welcome back to the second hour of "mornings or weekend." let's continue with important stories from the week. chris, i want to talk about the gas lighting comment that kamala harris made. specifically, she was referring to one of donald trump's many, very extreme, very dangerous comments that are either lies or whitening threats. he called january 6th a day of love. i know that his friends at fox news that he was talking to to make jokes actually think january 6th is a joke, and they actually call it, the january 6th play now, don't play that card. it wasn't an insurrection. there is an effort here to change the truth that the american people thought right in front of their eyes, your thoughts? >> here we are in the election
4:02 am
coming up now, the 2024 election, that was the 2020 election, and they went to the capitol, that crowd, the mob, went there to stop the count, to stop the counting of the election of 2020. that is what they were there for me not to protest or make noise, with points horns on or any crazy thing they were doing. they were trying to stop the vote. they were trying to stop the vice president from certifying it. that is what they were doing. it was anti-democratic. it was not the storming of the bastille, it was the storming of our democracy. they were trying to take down our democracy. god only knows what they have would have done if the metropolitan police would not have shown up in time to get them out of there. what would they have done to public officials, what would they have gone to the police? this is an awesome attack on american democracy. there is this guy, donald trump, who was president at the time, laughing at it. by the way, this should not be a comedy central opportunity for a gag. it was not a gag. it was gas lighting. it was
4:03 am
telling the american people that they did not see what they saw, as in the old movie, it is about telling someone they did not see the gas light in the ceiling, she did not see it, yes, she did! this is about telling us, we did not see what we saw. they are lying to us again. trump light on election night when he did not concede the election. all of our presidents have accepted the defeat. hillary clinton accepted her defeat, i'm sorry, you're wrong about that. she accepted the count, the count is what matters. this is going to be a democracy or not be a democracy, if trump wins, i'm not sure, because he says, the vote does not count. what kind of a country? are we a democracy and proud of it, or not? i don't understand people voting for trump in the light of january 6th. i do not understand letting him left at our democracy to try to bring it down. >> yes, jasmine, millions of americans will be voting for
4:04 am
trump. from the harris side, do you think that talking about january 6th, do you think playing these images, talking about the 2020 election, helps persuade some perhaps moderate republicans who might not like trump's character, but our thinking which way to vote in this campaign, or is that not something you are hearing voters are particularly focused on? >> i think that voters are not putting january 6th as their biggest concern when they answer all of these polls. certainly, when i talked to campaigns and all across the country, i was recently in arizona for a few days, what they talk about consistently is economy and inflation. of course, the harris campaign is trying to broaden out that democratic base. yes, the january 6th argument is popular with the democratic base, but it is also appealing to those nikki haley voters are spread out across the country
4:05 am
that voted for haley, even though it was very clear in some of the states by the time the primaries happened to me that she would no longer be in the race, but as a tribute to donald trump. that is the type of voters, the pool of voters in these influential states, arizona has about 145,000 of them, pennsylvania a lot of them, michigan has a lot of them, wisconsin has a lot of them. those are influential voters the harris campaign is trying to target to say, hey, you may not have a voted democrat before, but these are reasons you cannot vote for donald trump, at least try to make sure they are not getting to the polls to vote for trump. speaking as someone, as i have, i have watched the harris campaign day in and day out to me they are shifting the argument from the freedom argument, to the democracy argument, calling trump unstable , saying, he is a threat to democracy. i think they will hit that narrative harder as we get closer to november 5th. >> there does seem to be a shift from joint to fear. let's talk about the alex smith dinner. it is held every year here in
4:06 am
new york. it is held every four years, they usually draw presidential candidates, meant for presidential candidates, a light right of self deprecating humor. last night, trump went. there was nothing self-deprecating about it. he was nasty in his comments, and frankly, not very funny. the vice president opted not to hurt people told me in the days ahead of time, they did not want to see her on stage, on a podium, sharing laughs with the one she has deemed a threat to democracy, but she did end up sending a video anyway. let's get your take on that dynamic, and frankly, should she have gone in terms of trying to make a play for the catholic vote? >> it is a largely republican audience. it is catholic, but a largely business audience. mike bloomberg was there, you did not see a smile on his face or chuck schumer's face all night. the people yukking it up were probably mostly republicans.
4:07 am
that is what it mostly is. it is a fun dinner. i have been at that dais any times. it is fun, people like mitt romney are wonderful at those events, jack kennedy was great at those events. it is a chance to show your bigness, how you can really be a pretty good person. i remember how obama, rather meet romney talked about obama and what a great family he had. it is an opportunity to show good humor, positive things about your country. it could be a good night. i don't know whether she should have gone or not. it would have taken a lot of heat to go there and let the republicans act like it was normal having donald trump, who is trying to stop the last election, trying to stop this one from meaning anything. i want to go back to one thing, john, that is this. if you don't dig elections matter, if you don't think democracy matters, why are you voting? what is your boat about? why are you voting personally? it is the american system, it
4:08 am
is our system, stop laughing about it. stop the comedy central nonsense. stop yukking about it, it is not funny! those people that killed those cops, i was one of those cops. i worked a couple of feet from the lobby door, the speakers lobbies. they try to break their way in there and tried to destroy democracy. what is to be forgotten about this? don't forget it, remember it. this is a big day in american history, the attack on our democracy. if your vote matters to you, it should matter to everybody. you are watching "morning joe: weekend." we will be right back. k. alrighty! who's ready for my famous charred duck? like you know to check the mascot first before bringing food to a tailgate. let's torch this baby! with what he has said. there are efforts to sidestep dance around things he is saying that are clear fascism. let's start by this. i mentioned, donald trump being on "fox and friends." here is again, his connection with fox news, which has debate $787 million for lying, helping him out. here is what he said about the jokes i guess they gave him. take a listen. >> your material was real funny, who wrote it? who helped you with it? >> i had a couple of people from fox, actually i should not say that. they wrote some jokes. for the most part, i didn't like any of them. >> in his little safe space there at fox, he is surrounded by his friends, pretty much is allowed to do whatever he wants, even if it is to defame somebody. maybe malign somebody. maybe put somebody in danger,

in which, i want to talk about not just donald trump's threats , but the media entities like fox news that bend to his will. that fox news interview with kamala harris, it's revealed so much. and now, there is more. that interview, that incredible moment in that interview has revealed in the follow-up-- so, i want to spell it out for you, because this is exactly what they do. kamala harris showed righteous anger after bret baier lied to his viewers by showing a clip that he had donald trump's most dangerous comments on the campaign trail. i am calling it a lie now, because this was not a live interview and he was not caught off guard. there is no excuse. 24 hours after fox news ran on a loop, harris's reaction to
4:15 am
that misleading clip that millions of americans were misled by, their choice was not to apologize to the viewers right away, but instead, to show her reaction, just for the o, that is called voiceover, not her voice, not what she is saying, not what happened there, but this. and they show it out of context, and continue over this video to berate, mischaracterize and diminish her as an angry black woman. the american people were misled about one of the most important issues of this campaign, that there is a former president who wants to be president again, threatening to use the military and national guard against his political opponents. these acts that he is talking about are
4:16 am
not only unconstitutional, this is called fascism. bret baier chose to cover it up, and then, did not clean it up for 24 hours . as i said earlier in tv news, hosts and producers know immediately when a clip is wrong. matt harris knew the clip was wrong. this was alive to tape. they even had time to clean it up when the interview aired, which actually makes it worse. they all knew. they had time to correct this, but they wanted her righteous anger in context, which was absolutely the normal reaction to 8.2 million americans being misled. what did brett do, instead of correct this? he hated the ball.
4:17 am
he hit the truth. he did what donald trump would have wanted him to do. call that malice of forethought. anybody on that show, they knew what they were doing. they let it go for 24 hours, and did a very weak, light, quick apology, and never really addressed it. they knew what they were doing. and i am just really glad that 8.2 million americans had a chance to get just a glimmer into how far fox news would go to mislead the american people, their viewers, for the benefit of a man who calls people who don't agree with them, the enemy from within. it is what they do. i call that unfair and off- balance, but may decide. and i hope the fox viewers who were watching that get a chance
4:18 am
to really think about what they are really seeing, because she pulled the mask off in that one moment. caddy k, i don't know if there is anymore i can say about the importance of disinformation, misinformation, or misleading information when it comes to banding to somebody with extreme passage fascist tendencies, have overstated anything? >> no, you are quite right. we all know, we work in television a lot, we know it is not the right clip. you can clip that immediately. i think kamala harris, throughout the interview, kamala harris, who is always walking, because of the fact that she is the woman, or the because cause of the fact that she is a woman of color, is always walking a fine line. she says, if she is not sounding tough, she is not strong enough.
4:19 am
if she is too strong, then she is angry. it is the most phenomenal juggling act that any woman and any woman of color, in particular, running for particular office has to do. i listened to that interview several times and i thought she did a good job of pushing back. i think the moments where he keeps talking over her at the beginning did not do actually him any favors. they sound like, how many times have you talked over me, most days. i think most women listening to that will have a lot of empathy for what kamala harris is going through, but she also sounded tough and corrected the record. i can understand. >> a dangerous record to correct . >> yeah, and she did it! and she did it in real time, which is never that easy to do. she was fast and she was tough. coming up, veteran journalist bob woodward joins us with some of the biggest revelations from his new book, war.
