually happening, when he does not, then they direct their ire at us.

those who are angry doing everything they can to protect the integrity of the process. that is the irony of the whole thing but it makes us do this work in a state of hypervigilance he and anxiety that we do not know who will show up at our doorstep trying to exert some sort of justice against us for doing our jobs and making sure that only u.s. citizens are voting in our elections. >> i was talking to mary trump about some of the nonsense of his views. some of things he says are deliberate and they are meant to do something deliberately. we remember this time before the 2020 election where donald trump told reporters i will not accept the results of the election if they are not fair. this is that version of something that is like it will be a big lie. when mike johnson can say we all know that these noncitizens are voting, even though we cannot provide the evidence. what does this do to voter faith in our election systems?

>> that is the other impact. it is sowing seeds of doubt, fault seeds of doubt. it creates a false narrative of illegitimacy or delegitimizing our elections at large. and also discouraging people not just from believing in the results as accurate but voting at all. that is the big goal of all of these pieces that we are seeing. one, plant seeds of doubt in the minds of american voters about the legitimacy of elections. and also to set up the stage through legal cases are everything after 2020 two challenge to legitimate election results in the future if they do not like them. it is antithetical to everything we believe in and our democracy. the facts and the truth and the data will continue to guide us as we make sure our elections are secure and try to empower others to see the truth as well >> we talked a lot of secretary of state on the show but you are the professor of secretary of states.

pull back the curtain and tell us about all of the things that you do. you do a lot of things to keep election safe in general. and the last elections were the safest in this country. what is it you do with respect to citizenship? how is it that you determine that everyone who is voting is a citizen of the united dates? that is the reality. we actually do so much to ensure only eligible citizens are registered to vote in our state. the vast majority of people registered through our office have to show documentation because they get their drivers license or i.d. at the same time and they're automatically being registered to vote it shows whether they are citizen or not. if it shows they are not a citizen, like a green card or something else, they are marked is not a citizen and cannot be registered to vote. in addition we have almost five times after that in which people must reaffirm that they are a citizen. when they get the application to vote, show up to vote.

and then you have local clerks doing a review and we proactively audit our roles on a regular basis to ensure that only eligible citizens are registered to vote. it is white michigan is ranked number four in the country for going above and beyond to ensure the accuracy of our voter rolls. the irony is that we are also the most targeted right now because the path to the presidency runs through our state. people are link suspicions on our procedures but the procedure speak for themselves. people can go to michigan.gov/vote to look in detail everything that we do. >> i think they should. know how your elections are administered so you can have these discussions with people who tell you that they are unsafe. it is dry work on the part of you and your colleagues but the important work that upholds democracy. we are grateful for your time this morning. thank you for joining us. jocelyn benson is the secretary of state in michigan.

when concerns launch their attack on constitutional rights to abortion it marked the first phase of a broader objective, to end reproductive freedom in this country entirely. their latest efforts to revive a law but is more the 150 years old makes clear their end game. to pass a nationwide abortion ban if resurrected under the next republican presidential term, the 1873 comstock act would go further been the dobb supreme court decision that

overturned roe v. wade. not content restricting abortion access in many states this effort is a brazen attempt to rein in states that continue to detect women's reproductive freedom. project 2025 distorts the original intent of the comstock act, which has never been used to prosecute abortion care but i will get into that shortly. the christian legal group that filed the dobb's lawsuit, the alliance defending freedom, is a prominent adviser to project 2025, with sites its goal of using the comstock act to go after medication abortion. in chapter 17, which focuses on the department of justice, project 2025 directs the department of justice to enforce the comstock act. on page 562 it says, following the supreme court's decision in dobbs, there is no federal prohibition on the enforcement

of the statute. the department of justice in the next conservative administration shouldn't announce its intent to enforce federal law against providers and distributors of such pills. notably, this section is authored by jean hamilton. a lawyer and former justice department staffer under the trump administration . that is relevant because donald trump keeps saying he has nothing to do with project 2025 . you might wonder why these extremists are targeting medication abortion which involves taking pills to end a pregnancy in the privacy of one's home. the abortion pill is only effective during the early stages of pregnancy come up to around 10 weeks. it cannot be used for that second or third trimester pregnancies. when republicans push the narrative that women are aborting fully developed babies, that is alive.

according to healthcare nonprofit kff, late-term abortions are exceedingly rare representing just 1% of all abortions in the united states and typically only occur in extreme circumstances in reality, the most common form of abortion care in the united states is not surgical, it is medication. this method has surged since the passions of near-total abortion bans in a handful of states following the dobb's ruling does help prevent a worse reproductive health crisis reducing wait times in blue states that have become overwhelmed by the end of out- of-state patient coming in to seek abortion care by targeting this form of abortion, conservators are imposing a de facto national abortion ban, attacking the last remaining safe and legal option in the many states that have outlawed surgical abortion. if the comstock act is like to be in force and this way, it would submit its control over women's reproductive health choices. over a woman's most intimate decisions concerning her health and her body.

it is also important to understand the timing and effort to revive the dormant law. they are pushing at a time when abortion bans are unpopular even amongst most republican voters. according to an ap poll from this past june, a solid majority of americans, only 9% oppose congress passing a nationwide ban on legal abortion. we bring along partisan lines, 64% of republicans oppose it as do 91% of democrats. by relying on the comstock act, republican can bypass the need to go through congress. their strategy is egregious considering that the comstock act was never intended to apply to legal abortions and has never been interpreted by the courts or by congress to be used as a blanket criminalization of abortion access. the comstock act reads, quote, every obscene, lewd, lascivious, indecent, filthy or vile article matter or thing or device or substance -- what is

next part of this -- is burke non-mailable matter. items that were intended for the prevention consumption or procurement of an abortion. this law was historically understood as applying only to unlawful abortions and several judicial rulings pointed to the lack of any congressional interpretation on this issue. there are many legal uses of medical abortion including to protect the health of the mother, which means it is impossible to determine the intent of someone who is prescribing abortion pills and making it difficult to prosecute. which is why the law has never been used to prosecute medication abortion or the mailing of abortion related materials roe v. wade would make this laws abortion provision entirely obsolete by establishing a constitutional right to abortion. under this, project 2025,

voters have tried to protect reproductive rights anyone to provide this law from 1873 that was past when women could not participate in the electoral process. and certainly were not represented in congress. that is the law they want to bring back to subordinate body autonomy to support their version of gender roles. >> i think we hundred -- i think we need to understand why it is to on the books. how is the comstock act understood prior to roe v. wade ? why has it never been used to do best, prosecute abortion care? >> before lowe was overruled, the comstock act cannot be enforced because the court had held that abortion was a consciously protected right. even without roe the interpretation basically set it is only illegal to mail medication abortion or abortions if you are obtaining

an illegal abortion. that is it is not, you know, prohibited to mail medication abortion to someone in a state were abortion is legal or abortion would not be prohibited by federal law. this is an exceptionally aggressive interpretation of the comstock act. the reason why the comstock act was never repealed is because courts had this very limited construction and the antiabortion movement was attempting to go after the doctors who were trying to provide women healthcare with the comstock act. it was used to prosecute people who were critical of the comstock act. the law actually had as is origin and effort to prosecute one of the leading advocates for women's ability to vote and they decide to pass it obscenity law to keep women from speaking and keep them out of the political process and ensure they cannot have autonomy over their bodies. even after that, the law was never used as a federal abortion ban. you have the modern-day project 2025 and republican supporters

wanting to go even further than the victorian area, you know, purity law of the 1870s. >> project 2025 aims to have the department of justice -- abortion is all over this document but this was in the apartment justice section, it aims to have them enforce the comstock act against providers and distributors of abortion pills. that could be everybody, anyone who has role in the distribution. tell me how that reshapes the legal landscape in states where abortion remains legal, in the michigan and the new york and the california and the massachusetts of the country? >> is terrifying because what it would do is it would allow the federal government and the criminal apparatus to go around stooping to see whether there are individuals or doctors in states where abortion is perfectly legal who are accessing medication abortion. that possibility is really terrifying. of course, this
