we all have to play in the fight to preserve our democracy. wednesday, october 23rd, i'll be in dallas for a discussion about current events. tickets are also available. i hope i get a chance to meet you at one of these events. thank you for watching, catch me back here every saturday and sunday morning from 10:00 a.m. until noon eastern. inside with jen psaki begins right now. through the bs as only he can. cross, sounding the alarm about trump's plan to steal this
9:01 am
election. he's going to join me here in studio to talk about it. and later, senator mark kelly and senator tammy baldwin on the fight of her political life , the control of the senate hanging in the balance. okay, everyone. we have just over three weeks until election day. so let's start with the good news. people running across the country, the harris campaign has more money than trump, far better organization. she and tim walz have been all over the media for the last week and have more plans for the weeks ahead, and right now, she has two incredibly popular former presidents on the trail for her. campaigning for harris in georgia today. former president barack obama will continue campaigning for harris in arizona and nevada last week. the vice president herself is
9:02 am
campaigning herself ahead of stops in the coming days. and we could hear from harris live this hour. if we do, we are going to watch it very closely. the point is this -- they are pulling out all the stops. they have tons of money. have an amazing organization. that is all good news. now, here's the absolutely mind bending part we just have to acknowledge in this part. somehow, this race is extremely close. a new national poll shows the candidates tied the 8% each. as i told you many times before, i don't put a lot of stock -- neither does national campaigns -- international poll numbers. what we should watch more closely are the battleground states. and they are very, very close across the board, too. if you are wondering, how on earth could this race be tied? believe me, you are not alone.
9:03 am
that's the most common question i get everywhere. as imperfect as polling can be, there are some interesting clues in the numbers that may be tough to hear but are important to talk about and be clear about right now, given the stakes of the election and how close it is. right now, harris has lower the next active support among latino voters and black men. what may feel even more perplexing to you about where the race stands is that this race is not happening in a vacuum or in normal times between two candidates running a normal race talking about differences on policy issues. it's happening between a well- qualified hitting vice president is very passionately about fighting for the rights of americans and protecting the constitution, and another guy who the week generating headlines that at any other time in american politics would have been disqualifying, each of them. i mean, trump continue to lie
9:04 am
about the disaster responses to hurricanes helene and milton to the detriment of the people in those dates, and just last night, he threatened to do what he accused the biden campaign of doing -- denying disaster relief to a state that needs it for political reasons. female hecklers should get -- knocked out of her. this week, he also continued to demonize migrants, even suggesting they are genetically predisposed to violence. at that all wasn't enough, and a new book from legendary reporter bob woodward that also came out this week, we learned that the chief of staff called trump a fascist to the court. it's not difficult to see why he believes that, given the completely apocalyptic language trump is using to frame the race. >> is the enemy from within. all the scum that we have to
9:05 am
deal with that hate our country. that is a bigger enemy than china and russia. you cannot give into a hospital, by the way, because the migrants have all of the beds. you cannot get your kids into a school because there are migrants there that don't even speak the language. it's unbelievable. because of biden and, let, they are given precedence over your children. >> we will not be conquered, we will not be occupied. we will not be abated. we will reclaim our sovereignty. we will reclaim our nation, and i will get back your freedom and give back your life. >> i mean, all of that is insane. if you are the harris campaign, how exactly do you run against a guy with three weeks left his closing argument is focused on wrapping up his own violent and bigoted rhetoric? someone who avoids all forms of traditional accountability and
9:06 am
campaigns, whether it is speaking in facts or releasing his medical records or even participating in a debate so people can see the contrast between the candidates. what do you do about that? as longtime democratic strategist jim carville said this week, time is short. no kidding. three weeks left. they need to be more aggressive. they don't strike me as having any aggressiveness. they have to hit hard pronto. well, you may or may not agree with that, and that's okay. we're going to talk about it. but it must've been music to carville's ears when he heard harris absolutely tee off on trumped just yesterday. >> it's clear to me that he and his team don't want the american people to really see what it is that he is doing, and whether or not he actually is fit to do the job. he is unfit for office. he talks at his rallies about fictional characters.
9:07 am
he constantly is in a state of grievance about himself. he has no plans for the american people, and he just makes things up on a full-time basis. i invite the public to watch his rallies and be the decision- maker on his acuity. and you will see in his rallies how he goes off on tangents, how he is not focused on the needs of the american people and solutions to the issues that can them the most. >> 20 me now is legendary democratic strategist james carville. a new documentary about his life and politics, called winning is everything, so dupe it, just began a theatrical run in new york city and the man never, ever hold back. i'm so happy to see you. i've been watching the documentary. i know we grew up in different moments of politics, but it is such a reminder to me of how great politics is and how it
9:08 am
worked and it is out there. i really have enjoyed it. but that aside, we got to talk about what is happening right now. i just showed a clip from harris. it was pretty tough what she said yesterday. you said you want to see more of that or things like that. what do you want to see more of? >> i like it a lot. just from what we learned in the last 48 hours. we had general flynn say that the gates of are going to rain on trump's enemies when he went. we had general millie say that he is a fascist to his core. we heard trump on fox say he's going to use the military to round up his political enemies. trump has announced that he will be giving a speech at madison square garden on october the 27th. please google madison square garden february the 10th, 1939, and see what happened there.
9:09 am
they are telling you exactly what they are going to do. they are telling you, we are going to do today fascist regime , and the press and alan dershowitz wannabes, they should've gone to al smith. he doesn't do enough longform interviews. i'm so sick of these people. the entire constitution is in jeopardy. the supreme court and clarence thomas have totally greenlighted the idea that you can round up and use the military to round up your political enemies. he's making it giant full of himself right now. >> listen, i don't think anybody should go to the al smith dinner ever, so i'm happy to go on the record on that one. you just mentioned this fox clip from this morning and i think it's so important for people to see what trump is saying. so let's just play it to make sure people see it. >> i think the bigger problems
9:10 am
are the people from within. we have some very bad people, sums people, radical left lunatics. and i think it should be very easily handled by -- if necessary, by national guard, and if really necessary, by the military. they can't let that happen. >> he is essentially saying, the military should be used. again, is telling us what he wants to do. this is not us making it up. but the thing i wanted ask you about, there are kind of seasons and campaigns and messaging, and you and i talked this summer. remember what it was kind of in the stage host harris taking over the nomination, right around when tim walz was picked, where there is a shift to painting trump and his accolades as weird, right? not scaring people. but now it seems we should go back to scaring people, because that's what they need here. is that what they need in this moment?
9:11 am
how do you explain the shift? >> first of all, i spoke at the white house dinner in 2010. >> that's okay. they are good people. our candidates, what do they need to do a few weeks before the election? >> i did not realize he would actually go on television and say i'm going to use the military to round up my lyrical enemies. when i said that, general flynn, is going to be very senior in this administration didn't say that the gates of will reign on my political enemies. when i said that, i didn't know that he was going to casual a rally at madison square garden to mimic the rally of 1939. so we have -- they are telling you -- and by the way, if they win, they are going to correctly say, we told you in election what we were going to do and you have voted or is. you have greenlighted the whole thing. and if we don't tell people about that, if these young black men -- how do you think
9:12 am
they're going to do? if you are a young black male and trump inspired a roundup of people, how well do you think you're going to do in that? you think you got nothing to lose? how about looking at american history for one time and see what can happen here. and they are telling you. we are not making this up. we can be fact checked by anybody. they have promised military roundup, they are promised the gates of will reign on their enemies. the supreme court has greenlighted it. they were asked a question, if a navy s.e.a.l. is order to assassinate a political enemy, there's nothing wrong with that. that's just part of his job. they are telling you they are doing all of this. pay attention to them right now, please. they are telling you. >> it is -- exactly. that is a ackley what he's saying. that is why i think harris is telling people to watch his rallies. i want to ask you about this.
9:13 am
one of the things that i think is so hard for the harris/walz campaign right now is that they are dealing with a guy who just lies constantly all the time. and anybody who's watch the great documentary nosy work things out with very smart people. we watch the war room. we know you kind of like to talk about how to do with our challenges in politics. what should they do? what are you talking about with all your heart guru advisers about the fact that this guy lives like he breathed? and this is not like running against mccain and romney or against george w. bush? >> he lies about everything, except he's telling the truth when he's going to have a roundup. general flynn is telling the truth when he says the gates of are going to rain on his enemies. we already know previously the things that he tried to do, how we try to involve the military. this guy is not chopped liver. he's one of the most accomplished soldiers in modern his tree of the united army.
9:14 am
he's highly educated. when he says trump is a fascist to his bones, believe general millie. believe what is at stake here. and forget about longform journalism, forget about specificity and the economic plan or whether or not jack smith is being mean to trump and focus on what's at stake here, that literally, this election is about the constitution. we are not going to have one if we lose it. and i'm not exaggerating. i'd love to debate anybody on that question. >> one of the things that stood out to me and that you obviously feel strongly about this, because you said it in longform interviews, that he needs to stop answering questions and start asking them, which is a really interesting tactic. for people that don't understand what that means, what should she start asking? >> and means -- she does four or five.
9:15 am
when you interview me, you could ask the question, i have to respond if you do out of courtesy, and that's the way that the rules are right. she's answering questions. start asking people about the constitution. start asking people about his pledge to round up americans citizens. start asking these very truthful and very important questions. ask people about whether nato should test. he is telling you that americans are a greater threat to the united states than the russians or the chinese or anybody else. that is the level that we are dealing with right now. and it's my job as a communicator, your job as a journalist, to let people know not what the polls are, but to fill out their knowledge profile to the extent that they know exactly what is it taken this election. that is our job as commentators, as journalist, as everything else. >> that is certainly what we are trying to do, and one of
9:16 am
the reasons i love talking to you to show people what it's like to sit at the table and grapple with these hard questions, which aren't always easy. your documentary is so enjoyable. i appreciate you doing that. >> so glad you liked it. thank you so much. thank you. >> absolutely. we are going to dive more into what james was just talking about, which is this new book from bob woodward. general millie called trump a fascist to his core. senator mark kelly will join me for his reaction to that. jd has had five chances to say trump lost the election, five times and each time did not. he said the transfer of power was totally peaceful in 2020. gas lighting is obviously reaching new heights and the warning signs are flashing bright red. neil joins us next. next.
9:21 am
vance stand on a debate stage and refused to say donald trump lost the 2020 election. if you thought that was bad and awkward to watch, get a little of this. >> i think there's an obsession here with focusing on 2020. i am much more worried about what happened after 2020. >> yes or no, did donald trump lose the 2020 election? >> is it okay the big technology question censored the hunter biden laptop story, which would cost donald trump millions of votes? >> i'm going to ask you again. did donald trump lose the 2020 election? >> the big technology sensor a story that independent suggestions would have cost donald trump millions of votes? >> did donald trump -- >> you answer my question, and i will answer yours. >> every time he dodged that question, got a little spicy
9:22 am
and edgy there, we got another reminder of just how concerned we should be as we approach another election and just three weeks. 2020 was just a dry one for what they intend to do this time around. if he loses, they will once again say he won, obviously. they will do anything to invalidate. if the new comments yesterday are any indication, they will try to gaslight us every step of the way. >> look. this is very simple. yes, there was a riot at the capital, but there was still a peaceful transfer of power in this country, and this is always going to happen. donald trump is committed to it, and so i might. >> totally peaceful, except for the whole violent coup at the capital he failed to really acknowledge. joining me now is former acting -- friend of the show, one of the favorites. it's great to see you. those remarks from jd vance are
9:23 am
chilling over and over again, including saying there was a peaceful transfer of power. the vice president doesn't exactly have a technical impact in terms of certifying the election, but as you look at the potential here, what are you worried he could do? >> i think vance is a barometer for the republican party, i'm here not as a voice of calm here today. i think with the vice president has said, what donald trump has said, what members of the republican party have died, leads me to think there is a coming massive press that's going to come with the election in which even if kamala harris wins the election and wins those battleground states, the trump team is going to declare victory with jd vance on his side, and they will pressure courts, pressure state legislatures, it will pressure state governors, and they will pressure congress to throw out the popular vote and get this
9:24 am
election through shenanigan. >> let's just break down all these components that could have a impact here. johnson, the current speaker of the house, played a role in 2020. there is the electoral reform act which has been passed, which is imperfect. what can other trump acolytes do? >> remember 2020, i then one 306-232. when trump challenged him, he had to run the table and win a bunch of states. right now, as the polls you are showing at the top of the show showed, it may come down one state. trump only needs to win and flip one place after november 5th in order to have an outsized impact on the election. he could do that, as you are suggesting, at the united states congress. january 6th, 2025 -- not 2021 lives this there is count the
9:25 am
votes. and congress has passed a new law called the electoral count act of 2022, which is to restrict the types of ejections congress can make. nonetheless, there's a lot of ambiguity in the law, and the republicans have shown they don't really care about the law. they care about raw power. and so with a simple majority of the house or senate saying, we don't trust this michigan boat we don't like what happened in pennsylvania, there was fraud -- they can attempt to throw out that state altogether and swing the election by themselves and take the boat away from you and me, the american people. >> i wanted to talk to you about all of this, because i think it's important for people to know what to watch for. one of the other challenges state legislatures, right? the people who are trump acolytes have become more informed, more professional in some ways about this. what are you watching and where are you watching in terms of state legislatures who are most
9:26 am
worried about ? >> any under republican control can try and do what they did in 2020 and pass a fake slate of electors and send it to washington, d.c. state governors are now under this 2022 act supposed to be in charge, not state legislatures. with the state governors could be in on it. you could have a partisan governor who says, you know, were going to throw out the boat. the key point here is trump may only need to win in these places -- state legislature, state governor, a beefsteak county board, which he tried in wayne county in michigan in 2020 or the courts or the u.s. congress. he has all of these in play, and as you heard from jd vance, if they can't admit that they lost in 2020, what makes you think, even with an overwhelming victory by kamala harris in 2024 that they will acknowledge it? >> you have so much expertise.
9:27 am
i know you been thinking about this a ton, and i know we will talk about it more and i look over to doing that, so i really appreciate you talking about it today. coming up, we are keeping a very close eye on a church in north carolina were kamala harris is set to speak any moment. but first, a fascist to the core. i will give you one guess which former president mark millie was describing there. arizona senator mark kelly is standing by and i will get his response to those comments after a very quick break. brea . smell that freedom, eh? download the my lawn app today for lawn care tips and customized plans. feed your lawn. feed it.

but now with tide oxi white, we can clean our white clothes without using bleach even works on colors. i slide tackled. i see that. it's got to be tide. >> so many of donald trump's former cabinet members or senior advisers have sounded the alarm of what he was like in office, but it's almost hard to even be surprised anymore. but this week, some comments from mark millie, we were even talking about it before the show. is not exactly a lefty progressive -- certainly did the job. bob woodward describes a
9:32 am
conversation with millie where he said this -- quote, no one has ever been is dangerous to this country as donald trump. he went on to say that donald trump is the most dangerous person ever. i had suspicions when i talked you for the book about his mental decline and so forth, but now i realized he is a total fascist. he is the most dangerous person to this country. a fascist to the court. i will never forget the intensity of his worry. >> again, this is the former chairman of the chief of staff, a man appointed by donald trump who sat with him countless times in the situation room, intimately aware of the threat facing our country, calling trump the most dangerous threat to this country. funny me now is mark kelly of arizona. he's a former navy combat pilot and astronaut. senator, it is great to see you. i just wanted to start there. there's obviously a lot i want
9:33 am
to get to, but i do want to write there. you served in the military for more than two decades. i'm sure you don't take anything general millie says lightly. i certainly don't. what was your reaction to those words in that recording i just ran through? >> well, i know general millie. when i was my first year or so in the senate, he was still the chairman of the joint chiefs. i have tremendous respect for him, and he knows donald trump. so this isn't surprising. he knows the former president very well. and you combine that with the fact that half of his former cabinet members, including his vice president, have not endorsed him. we have sitting u.s. senators that have said they are not going to vote for him. so i think the message to the american people is that this guy is clearly unfit for office. the amount of damage he did to our country as president is unprecedented, shredding our
9:34 am
alliances. general millie is obviously concerned about our country safety and national sick dirty. so i would take his words seriously here. that donald trump should not be president again, and we need to work really hard, not only democrats, but independence, republicans need to work really hard over the next 20 something days to make sure the kamala harris is the next president. >> no question about it. there are a lot of reports and a lot of things trump says. i'm a believer they have to take him at his word, but there's something i wanted to ask you about. they also repeatedly discussed the prospect of other generals were critical of trump being called back up to active duty and court-martialed trump wins next month. millie said, quote, he is saying it and it is not just him. it's the people around him.
9:35 am
i want to ask you this, because there's so much news and so much information there. i don't want to overreact or over exaggerate, but you think that is something that can happen? is there anything we can do to stop it? >> well, i served 25 years in the navy, i'm a retired navy captain. if you are retired from the military, you could be called back to active duty for a number of reasons. so it's not like that threat is unfounded and not difficult to do. there is a mechanism in place to bring retired members back. once you retire from the military, you are getting a pension, a paycheck, you could be called back for a number of reasons. so sure, i would be concerned if i was -- he has made it very clear that his second presidency of donald trump would be one of retribution. he has said that.
9:36 am
>> no question. take him at his word. that's a lesson we are all living with at this moment. there is a new nbc poll that shows the race pretty much tied nationally. i don't put a lot of stock in national polls. i care more about what is happening in state. in arizona, there's recent polls that show that trump is up by about five point over kamala harris. the new york times siena poll. holes are imperfect, but you have a sense of what's going on in the ground. do you think that's about right? are there areas where there are can earns? what more do you think the harris/walz team could be doing to regain that ground just over three weeks from the election? >> i think we are doing what we need to do, which is organizing. just this past weekend, we knocked on 26,000 doors, made half 1 million phone calls. we are reaching out to all different and very diverse communities. the tribal
9:37 am
nations, latinos, even the lds community. there's an lds organization for vice president harris. republicans were doing events across the state. i am confident she's going to win arizona. it is going to be close, though. it was close in 2020 where the biden/harris ticket won by 2000 votes. but we've got 20 field offices, we've got thousands of volunteers, hundreds of staff. we are doing the work. ultimately, a state like arizona, it's probably going to come back to a -- around less than 1%. this isn't rocket science. if it was rocket science, i could help. but all of this is about which team works harder. which campaign works harder. i can't really speak for the trump campaign, but for democrats and folks that want vice president harris to be the
9:38 am
next president and want to move on from donald trump, are putting in the work. people should be concerned about a close election. i want to encourage folks that are out there that they are a little bit nervous about how this is owing to go and it being so tight, they can go on the website, they can sign up for a shift, they can are knocking on doors and making phone calls, because that's the difference between winning and losing. >> i always enjoy talking to you. thank you so much for joining me today. >> thank you. >> coming up, kamala harris is speaking right now in north carolina during a campaign swing through that battleground state today. we will let you know if she makes any news. but up next, donald trump calls for a news organization to lose its broadcasting license as his campaign works with elon musk to suppress damaging information on tweeter. these guys sure don't mind a lot of censorship. some thoughts about that when we come back. back.

>> so if you notice throughout this campaign, donald trump has basically been masquerading as a champion of the first amendment. he and his allies like elon musk have argued that a trump administration would protect free speech from what they claimed is a looming threat of censorship. >> i will destroy the illegal censorship regime and bring back free speech in america. and i will bring back free speech in america because it has been taken away. >> if we don't have free speech, that we just don't have a free country. >> the other side wants to think we are free to most beach. >> we actually do have a threat to democracy, but unfortunately, it's not the threat the kamala harris and tim walz want to talk about. it's the threat of censorship. >> the censorship cartel must be dismantled and destroyed, and it must happen immediately.
9:43 am
>> but here's the thing. the only free speech trump cares about is his own. and for all of those claims about censorship, they certainly seem to like it. i mean, just this week, we learned that trump's folks collaborated with elon musk's team at twitter to suppress material that might hurt trump's chances in november. the new york times reports that after he reported his publication of hacked trump campaign information last month, they connected to prevent leaks of that material. x eventually complied, suspending the reporter who posted it. here's the thing. remember elon musk has defended all sorts of vile things on his lap form, all sorts of untruthful things on his platform in the name of the speech. including this information about voting, about vaccines, and more recently, about hurricane relief. and it's only now that he seems to be drawing a line.
9:44 am
the fact is, these guys only seem to appreciate the first amendment when it benefits them. donald trump is so fixated on an editorial decision made by cbs in a 60 minutes interview that is threatening to revoke their broadcasting license. that, of course, follow suspect to do the same to abc after the debate he bombed last month all because he fact checked his life with truth. and this is nothing new. time and time again, trump has shown nothing but contempt for the speech. his level more threats that i can count not only against news networks, and any person and any institution the challenges them. his ego is apparently so fragile, he simply doesn't believe his critics are entitled to have a voice. >> we certainly don't want to stifle free speech, but that's no longer free speech. to me, free speech is not when you see something good and you purposely write bad. that is very dangerous speech.

should come as no surprise, given that he once called for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the constitution. those are his words plain as day. that's the thing about the first amendment. it allows people like trump to say things that are fundamentally un-american, just like that. we will be right back. back.

about your race in wisconsin, but i do think this issue of the impact of the trump teams lies on hurricane relief, and communities impacted, it tells a bigger story about this information in this moment. what do you make of how the vice presidency are doing it, and how are you seeing this reading of disinformation impacting people in wisconsin and even your race? >> absolutely. first of all, i've been following the disinformation around the two hurricanes and fema relief, and it is just absolutely tragic. it recalls for me so much of the disinformation during the pandemic. during the trump administration. and this fostering of trying to have folks distrust government and government programs. this is really -- we have got
9:53 am
to figure out larger ways to address misinformation, disinformation. you know, knowing the sources is really, really critical. i will tell you, the way -- the way it's happening and unfolding here in wisconsin is that when you look at a very tight race for u.s. senate, almost all the ads being aired right now are false attack ads. lies, personal attacks. as my race got tighter and tighter in the battleground state of wisconsin, we saw the political report taken from a leading democrat to a pure tossup last week. it also didn't escape the notice of mitch mcconnell. and he announced in the last two weeks $23 million of spending in the closing days. we are 23 days out. that sounds like about $1 million a day. unbelievable overwhelming media
9:54 am
advantage that they have right now, and my opponent is also a multimillionaire who we project has put in $30 million of his own wealth to buy a senate seat. so the difference between my opponent and i could be more stark. he celebrated the overturning of roe. i'm leading the fight to codify roe v wade. he wants to repeal the affordable care act in its entirety, i helped write it. is going after social security and medicare. wants to cut benefits. i want to make sure that those programs are strong and will be around for generations to come. so people want to help me fight back, pitch and whatever you can to help us close this gap with regard to television advertising. >> i have to say, senator, i want to ask you about mitch mcconnell flooding your race. i want to ask about how close it is and what people should know.
9:55 am
it's important for people to pay attention to, because there's an assumption that races like yours, you're going to do sail across the finish line, and you are fighting in a tough race. let me ask you about just what is happening with the harris campaign in wisconsin and just what is happening at the top of the ticket. because wisconsin is always a close race. as you have said already, it been won by less than one point the last two presidential cycles. what do you wish people would know who assume wisconsin is going to be a race she sails across the finish line easily on, you sail across the finish line in terms of what is happening that with the dynamics on the ground. >> yeah. so we are considered one of the blixt dates. but that didn't happen in 2016 when trump won wisconsin by 7/10 of 1%. joe biden won with 6/10 of 1%.

i see the presidential race in the state of wisconsin as tied right now. that's what most of the polls have said. and both candidates are frequenting wisconsin. but i am very much, you know, focused on my own race in terms of what we need to do is show up. and not just show up in blue counties, but purple counties and red counties. it's always what i've done. find the voters where they are. i see a really great ground game in wisconsin. we have volunteers throughout the state that are committed to knocking on doors and getting out the boat. but showing up matters. and so, you know, meeting voters where they are. i was honored this past week to accept the endorsement of the wisconsin farm bureau. first time in 20 years that a democrat has gotten that endorsement. but i think it's a product of my work. showing up matters. >> no question about it. senator tammy baldwin. so important to understand the

dynamics in your race. control of the senate means judges, mean supreme court justices, means confirmation of nominees. it's so important. appreciate you joining me. thank you so much. we will be right back. back. every day. just soak, activate and wash. to clean, tone and refresh. that's a 3x better clean. olay.
