hello and good evening. coming at you with breaking news. at this hour, security is ramped up and the secret service is on high alert at mar- a-lago after an apparent assassination attempt on former president donald trump. now he is home tonight unharmed. but no less than a dozen police cars are visible at the resort and an investigation led by the fbi is under way after the secret service fired on an armed man while trump was on the course. just a few hundred feet away. one person is in law enforcement custody. identified as ryan welsey routh. age 58. an ak47 and scope were recovered at the scene among
6:02 pm
other things. president joe biden, vice president kamala harris and governor tim walz have also made statements that they're glad he's safe. just last hour posted on social media calling him strong and resilient. so let's start in west palm beach where kathy park is standing by. describe the scene for us, what's the latest. >> reporter: good evening so we're right in front of the golf course. and i can tell you the security here has not led up. earlier today we heard law enforcement real little crediting the quick actions of a witness who spotted the suspect right away. right before 2:00 this afternoon when the incident played out. officials are saying this witness saw the man jump out from the brush, the shrubbery that surrounds this golf course. and was quick to write down the actual license plate numbers of
6:03 pm
the get away vehicle. it was a black nissan. and this person shared the information with police right away. and was able to track down the suspect along the interstate. but the interstate as you can imagine, was pretty chaotic. even getting to this location earlier today. they were blocking off different ramps. roadways, surrounding the golf course as the investigation kind of pressed ahead. they were able to get the suspect. and we heard earlier tonight this individual was actually pretty compliant. and surrendered to law enforcement quickly. but, chris just to kind of go back a little bit, and just kind of walk through exactly how we got here. it all unfolded around the 2:00 hour right before 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. the former president was on the golf course. we're hearing from sources any where between the fifth and sixth hole. and typically when the former president plays golf here, or at any golf course, he has
6:04 pm
security detail that has this kind of protective bubble around him. they were out in front. and they noticed something suspicious. noticed an individual, a gunman was aimed toward the former president. that's when these agents decided to react quickly. they fired we're told at least four rounds. but they're saying right now it's unclear if the suspect actually fired at the agents. but we're told, at this hour, no injuries to report. but obviously after they heard shots fired. local state federal agencies moved in very quickly. securing the area. right now even though the security is pretty tight we're told there's no danger. but obvious lip obviously this is just the beginning of the investigation, chris. authorities are actually encouraging members of the public. if you have any information. if you're in the area, to contact them right away. >> ka thy park, thank you for that. i know you have new reporting
6:05 pm
from palm beach county. you came out here, you were on the phone. you've been on the computer, what's the latest? >> sure thing. so the latest according to dave arenburg, this case is already going to be federal. it allows them to keep that suspect in custody until federal charges can be filed. that's not going to apply here. aaronburg is already saying this is going to go federal and it's going to go there right away. so the specific types of charges that they could bring, still a little bit unclear. it's important to notice he did this interview with our colleagues that you don't need to fire a round for you to be charged with attempted assassination. it'll be interesting to see whether or not federal investigators have enough evidence to bring that forward. he says this individual who has been identified according to three senior u.s. law enforcement officials as the alleged suspect here. that apparently, he was quote lying in wait for trump.
6:06 pm
he was waiting for the form ore president to get to that point in the golf course. and it was the secret service there that found him. as far as other part of this investigation. the technology involved here. you can imagine back in the day sort to speak. maybe 5, 10 years ago how long perhaps it would have taken law enforcement to be able to find where he was. the fact that he's from north carolina could have made that more of a challenge. this witness had the presence of mind not only to get the photograph of the car but to able to get the license plate. they put that into a data base in the realtime crime center. a lot of law enforcement agencies have it now. they type it in. and it's abc1234, they type that in and then it says okay. in this instance, he's on i95. and then they look at the various spots where those license plate readers are capturing him. he's going northbound. this is where he is. so 45 minutes north of where this shooting occurred or where he was engaged by secret
6:07 pm
service, they find him. they take him into custody. and then they get the witness up to the scene to say, hey, is that the guy you saw who was in the bushes and who the secret service fired at with a gun he says yes. so that's apparently how they're able to make this positive identification. just a little bit behind the scenes about where this investigation stands. they've got the car presumably they've got any sort of phones. they have a social media presence, a possible twitter account for him was just taken down. his facebook account was taken down earlier today. so they'll come through comb through those things. and they will figure out was this person talking to anybody. and the big question, how did hi purchase the gun. because if he had prior felon arrests he would not be able to purchase this weapon. did he purchase it illegally, did somebody give it to him
6:08 pm
illegally. those are questions that they're looking at in the next hours. >> we don't know if he would be in custody if it were not for that good samaritan, hero, fast thinking, you know, passer by. who thought i better write this down and immediately contacted police. what more do we know about bryan wesley routh. i've known that he's the only person in the country with his name and date of birth. what do we know about him. >> that's what it looks like from public records. a portrait of him is emerging. it's not conclusive. it doesn't tell us definitively about motive. we know a few things. we know he lived for a long time in north carolina. and there's a number of convictions there. one for possession of weapon of mass destruction. we don't know much about that. we have a linked in account that says he moved to hawaii at
6:09 pm
one point. we have a long history of tweets on x now. with all kinds of things all over the map. some very strange things including at one point inviting the north korean dictator kim jong-un to go to hawaii to do work with him. he traveled to ukraine. he was describing his efforts to go fight for the ukrainian cause. but because he was 56 years old at the time with no military experience, they did not accept him. he tried to recruit people to go fight for ukraine. those are the kind of things that we're finding out about him. it doesn't tell us why he chose to do this or what his motive
6:10 pm
was. it raises the questions with all these charges that he was able to attain this rifle. and one good thing, is that the secret service was able to spot the rifle. that was lucky. but it still doesn't answer the question why someone was able to get at shots range of the former president. >> you can say that they were doing their job well. >> that's right, that's the point of going ahead of president trump. and clearing the bubble. you heard the officials a few hours ago point out that donald trump does not have the same level of security that a current president would have. and that if he was president, it's possible that the entire golf course would have been cleared in advance when he played. and that's going to raise some
6:11 pm
questions because he's already had an attempt on his life. there's intelligence that iranians are trying to kill him. if donald trump doesn't merit the maximum security service at this point who does. there's going to be questions asked about what the secret service and what are they bringing. >> some of those questions are already being raised by various members who's job it is frankly to oversee this and some others who are supporters of donald trump. but tom, i'm wondering, two assassination attempts in just a little over two months. and i wonder if one of the things they'll be looking for maybe we'll find if they are scrubbing what's in his computer. is how closely he followed the first assassination attempt. you have to raise the question of a copy cat. >> you absolutely do. and to piggy back to what kevin was mentioning. it's a short amount of time but a long way to go to this presidential election. i can tell you tonight based on our reporting there are serious
6:12 pm
questions being asked at the top of the federal law enforcement in this country as to how does the rest of this presidential election go. we have candidates criss crossing the country. they love these large rallies. and we're seeing the former president in butler, pennsylvania. how are these individuals aware of trump's travels or somebody elses travels. we're told, this is blatantly obvious toward former president trump. that's the amount of threats that are coming in is very high. the amount of threats are coming in against vice president kamala harris his opponent very high. along with her running mate. the secret service is pausing and saying how do we possibly protect all these people and oh by the way chris, less than a mile from where you and i are sitting. a week from today, people are going to be coming into town 100 foreign dignitaries, foreign leaders. it's the high week where you have everybody in town.
6:13 pm
now the secret service as part of a national specialty event is going to be there having to protect all this. working in their favor is the fact they have the new york city police department that can throw hundreds of cops over a thousand cops on this and try to help them out protecting everybody who's here. it's a huge question. it's not as if we're in quote unquote peacetime. we have the middle east where we have israel and hamas, israel and hezbollah. that's very much a concern. they did arrest someone tied to iran or sympathetic to iran. you have that as a potential issue. you obviously have what russia has been doing with ukraine invading ukraine. something that came up perhaps in this individual's background. so putting it all together, there are serious threats that exist on top of just the challenge normally of running the uaga or the amount of
6:14 pm
events that we typically have when you have two candidates. >> thank you so much. let's bring in carol lenyn. washington post investigator who won a pulitzer prize on her reporting of the secret service. let's talk secret service tonight. let me pick up carol, where tom just left off. tell us about staffing at the secret service because it was raised after the first assassination attempt and already those questions are being asked again now. >> you know there's a lot of struggle in the secret service at all times because for the last 12 years, there have been caps on how many people they can hire and what i have heard ever since the last assassination attempt, i can't believe i'm saying the last assassination attempt in july. is that, the number of people who are especially trained
6:15 pm
tacticians is exceedingly low. in other words the people who do counter surveillance, counter sniper, cover and evacuation or what's called the counter assault team. those specialists who are really important in protecting the president in addition to his working shift the security detail, immediately around him. that group is really on hard times. they are far fewer of them than have been in the past. and that's a real challenge. and tom earlier is exactly right. that this agency is responsibility right now for protecting more than 40 people in addition to the president. and now, add the candidates. the vice presidential candidate on the republican side. the former president, the republican nominee. add that to the number on top of that after the assassination attempt chris, you had the
6:16 pm
secret service director telling lawmakers, ron rowe telling people we're ramping up the protection for harris, joe biden, for the two presidential candidates. they're all these people are getting close to presidential protection. why would a man with a long gun be that close to donald trump? >> and they know the bushes are there. the palm beach county sheriff, ric bradshaw told reporters just how close the gunman was to the former president of the united states. let me play that sound. >> and at this level that he is at right now. he's not the sitting president. if he was we would have had the
6:17 pm
entire golf course surrounded. but because he's not security is limited to the areas that the secret service deems possible. so i would imagine the next time he comes to the golf course, there will probably be a little more people around the perimeter. but, the secret service did exactly what they should have done. >> so, even if, and congress would have to get involved i presume. even if we need to hire more secret service agents, we need to have more people around donald trump, kamala harris, the president. all the other 40 people you talked about. it's not like they can snap their fingers right. maybe they can call on some retired agents but, is it even realistic to think that they can significantly ramp up protection between now and election day? >> you know, i want to stress two things and answer again a very good question. number one the candidate is probably going to have to do
6:18 pm
something different in order to protect himself. i don't mean that the secret service can't protect him, but it's true. they can't snap their fingers and create a fortress around him and allow him to also golf in a course that is accessible by roadways and residential streets. you know, there is going to have to be some sort of consideration of another kind of security bubble around him. and some changes in his routine. a golf course that is semi public and next to residential streets probably is not ideal. right after the shooting in butler, the then director of the secret service told the trump campaign, no more outdoor events for a little while until we figure out how to secure you in those places. i think you're going to see the director now acting director come out and say either to the campaign or publicly say, we're going to have to have to do
6:19 pm
something differently. because even if every single department of homeland security agent gets pulled out from the boarder or from homeland investigations or from tsa ifing all of these agents get put on to security for the candidates i don't think that will be enough. >> yes holding rally, going into small places. going into coffee shops. going into diners. they go off the report, otr. but in open public places, and my question is to what extent you can limit that. and who has the final say. take us inside the power
6:20 pm
structure carol if the acting director of the secret service says to kamala harris or donald trump, you can't do an outdoor rally anymore or donald trump who by the way, golfs almost any chance he gets certainly when he's near one of his courses. he often has meetings there. he often is with as he was today with close friends and people who have donated to his campaign. can he say yes i am or do they have the final word? how does that work? >> there is no hard and fast absolute rule other than candidate can say, you know what i'm going to do what i want to do. i'm going to take the risks i want to take and so sorry. they could do that. but the general practical reality is, that the secret service tries to control and pressure and basically guilt trip presidents and their staff
6:21 pm
and candidates and their staff to do what is safe. i've had agents tell me about the time they insisted that bullet-proof glass be put up when then candidate obama was president-elect. when he was in grant park, there were a lot of questions how are we going protect this guy who has literally a bulls eye on him because he's the first black, about to be the first black president. and they said we're going to put up bullet-proof glass. can the president or candidate say take a hike. and the answer is yes, they can. he can continue to golf. he can continue to hold outdoor events. but i think he's going to be counseled that this is not safe. you will remember that former presidents then presidents often golfed in secure military bases. where a guy with a gun would not have been able to poke

through a bushy fence. that would just not have happened. you may remember, you brought it up actually, otrs. off the record, is the way to go when a president or a candidate is trying to interact with the public. it's often a great way in the secret services view, because it's a surprise. no assassin can be laying in wait as you know matthew crooks was or as the suspect ryan routh was. no one can be laying in wake and planning if it's an off the record. and also you said earlier, it's so important for candidates to be near the people in the weeks and days before the election. well everyone now knows that what got john f. kennedy killed. he insisted to the secret service over and over again, i want open car. so that voters can see me coming by. i want to pull over in that limousine in that open convertible and i want to shake

joining me now florida congressman jared moskowitz. thank you so much congressman for being with us. you know after the close door briefing you all got into the first assassination attempt. law members were asked the question that i now ask you under different circumstances and it's this. are you confident that the secret service has the resources it needs to protect donald trump and kamala harris and joe biden? >> thanks for having me. i never thought that first i would be appointed to an assassination task force. attempted assassination on a president in my first two years in congress, little did i think it would be ground hog day. and on that assassination task force there would be a second assassination attempt just two months from the first one. and only a month into the formation of this task force. so yes i'm deeply concerned. that right now we don't have a good handle on the situation.
6:56 pm
the idea that there has been two attempts and they have been able to get close enough, to the former president is deeply disturbing. i'm concerned that donald trump is actually not safe. at this point and quite frankly i don't know if there's any evidence to show me that he is safe. the fact that there's two attempts. in this instance the officers saw the threat and neutralized it. the question really is. what process allowed the threat to get so close to the former president. especially with the fact that there was an assassination attempt just two months ago. and so, i am concerned. i do have faith in local law enforcement. it was about 15 minutes from the golf course today on a private matter. i know the sheriff and i know

well moe. the a s you well know. the one that was in charge after the investigation resigned. are you confident based on what you learned behind closed door on with your committee, the other questions you've asked, maybe answers that you've gotten that the situation within the secret service is stronger, safer for these candidates now less than what, we're about two months out. and as was pointed out earlier on the show. already some mail in ballots are going out early voting is going to begin. i mean, is this going to impact how we run free and fair elections and allow voters to see their candidates? >> well this cannot become normal. that's quite frankly we've seen mass shootings become normal. but assassination attempts on candidates cannot become
6:59 pm
normal. mentally ill people have access to weps. but they shouldn't have access to our president and former presidents. i think the new leader of the secret service is definitely headed in a much better direction than the director that resigned. i think that was clear from her testimony and the fact that she didn't even visit the site of the first assassination attempt. so look, i think what needs to happen now is look, the secret service, the fbi, law enforcement agency, homeland security, everybody is moving fast on the first assassination attempt. now we have a second assassination attempt. but they need to share that information with the american people. i appreciate that the task force is getting it that i'm on. but you have people in this country on the left who think the assassination the attempted assassination of former president was staged and you have people on the right that think it was the deep state. and that's because they're not getting any information when there's a vacuum misinformation will fill that space. and so i plead with the fbi,

on high alert following what the fbi is calling an apparent assassination attempt on former president donald trump. earlier today, trump emailed this campaign message to supporters, saying, "there were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, i wanted you to hear this first. i am safe and well! nothing will slow me down. i will never surrender!" one person is in law enforcement custody after the incident. he is identified as ryan wesley routh. he is 58 years old, according to senior law enforcement officials briefed on the matter. an ak-47 and scope were recovered at the scene. earlier today at a press conference in palm beach county, the sheriff rick bradshaw had some insights into the investigation. >> we are going to make these pictures available to you. i will show you a picture of a backpack and a rifle and there is also a gopro where he was intent on filming what was going on.

officials were able to track down -- this individual has now been identified as ryan routh , on the interim statement we should also point out that according to authorities, he was compliant and surrendered pretty quickly. now, this all happened around the 2:00 hour. earlier this afternoon, the former president was playing golf, he was somewhere around the fifth and sixth hole, and just to kind of give you an idea of how this all shakes out, when he is on the golf course, the protocol is you have secret service who has this protective bubble around him, and they were at the whole in front of him, and noticed that the gunman aiming toward the former president, that's when agents began firing rounds. it is unclear at this point if the suspect actually fired back, but we do know there were no injuries. the area, as you can imagine, was quickly secured. you had local, state, federal agencies moving in. right now, we are told there is no longer a threat, but they

home, you are with your family, it has time to settle. obviously, mike johnson, the speaker of the house was with him for a couple of hours today at least, right? what do we know about all of that and donald trump's frame of mind, if anything? >> right, he was with his friend and real estate investor steve on the golf course on the fifth hole when they were taken over to the trump golf club there and held there for a period of time before going back over to mar-a-lago. the exact movements of the family are not clear at this time, but i think you said it there. two months ago, donald trump, of course he was on his way to the republican national convention, which followed that butler shooting that very saturday, and we saw a more muted or solemn or introspective donald trump. but in terms of at least his tenor or demeanor that week in milwaukee, of course, that quickly changed, and donald trump went back to the rhetoric of calling for prosecutions,
7:12 pm
and i think the rhetoric we have become accustomed to from donald trump. i think this is a moment we will see how he proceeds, but tomorrow, he was supposed to be down at mar-a-lago. he was going to be on x, a conversation tomorrow night in which he was going to be introducing and launching his new crypto business platform, which we have little details on, that was slated for tomorrow night. then he was going to be going to michigan on tuesday. at this point in time, we are waiting to see if those events is to proceed as planned here, but we have seen some on the right, some of his allies who have been outspoken, elon musk putting outpost, others who have questioned whether donald trump and affiliations, kind of conspiracy theories, how two individuals were able to get in such close proximity of him. the secret service ultimately did their job today, based off of what law enforcement is

grand rapids, michigan, his first rally after the butler, pennsylvania assassination attempt, i was talking to folks that were coming out, they were defiant, saying that if he is here, we are going to be here. and this is a part of what makes the american electoral experience a little different than some other places. campaigns go on for a while, and yet somebody is able to go open -- and you may vehemently disagree with donald trump, but it is his right and his prerogative to be able to go up on a stage and speak the words that he desires to speak, and that people are able to safely come and hear that man's words. and this is a moment where, i think understandably, a lot of americans are questioning about the security and those under other individuals that might be coming to events like this, because chris, i can't repeat enough -- we hear folks talk about violence and that america needs to be prepared, that this could get worse, and i don't
7:16 pm
want to forecast, that is not our business here. at the same time, i can't tell you the number of conversations i have had, especially over the course of the last year, in which there are folks that are scared, and other folks that feel that there is a need for violence to resolve what our deep divides are in this nation, so i don't know what comes next, but we have seen fbi attacks, threats made to prosecutors, judges, members of congress attacks, and of course, assassination attempts on the life of former president trump. >> and even election workers. vaughn hillyard, inc. you so much. join me now, congressman glenn ivey, democrat from maryland on the homeland security committee, also a member of the task force investigating the first assassination attempt on former president trump in july. thank you so much for being with us. i was talking to your colleague, jared moscowitz, just a short time ago, and it is almost hard to fathom that while you are still investigating an assassination attempt now, there is another investigation going on.
7:17 pm
and you have said this goes beyond politics. tell us how you see what is happening right now. >> well, it's deeply disturbing. and i think it really threatens to undermine our democracy at a very fundamental time, when we have a very close and divided nation that is going to have to make a big decision with respect to who is going to be our next president going forward. and there are many other decisions and elections, you know, below that, going all the way down to the local level. but i think it is critical right now for those of us on this joint task force, for sure, and i would say -- i hope my colleagues across the board, to put the partisan politics to the side and be not only bartus -- bipartisan, i would say nonpartisan, and figure out how to address this thing, and make sure that we get nervous all the resources that are needed to provide the type of protection they need to provide, not only for our candidates, we have got an

international summit coming up, i think it is in a week or so, and the secret service is going to have to provide protection there as well. so, i think this is a challenging time for them, we've got to make sure that we get them all that they need to get the job done. we have got to hold them accountable when they fall short. >> you were briefed on security for candidates after the last attempt on donald trump's life. do you think that the secret service has made enough adjustments since then? do you feel confident in their ability to carry out their jobs? >> well, they certainly have made adjustments, but i think it is fair to say that more may need to be done. i mean, there are questions around this instance, for example, i don't know the answers to those yet, but securing a perimeter around this golf course -- golf courses are very big and it is a public golf course, but one question that i'm sure is going to come up is was there more
7:19 pm
that could have been done to divert this aspect? thank goodness that secret service agent was observant and was able to preempt any kind of assassination effort, but it is still challenging and concerning to think that this guy got back there. the other part is how did he know that donald trump was going to be going out golfing today? i think you have some questions around that, too. there are going to be others as well. i think at the end of the day, we have to make sure that the adjustments that need to be made -- i know they have made some, president biden stepped up the type of protection that has been made available by the secret service to nonpresidential figures, including former president trump , vice president harris, so that was a big step in the right direction, but i think it is clear that more needs to be done. we are going to have to have more happen there. and the short run piece of that might require -- because you can't just expand the number of
7:20 pm
secret service agents and train them in the limited amount of time we've got, so i know there is going to be increased reliance on other law enforcement agencies at the federal, state, and local levels. they do have some trained personnel. that is not ideal, i would say, but that may be where we have to go in the short run. >> let me ask you to take your congressman's hat off for a second and put your lawyer hat back on, although i am sure you use that one often in congress. your estate attorney. from a prosecutorial standpoint, because unlike the first assassination attempt, obviously, there is a suspect in custody, they are already talking about a prosecution, what are the questions you have in that regard? >> well, i think the fbi's first mission is going to be to figure out certainly whether there are any other figures or any other parties that are connected to this individual, you know? is he acting alone, is this a lone wolf scenario, or is there
7:21 pm
some sort of other group out here? because if there are other actors, they have got to run that down very, very quickly, and i think it is important to make sure that they do that front and center. they have also about the ongoing criminal investigation, this guy has been arrested, but he hasn't been indicted or convicted of anything, but i think they're going to have to make sure they pull that together in the right way. at the same time, and you heard the congressman talking a moment ago, normally, the fbi would do a criminal investigation like this, pretty much confidentially. they wouldn't be putting information out as they go, but because of the unique nature of this scenario, i think there in a situation where they're going to have to put out more information as it normally would as this moves forward. i think the american people need to hear more of what is going on there. and the other aspect to this will be the coordination with the secret service, because yes, the secret service, we averted a scenario here where there were no shots, apparently
7:22 pm
, fired at former president trump and he wasn't injured. but you know, what are the lessons they need to take away from this immediately? because, i mean, as soon as tomorrow, they're going to have to be back out there, providing protection. they're going to have to learn to make sure that if there are any kinds of gaps or challenges or concerns that came out of today, in addition to what was there previously from butler, they have got to incorporate that and make the adjustments on the fly, so we make sure we don't have these kinds of scenarios again. >> do you think the last two months of this campaign will by necessity need to look different than it has before? >> maybe. i mean, i think certainly -- i have already publicly expressed concerns about the selection of the butler site. i think there were just too many venues -- there were too many rooftops, it was a very big area, there were so many places where someone could set up to try and create a scenario where they could cause harm or fire shots. that is not the
7:23 pm
right place, in my view, to have pictured there were fairgrounds across town where you didn't have those kinds of vistas that could be used like you did there. there may be more of a move towards indoor facilities. i know that is difficult for former president trump for the reasons that were stated by your report just a few minutes ago, but that might be something we have to do more of. and then the other part, too, is he went out to play golf today, and he is a human being, he deserves to have a chance to have rest and relaxation, but we might have to rethink how we do those sorts of aspects as well. he needs to do what he needs to do to get out and speak to the voters, so he can address them and make them hear him, because that goes to the heart of the election, but you know, other types of activities like playing golf or whatever, we might have to take a harder line approach to providing more limited circumstances for those. >> do you think, congressman, there is a way to tamp down the
7:24 pm
rhetoric that so many people think contributes to this? i noticed as i read through the many social media postings by members of congress and other public officials, most of them just said i am so glad he is safe, our prayers are with former president trump and his family. almost all of them were of that ilk. and yet, there were some for example on the republican side, from senator rick scott, congressman mike collins, that were very political in nature, that were accusatory in nature. is there any way to tamp down the rhetoric, and if it can't be done, do you think we will see more of this? >> i mean, the honest answer is i don't know. i have got colleagues who say things that are certainly inflammatory, and you know, i think the wrong thing at the wrong time and in the wrong way. but you know, they don't seem
7:25 pm
to be reconsidering their approach. so, i don't know that that is going to change. and certainly, some of the troll things on the internet are very sad, very disturbing, and i am pretty sure that is not going to go away. i think the real question is what can we do, recognizing that that is there, to try and address it, combat it? i think it is important for us to push back on that kind of rhetoric and expose it, especially when it is factually inaccurate, really reckless. and some of those comments that you just reference, i think, are headed in that direction. and i think the other part is to make sure we take care of the protection part, and provide the protection that the candidates need, the spectators need, and to the extent people are falling short on the job, there has to be accountability for that. >> maryland congressman glenn ivey, thank you so much, we really appreciate your time. >> thank you. let's stay with us for special continuing coverage of what the fbi is calling another apparent assassination attempt on former

florida. back with me at this hour, nbc news law enforcement analyst and police chief for dekalb county, alexander. also with me, rob d'amico. we are learning more about 58- year-old ryan wesley routh from his past social media activity, but from what we know, including what apparently was his saying that he wanted to fight and die in ukraine, what is your take on who this guy is and what more do we need to know? >> i think that just points to his ability to do risky behavior, where he is not as concerned maybe for his life, your is trying to do things that speak to him and he is willing to take challenges and he carries them out. he went over there, he had no experience, he was older, and he tried to help in a different way. so, he is definitely in that commitment to do things, and i think that points it out here.
7:39 pm
i think him having the best [ inaudible ], he was probably doing something in preparation that he thought was going to end up maybe in a firefight, that's why he had the best on, and it was interrupted, so i think he definitely has the capability to do dangerous things. >> what you make of some of the other things that were found around him? we know there was the rifle with a scope. let me just stop there, okay? because we heard a couple of different things at the press briefing. somewhere between, they estimate, 300 to 500 yards from the president, that's where he had hidden in the bushes, and that's where he was seen. tell us about the scope, tell us about the gun, and tell us about the other things that were found at the scene. >> so, i think he was actually waiting for president trump to get closer. my view is he put the stuff there, he is probably going to
7:40 pm
put the best on, and any time that he uses scope or an optic on a rifle, your field of vision goes down, so he probably was putting it through the fence, taking a look at maybe what was the best place that he would be able to have a shot, he loses peripheral vision , and probably didn't see the secret service agent walking up on him, but i think he was preparing for it. and the fact now that i have heard it was an ak-47, which is a bit different than an ar-15, still pretty deadly, not as accurate, but around this letter and it is actually heavier and can do more damage, as opposed to a smaller, faster round of the ar-15. but it is still just as deadly. so, there is definitely a lot that was going into it. i think he was waiting for him to get closer, and then at secret service, he probably wasn't prepared for the secret service agent to be walking ahead, looking for the tree line, and then he saw his barrel sticking out.
7:41 pm
as a sniper, that is a bad tactic, because just for that reason, a barrel sticking out of bushes or a window can be seen as abnormal. instead of behind it. so, the secret service agent did the right thing. he fired, he might not have been an accurate shot, but he stopped that person because he didn't know exactly what he was looking at through that scope. >> cedric, we mentioned at the top of this show that there are at least a dozen police cars around mar-a-lago, so this happened about a 10 minute drive from where the president lives and where he is now. and security, obviously very heightened. secret service, a protocol, very heightened. so, what is the role of local police now? are they involved in the investigation, or is there job right now, given that the former president is still within that jurisdiction, to help with security? >> well, this investigation is probably going to belong to the fbi, and certainly local police will be there to provide any
7:42 pm
additional support that is needed. and the local police, local sheriff's office, including neighboring counties and west palm county as well, they are going to be very supportive of each other, making sure that [ inaudible ] in charge of this investigation has all the information, data, video footage, witness statements, whatever, they will assist in this investigation. but it will probably be secondary to the investigation where your federal agency, i would suspect fbi, will probably have the primary charge of this investigation. >> can we talk a little bit, too, about the technology? and you and i were talking about this earlier, but just the idea that somebody could write down what they saw, write down a plate number, next thing you know, it goes into the system, and really
7:43 pm
extraordinarily quickly, technology can pinpoint where he was. it is hard to imagine, isn't it, cedric, how they might have caught up with him so quickly if not for this type of technology? and how widespread is it? is it just lucky that they had it? >> well, you know, this is important, having a community that is engaged, that is aware, people who are paying attention to their environment. and this person had the wherewithal to write down the tag number that appeared suspicious. it would be interesting to know more about that, and we will, i think, over the next day or so. but that information, yes, it's into a database, it comes back, they are able to pinpoint the vehicle, where it not only is at that particular moment where they located, but where it has been in the past. so, that type of technology,
7:44 pm
along with drone technology, which we have talked about in the last session here, block here, around the importance of the utilization of technology, as we continue with the stretch, because this is the second threat of a former president over the last eight weeks. and we have to take every precaution to make sure that our presidential candidates and anyone else who are involved in politics in this nation, particularly at that level, are protected. and we have to utilize all the personal power that we have, but we also have to integrate technology. some that we know about and others -- other technologies out there, too, that very well may be hope to supplant some of those differences. because the agency is going to be stressed, and i guarantee, going forward, you're going to see much more security in and around these presidential
7:45 pm
candidates. and beyond. and that is certainly going to take a lot of personnel and resources. but intelligence gathering, intelligence information, support from the community, which is going to be hugely important, i think, in this case, to be able to identify a person. so, american citizens every day play a very important role in this, too. >> yeah, it is a good reminder, isn't it? you know, rob, i wonder, all the information that they have so far, they gave us some of it at the press conference, but of course, as you well know, they have a lot more information and they gathered a lot more just since that press conference took place, how do they use that as they approached the suspect and try to get him to talk? >> i think it is a matter of if he even talks. you know, he is probably going to get a lawyer and going to look at it that way. but everything they are going to get, as the search warrants
7:46 pm
come in for his phones, his emails, his laptop, anything else they get, they are going to put it in the hands of a very seasoned interviewer, and they're going to talk to him, they are going to try to find out what was behind us and what his motives were. did he have help, did you talk to anyone? the secret service is going to be looking at it as was there something that he did that they could have predicted this or seen that it was an issue if he wasn't on the radar? so, everyone is kind of looking at it, but you get some seasoned interviewers and their that are going to talk to him and sit down with him, and you know, it is not going to be adversarial, they are just trying to get information from him if he in fact talks adopted >> rob d'amico and cedric alexander, gentlemen, thank you so much, much appreciated. we also have just gotten a statement from the office of the vice president kamala harris, who says i am deeply disturbed by the possible assassination attempt of former president trump today. as we gather facts and i will

ryan wesley routh is in custody tonight, he is 58 years old from north carolina and suspected in the apparent assassination attempt on donald trump. joining me now, dave ehrenberg, a state attorney in palm beach county, where the apparent assassination attempt took place just hours ago. thank you so much for joining us. do we have any indication if he is talking? whether or not there is even a hint that we are getting an idea of why, if he indeed did this, why he did it? >> well, it's good to be back with you. we don't know yet if he is talking. when he was pulled over first, he kept his mouth shut, he was compliant, which tells you that
7:52 pm
he perhaps has been through this before. not specifically with the discharge, but he has had a rap sheet. as far as why he did it, he did post a bunch of bizarre social media videos, where he was complaining about the lack of support for ukraine, where he was urging more support for ukraine. he said this is a battle between good and evil. and of course, the disconnect there is he is able to see that ukraine is on the side of god, but then he can't seem to understand that by trying to assassinate a former president, he is on the side of evil. so, obviously, he is got some screws loose. >> so, let's talk a little bit about what we know about his background. there have been many, many run- ins with the law, right, in the past? >> yes, in north carolina. it doesn't seem to have much of a rap sheet here in florida. we don't know about how he got here. it did seem like he may have been trying to flee back to north carolina when he was driving on i-95 north right
7:53 pm
after the incident. he was caught in martin county about 45 minutes north of west palm beach, north of the golf club. so, he was making a beeline on i-95, ben was arrested without incident, detained, and now the feds are involved, they're the ones who are going to be pursuing charges here. my office was going to pursue a pretrial detention order and we are looking at warrants, but then the feds came in and said they are going to be taking over this investigation. >> so, what does that mean going forward that they are taking it over? >> will all be done in federal court. when he has in his initial appearance, it will be in state court, it will be before a federal magistrate in federal court. he will also be facing federal charges, federal penalties, and that means he could have some federal gun charges in addition to a host of other potential crimes here. too early to say because we don't know all the details, but if you were charged at the state level, he was facing perhaps a second-degree felony of aggravated assault with a
7:54 pm
firearm. the fact that he was pointing it apparently at a secret service agent ramp set up, but defense seem to have tougher penalties for these types of crimes, and they're going to take the lead, as they often do, as they always do in a case when it comes to an attempted assassination attempt. >> and do we know yet if he ever fired the rifle, and if he did not, does that change the charges? >> you know, it should not, because if you have the intent of committing the crime and he did something to make it happen, like point the gun at the former president -- apparently he pointed the gun at a secret service agent, you don't have to actually fire the weapon to be charged with a lot of these crimes. we don't know if you fire the weapon, although according to the reports that i have seen, is that the only shots fired came from secret service, they're the ones that fired at him. kudos to secret service, i know
7:55 pm
they got a lot of criticism after the pennsylvania incident, but here, it was like finding a needle in a haystack. they had to see someone talking an ak-47 style rifle between the gates at mar-a-lago, which is behind these big, thick bushes, so they had to be really aware. and as soon as they apparently saw him, the opened fire, so they could have avoided a real tragedy here. so, it sounds like, david, you are at the press conference, but it sounds like you know the course, you know the road that runs by it, obviously, probably have traveled on it 1 million times, how absolutely difficult is it to protect a former president of the united states on that course, given its location and given that, i guess, what we would call the outer perimeter of the course is covered in bushes? >> yeah, it is difficult, because unlike mar-a-lago, which is on palm beach island, and you could limit access to people coming over the bridge, you can close off the streets
7:56 pm
right in front -- i mean, the water buttresses parts of mar-a- lago, it is much tougher at the golf club. the golf club is about a 15 to 20 minute drive from mar-a- lago, maybe a 15 minute drive, and there are main streets on all sides here. there are streets that encompass this property, and then you have the bushes, and you could have someone who sneaks into the bushes, as we have seen before, when it comes to gawkers, people who are taking photographs of the former president while he is golfing. so, this is not the first person to go through the bushes, it just looks like the first person to do so with an ak-47 style rifle. next we are out of time, but let me ask you really quickly, how quickly could we see him in court, tomorrow? >> generally the federal system is within 48 hours. if this was the state system, he would be there tomorrow morning, but he could get up to 48 hours. >> dave ehrenberg, thank you so much for staying up with us, we appreciate it. i am chris jansing, you're watching msnbc special coverage
