5:03 pm
2020. the stakes are even higher. because a few months ago, the united states supreme court just told the former president that he would be essentially immune from anything he does while he's in office. now just imagine donald trump with no guardrails, right? he, who has vowed, if reelected he will be a dictator on day one. that he would whack denies the department of justice against his political enemies. he, who has called for the quote, termination of the constitution of the united states -- >> lock them up! lock him up! lock him up! >> hold on. hold on. hold on. >> lock him up!

take my word for it, i've said for a while now, watch his rallies. listen to his words, he tells us who he is, and he tells us what he would do if he is elected president. so, here tonight, i will show you an example of donald trump's worldview and intentions. please roll the clip. >> the worst people are the enemies from within, the enemy from within. >> those people are more dangerous, the enemy from within, then russia and china. >> these people should be put in jail the way they talk about our judges that are justices. >> if you had one really violent day. >> one rough hour. and i mean real rough. >> the bigger problem are the people from within, we have some bad people.

5:07 pm
know who he would target because he has attacked them before. journalists, whose stories he doesn't like. election officials, who refused to cheat by finding extra votes for him. the judges, who insist on following the law instead of bending to his will. this is among the reasons i believe so strongly that a second trump term would be a huge risk for america and dangerous. donald trump is increasingly unstable and unhinged. and he is out for unchecked power,
5:08 pm
that's what he's looking for. he wants to send the military after american citizens. he has worked to prevent women from making their own health care decisions. and threaten your fundamental freedoms and rights, like the freedom to vote, the freedom to be safe from gun violence, the freedom to breathe clean air, love who you love openly and with pride. so here in pennsylvania i say, to those who know best, when freedom is on the line, americans always answer the call. we always answer the call. and in this election --

bless the united states of america. >> you've been listening to vice president kamala harris at a campaign rally in erie, pennsylvania, delivering some of her sharpest and strongest attacks to date against donald trump. she went right after his comments about using the military against american citizens who he calls, quote, his words, the enemy from within, and she replayed those comments on a big screen. i don't even know if we have seen that before. she also said, he's referring to anyone who doesn't support him, anyone who will not bend to his will. those are part of her remarks. join me now is stacy abrams, voting rights activists and former democratic leader of the georgia house who i know was watching that rally as well. it's great to see you. thank you for joining me and i want to talk about so much including voter suppression efforts out there and the state of georgia. i want to start with the vice presidents remarks. i mean, i heard them at some of her strongest remarks, rebuke of what is at stake here, of the threat of trump to date, when you hear, and i want to ask you something, she's asking us all to do, let's talk about what it means. when you hear trump talk about
5:14 pm
the enemy from within, what do you hear? >> i hear echoes of viktor orban, vladimir putin, nicholas madero. autocrats begin by vilifying the press, demonizing and dehumanizing their opponents and co-opting the judiciary, and he's already done the first two and now he's coming after the third. which is, instead of us being opponents, he's calling us enemies, you dehumanize someone by saying that they don't possess an equality of spirit and capacity, and when he calls other americans the enemy, when he says that he should send the national guard or even the military after american citizens, he is doing his best to say that the only way to survive as a country is to essentially abdicate responsibility to the constitution. and we should not be surprised
5:15 pm
by this because he's been building up to it and he has promised us, this is what he intends to do. and because we have a supreme court that says he can't be prosecuted for doing so, we should be deeply concerned and i think the vice president is absolutely correct and not only call out his rhetoric but to remind us that rhetoric becomes policy, if he becomes president. >> no question about it. we have to listen to what he says. he said things he would do in 2015 and 2016 and then he did them. when you are trying to crush the media, when you are trying to silence people out there and make it harder to vote, that's not a sign of strength, that's a sign of weakness. dictators can't get elected on their own regard. if you are the harris team, what do you do to combat that because that's still the

perception that some people have? >> it's hard to take the abstract and make it real and i and she's doing the exact right thing which is pulling on recent comments, showing the words coming out of his own mouth and connecting the dots to our lived reality. this is the same man the city would eliminate abortion and pack the supreme court to steal a woman's right to choose. so we can no longer assume, during the first administration they said, you taken seriously but not literally. we now have to take them literally. and right now, what she's doing so effectively is connecting the dots between his rhetoric and the real policies that he has put in place, and that he will put in place. if you overload people and say he's just crazy or i think unhinged is the right word but then you have to bring it back to their lived experience and their reality. he will take away the $35 cap on insulin. he will eliminate access to

capital for small businesses especially those owned by minorities. he will do what he can to put people back in jail, and to turn this into a police state because as you said, he is a weak man who is relying on the military power and his ability to undermine others, to prop himself up. >> let me ask you about some of the strategies that she's deploying and what you think works and doesn't. one of the key groups that she needs to continue appealing to is obviously young voters including young black men, and there's been some poles lately, i'd love to know your take but first i want to play something that former president obama said this last week i should say, about this and see what you think about it. let's play that and we will talk after. >> on the other side you have someone who has consistently shown this regard, not just for the communities but for you, as a person. and you are thinking about

sitting out? i'm speaking to men directly. part of it makes me think that well, you just aren't feeling the idea of having a woman as president. and you're coming up with other alternatives and other reasons for that. >> so i worked for him for 10 years, he had a lot that he wanted to get off his chest. why do you think, what do you think is driving younger black men to trump and what do you think at this point, the harris team can do about it? >> i would say two things, number 1, vice president harris has been very intentional from the start of this campaign to treat every single voting cohort with the respect they are to meaning she does not take anyone for granted and she has worked hard to cultivate
5:19 pm
and curate policies that speak to their needs. that said, sexism is of course still part of our politics, there's a reason she's only the second woman to ever hold the nomination to be president. sexism is a part of it. we have to recognize that for young black men in particular, they have had a very difficult time in the last 15 years. and donald trump has been part of that but so have the policies that he plans to reinstate, policies like stop and frisk do not target universally, they target young black men. access to capital is one of the strongest barriers to starting your own small business and he will eliminate that, when you hear him say he doesn't believe in dei, he is saying he doesn't believe that people of color, namely young black men should have access to capital. what he has said and what he will do is return us to a time when young black men are walled off from opportunity. now, what he's willing to do is to lie about his intentions, and if you listen to his lies, it's like listening to santa claus, but santa claus is real -- >> poor santa. >> you don't vote for santa, you vote for a leader who sees
5:20 pm
you and is willing to acknowledge that there are weaknesses in our existing policies and that's what kamala harris is doing. she is saying we have not done everything we need to. that's why we hold elections, that's why we hold office but she has a plan to address those challenges, and as someone who was cast as unappealing to young black man when i ran, i will tell you that i received strong support, identical to the african american gentleman who was on the ticket with me. raphael warnock and i encourage us not to over read into this moment, her willingness to speak directly to a community is a sign of respect. and the fact that there's a weakness or softness of the numbers, doesn't mean that that's how election day is going to show up. this is

saying that this the population that needs to hear more and she's responding to that need by answering the call and putting out an agenda and saying here i am, ask me questions, i'm ready to serve you. >> what happens on election day is the most important thing and you and i have talked about sexism before. okay, i read your transcript. always learn so much from you about voter suppression and what we should be watching. you have this amazing new podcast and i recognize -- recommended so highly. but you've been sounding the alarm for years, and you recently noted that there have been 291 restrictive bills introduced in states across the country related to voting. that's a shocking number and one of the things is your home state of georgia where the georgia state election board approved a new rule that would require a hand count of the number of ballots cast on election days. my neighbors have asked me about this, and what the impact would be because people care so deeply about what's happening in georgia and so many states.
5:22 pm
do you see any scenario in the next 22 days where that issue is resolved before election day? >> well yes, right now, there is a pending court case and we are hopeful that the judge listening will require the state election board to actually follow the law. what they have done is put in place rules that they would like to follow but the law is clear, this is a ministerial post, they have absolute responsibilities and their intention is to put failure points in the system. but i also encourage folks to start voting early. early voting starts tomorrow in georgia. one of the best ways to counter the bad actions and let's be clear, the state election board is the latest in a line of bad actions perpetrated by republicans starting with governor kemp, and supported unfortunately by the secretary of state, that has weakened access to the, we can win anyway by understanding what the intention is and doing our best to over well the polls.

lulled into a form of justification in supporting trump. but there is a whole lot of evidence that trump actually does what he says he's going to do. he said he might not accept the election results in 2020 and when he lost, he refused to accept the results. he pledged to investigate his political opponents and he did weaponized the department of justice. he said he would put in place a muslim banned at institute a muslim band. he said he would appoint justices to overturn roe v wade and he did and they did. all of the evidence from the last time he was president points to the fact that we should believe him when he tells us what he's planning. joining me now, joe walsh, who has left the republican party and washington post opinion columnist, dana milbank whose been at both trump and harris rallies. dana, you've covered a lot of presidential campaigns. i want to start with the tactic of playing your opponent at your rally, have you seen anything like that? >> i saw trump do that to

it's often said that he's unhinged but you have to factor that in because i mean, he's saying a lot of crazy things about people like us, the enemy of the people, the enemy within. but i think the thing you are seeing most of all about trump, this time around, is he just seems to be genuinely off his rocker, and even that trump rallies i've even talked to his own supporters who kind of see that and they are kind of nervous about the direction. so i think it's absolutely right that kamala harris is calling this out. >> we were talking during the break, they are still going to vote for him. so this is kind of what i've been mulling about as i've been talking about before we started our conversation. you know, he is going to do what he says he's going to do. there's a bit of a license, i think jd vance is a big part of the strategy, of lulling people into, well it's going to be fine. i know you've left the republican party but what should the harris team be doing, is doing this enough, what else should they be doing to elevate this issue?

vice president, it fell on nixon's shoulders, you can see it right there to oversee the joint sessions of congress to count the electoral votes on january 6th of 1961. put aside everything that you think you know about richard nixon for a second and watch how he certified his own defeat. >> this the first time in 100 years that a candidate for the presidency announced the results of an election in which, he was defeated, and announced the victory of his opponent. i do not think that we could have a more striking and eloquent example of the stability of our constitutional system. our campaign, no matter how hard-fought they may be. no matter how close the election may turn out to be, those who lose accept the verdict and we support those
5:51 pm
who win. >> i mean, can you imagine, i know the answer to this, can you imagine trump ever uttering those words?'s i'm joined now by best-selling author chris wallace, host of the chris wallace show on cnn. this was such an interesting book. as someone who loves politics, it brought us inside the details of that 1960 election. as we all know, and you've covered, i mean, history repeats, which is what is so interesting, one of the things that struck me is that people don't always think of richard nixon as being honorable. yet, what he did was more honorable, i mean, he was a more honorable loser than donald trump. as you are writing this book, how were you thinking about that election and that
5:52 pm
transition, and what that history says about the state of our democracy today? >> hi, jen, thank you for having me on the show. this is exactly why i wanted to write this book, particularly right now. it's a great story, for small, kennedy, next, the first televised debate. the election, may well have been stolen, but what strikes me so and why i wanted to write it now, is the relevance to where we've been since 2020. nixon, for a variety of reasons
5:53 pm
but i think primarily because it was unthinkable that you can have a country at the height of the cold war, where people didn't know who the president was, while it was being adjudicated through the courts, he accepted his defeat even though i think he felt it was stolen, and as you saw there on january 6th, in 1961. he certified kennedy's victory. and you know, compare that, and we do explicitly in the book, to donald trump, and where he has taken this country ever since election night in 2020, through all of the lies, all of the made-up fraud, january 6th, the effort to storm the capital and to stop the certification of the vote. it's like 1960 stands everything that we see right now on its head. >> it was such a reminder to me, and i hope to people out there who read it. i lived through a lot of transitions, too, bush and obama didn't exactly love each other, but it was a smooth transition of power. you also note that nixon's loss in 1960 led to him to resort to more cutthroat tactics, obviously we know that through history. and it played out, which eventually led to watergate.
5:54 pm
similarly, and i would be interested in what you think about this comparison, obviously trump losing in 2020, it's led to a more aggressive approach to this election and what he may want to do postelection, how do you think in terms of lessons from history, bitterness and anger, how do you think it applies, as it applied to nixon, how does it apply now? >> it's interesting, jen, nixon had a reputation as being a dirty politician. that's where he got the nickname tricky dick. some people have suggested may be, his defeat in 1960, and how nicely he played with the origin story of the villain, sort of like the origin story of the joker, and clearly, in some of the watergate tapes, you can hear his anger and bitterness, hey, kennedy stole the election from me in 1960, all bets are off in 1972, with
5:55 pm
watergate, and there's no question, it had an impact on him, a very bad impact, and i think it is definitely, you know, you you could say trump was already a dangerous character before but clearly, losing the 2020 election has not improved his sense of fair play or thinking about the country over his own personal benefit. >> lots to learn from history. we pulled a little something out of the archives, chris because you were once a correspondent at nbc news. so, i want to just play part of an interview that you did with donald trump at the 1988 republican convention. we will see if you remember it and we will talk about it on the other side. >> you have flirted with the idea of politics, now you're here at your first national convention, does that get you interested in possibly making a plunge.
5:56 pm
>> who told you i flirted. i didn't know that i 40. >> you took out new york times full-page ad to talk about your policies. >> i love the country but you will have probably george bush as the next president. >> i wasn't talking about this year, mr. trump. >> do you remember that? what did you think about him back then? >> look, this is the art of the deal guy, you know, he was a completely different character. he was colorful, he wasn't running the country, he wasn't making decisions about our rights or foreign-policy, and you know, he was there on the floor, i just happened to see him, actually as an interviewer, what pleases me is i came back at him when he said what you mean i'm flirting, and i said you took out a full-page ad. and i said well, we are not talking about this year. it was a good back and forth. you know, donald trump, the
5:57 pm
real estate mogul is a very different character and you think about him or are entertained by him, but when you are talking about donald trump the potential president of the united states. >> thank you for joining me, we will be right back and i will hand things over to rachel, shortly. as americans, there's one thing we can all agree on. the promise of our constitution and the hope that liberty and justice is for all people. but here's the truth. attacks on our constitutional rights, yours and mine are greater than they've ever been. the right for all to vote. reproductive rights. the rights of immigrant families. the right to equal justice for black, brown and lgbtq+
