trump uses week to take his ambitions to new heights. how dictatorships of the past operas clues about a second trump term. the consequences of the springfield alive. but the women who started all is now saying. today's debate sparked several meltdowns but we are breaking them down in today's worst of the week. i am ayman mohyeldin , let us do it. years from now we may look back at the events of this week as being pivotal in american history. not just because kamala harris and donald trump debated in front of 67 million americans but because trump to use this debate, the widest audience either candidate will likely speak in front of with the authoritarian rhetoric but to turn it up a notch to amplify it in the masses.

in what may be remembered as one final warning about what a second trump administration will be, free from guard rails and sheila by the supreme court with legal immunity, trump combined all of his biggest hits, his bigotry, lies and threats to democracy in one evening for all of us to see. all the boxes on the authoritarian checklist were checked when moderator david mure asked him about how he finally seemed to have acknowledged the 2020 election results trump shot back with this. >> are you an analogy that you lost? >> i say that sarcastically. we lost by a whisker. that was said sarcastically. there is so much proof. all you have to do is look at it and they should have sent it back to the legislature for approval. >> he referred to the january 6th insurrectionist as we and
5:03 pm
defended the rioters. trump went down to falsely claim that illegal immigrants were coming into the country to vote for democrats and repeated the claim that haitian immigrants are eating people's pets in springfield, ohio. a dangerous light that is now putting lives in danger. he promised the largest mass deportation in u.s. history and said he would use local police along with federal authorities to round everyone up and when harris attracted trump for being a laughingstock among world and military leaders, look at who trump cited in his defense. >> me tell you about world leaders, viktor orban, one of the most respected men -- mccallum a strongman. he is a tough person. prime minister of hungary. >> viktor orban? the man who is let authoritarian takeover of hungary for the past 14 years. he has attacked his country's press freedoms, judicial freedoms, lgbtq rights, immigration. he calls himself a champion of liberal democracy. this is the man that donald trump and myers and model

himself after in front of millions of americans. it is not just modern-day authoritarians that we can look to for warning signs when trump uses certain phrases calling political enemies berman claiming that immigrants are poisoning the blood of our country and his running mate now claiming that haitian immigrants are spreading diseases. we know where that rhetoric comes from. just take a look at what the u.s. holocaust museum says about not see propaganda. it portrays people persecuted as berman, parasites or diseases. this ideology focused on the idea that germany's racial purity was under attack from the blood of weaker peoples and propaganda often depict did the political opponents and others as parasites that threaten the overall health of germany. it is the same rhetoric, all the warning signs are here for us to see.
5:05 pm
he did not tone it down for the large mainstream audience. he wants us all to know what is coming if he is re-elected. joining me now to discuss this hayes brown, writer and editor at msnbc daily , kindling shepley, an expert on authoritarianism and a professor at princeton, and rick wilson author of running against the devil, a plot to save america from trump and the democrats from themselves. hazel, i will start with you. this was not a random speech and how michigan to the base or the most extreme part of his base. it was not an online twitter thing with elon musk where the system kept crashing. this was national tb broadcast two 67 million americans and tens of millions of people around the world. that is what he chose to deliver this message that i just went through. >> i think that what trump is doing is honestly, just acting
5:06 pm
on instinct. we know that his bait prep it is just him sitting around with advisers and kind of floating ideas and kicking around the things that he would want to say to attackers on. the lie about eating cats and dogs, that was supposed to be a bait and switch. we turns around on harris to talk about immigration. that is at the core of so much of what he is trying to do here. it is trying to find a way to get that rhetoric that you were mentioning about how horrible immigration is, how terrible immigrants are and they are the one who are ruining the country to a mainstream audience. trump is the wrong person to deliver that message. they are finding it through j.d. vance as well. j.d. vance is not well-liked, wrong person to deliver the message. all that is being amplified are the weird and horrible racist parts of this.
5:07 pm
which is riling up their base. thankfully, that means we are talking about it and trying to explain to people who are confused about what their message is trying to say, what they are actually meaning to get across. >> it also speaks to how vulnerable he is to social media and the fact that he can see something online and totally take it and amplify it to millions of people, this lie about immigrants eating pets in ohio. professor, greg sargent wrote a piece called trump slowburn authoritarianism. he argues that should trump win office and consolidate power, he may do it quietly. he writes in its targeting of internal enemies and its efforts to carry out changes via far right governing, it could end up being much less dramatic, visible or splashy. at the same time insidious, difficult to track and very challenging to mobilize against. a stained legal and bureaucratic harassment.
5:08 pm
you see that way in your area of expertise? do you agree that it would play out like this? is this part of viktor orban's playbook? this 14 your takeover of the american government? >> we have to see authoritarianism runs on two tracks. one is the rhetoric that you have been discussing and the other track is the kind of infrastructure that locks in power for a long time. one of the significant factors about trump mentioning or bond is that is not just a mutual fan club and he has already endorsed trump for president but that he is working at the heritage foundation was great of the project 2025 report that we know is the foundation of trump's policies for many that are elected. the crucial thing is that the way that he took over when he came to power in 2010 was by firing lots of civil servants and then replacing them with his own people. that is exactly the same plan you see in the
5:09 pm
heritage report. when trump mentions orban, i would not say it is just a matter of birds of a feather ideologically , but it is also the trump people are learning from the orban playbook about how to lock in power and the un-splashy way but that is the thing that keeps the mayor. >> rick, there is an important point in what the professor was saying about the playbook and the parallels between viktor orban and what donald trump wants to replicate in this country. when the democrats moved from joe biden to the vice president, it was reported the harris campaign was talking less about this authoritarian is in and threat to democracy. she kind of struck a more positive tone, less about the fear of what trump represents to our democracy. harris and walz have been ridiculing and knocking trump down instead of building him up at this huge scary threat. anything from a strategy point of view? it is effective but will it be

5:11 pm
on the right in this country today is not conservative. it is radical. well my friend is excellent, i think that even if it is a slowburn, a grind, you will see the impact of that so quickly on the broader part of society because trump has told us what he will do. he will go after his political opponents. he will liberated from prison the january 6th terrace. he has told us what he will do. there is a lot of trump that is motivated by the roar of the crowd. i think it will be harder for donald to resist doing the big horrible fascist things in order to play the long game. he has never been a good long player. the interesting thing is when you look at some like trump is that he may be but clownish figure. he may be the guy who does it for the roar of the crowd. but who he brings into the mix, who he enables, the way that they go about dismantling it,
5:12 pm
the zoo -- these are the people who work in the shadows, potential director of cia or various cabinet positions that do not get the attention that trump is. while he gets all the attention on him, the dismantling of democracy is happening by people he has enabled who are more sinister and strategic in the way they do so. >> that is right. >> absolutely. one thing that rick is right about, that it is going to be the people that he works with. trump is not that great at the long game. he can barely control his impulses during the debate. what i think he learned in his first term was that his most enduring accomplishment was altering, shall we say packing the supreme court. and that he did because he outsourced it to a group of people who have a very specific goal in mind. they had a game plan and he does let them do it. what you are saying is he has outsourced a lot of what he plans to do in the second term to the heritage foundation and to this project 2025.
5:13 pm
and the heritage foundation is already training a set of people who can hit the ground running as a say on day one. one thing about firing civil servants on day one and replacing them with their own people is that our constitution has a mechanism for ensuring the people in power are responsible and that is consent of the senate for all the key positions. if you are the agencies and you just fire your own people, you are bypassing that advice and consent process but it means that trump can put into those positions far more radical people then you get through the senate. that is a danger signal i think we have to be on the lookout for. >> we have to make sure we do not get numb to donald trump. we cannot get the team by the way that he just sucks the energy out of the room. as we get closer to the election, it will only intensify and you want to make sure you still have attention.
5:14 pm
the threat is real and it is now at the doorstep of our republic. >> two things, it is nine years. it is hard to not get fatigued. i think that goes both ways. i think his routine is tired. i think that he is trying to keep people's attention. as part of why we see this escalation of rhetoric from him. he wants more and more attention, more and more people in the crowd to agree with him. on our end, especially in the news media, we are trying to make sure that people are aware of what is happening. the whole structure of how you structure news is what is new. if he has been saying the same thing for a long time, it is hard to shake people and make sure they know, i know he said this before that he is still saying it. it is still true and he still means to do this. he still means to carry out these plans.
5:15 pm
like the firing of civil servants, he was told about that at the end of the last term. the is the plan to be put into place as soon as he won. we have to keep letting people know what is going on. >> you cannot take the foot of the pedal right now in the face of the threat. thank you so much, i appreciate it. please stick around. we have a lot more to talk to you about. to quote the unhinged conspiracy theory that is putting an entire u.s. community on edge. in my the woman who started it all is having regrets. evan y'm with savings, right?
