[ music ]
4:01 pm
we are just a little more than three weeks away until election day, and as of today, the ritz has become a dead heat spread new nbc news polling released today as the race tied with vice president harris and donald trump both at 48% nationally among registered voters but it is a noticeable drop from last month's poll that had harris leading trump by five points. the comparison couldn't be more stark compared to the last time an incumbent vice president ran for the top of the ticket. at this point in 2000, then vice president al gore at a 60% approval rating compared to harris's now 43%. and while gore won the popular vote, the supreme court allowed bush to win the electoral college. so, how did we get here? how is the race this close? after all, trump has been in favor of interviews with podcast boroughs, ranting nonsensically about circles,
4:02 pm
even appearing at coachella yesterday, of all places, in his last-minute hail mary strategy for blue states. meanwhile, harris has been acting like a presidential candidate. she has been holding townhomes with voters, she has spent all of last week going on a heavy- duty media blitz. but what if that is part of the problem. what is adhering to presidential norms is the thing that is hurting her campaign? after all, hers as positioned herself as a new candidate for the future. >> we have heard tonight two very different visions for our country but one that is focused on the future and the other that is focused on the past. it is time to turn the page. america is ready for a new way forward. i believe in my soul and heart, the american people are ready to turn the page. >> absolutely. it was a message anxious democratic voters needed and wanted to hear after joe biden finally caved to pressure and dropped out of the race. but since then, she hasn't
4:03 pm
distanced herself from joe biden, she has held on tight to him and his policies. in fact, he or she is in just two different interviews in the past few days. >> would you have done something differently than president biden during the past four years? >> there is not a thing that comes to mind, in terms of -- and i have been a part of most of the decisions that have had impact. >> what were the major changes be and what would stay the same? >> sure, well, i mean, i'm obviously not joe biden. also, i think it's important to say, with 28 days to go, i'm not donald trump. >> i am not joe biden, but i am not donald trump. the problem is that distinction may not be enough for voters. the closer she has kept herself to biden's unpopular policies, especially on gaza, the more harmful it has been for the campaign. and instead of meeting with the leaders of the uncommitted movement for example to ease their concerns about israel's
4:04 pm
assault on gaza, to create daylight between his stance on the war and hers on the war, paris is instead touting the support of republicans like liz cheney. she has even promised to convene a bipartisan group of advisers, including republicans, on policy, should she went. comparing her position today to a complete political novice, donald trump back in 2016, eight years ago when voters didn't know how he would govern, they still voted him into office. today, voters know exactly who he is and who he will be as president. so much so that according to usa today's david jackson, trump is falling better today than he was back in 2016 and 2020. now, this poll should serve as a wake-up call for democrats. there is one silver lining here, that same nbc news poll shows abortion is the top motivating issue, at 22%, above immigration, protecting democracy, and the cost of living.
4:05 pm
it is an issue harris has been able to successfully campaign on, making her a clear and concise messenger for reproductive rights in this country. with trump, we know what we are getting. he stands for fascism, authoritarianism, mass deportation of immigrants. so much so that his former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, retired general mark milley, has referred to him as fascist to the corporate so, the question for democrats in the last stretch remains what are you for? what is vice president kamala harris for? and will that be enough to stop donald trump's authoritarian vision for this country? we have an all-star panel to break this down for us. ameshia cross, democratic strategist and former obama campaign adviser, nichols, and the co-host of democracy-ish, and the book go back where you came from and other helpful recommendations on how to become american. it is great to have all three of you with us. i will start with you, what is your understanding, how do you decipher the fact that this race is as close as it is, when
4:06 pm
we know who donald trump is, what he has done, what he represents, and what he is promising to do? >> i think it is explained, because the voters know all those things as well. we are in a culture that is buoyed by disinformation and misinformation on a regular basis, specifically those who are utilizing social media and things like youtube as their top reliable news source. we are also seeing more and more people who are latching onto this anti-immigrant, xenophobic sentiment. that isn't something that is holistically just american, we saw it with brexit in europe as well, we are seeing time and time again that some of these very dark, categorically ridiculous commentaries about immigrants, migrants specifically, are being touted by the right, but are also being eaten up by individuals who showed, quite frankly, no better. but in addition to that, i think it is also because, again, america's original sin is racism. america has a habit of going
4:07 pm
back, and unfortunately, we have seen with this do-nothing congress as it has been touted, but they have done something republican congress has done a lot when it comes to the house specifically, they worked strategically to dismantle civil rights. they work to strip people of their community, specifically people who look like me and you are brown across this country. i think we have to understand who we are as a nation and where we are going. a refusal to accept the multiculturalism that exists here, and i think that is represented very strongly in somebody like kamala harris running, she represents that multiculturalism, she represents diversity, she represents and obviously is a woman. and there is a healthy bit of misogyny that is really unfortunate going on across the country as well. all of those things come to bear this election cycle, and i think that's why the polls are extremely tight. >> tom, same question to you, but before i get you to answer, let me play for you michael tyler, the communications director for the harris
4:08 pm
campaign, he was just on with my colleague, the reverend al sharpton, earlier to react to this new poll, here is what you said: >> this is going to be a margin of error race down until november 5th. for us as a campaign down the final stretch year, it is about using every tool that we have at our disposal to reach those voters that are ultimately going to decide the pathway to 270 electoral votes. >> so, the word that i am interested in there, tom, and feel free to take this however you want, is reach voters, as opposed to activate voters or mobilize voters or inspire voters, and i'm wondering if that is the right strategy at this point, so close to the race, trying to appeal to undecided -- if there are any undecided voters, i don't believe there personally are any left in this country, but trying to reach people who don't know who they're going to vote for, as opposed to really energize those who want to vote for you. >> yeah, the notion that you have got to reach these voters, and somehow there is one more thing kamala harris says that is finally going to press the lever and change the outcome.
4:09 pm
and i think part of the problem is that there are millions of voters who just -- who are still thinking that this is just a normal election and that the outcome isn't that serious. and that includes, i think, people that know donald trump is dangerous, they know he is terrible, but still can't bring themselves to think about not voting for the republican candidate. i also think that problem of energizing voters is something that, you know, the devils the democratic party. i mean, for example, if you have the youth vote, if you had reliable kind of turnout among typical democratic constituencies, the election would be over. but this is always the problem, that democrats go through, where people say i'm not excited about and i haven't
4:10 pm
really been paying attention. republicans are always excited to vote, they're always motivated, they pay close attention and they vote every single time, and that is how we end up with minority rule in this country, because we have a majority -- donald trump will not win a majority of the popular vote again, he is going to try to thread the needle through two or three states, and we are going to end up with minority rule, because so many democratic voters just can't bring themselves to get organized and go vote and that is really a tragedy. >> tom brings up such an important point about the energy factor here and republicans have it, democrats don't have it. it was one thing to say people didn't know who donald trump would be as president back in 2016, he has only gotten worse since then. here he is today on fox escalating his dangerous rhetoric, watch: >> i think the bigger problem is the enemy from within. we are some sick people, radical left lunatics. and it should be very easily
4:11 pm
handled by -- if necessary, by national guard, or if really necessary, by the military. >> i mean, sick, sick stuff, talking about the enemy from within, we know what he means by all of that. he is pulling better today than he did in 2016 and 2020. how do you explain that, and is it a mistake for democrats to move to the center, try to win the center, as opposed to mobilizing and energizing those that are watching and wanting more from the vice president in her campaign? >> white supremacy dies hard in america, trump has gone full fascist, full races, it is a is been this way, people just didn't pay attention because they wanted to talk it up to economic anxiety. it is not economic anxiety. we have seen much of his cruel, hateful, xenophobic, misogynistic, anti-semitic. just in the past month, what happens, is based adores him. we cannot normalize it, or establishment cannot or
4:12 pm
normalize it. when general millie calls him a total fascist, pay attention to him. they don't pay attention to me or ameisha, we are just people of color. listen to the general who called him a total fascist. i think for democrats, they have to be -- stop being timid. call him out on this, call him a fascist. quote other people, quote jd vance who called him america's hitler. bring it back up. this is a man who will take away your freedom and rights. when it comes to healthcare, he has no plan, he will take away your social security. this man is an authoritarian and uses his own quotes against him. and they will bear hug liz cheney and they will drop kick her if she tries to leave but i think they should be in and, expand by going for a bold, progressive message, and compare and contrast openly. don't bear hug to anyone. there is no need for tim walz to say, jd vance, i agree with you. no, go against them, say this
4:13 pm
man is an extremist. and this is why. and what is common to us is not common to most people, folks, so this is why they need to make that case, because ameisha was right, we are dealing with disinformation and a right-wing ecosystem that is beholden to these lies, while republicans right now are willing to kill themselves because they believe donald trump and his conspiracy theories during the hurricane that is killing the republican base, that is what we are dealing with, an extreme fascist movement, thank you for coming to my ted talk. >> [ laughter ] ameisha, democrats should take solace that reproductive rights is the top-rated issue for the nbc poll that we showed earlier. the vice president has been a great communicator and advocate on that issue. to his point, what do democrats need to do to capitalize on that in these last few weeks to make it front and center, to mobilize people within the left and the right to vote on this issue? >> put names and faces to it, bring out women and families in the battleground states who

about you have got to show how you are different from biden, you have to tell us about your housing plan, you have to give us all the wonky details, and you notice that trump has wisely just faded out. look, adopting another debate was smart, because debates hurt trump. and as a result, we end up talking about what is harris's strategy, why aren't young voters more energized? well maybe because we are not talking about the fact that donald trump this morning talked about using the national guard and the united states military against the american citizens, that is why. and that message needs to come out. that message, along with all the other things we have talked about here, needs to be delivered by the candidate instead of this constant demand to say, well, younger voters want to know what you're going to do about school costs. you know what? let's save the constitution first, then we can figure out the other stuff, but i think -- i mean, maybe in a sense, a full on progressive agenda or

months. i think there are a lot of reasons for it, including people simply wanting life to make sense. they want their lives to be interesting, they want to be part of a great drama, but i will always add, if you are sending death threats to a meteorologist, it is not because you think he is wrong, it is because you are worried that you think you are wrong. it is this deep insecurity that maybe the weather is unpredictable and maybe hurricanes just happen and when a meteorologist tells you that, you want to send him bible verses, because you believe there is a big sort of pattern and there are people responsible and that somehow it can be fixed. and this is common to all conspiracy theories. what is unusual now, what has really happened that has changed things in the past few years is that you have an entire political party, an entire media ecosystem around
4:24 pm
that political party that is devoted to actually pushing these things, making them seem legitimate, and getting people to believe them by just mainlining it into them through their eyeballs and through their computers and their screens 24 hours a day. that is the part, i think, that we couldn't see coming, that an entire party would be devoted to lying just to gain power. >> ameisha, trump has helped amplify lies about the storm's response, among others. what does the harris campaign do with this? >> i think they have been doing it, they have been calling out the lies, they have also been amplifying, quite frankly, the republicans on the ground in many of these southern states, who are actually elected officials, either locally or at a statewide capacity, who have also call these things out as lies. people are just getting $750, the democrats aren't somehow creating hurricanes and targeting them to hit southern states, this is not a thing. and i think we have to understand -- to a point that

was made a few moments ago, this is not a new thing for conservatives, quite frankly. the anti-science, the anti- legitimacy, we don't believe in institutions, we don't believe in educated individuals or people who have the background and certifications to have these conversations, this is something that they had been chipping away at for a very long time, whether it was anti- vaxxers, the people spread the lies during the covid-19 pandemic, the people who put a target on anthony fauci's, the same people are back again threatening urologists and threatening to the fema director. we have seen time and time again, a push away from science, a push away from intellectual capacity, a push away from things that are honest and true, into something else. and it is dangerous because people's lives are at stake. and what we have seen from kamala harris and joe biden when they have toward these areas is bringing people back to the norm that says we should all come together in times of crisis, we should not be latching onto crazy conspiracy theories. science exists for a reason, there is an explanation for
