within. >> i think we have more of a enemy from within that we do outside. you have a smart president, they talk about president, china, and everything else. we have a bigger problem for from within. i noticed today, he said, the enemy from within. adam schiff, these are bad people. these are sick people and bad people. >> just days before those comments, trump suggested the military could be called in to handle election day unrest from quote, radical, left lunatics. both he and j.d. vance have stepped up their embrace of january 6th the 2020 election day then i'll from the campaign trail. pay attention to this, none of this is normal. none of it. there is no enemy within. stop it. joining us now, msnbc political analyst, john daniels, also co- authored for "political playbook " and white house correspondent,
6:03 am
come prepared. statement looking good this morning. >> in the all white short said. >> did you see that kmart got that sort of gucci slide look, that sort of thing going. >> you know, donald trump, i feel people are like, he could not possibly be saying these things, but michael just played more of what he said. here is what he said about january 6th, peaceful transfer of power, love, in chicago on tuesday. let's hear that. >> i do believe, i do believe, this is really-- >> are you encouraging a peaceful transfer of power? segment you had a peaceful transfer of power. sigma come on, president trump, you had a peaceful transfer of power better than venezuela. >> people are angry. i tell you what, they never show that. the primary scene in washington was
6:04 am
hundreds of thousands, the largest group of people i have ever spoken to before, and it was love and peace. and some people went to the capitol, and a lot of strange things happened there. a lot of strange things. >> you know, this is, i think, very important. because you hear-- i've heard it from white house reporters, i have heard it from other folks in the media apparatus. voters know who donald trump is . yes, they are familiar with who he is, but did they hear what he said? >> one of the really fascinating, and scared for a lot of people, the language and the warnings are getting darker. the xenophobic and racist remarks are getting worse. they are no longer dog whistles. he is making things very clear. that is not a good subjective opinion of mine. we looked at
6:05 am
20 rallies of his and found that all of these things are absolutely true. he is sharing these conspiracy theories that black and brown people are predisposed, genetically, right, which is languages used by fascists, folks that have done these things before, predisposed to violence, migrants, and other groups. the conspiracy theories and the rumors, the spreading of that, even he at 2020, 2016, he did not share those things. they bounced around twitter and facebook, but they would not come out of his mouth, and that has changed this time period. >> i thought what was very interesting this week, when he went to univision and telemundo and had the conversation with the hispanic community and romero gonzalez . >> new jersey cuban . [ laughter ] come on, jersey! new jersey cuban corner. >> let's take a listen to this
6:06 am
exchange on january 6th. i thought it was very interesting. >> what happened during january 6th, and the fact that you waited so long to take action while your supporters were attacking the capitol, people so close to you and your administration no longer want to support you, so why would i want to support you? your own vice president does not want to support you now? >> i said peacefully, patriotically, nothing done wrong at all and nothing done wrong. action was taken, strong action was taken. ashley babbitt was killed, nobody was killed. there were no guns down there, we did not have guns come of the others had guns. >> it really kind of goes to what symone said, did you hear what he said? when you heard what he said, you saw the reaction in the room. you saw the head, what the heck , no, what?
6:07 am
ashley babbitt was killed, nobody was killed. the woman was like, no, i just know you did not say that. i just think there is something in this critical two weeks about moments like that that need to get plate over, and over, and over again to understand to symone's point, did you hear what he said? do not give me how you felt four years ago when people were dying from covid around you and you thought everything was just fine. did you see hear what he said last week? did you hear what he said to this community and that community? >> there has always been a question in the medial world, like don't take it literally, don't take him seriously, just don't take them literally. what we have seen over time is that, as his remarks and rhetoric have gotten darker, at some point, you have to believe something. you have to believe, it is not just them saying things to get elected, that they believe it. if you talk to the people around him, they believe that he believes it. when he says, he will go after his political
6:08 am
opponents, they believe it when he says, he is going to go to the civil service and federal government. they believe it. if the people around him believe it, the rest of the country should too. if the rest of the country decide, i'm fine with it, they should realize, he is not just talking and joking. in 2016, even 2020, donald trump looked like he was having fun while running for office. that is not what you see right now. this is a much angrier donald trump than what we have ever seen. what that tells you is that something has changed and shifted in him and what he thinks about this country. people often forget, these federal investigations can be closed down by a president of the united states who can go to the just the department and say, it's over, jack smith has got to. that is one of the reasons he is running for president. and he is probably, if elected going to do this. that is another reason why he is probably feeling so angry. >> if the stakes are so
6:09 am
personal and high, one would think that a candidate would be energized by that, but instead, what we are seeing is a candidate, by his own campaign's admission, is exhausted. i think it is interesting that led several broadcast last night it is now breaking through reporting from "politico." viewers, i'm not sure understand that this donald trump is four years older. >> and joe biden, they are close in age. one of the things he used to talk about that he seemed like he had a lot of vitality. he was doing his little dance to ymca, he looked like he had a lot of energy. he was talking to the shade room, the campaign was talking to the shade room to do a sit down, vice president hairs did one, and the trump advisor told the folks at the shade room, he was exhausted and was canceling some of his interviews. and we reported that in "political playbook" yesterday. that reporting is true. you also look at this week of him
6:10 am
canceling other things. last week for 60 minutes, cnbc, mbc, and he will not do an townhall. even on stage this week, he started what was supposed to be a q&a townhall with the south dakota governor. he just turned on music for a while and said, wants to hear questions? a lot of people do two weeks out from the election. there is a question vultures have, not us, but voters have about what is happening there . the polling shows, there has been a shift in the way we think about how much vitality. >> can i just say, we often talk about how this race is so asymmetrical. i think one of the ways we are seeing that asymmetry, is that when she is put in front of audiences, people like her. the more they learn about her, the more they like her. when he goes in front of
6:11 am
audiences, you have an individual like me he is not all with it. the problem is, two weeks out, you cannot bring that reality to scale. she will not be able to be in front of every american voter, nor is he. once again, they are not playing on the same field. >> the people that like him, when they see him, this is great. the people that already liked him, who were at that jam session, they were like, it was not weird. they told reporters, that is not weird. the folks that need to come out, usually who presidential candidates want, independents, and more moderates to come out and vote for you, they are turned off by a lot of this stuff. it may work on his base, it may not. >> we don't know. people are voting right now in early voting and election day is the end of voting, not the beginning. there were republicans in the georgia rally, frankly, that came to trump's georgia rally that had on i voted today stickers. there were republicans as well that voted here to trenton
6:12 am
alicia's point, i think it is put in for that reason that the vice president is literally going all of these places, trying to talk to all of these different voters. she can't reach every altar or get in front of everyone, according to google, the search for kamala harris, insert name of policies, went up after the interview. one could argue that it worked. even in that interview exchange with bret baier, he's trying to tell you, you have a lot of things to say about trump. let's just play it. you say he is unstable, he is! let's take a listen. >> you called donald trump, he is misguided. >> he is unstable. he is unstable. >> he's not well, you said, he is mentally unstable. let me ask you this, you told the interviewers that joe biden was on his game, ran around circles on his staff, when did you first notice that president biden's mental faculties appeared diminished?
6:13 am
>> joe biden, i have watched from the oval office to the situation room, and he has the judgment, and the experiment, the experience to do exactly what he has done in making very important decisions on behalf of the american people. brett, joe biden is not on the ballot. donald trump is. >> like none of this was working. i'd just like to know why donald trump cannot make it to his interviews? joe biden went to germany and back just yesterday. >> joe biden is not running for president. what is the question, brett? why are you asking about that? it is not a relevant point. that to me was, i've got to do this for donald trump question for me. donald trump is seemingly the only person at this point in the campaign who cares that joe biden is not on the stage, right? she handled that moment. a lot of people walked away from that, i think, certainly
6:14 am
folks in the trump campaign and on the right were like me she got owned by brett. that is not how the rest of the world saw that. i think they gave her a lot of street credit for sitting down in a hostile environment, politically, and handling it. donald trump, i extend the invitation again. come to msnbc, come to nbc news. maybe, we will make it real comfortable for you. we will give you your favorite drink, some cookies, a towel, whatever. he is not showing up. >> the interesting thing when i was talking with republicans and democrats, but republicans are like, that went a lot better than we thought too, which tells you something, one to me they gave her credit for going, but these are also the same people who for years have told me vice president harris can't string a sentence together. [ laughter ] so, when they
6:15 am
watched what happened, when they watch her go toe to toe, i think the playbook came out, kamala harris goes bear hunting. very creepy over there. the idea that she went there and she was able to defend, also redirect in a way that only you can do if you have been practicing, and trying to be politically astute. the answer about joe biden is not on the ballot, that is nothing republicans said over and over, one that tells republicans, she's trying to distance herself from joe biden. she has to go to the oval office every day, but reminding people, she is not either of those guys. that is important, because she is still introducing herself this late in the game to a lot of american voters. >> eugene daniels, we appreciate you, very good to see you. up next, folks, we will discuss the harris campaign's response to the dark rhetoric we just referenced. you are talking, and watching,
6:19 am
6:20 am
last night about january 6th? he called it a quote, a day of love. it points out something here that everyone knows, the american people are exhausted with his gas lighting. it is clear, donald trump is increasingly unstable, and unhinged, and will stop at nothing to claim unchecked power for himself. >> see, i think that is really, really important to do. they also must be seeing, in their own internal data, but also conversations on the campaign trail, that people need to hear what he is saying. and she is doing the whole, play the clip thing. it is probably why president obama is saying what he said, alicia. >> there is sound i wanted to play the whole show. >> y'all need to buckle up. go get something to drink and
6:21 am
listen. >> i feel like even for barack obama i have over teased it. here is barack obama. >> i understand why people are looking to shake things up. i get why sometimes folks are frustrated with politics. i'm sometimes frustrated with politics. so, i get it. what i cannot understand is why anyone would think that donald trump will shake things up in a way that is for putting. that, i don't understand. >> there is discontent in the electorate, that is undeniable. and i would argue that that has been a part of donald trump's intent this entire time, to make people feel like, well, no matter who is in power, it is a mess. you get these people power, they get nothing done. the only ones who benefit are
6:22 am
the faux populace, the ones trying to make the argument that a government can be nothing for good. now, you have some degree, that has found itself fatigued from years of donald trump and trumpism. that is why i thought that message from president obama was important to say, i get that that may be where you are, but you now have a binary choice where we can go backwards to what we have already had with donald trump, or we can go forward and try a new way with kamala harris. >> yes. and the problem is that 47% of the people want to go backward. the challenge for the harris campaign is to recognize that barack obama, and all the surrogates out there are sort of funneling that message down to the point that you just made, that this is binary choice . and you don't get to play the -- even though yes in the game, you can write somebody's name
6:23 am
or you don't have to play, that is a choice that you make, and it has an impact. you need to understand the consequences of what your actions are doing. the reality is, for donald trump, to your point, his ceiling is 47%. the boy is-- he's never hit-- i have seen these fake polls, fake polls that donald trump at 52%. donald trump has not had 53% of anything in his life, and anything he has ever touched. it is a lie. the ceiling is 47%. in four years, 47%. this is november 2022, he announced, 47% . he needs to take her floor, which is 48%, and bring her down . that is what this whole effort is about, which obama is addressing. because, the goal here is to say, it's all bad. it's all bad, and it can't be fixed, but i alone can fix it.
6:24 am
i am donald trump, i alone can fix it. what he is trying to remind us, to your patient waiting to play that clip is, you can't wait anymore. you've got to make the choice now, you are either going to go back to the very thing that was dark and difficult, or you are going to move forward to something that is a little bit better and you will have a little bit more control over. i think that is a good message. >> we will talk about one of the key constituents is bringing this campaign, focusing on young men in the final 17 days. you are watching "the weekend." weekend."
6:28 am
swiffer duster traps 4x more dust, for a clean even mom approves of. that reach! making hard to reach... so easy. swiffer. wow. the mother of all cleans. love it or your money back! the harris campaign is making an aggressive, last- minute effort to win over younger, male voters, investing in a series of absolute male- dominated sports and videogame sites like draftkings and yahoo sports.
6:29 am
joining us now, the cofounder of the young men initiative, and president of woodberry strategies, terrance woodbury. good morning to you both. >> lay it on the table for us, aaron, you first, and then terrance, give us some data. what the hell is going on here, how real is it, how fake, give me the tea. >> joe biden won young men with 54% of the vote in 2020. that was 70% of the votes. clearly, donald trump is appealing to young men come he wants to flip them. we can't let that happen. our research at youngman research initiative shows that young men are overwhelmingly progressive on a range of policy issues just like young women. that includes things like abortion rights. that is true across race and class. second, this is not just a u.s. phenomenon. this is happening across the globe and kamala harris is
6:30 am
doing substantially better with young man that joe biden was doing when he dropped out. democrats do have a messaging problem. only 33% of young men now identify as democrats, down from over 40% in 2020. we only have three weeks left, less than three weeks left in this election. republicans are outspending democrats four to one when it comes to targeting young men with online ads, tend to one in key states like pennsylvania. it is great that kim harris is talking about going on joe rogan, great that tim walz is going on sports shows, they are targeting online ads to fantasy football viewers. we need to persuade young men and turned them out. this is a persuadable group, but we can only persuade them if we get in front of them. >> terrance? >> look, young men are emerging as a new swing voter. previous elections have focused on suburban women as swing voters, soccer moms as swing voters. what we are seeing is yog
