8:01 pm
show it 6:00 pm eastern. on sunday we will react to the brand-new interview with kamala harris after she joins al sharpton on politics nation at 5:00 pm eastern. that is tonight's last word. the 11th hour with stephanie ruhle starts now. there are now just 18 days left for kamala harris and donald trump to rally voters. >> i am here and she is not. >> bow sulte not bear false witness to my neighbor. >> when you commit to respecting and encouraging a peaceful transfer of power? >> you had a peaceful transfer of power. >> the american people are exhausted with his gas lighting. >> critics say your terrace will be like a national sales tax. >> he thinks china pays for them.
8:02 pm
this is the same guy that thought mexico would pay for the wall. >> the bigger problem is the enemy from within. >> he is running a fascist campaign. >> watches rallies. he is confused. he is ranting and rambling. >> she has done a lot more to take questions lately. >> are they stupid? >> i would never say that about the american people. >> enough. we are ready to turn the page. good evening and welcome. we are now just 18 days away from the election and the race for the white house seems to be in a dead heat.
8:03 pm
kamala harris and donald trump are racing around the country, especially to battleground states looking to fire up supporters and went over the undecided voters. that does not mean they are taking the same approach. kamala harris held rallies and salvor interviews one after another. donald trump canceled or postponed several interviews and attended town halls including one that was packed with supporters. let us not forget another that turned into a 39 minute dance party to a playlist that ended with the song memory from cats. without let's bring in our nightcap crew. welcome to you all. i want to start with the week.
8:04 pm
kamala harris seems that this media blitz, every week has a new theme. i sat down with her during economy we commend she was focused on women. then this week focused on black men in america. what are your thoughts? you can no longer say she is avoiding the media. >> it is interesting. we looked at the unwavering black woman voter. you are 98% likely to vote for the democrats. the same can't be said for black men. you have seen this push when former president obama asked blackman to vote for kamala harris and you've seen it considered this week with her media strategy, including going on shows like the shade room. she is appealing to blackmail voters. when she is on mainstream media she is mentioning she is a lewis hamilton fan.
8:05 pm
there is media blitz but also the opportunity agenda for black men. it is a weekly drive. >> what is your thought? >> she is good at this. she can go to different places and do well. it is in contrast to trumpet had a weird dance vest. she should press that advantage. every time she tries a new area she seems to do well. she can associate stuff and he is volatile and unstable and weak. now she is focusing on men and that is where she needs to stay. she is struggling with noncollege educated white men. she has that strategy of turning out voters but she has to get moderates. >> these reports that she is slipping or the democratic party is starting to slip, where is it coming from?
8:06 pm
>> i cringe when i hear those things. black voters are not monolithic. what she is doing that is so smart is not only reaching out to men, i think you are right howard stern was great. >> charlemagne was critical of president biden. >> it wasn't soft. today, she did a great interview with union members. she keeps underscoring the differences between working- class people and a rich guy that was handed $400 million. i love that she is dipping all over the place. >> she put her head in the mouth of the lion and went on fox. what was your take and i want to know how did fox news speak about it after? before the interview, the entire narrative was she was only doing soft all easy interviews. she was never stepping up. she stepped up to the plate.
8:07 pm
>> fox news is obviously a right-wing media organization. she goes there and we have seen them do this. she sits down with the interview and it is contentious. he had a fairly contentious interview with trump in 2023. what happens on fox, instantaneously, he is followed by laura inkerman jesse watters and sean hannity. they take little pieces and dump on it. they spend the entire hour and invite guests that say here's why it was terrible. you get a half hour interview in which kamala harris is talking to voters that might be watching fox. than the people to whom she is trying to appeal. you do that for half an hour
8:08 pm
and then he have three hours of laura ingram and sean hannity and jesse watters saying the worst, most of noxious and false information. >> they are going to crush her no matter what. think about the woman that watches fox. my mother. she is watching kamala harris and said donald trump said kamala harris is stupid. she is not that stupid. donald trump said she is weak that she is not so weak. there is a portion of voters who might not like kamala harris policies but they are going to watch that interview and it lycie, she is not how donald trump described her. >> fear going to get bits of information they have never gotten because fox doesn't go into that. also, i was amazed that he actually addressed her as madame vice president. he was so hostile compared to how he was when he interviewed trump. he interrupted her 38 times. i was surprised he did.
8:09 pm
38 times in 27 minutes. for women watching, i know what that is like to be silenced and interrupted. that might go somewhere. >> is there hope that it's a fox news house and someone that's never going to not vote for trump and other people tuning in and catching this whether it is a daughter or son, is that the hoping going to fox? >> do you think this puts donald trump in a corner? however she was going to do, this puts them in a corner? they were saying she is junior varsity and weak. she now put her head in the mouth of a lion while donald trump sent home or talked to friends. does this not put pressure on him to do something with a non-
8:10 pm
friendly audience? >> he keeps canceling right gimmick >> she is putting pressure on him and that's what she should continue to do. the aggressive. she is calling him out saying he is wimpy. the further she goes she continues to show she is tough. not everyone that watches fox is stupid. it plays on military bases. a lot of folks watch and say she's not as bad as i thought. i don't like that kind i don't like her but she is better. that is the contrast she has to push. she just has to show she is less bad. >> and she wants to appeal to everybody. not just her base. >> it is important to remember the context. the race is even. donald trump doesn't have to do this. he has his base support. 47% of the electorate.
8:11 pm
republicans and older voters tend to vote more frequently and consistently. kamala harris is not in that position. all of these things that we are talking about are her trying to convince people it is worth taking the time to vote. if you can get some of those skeptical republicans or a few of them to vote yes. do i think this was on that, i don't. it wasn't terribly useful. those people then watch laura ingram. >> we keep hearing she speaks the word salad gave nonanswers. even if you don't like her answers, she is actually answering the questions. earlier this week when donald trump spoke of the economic club, he was asked repeatedly, do you think google should break up?'s answer was about voter rolls in virginia. you can tell me you don't like that kamala harris -- we could
8:12 pm
say what does it mean when kamala harris talks about holistic economy, you might not like her word choices that she is actually answering the question. whether or not google breaks up has nothing to do with undocumented immigrants in virginia. >> the answer to everything is not undocumented immigrants. it is not. she is reaching all kinds of people and showing she is not a moron. the names he calls her. he always talks about lack of intelligence. stop it. >> people have been waiting for policy. a month ago a lot of the questions were i don't know what she stands for. she is doing a blitzen talking about reproductive rights and an agenda for black men. she is getting her policy out. >> and she is talking about taxes think i will lower your taxes. i've talked about this before. tim walz using him strategically. that is how you move
8:13 pm
independence. 51% of the country is not affiliated and they want to hear taxes in the border and national security and how you will make life better. she is proving the case in going everywhere showing she can handle it. that is what she has to continue to do. >> 40% of the country votes with the party anyway. >> when did you have an option to vote for an independent payment >> they consistently vote with one party or the other. >> because they don't have an option. absolutely. what independent option to have? >> they have jill stein. >> not a lot of people are sitting down undecided. it is not the case that 50% is not sure. my point is, there are not that
8:14 pm
many people that exist in the space between. most independence consistently vote with one party. they are still in a habit of doing that. it's not that they're sitting back and waiting for more information. these are the least engaged political actors. they are not the ones drilling the deepest on policy. >> there has been tons of noise. donald trump last night spoke at the dinner. a catholic charity dinner that existed for 79 years. until last night, both candidates would show up and people from both parties. it is a big fancy new york dinner. you could easily argue she needs to be in battleground states and people don't care. do you think there was an opportunity? i would argue that kamala harris is best day or best night of her campaign was
8:15 pm
on the debate stage where she stood next to donald trump. the argument that she is weak, that goes out the window. that may have been her last opportunity to stand in a room shoulder to shoulder. yes it is a room of new yorkers who most likely know who they are voting for but that dinner and those comments are all over the country. do you think there is a missed opportunity that she could have shown america yet again. she is arguing that he missed a step. worry about his age and his 39 minute dance party. question why he is canceling events. she said i want to see medical records. wasn't that a chance to say here i am standing tall and confident and look at the sky snoozing over a diet coke. >> you are right. she is great when it side-by- side. i will say this, more and more of her rallies she is showing video of him. not the same as standing in the same room but there is a contrast with him slobbering and not making sense or calling us enemies of the people or
8:16 pm
enemy within. the contrast is there. i initially thought she doesn't need to be there. i have some issues with the dinner and honoring a guy that is thrice married. wanting to take on the country. stuff like that. problematic. i think you are right. she shines when she is in the room. she is a prosecutor. she knows how to handle that verbally. >> i don't know if it was a missed opportunity. the debate is a different stage. that is new york elite. it doesn't have the same appeal. whether the skit with molly shannon landed, that is what i saw today i wasn't seeing the clips.
8:17 pm
>> that is interesting. i was in the room last night. it is funny that the takeaway was her moment. >> that is my algorithm. >> as the independent i would see both of them. the molly shannon thing was a dud. she missed an opportunity to go toe to toe with him. she would have signed. one thing i will take issue with i don't think her best moment was the debate. i think it was the convention. she stood up and looked like the president. she was tough and strong. any time she is not next to him, he is out of the picture, she can show what the future looks like where she is president and owning the stage and is the boss. >> i don't think the dinner has any real effect. i do want to make an ancillary point, can we stop calling it a dance party. was opera and stuffy place at
8:18 pm
mar-a-lago. for the viewers. >> a one-man dance party. >> it was the sway party. >> her theme week next week is potentially man week. she may go on joe rogan. what is your thought on this? >> i think back to 2016 where people talk about white women handed trump the election. is kamala harris going after white men? that is who listens to joe rogan. young white men. it is interesting. i don't think a lot of people are undecided. that you are not enthused about is it. what i'm interested in is call her daddy and joe rogan, canst that campaign really turn the means into actual people. i don't know yet.
8:19 pm
>> the goal isn't to convince the listeners to vote for harris as much as it is to say, she is fine and he is fine and voting is a hassle, stay home. she's just trying to mute their interest in trump. >> she has to do rogan. he gets 20 times the average audience of the show on this network or cnn are everywhere. >> when donald trump when on the field on and they had a ridiculous conversation about cocaine i thought this is a disaster, it wasn't. it almost normalized him. i could hear youngman saying he is -- i didn't know what it guis. >> it normalizes him. when you have him on stage and
8:20 pm
continues to normalize him. >> rogan connects and moves people. 60% of young people are independent and unaffiliated. they are registering but not picking a party. many are voting for the first time. they are taking it seriously and joe rogan talks about tough stuff. he connects with the gut punch of america. she needs more of that. >> doesn't it silence this. if she doesn't show up, donald trump feels that space convincing you see is super woke . at the least, she shows up and stops that slow bleed of life. >> they will still say she is not doing enough. it doesn't matter what she does. i think what is cool, i think she should do rogan. he may help connect her with the uninterested voters. there are still hundreds of millions of people that don't
8:21 pm
vote. >> he might endorse her. he's going to be more objective than people give him credit for. i have listened to him from the beginning. he is not in the bag for trump. he may even come out feeling better about her. >> has he endorse anybody? >> no but he has turned on people. for a long time donald trump thought he had joe rogan. he is not in trump's pocket. when we come back, third- party candidates and the impact. stack later, remembering the trump presidency.
8:22 pm
8:23 pm
8:24 pm
8:25 pm
third-party candidates, could be the spoilers.
8:26 pm
we are talking much about third- party candidates. they are out there. rfk is on the ballot in wisconsin. wisconsin. should candidates be worried? >> yes. if she can capture a couple of thousand people in michigan rfk junior can capture people they can upset the apple cart. i have been covering this for three years. people underestimated the impact of rfk not to win, not even to attract the majority. he is attracting a radical specific group. it might be enough to tip one or two swing states. most independents want an alternative. they don't want rfk or jill stein. they're not real independence. they fill a void. right now they have said the objective is to be kamala harris.
8:27 pm
20 any number of things, jill stein is here for you. people like putin in trump and disruption. >> that begs the question, what do you do? >> she is revealing jill stein in running ads against jill stein. if you are independent, don't waste your vote. >> i would be focused less on the third parties but knew on the newer voters and figuring out if they are voting for the parties they want to. one of the bright spots in the numbers was the amount of newly registered voters. i don't necessarily share the same views that it is as is dangerous as it is but i could be wrong.
8:28 pm
in michigan there is a large arab-american voting base. over 100,000 voted uncommitted in the primary. they might not go out and vote for donald trump but how concerned should vp harris be? >> i will never forget, watching the reviews. >> it is all theater. watching the exact number of votes that hillary needed. they went to jill stein and i think gary johnson was his name. i have to ask, what is the endgame. then what does she want to do? i have never figured that out. >> some of them want power. jill stein is a grifter. >> when you don't know what is behind you. >> the question here about how
8:29 pm
both campaigns can offset the votes is by making sure she has more voters coming out that will support her. new voters, i'm going to draw a graph. if you look at turnout over percentage of people by age it goes like this. you have a blip at the beginning. this end has been the democratic and. they are liberals mostly. that is where democrats had trouble. the race has a lot of support at the other end of the spectrum. there is still a base of people that are less likely to vote. they are targeting stein in revealing who she is but they also need to make sure they are doing everything to get people that are even thinking about voting. >> when you say people that are less likely, are you saying yes,
8:30 pm
we know the diehard fans are going to vote all day every day yesterday tomorrow and they are going to a rally. just because her base is not as fervent, does that mean her voters are less enthused? >> structurally it is -- that younger people vote. they don't own a home. they move all the times of the have to reregister and they forget. there are all these factors. >> they just don't know. >> one of the biggest google searches is what do i wear to vote. >> what i thought she was about to say, we can't figure out what the policies are. i thought your essay the young people interested
