for broad-based tariffs, a group of economists weighed in and they thought it would hurt economic growth and raise inflation. it would face consumers with higher prices for a broad range of goods that we buy that we do not even make in america. toys and other goods of that sort. it would raise the costs for all producers that are reliant on inputs from abroad that would be subject to tariffs. >> what you think so many people are into this idea? yeah, tariffs. let's go with this. what you laid out is exactly how tariffs work. it broadly is understood. given that, why is the idea of

more tariffs, why do people like it? >> we have seen over decades a loss of good manufacturing jobs in the u.s. real incomes of individuals who do not have a high school individual is -- education. china's admission to the world trade organization in the early 2000's. technical change that helped skilled workers and harmed less skilled workers. it really resulted in job losses that are serious and wage stagnation for lots of people in america who do not have a college education. this is something that is critical to address. president biden has addressed it. it is central to his thinking about what to do over the term and the trifecta of legislation

and the infrastructure act, chips and science act, semiconductors act, is designed to support strategic areas that will create good jobs all over the country, especially for people who do not have a college education and our strategic and important for our future. this is not at the expense of trade. it is not, make everything at home. trade brings tremendous benefits. millions and millions of jobs are dependent on exports to the rest of the world. foreign direct investment in the u.s. supports millions of jobs. trade is important and we cannot be totally self-reliant. >> you have been to china many

times. there is skepticism and criticism of china's trade policies and practices that make it unfair for u.s. businesses. is there anything we should start doing now so we can become more competitive with china? >> pieces of legislation i referred to are the critical things that we need to become more competitive. we are investing heavily in some conductor manufacturing. clean energy, electric vehicles, and restoring infrastructure. these are critical things to be more competitive. we are very concerned about china's unfair trade practices in some sectors we want to have a presence in the u.s. i am not saying that we want to be the only producer of these goods in the global economy.

but, we want resilient supply chains and some domestic presence. in addition to creating tax incentives that could have a dramatic effect to boost private investment in all of these sectors, we have seen hundreds of billions of dollars of investment in the sectors. for a time, we need to protect these industries from china's unfair trade practices. >> one thing we have in this country in huge supply, we have massive deficits in this country. it doesn't matter who the next president will be. when you look at both proposals, the debt will only grow. have we stopped caring about debt and deficits in this country? it does not seem like you're doing anything to address it. >> biden administration has not stopped caring about it and we are trying to do things about

it. we signed a deal that was passed through congress that reduces tenure deficits by just over $1 trillion. president biden proposed a budget that contains an additional $3 trillion of deficit reduction over the next decade. the way in which that is accomplished is partly by boosting revenues which have fallen below historically normal levels. what we are asking in the tax proposals in that budget are for wealthy individuals and corporations to pay their fair share. >> what you think should happen next year when the trump tax cuts expire? >> president biden has proposed continuing the tax cuts for

individuals making under $400,000 and expanding the child tax credit. he would propose paying for those, funding additional tax increases or spending cuts or savings above the $3 trillion we propose to pay for that. what we would oppose our simply extending all of the tax cuts that mainly benefit wealthy individuals and corporations. the cbo has said that would raise deficits by $5 trillion over 10 years. >> is there a number you have in your mind when you think about getting companies,

getting corporations, to pay the right amount of taxes? it is a fine line. you want them to pay more, but not so much more that they will leave the u.s. is there a number in your mind? >> we proposed a 20% corporate tax rate and other kinds of loophole closures including raising the tax rates on the income of u.s. multinationals that are abroad. which we should do as part of 137 country tax agreement that we negotiated. other countries are now raising the minimum taxes on their multinationals to 15%. we think that we should do that, as well. >> i know about a time but i want to ask you personally because i have the privilege of interviewing you four times. we are in new york city. we are not far from where you grew up. when you were a girl in bay ridge brooklyn -- did you ever

experts say the poll workers could inject more distrust into the public and help boost bolster court cases the talent election results. with me tonight to discuss more, however. and matthew dowd. a former george weijia. bush strategist . matt, this is very important as we were discussing. the collectors plot started in the states the last time. i got out of the states and made its way to the u.s. congress. what does this particular plot, the plan that we see, what does it mean for election day and the days after? >> you are right to say, in 2020 it was more happenstance and it emerged a bit

organically at times. it did not get organized until the very end. the difference this time is that it is more funded and better organized and there are more people leading in a state- by-state basis to do this. it is scary. on one hand we have a more better funded nefarious actors in the course of this. the good news, which we have to protect democracy and people's right to vote, we have a more robust system in place where loss of been passed where secretaries of state and governors put in place things the hold this in place and we have better people running the systems at this time than we did the last time. we have better secretaries of state in many states doing it in a better way. yes, it is more organized and better funded, but i think we have more robust systems in place than we did in 2020. >> one of the functions that

came out of the revelations of these fake a collector plot. and the potential disruptions in the states. legislation was passed. people are now paying attention. poll workers all over the country, including in green bay, wisconsin, they are preparing for all kinds of situations. they are game dating and different scenarios. you think most americans really understand how much preparation effort is now going into this process? to be clear, the majority of these people are volunteers. in him want to emphasize that. what i think about, you have election officials as state and local levels that have been doing this for years. even when they deploy. who i think about are the volunteers. i think about shay moss and

ruby freeman. imagine them being harassed in the moment they are counting votes. not just online. not after the election. in that moment. that is what i am concerned about. i am concerned about what protections will be for the election workers when a false claim or a frivolous claim is made by one of the right-wing activists. the other piece, they are planted there to find evidence for the court cases that donald trump did not have evidence for in 2020. all of the claims were dismissed across the country because they were frivolous and baseless. now with the individuals who can say they saw anything, they can just find evidence to support whatever claims will come, dependent on the outcome, it should raise red flags. are systems in place right now that will protect the folks that volunteered their time at the polls these election days. i encourage everyone to go out

there and volunteered to be a poll worker. i think we can all agree on that. that, let's switch gears. mitch mcconnell privately referred to donald trump as, quote unquote, stupid, and despicable human being after the 2020 election. i don't think that those comments shock anyone, knowing what happened. obviously, we are hotalking abo between the 2020 election and january 6th. we remember how mitch mcconnell, kevin mccarthy, lots of republicans had choice words for trump then but now are supporting him. how much do these two men dislike each other? and does it matter that he said this then? he gave this over to the president, wrote the book, and now mitch mcconnell is still at, yes, but i'm voting for donald trump. >> i think, like each atof you, tend to judge people by what they do and not by what they say. i think mitch mcconnell, like

many republicans, who says all these negative things, he has said that donald trump was unfit for office, but simultaneously, while mitch mcconnell was majority leader, he helped facilitate donald trump in all of his ilpower mov and everything he did, including mitch mcconnell stood up and would not impeach donald trump. i don't know how you would do this if you think someone is unfit for office in the course of this. they hated each other. mitch mcconnell and donald trump, they don't like each other, but in the end, i actually think in many ways i am more disturbed by people like mitch mcconnell and others like him then donaldt trump. donald trump is who he is. we all see him. he doesn't make any bones about who he is and this is how he acts. these other people like to act simultaneously by releasing the stuff and leaking out, i don't care for donald trump, but when the time comes that they can take a stand to do something about it, they refused to do ed it. >> watch people's actions. they matter. juanita, let's switch gears. the washington post is reporting that democrats have seizedem control of the

fundraising race in key house and senate races, house and senate. i think there are a lot of democrats there very optimistic about the house. others are not as bullish about the senate. senator gary peters would like to have a word on that. what does this mean this late in the campaign? how can this make a difference? >> these races were always going to be an uphill battle i am glad they are getting this attention and energy because without control of congress, a potential harris administratione wouldn't be very effective in getting a lot done. i'm glad that this injection of cash is happening because it shows momentum. it shows energy. it shows ability and resources to get out the vote campaigns as part of the coordinate efforts in the states and in these localities. of course, it doesn't guarantee a win, but it shows d that democrats have an advantage that they can leverage here. my two follow-up questions to these numbers is, how much of that came from within the district or within the state that shows local grassroots support that can be translated
