9:37 pm
video shows sinwar. according to his israeli official, overnight there was a fierce battle in southern gaza. troops initially had no idea he was at the location. his body was discovered today and later identified using dna tests and dental records. today, in a stunning announcement, the israeli military confirmed that it had killed the political and military leader of hamas, yahya sinwar. sinwar's death marks a major inflection point in the war between israel and hamas, which has killed more than 42,000 people in gaza. nearly 100 hostages remain captive. today, some of their families took to the streets in israel to demand that prime minister netanyahu secure a cease-fire deal. hours ago, vice president kamala harris expressed optimism that elena zhukova's -- sinwar's death might do it. >> the threat hamas poses to israel must be eliminated.
9:38 pm
today, there is clear process towards that goal. hamas is decimated and its leadership is eliminated. this moment gives us an opportunity to finally end the war in gaza. >> in tandem with that, president biden says he is dispatching secretary of state antony blinken to israel. prime minister netanyahu is throwing cold water on all of that. in a statement today, he declared, the war is not yet over. joining me now is the host of on msnbc, someone who has spent years reporting on the ground in the middle east. ayman, it is great to see you. we have seen time and time again this administration expressed either words of caution directed towards israel, cautious optimism that a cease-fire deal is near. we are seeing that once again.
9:39 pm
netanyahu seems to be in a different place on this. how hopeful are you at the end of the war is insight? >> i am not very hopeful. i know that there is a sense of optimism now that hamas' leadership has been destroyed but i think there are two dynamics at play here. one, israel still needs to secure the hostages. it is unclear right now and i think this is an important question that is getting a little bit lost today. where are the hostages? for the last couple of months, we have been told by the israelis through this narrative that they were underground, in the tunnels, surrounded by waiting hostages, making it impossible to rescue them or kill him because it would jeopardize the safety and the life of the hostages. that narrative seems to have now vanished. in the videos we saw, he was alone. he was fighting. he died in that house. there were no hostages around. so where are the hostages? if you do find the hostages,
9:40 pm
who are you going to negotiate with to secure the release of those hostages? sinwar is killed. head of the military wing is killed. all of them might be killed. who is on the ground that is physically going to negotiate with you about the release of these hostages? >> you are so right. the circumstances of his death, he is out there and he is, i believe, killed by idf trainees. right? this is all seemingly incredible haphazard how it happens. it doesn't seem like israel has any intelligence. >> again, that is why there are a lot of questions that need to be asked about the intelligence going into what they have been doing in gaza for the past year. 42,000 palestinians killed. there have been moments when israel has targeted specific people but if they could destroy gaza and kill everybody who was in there, as we saw today, in this kind of random way, you come across the leader of hamas. it raises questions as to, what are you doing? what are you targeting at this point in the process?
9:41 pm
back to your second point that you brought up. the point about, where does the work go from here? there is momentum in israel right now to look at the region and say, you have destroyed and killed hamas' leadership. this is now the moment to seize that initiative. there have been those in this country that have been salivating at regime change for decades. there are people who say, this is the window in which we can use this dynamic change that is happening in the region to go after iran and bring to pass this change. they have done this for years with support of many in the united states. >> you mentioned that top hamas negotiators have all been executed, they have all been killed. who fills that back end? is it more extreme voices? where does the next negotiator come from? >> if you look at the trajectory over the course of the last 15 years, it has
9:42 pm
gradually gotten more extreme and more militant, less pragmatic. when you think about people who met with jimmy carter back in the day and said they would be willing to do this solution, hamas members said that to jimmy carter. jimmy carter is on the record saying that was not a secret. that was on the table at one point. it is hard to imagine how hamas' leadership, which has gotten gradually more militant, more extreme, is going to come back to that. more importantly, to see who emerges as a leader with in the organization that has credibility on what is happening inside of gaza but at the same time can command the organization externally. >> right. that is a huge question. ayman, thank you. thank you for visiting during this critical moment for all of us. ayman's show airs weekends at 7:00 p.m. eastern here on msnbc. coming up, elon musk tells a pennsylvania crowd that if kamala harris wins, there won't be swing states anymore because

from within. when the trump administration used the military to go after people who opposed donald trump. >> of course not. of course not. if you go back to the summer -- i am glad you asked the question because it is so preposterous -- >> it is the guy in the brick soup that does it for me. jd vance today said it would be preposterous to believe that trump would turn the american military against the american people. what was it that trump said this weekend again? >> people from within. we have some very bad people. we have some sick people. radical left lunatics. and it should be very easily handled by, if necessary, by national guard or if really necessary, by the military. >> just checking. jd vance is trying his best to downplay just how extreme trumps rhetoric has become and to appeal to voters more broadly, or at least more constitutionally. meanwhile, trump continues to just double down.
9:49 pm
listen to the question trump got from a former registered republican at the town hall last night. >> i am a republican. no longer registered to vote. i want to give you the opportunity to try to win back my vote. okay. you are, i want to say action, and maybe inaction during your presidency and the last few years sort of was a little disturbing to me. you know, what happened during january 6th and the fact that, you know, you waited so long to take action while your supporters were attacking the capital. if you would answer these questions for me, i would really appreciate it. you know, your own vice president doesn't want to support you now. >> thank you. >> that is called an offramp.
9:50 pm
trump was essentially handed an opportunity to distance himself from the whole fascism thing and in turn appealed to the sort of voters who enjoy the u.s. constitution. but instead, he did this. >> the vice president, i disagree with him on what he did. i totally disagree with what he did. very importantly, you had hundreds of thousands of people come to washington. they didn't come because of me. they can because of the election. they thought it was a rigged election and that is why they came. some of those people went down to the capital. i said, peacefully and patriotically, nothing done wrong at all. nothing done wrong. action was taken, strong action. ashley babbitt was killed. nobody was killed. no guns there. when i say these are people who walks down, this is a tiny percentage overall, which nobody sees, and nobody shows. it was a day of love.

9:58 pm
the optics of the whole thing if you close your eyes you might think this guy was running for president of the united states, he walked out to only in america, a song that has been at every ted cruz rally or some donald trump rallies, for a long time. there was a moment where he invited a cute kid onto the stage and signed his hats, you know he was clearly entertained almost smitten by kind of this delaware county local republican audience, yes, you would think that this person is the candidate and he's not known for having a small ego. but, he had a lot of fun, i wouldn't say he was great on the stump but, i don't know if that's really the bar we should judge him against. >> you've done some great reporting on this can you talk a little bit about elon musk's personal evolution in terms of his enthusiasm for trump, someone he wasn't even sure he wanted to endorse? not that many months ago?
9:59 pm
>> yes, you know if you talked to elon musk a year ago this october, he was quietly very pro ron desantis and if you talked to him six months ago he was not really that pro-trump, this is somebody who thinks that america is dying if we do not get a grip on illegal immigration. and he became a pro-trump fanatic in part because he was getting lots of attention and got lots of access to trump, trump himself almost feels mesmerized by elon and as we now know he has put $75 million into pro-trump super pack. but this is not his disposition. a year ago. you know elon i think has been somewhat radicalized in real time, we see his tweets. we see how he talks about politics and emigration. about the border and crying. to some extent this is actually pretty simple story like you can see his replies to random eggheads on the internet and
10:00 pm
can understand what motivates him and that was a lot of what he talked about today in pennsylvania. >> i think it's like the evolution of a radical because it sort of on the fence support for trump and then full support for trump and now it's an embrace for the market do conspiracy theories that the far right fringe, dominion voting machines on stage tonight, right? >> he was, it was funny there was one point where that elon would really in which i thought was pretty revealing at one point there was a delaware county activist trying to give him a book about election fraud. and you could tell he was at first his interest was piqued and he obviously is interested in this topic but he wouldn't take the book. and you could tell it almost reminded me like someone trying to give a politician a hat to wear in the politician like is intrigued by the hat but they know they should not put the hat on. he would not take the book. then afterwards i talked to the guy who tried to give him the book and he said that elon handed it like a politician which you know is true, he did. >> elon 2028, teddy, in the audience. for work, dark maga.
