8:01 pm
hello and good evening, it is 11:00 here in new york. we're following the breaking news out of west palm beach. where former president donald trump is unharmed and at home. hours after what the fbi is calling an apparent attempt on his life. at his mar-a-lago resort. it was at his golf course, earlier today. vice president harris just responded with a statement saying she is disturbed by the incident. condemning political violence and thanking the secret service officers who protected trump. president biden and harris' running mate governor tim walz have also issued statements of gratitude for the secret service and relief for trump's safety.
8:02 pm
right now there is one person in custody. this is his pingture, ryan wesley routh, age 58 according to three senior law enforcement officials briefed on the matter. let's go now to west palm beach and kathy park, what's the latest kathy. >> reporter: outside of the golf course this evening and security is still very tight several hours removed from this incident. i can tell you there hasn't been a lot of activity just some law enforcement passing by. but we know according to law enforcement who had the press conference earlier today they're crediting the quick thinking, the quick actions of a witness who saw the suspect running from the tall shrubbery that surrounds this property and this witness apparently took down the information. the vehicle information of the suspect. áp right away. and alerted authorities. that's when officials were actually able to track down the suspect along the interstate. we're told the suspect who has
8:03 pm
now been identified as 58-year- old ryan routh. he was compliant and surrendered pretty quickly. but, this all took place earlier today. right before 2:00 in the afternoon when the former president was on the golf course. some where between the fifth and sixth holes. and typically, when he is playing a round of golf. you have secret service surrounding him. they have this protect ive bubble around him and they can see if anything is going whereon. g o ing wrong. in this case they did see a rifle pointing at the former president. and obviously local state and local agencies moved in quickly. surrounded the area and secured this area. at this hour there's no longer a threat. members of the public if they have any more information about this incident they're asked to call the authorities right away, back to you. >> kathy park, thank you for
8:04 pm
that. joining me now is bobby chicon. it's late but there's no sleeping when you're the fbi and you're in charge of the investigation into the apparent second assassination attempt on a former president in just a couple of months. so what's happening right now with this investigation? >> he's been processed. he's being fingerprinted. we have our social media exploitation teams. they're going and looking at his postings which i've a story we already seen some online. and there's other analysts doing a background of what we know about him. and any prior military service, family members. they may be ringing phones and ringing doorbells tonight on people that knew him and people that associated with him. so they're running his car, his plates, social media, friends, family.
8:05 pm
all of that is being gathered right now. they'll first thing in the morning they'll be going out knocking on doors to people who knew this guy. worked with him. had any other professional association with him. they're going to try to build a picture of who this guy was and why he might do this. >> there's already been some conversations about all the specialized teams that are already working. take us inside the fbi and what kinds of teams beside this some exteam that you talked about would be working right now. >> we have the intelligence analysts that could relate to something like this. oftentimes intelligence chatter comes in. it's very in inoculous and you can't put anything behind it. some reports that he was recruiting fighters to go and
8:06 pm
fight for ukraine. i'm sure there are leads being sent over seas and any of those type of places to see if this guy had lived there or stayed there. any significant amount of times. there's leagues being sent for different offices. you have different teams doing different things. financing, his records, his social records. even if they can get his hands on they will this week get his hands on his income tax records. they're looking at all the different aspects of his life. >> what are they doing with the ak47 and the scope they recovered at the scene. >> the first thing they're going to do is has it been fired. >> they'll know that immediately, yes? >> yes, they will know that very quickly. and they probably do know that already. let me correct myself. also they're going to see where he purchased a wep if a
8:07 pm
weapon, if he acquired it illegally. one of my friends that was a former sniper said that it looked like it had been extended. any other modifications to the weapons that may have been made. they're looking at how he bought it, how long ago did he buy it. did he go to a range and practiced with it and how long ago did he do that. because that could have been in preparation of this act. they're look ing at all of that stuff. how he obtained the weapon and all those other things. >> they found at the scene ceramic tiles. and the average person thinks the average tile you put in at your house. but this is a vest that he may
8:08 pm
have had on. >> my kevlar had what we call a ceramic plate. it slid in the front. it's a square plate that's thick, it's very, very thick. it'll stop a bullet from most rounds. that is a ballistic counter measure he had. like i saw that picture it could have been hanging on the fence so that he was anticipating if secret service fired at him. he could take cover behind that ceramic plate. there are varying sizes. the one i used to wear fit my torso. they backed up the kevlar on my vest for higher fire power. it looks like the thing on the left. it's thin and square like that because it's supposed to protect the vital organs of your torso. >> we should say those are photos that were provided at the press conference today. the other thing that we know, is that tragically and
8:09 pm
disgustingly there are crimes that have been life streamed. for anybody who wants to watch it. he did have a go pro. i wonder if that suggests something to you and will one of the things they'll be able to find if they scour his profile. his online activities. whether or not he ever watched any of those. >> yeah i agree with you. i think that exactly that. i think he was probably either live streaming it or taping it. thinking he could get away and post it later. i think he was trying to get the most video and publicity. it would be to get yourself attention and things like that. so whether he was live streaming it or whether he was filming it so he could postit later so he could get away. that is yet to be seen. i'm sure they're examining that area of it. they will know already whether he's recording it. they will know whether or not
8:10 pm
he was live streaming it. so, the first thing i, thought of when i heard he had a go pro was those two things. he was either going to live stream it or going to record it to postit later. >> bobby, thank you so much for sharing your expertise. much appreciated. vice president kamala harris has released a statement on the apparent assassination attempt and said quote, as we gather the facts i will be clear, i condemn political violence. we all must do our part to ensure this incident does not lead to more violence. i'm thankful that former president trump is safe. with us now. aaron gilcrest, white house correspondent. what more have we heard from the biden administration since this apparent attempt happened? >> well, that statement you just read part of from president harris echoes what we heard from president biden a little earlier tonight. that there's, this call for an end to the political violence that we've seen as of late in
8:11 pm
this country. the vice president went on as did vice president in his statement. the secret service has directed their team to make sure the secret service has all of the resources it needs to carry out the task of protecting former president trump. we know roe. he's going to be hands on from the afteraction reporting on this from the secret service perspective. we know he's a former police officer in west palm beach, florida. and he was the deputy director of the secret service before becoming the director this summer. he is going to be deputy director. he likely would be a part of
8:12 pm
the president's daily briefings tomorrow morning when he gets his update from his tphalgts security and homeland security teams. and we'll be looking to see chris too, if we hear from the secret service director in front of the cameras potentially tomorrow as this story develops. >> aaron gillcrest thank you. up ahead we get reaction from the security committee.

8:16 pm
the nation's political leaders reacted quickly to what the fbi says was an apparent assassination attempt on donald trump. the message absolutely clear from nearly every single one of them. democratic senate majority leader chuck schumer, there's no place in this country for political violence of any kind. house minority leader jeffreys, political violence has no place in a democratic society and senate minority leader mitch mcconnell also said, there is no place for political violence
8:17 pm
in our country. republican speaker mike johnson says he spent hours with donald trump today and he thanks god for protecting him. joining me now california congressman john gerimendy. as we're reading statement after statement after statement. political violence is abhorrent. but now we're looking at the second apparent assassination attempt in a little more than two months. beyond condemning it congressman, what do we do about it? >> well, first of all, all of us should be very happen happy that there was no attempt beyond what we see here. that this, former president is safe. and that all of our candidates are safe. political violence is out and about in our country. what can we do about it. we have to beef up police
8:18 pm
operations. that was discovered at the first assassination attempt in pennsylvania. the secret service was not up to it. here in lies a role for congress. the fiscal year ends at the end of this month. right now, we're headed for a shut down. in which there would be no funding except for police activities including the secret service. but there are many many other aspects of government that need to be in play to provide the safety for all political candidates whether they are county supervisor, or a person running for president of the united states. and so all across our land, we have this problem. and we need to provide the necessary place, hence congress has a responsibility in the next 2-1/2 weeks. and we have to meet that responsibility. beyond that, we need to be alert. see something, say something. that was the mantra maybe 10
8:19 pm
years ago. see something, say something. and that requires all of us to be on the alert. not just those of us who are candidates and the people that are out and about. some people did take a picture of the car. they were able to apprehend the suspect very quickly. >> i wonder given exactly what you're saying and the fact that, clearly there's been a call for more security for donald trump particularly in light of this. but do you have confident in the secret service particularly for what, considering what you've seen over the last two months since the last incident. which caused the previous acting head of the secret service to step down. >> well i think, we should be aware of the recent congressional hearings that have set out a shotty operation for the secret service. we have a new person in charge
8:20 pm
now. an acting director. the entire organization whether the personnel are shaking up, certainly the individuals who are a part of the secret service had a rude awakening that they want to pay better attention to what's going on. obviously more resources are going to be necessary in the final what 52 days of this election and beyond. this doesn't end on election day. the danger persists on into the new administration and quite probably beyond that for some of the individuals. of concern to all of us, are the individual election workers out there and the counties at the polling places, they too are often abused and many of them have been subject to threats of violence. so this goes all the way from the bottom all the way to the top. and therefor, all of us wherever we are, we need to be paying attention and we need to be telling our neighbor, telling our friends, the
8:21 pm
rotaries whatever, it's just not acceptable. not for a county election official, somebody watching the polls or for a presidential candidate. >> let me ask you about the longer term beyond the next two months before this election, senator lyndsey gram was on fox news this morning. this was obviously before this second apparent assassination attempt. he said a big part of the problem is he thinks homeland security has just gotten too big. and the secret service should be moved out of homeland security. it should go back where it was in treasury where they had more oversight. they did much better there. do you think that's something that needs to be looked at. >> well you wouldn't want to talk to jfk about that would you. the reality is this is an ongoing problem for the american democracy. i do think that, senator graham is on to something that i have noticed on the coast guard
8:22 pm
which is also an extremely important one of our police organizations. they too are in homeland security. here's what the budgets comes in. homeland security has one big number, billions upon billions of dollars and that's it. it has to be spread out amongst many many different agencies. treasury has a more direct authority for spending. may very well be that it should be moved out of homeland security. however there are certain elements of homeland security that are absolutely essential for the secret service to do its job. and that's the intelligence functions. that's the functions dealing with it, and other related surveillance operations that do occur. so if you're going to move it you're going to have to find some way to coordinate these multiple resources that do
8:23 pm
exist in a very large and, i also believe overextended agency. >> let me ask you finally we're out of time. but we have had a couple of now of coursely of acting directors. does a permanent director need to be confirmed. put in place, get the agency on a more solid footing essentially. of leadership. >> we're up against the clock here. we have 51 days for this election and another two months, three months before the inaugural. so this agency, you can argue that let's stay with the acting director who seems to have his act together. give him the resources necessary. i'll go back to the appropriate, to the continuing resolution issue. but the reality is, to change again would probably be even more disruptive and a very short period of time. we absolutely do need permanent directors and this is an issue
8:24 pm
for mr. graham or senator graham and the senators. get with the confirmations. it's all about we have a problem in the military, a major problem in the military. and we have problems in other agencies where the senate is slow or holding up the nominations. >> california congressman john gerimendi. we appreciate you taking the time to speak with us tonight, thank you. >> thank you. >> and just ahead, more coverage on this second apparent assassination attempt on former president trump today. the message that donald trump is sending to his supporters, we're back after this. ...and more absorbent. so, while ordinary brands can't hold up, one sheet of bounty keeps working, even when wet. thursday night football on prime. it's on. welcome to thursday night football. the new england patriots take on the new york jets, as thursday night football is on. making the catch for the touchdown! it's aaron rodgers what a catch! up against a new era in new england. good show, you guys. stream thursday night football. only on prime. soon after the apparent attempted assassination of donald trump this afternoon he was taken back from the golf course to mar-a-lago where among the people who saw him was the speaker of the house. then in a fund raising e-mail, trump said he is safe and well.
8:29 pm
and in another tonight he said his resolve is stronger than ever. let's bring in jake traylor , we understand that we got another statement. >> there's been talk about outdoor rallies. there's a matter of increasing security for the former president. i was speaking with a source earlier today who told me trump was held at the golf course for quite some time after the incident before being taken back to m ar-a-lago. that's because it was safest to
8:30 pm
keep him there. and as far as the memo you're talking about. they put out two memo, first one that the former president was safe and one that this increased his resolve. if anything it was just a memo to consolidate the team and say that they're going to go forward. >> i want to play for you what chief ric bradshaw said. >> at this point he's not president. security is limited to the areas that the secret service deems possible. so i would imagine the next time he comes to the golf course, there'll probably be a little more people around the perimeter. but, the secret service did exactly what they should have
8:31 pm
done. >> you followed this campaign day in day out for months now. how has the approach to the way he interacting with voters changed if at all since the first assassination attempt. >> yeah, look we know this has been this increase security ever since the first attempted assassination. since then we have seen ramped up security. bullet-proof glass. there's been a lot of ramped up secret service efforts. in terms of precedent. we can assume going forward there's going to be more. this is not an act of precedent. there was not the security like for the president. as of now it's going to take a while for that investigation to play out. >> thank you so much. i want to bring in jolly,
8:32 pm
no longer associated with the republican party. this happened in your state, obviously. you and i have talked a lot over the last many years. about the impact that the divisiveness politics had had on the american people, the american psyche. how people feel about their government. how they feel about voting. i had several guests on earlier today two of them members of congress who are on the committee investigating the first assassination attempt. shaking their head in disbelief that here we are again. i want to ask you a question, what's going on? >> i do think, and obviously everyone joins in the universal
8:33 pm
condemnation of the actions today. but just analysis. it's shifted from debates to an argument that the other side is taking away your freedom, your liberty or your tkphrobg democracy. with the rise of donald trump, the message is donald trump is a threat to democracy. incite violence like we saw today. on the left you say you are trying to take away our rits including our suffrage, our democracy. we remember the hang mike pence in the attempts to overturn the 2020 election. there's this ere of legitimate
8:34 pm
that either side is trying to take away legitimacy freedoms. that's where i think the posture of american voters and culture has emerged. if someone is trying to take your way of life, it kind of incentivizes and increases the structure of how you respond to that. is your vote enough? and 99% of the country say yes, we practice democracy peacefully through the ballot box and we accept the result. policy changes we could actually have the conversation about and address. clearly the culture has shifted in our politics in the last 10 year. that requires a cultural shift
8:35 pm
back. but there's also policy changes if we had conversation among voters and elected leaders, perhaps we could begin to address this. >> we said how many members of congress one after the other after the other went on social media about this and virtually all have identical statements. abhorring political violence of any sort. there was one, one of the former presidents biggest supportest alice stephonic who wrote, thankfully god continues to watch over president trump. it is obviously her right to support whoever she wants. and she thought this was an opportunity to tell people to vote for donald trump in november. but i wonder if you think it will have an impact on the campaign? will it have an impact on voters? what we will see in the comes days and weeks as people start to realize it's happened again. >> i don't think it will have
8:36 pm
an impact because we don't have to look too far back coming out of butler to say the assassination attempt in butler, pennsylvania to say what was that impact. i think there will be people on the right to say because the left continues to remind the country that donald trump is a threat to democracy that creates a threat environment for the former president. people on the left i'm sure will begin to remind people of donald trump's incitement of political violence. in the last 24 hours his refusal to condemn the bomb threat in ohio after the outrageous and vile things said about the haitian community, the haitian-american community there. will it change any voters? no because i think the mentions and norms of our traditional politics have really been shattered to the extent that we can't accept a congressional swing of voters in this case. i do think what we saw coming out of butler, was the trump campaign kind of expected that the universal condemnation would mean a move in political
8:37 pm
support and we didn't see it. i don't think we will see that here either. don donald trump on his social media feed, since butler, has condemned that there's been an assassination attack. almost continuing to evoke additional sympathies and political support and it hasn't worked. i don't think it will work in this case either. >> david jolly always good to talk to you. thanks so much for coming on. appreciate it. >> coming up continuing coverage of this apparent assassination attempt. we'll have the latest on the investigation right after this short break.
8:39 pm
how can you see me squinting? i can't! i'm just telling everyone!...hey! buy one pair, get one free for back to school. visionworks. see the difference. introducing the second chance offer from betmgm. what'd he say? if you bet on a player to score the first touchdown and instead he scores the second? boom! you get your money back - in cash. straight cash? second chance, you heard? what if my guy fumbles, and some other guy scores first? second chance. what if you need a second chance to land on the field? this offer only applies to touchdowns. you alright? i hurt my spleen! get the second chance offer from betmgm. the sportsbook born in vegas.
8:41 pm
c1 law enforcement now has 58- year-old ryan wesley routh. authorities say he has a long wrap sheet including a conviction for possessing a machine gun. law enforcement analyst cedric alexander also joining us is florida state attorney for palm beach county dave aaronburg. cedric, let me start with the fact he has this long rap sheet and apparently had some interest, let me just put it simply in ukraine. according to the washington post. he was trying to muster up a
8:42 pm
rag tag army. and writing a book about his unsuccessful attempt. he once did have a conviction for possessing a machine gun or looking to perhaps put together some kind of army for ukraine. what kind of picture does this start to draw for investigators? >> you know what's going to be very interesting in this case is to be able to determine, how long he's been planning this plot. and who he may have been in association with. in terms of trying to put a team of others together. if that is true. but i certainly believe it creates a great deal of pause for law enforcement across the country particularly at the federal level. that we have to continue, they have to continue to take these types of threats very, very seriously because they are threats that are being acted
8:43 pm
on. and sometimes it's not one individual that's involved there may be others as well. who have, who could have cooperated in this assassination attempt of the former president. >> when you start to build sort of this profile of him. i don't know if you want to call it a, sociological profile, an emotional profile. however you want to look at it dave. where does that lead you in terms of building a case? >> some of the crimes he could be charged with could require intent. there's a federal charge that making it illegal to threaten a former president. and you would have to, show that that was his intent to do so. maybe his writings in his backpack are threats. then there's aggravated assault against a federal law enforcement officer here. apparently when he pointed the
8:44 pm
gun at a secret service agent, was that his intent to do that. when you look at this guy, you're looking at what motivated him. what was he trying to do. and that will come into play with the charges against him. now there's some charges that doesn't matter about intent. the fact that he's an exfelon in possession, that's a serious charge at the state or federal level and he's going to go down for that. he's facing a whole lot of hurt right now. >> the only person who came into contact with the suspect besides the police who arrested him was a witness. i don't know if we call it a contact but someone who had some visualization of what was going on. that person who saw him fleeing the scene, that person who saw him get in the car and had the where with all to write down the license plate number and call police, how important is that person to this case? cedric. >> well it's going to be hugely
8:45 pm
important. particularly as eyewitness. but that individual is going to play a significant role in terms of what it is he or she saw at that moment. what did they observe, the timing around the observation. were there others involved. so a whole host of questions during an interview you're going to be asked of that witness which is going to be key to this investigation. >> who else are the key people they want to talk to at this point, dave? >> i think anyone he has had contact with shows a level of planning. depending on, and what his intent was. if he had talked well in advance. if he had a lot of premeditation on this that would be pretty bad for him. they want to talk to people around him. his son came out and said that's not the guy i know. he would never do something like this. but his father is a convicted
8:46 pm
felon. he has a long rap sheet in north carolina, so maybe he put his head in the sand. but maybe there's others who aided and cooperated with him. they will go down too. they're going to try to do a whole profile about him to find out who he spoke with, who knew what and when. >> it was also interesting in the press conference today, cedric. i think it was the local sheriff he said, he showed no emotion when he was taken into custody. he gave no indication that he was curious about anything that was going on. does that strike you as unusual or is every potential suspect different? >> many cases like this over the year, in my experience not one involving a former president. but individuals who have been caught following the commission of a crime. many of them have appeared to
8:47 pm
have been emotionally detached. and it may very well be something mental health wise that may be going on with him to get him to the point to carry out such an act. but that's going to be determined over time once the psychological evaluation is given. even a psychological autopsy that will bring his psychological history of records. interviews of people who may have known him in the past. this disconnect of any emotion around this type of act often times is not unusual. usually people have totally detached themselves from reality often times. >> cedric alexander, you have been great to stay with me over the evening. thank you very much. much appreciated. one of the questions out of this is the capacity of the
8:48 pm
secret service to catch over donald trump and kamala harris and joe biden. one of the members of the secret service will join us after the break. but i'm asking about the added protection of prevnar 20®. if you're 19 or older with certain chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, copd, or heart disease, or are 65 or older, you are at increased risk for pneumococcal pneumonia. prevnar 20® is approved in adults to help prevent infections from 20 strains of the bacteria that cause pneumococcal pneumonia. in just one dose. don't get prevnar 20® if you've had a severe allergic reaction to the vaccine or its ingredients. adults with weakened immune systems may have a lower response to the vaccine. the most common side effects were pain and swelling at the injection site, muscle pain, fatigue, headache, and joint pain. i want to be able to keep my plans. i don't want to risk ending up in the hospital with pneumococcal pneumonia. that's why i chose prevnar 20®. ask your doctor or pharmacist about the pfizer vaccine for pneumococcal pneumonia. mom!
8:49 pm
8:52 pm
just literally a couple of minutes ago, former president trump posted on truth social i want to read it to you. i want to thank sheriff bradshaw and all the officials that kept me as the former president of the united states and the republican nominee in the upcoming presidential election safe. and then he writes in all caps, the job done was outstanding i'm very proud to be an american. just posted minutes ago by
8:53 pm
donald trump. and as the investigation on the attempted assassination of president trump continues. there's questions if the secret service has the necessary resources. >> there's a lot of struggles at the secret service for a long time because for the last 12 years there have been caps on how many people they can hire. and what i have heard ever since the last assassination attempt, i can't believe i'm saying the last assassination attempt in july, is that, the number of people who are especially trained tacticians is exceedingly low in other words the stable of people who do counter surveillance, cover evacuation or the counter assault team, those specialists who are really important in protecting the president in
8:54 pm
addition to his working shift the security detail, immediately around him. that group is really on hard times. they are far fewer of them than have been in the past. and that's a real challenge. tom earlier it's exactly right that this agency is responsible right now for protecting more than 40 people in addition to the president and now add the candidates, the vice presidential candidate on the republican side, add that to the number. and after that, after the assassination attempt you had the secret service director telling lawmakers ron rowe telling people we are beefing up to the hill the production for trump, for kamala harris, for joe biden, for the two vice presidential candidates. all of these people are getting
8:55 pm
not presidential level treatment but close, getting very, very close to presidential level treatment. they're getting support from the military and still this happened which is going to be the burning question. a smart and alert secret service agent saw a weapon and a man on the perimeter. but why would a man with a long gun be that close to donald trump. >> and they know that the bushes are there. the palm beach county sheriff ric bradshaw told reporters just how close that gunman actually was to the former president of the united states. let me play that sound. >> and at this level that he is at right now, he's not the sitting president. if he was, we would have had this entire golf course surrounded. but because he's not. security is limited to the areas that the secret service deems possible. so i would imagine the next time he comes to the golf course, there will probably be a few more people around the perimeter.
8:56 pm
but the secret service did exactly what they should have done. >> so, even if and congress would have to get involved i presume. even if let's say we need to hire more secret service agents. we need to have more people around donald trump, kamala harris, the president, all the other 40 people that you talked about. it's not like they can snap their fingers right. maybe they can call on some retired agents but, is it even realistic that they can ramp up security from now until election day. >> i want to bring up two thinks and answer, number one the candidate is probably going to have to do something different in order to protect himself. i don't think that the secret service can't protect him. but it's true, they can't snap their fingers and create a fortress around him and allow him to also golf in a course
