5:03 pm
exhaustion. have you noticed he tends to go off script and ramble and generally for the life of him cannot finish a thought. >> you would be worried if your grandpa was acting like his. >> trump's exhaustion can be seen in his interview schedule or lack thereof. he seems to keep canceling interviews and events. in the past week he canceled interviews on 60 minutes, cnbc, nbc news, and a scheduled nra event. the nra. instead he's isolated in his right wing media bubble taking softball interviews that includes the fox town hall that was meant to feature trump speaking with women voters. they are now reporting that the room was filled with republican supporters. considering the rambling and

incoherent things he said, it's easy to understand why he's staying inside the safe bubble. >> i was so amazed that harvey weinstein. lincoln was a great president, but i always said, why wasn't that settled? i love cows, but if we go with kamala, you won't have any cows. this one here. ,. >> his cognitive decline on further display friday in detroit. all those interviews we mentioned that he had canceled, listen to what he told a reporter just yesterday. >> what event of i canceled? she doesn't go to any events. >> she does not go to any events. we saw her in michigan and tonight she's in atlanta with

usher not to mention she's continued her media blitz since going into unfriendly territory with brett baier. and she's considering going on joe rogan's podcast, who's been a harsh critic of hers. to be blunt, donald trump has lost the plot and is the shadow of the candidate he was four years ago. with 17 days until the election, the man who prided himself as full of energy is now clearly hiding in his basement. we have a panel. hayes brown is with us and tim o'brien. and the author of trump nation. so we will start with everyone around the table. has this guy lost the plot? is he bonkers right now? >> i think i might disappoint you. i think on the surface, yes.
5:06 pm
we are seeing someone who's unhinged and tired and hiding. but i think that's the danger of donald trump. the biggest weapon that he has is not his appearance but it's what we don't see. that's the danger of the ideology. perhaps there entering his stage where they take a step back, across the arms, and see the trump machine doing what it does really well through that fear. they've been doing this since 2016. they know the majority of republicans don't believe that joe biden is president and they know they have fundamentally shifted this country to the right on immigration and they have scared people to the point that they believe that the machine does what it does. we don't need donald trump to do that. it is the ideology doing the work. sorry. >> i think that's the kind of smart intellectual answer.
5:07 pm
and i think you are right about the points that you raise. he has this machine behind him that he has created, and in that bubble in which that machine is operating, has he not become irrelevant and has he become -- because of the fatigue and exhaustion? >> in a way. and it's bad for him considering the fact that she's the one when lara trump took over the rnc was scrapped the ground game. i'm the best person out there to get supporters out to the polls and get them ready to go. he's canceling events and rambling on the stump. he's people in the audience there to support him. i have adhd, so it's easy to jump from topic to topic. i've been watching him a long time and i know the cast of characters. even then, a lot of times i can get lost. what is less important than him going off on tangents is how often he loops back to his

original point. that is something we see less and less of. >> joking aside, at the end of the day, in order for his threat to be as serious as it should be , he needs to win, and he cannot win if he looks like a buffoon or a babbling idiot. >> one of the unfortunate things is the danger in all of this is that the idiocy and the irrationality are okay with -- you know, at least half of the republican base more less. and it might just turn on this block of moderate and independent voters who have had enough with that. clearly democrats have an

enough republicans are willing to absorb it, so it will come down on november 5th's people deciding whether or not they want someone who is utterly unhinged with his finger on the nuclear button. i think what is important is that to a certain extent he's always been this way. he's ignorant. he's a racist. he's irrational, a flamethrower. he goes after people emotionally and not intellectually. and he's been that way his whole life. what we have seen since 2020 is he is degrading. his speeches slurring. 's mind is slower and he's tired at the end of the day and lose this the plot and loses the narrative and his train of thought and he's dangerous. and he's not fit to occupy the oval office.>> you bring up a good time for me to play this sound on tape. >> should google be breaking up?>> i just haven't gotten over something the justice

department did yesterday. were virginia cleaned up the voter rolls and got rid of thousands of bad votes in the justice department sued them that they should be allowed to put those illegal votes back in and let the people vote. so i haven't gotten -- i haven't gotten over that. >> the question was about google. >> the question was about should google be broken up and he went off on a tangent. and its this indication of the mental decline that he's going through, but it seems -- i don't even know if his supporters see those clips. it doesn't enter into their stream of information. >> that is the clip that the harris campaign wants everyone to see and that's where you see the campaign transforming the message. it used to be that casting him as a threat because of his
5:11 pm
authoritarian tendencies and the message was more abstract and less palpable and now it's very clear. this man cannot even answer a question, and that's something that americans can relate to. it's a version of him that is a crazier, older version and people can relate to that. and that's a clip they are relying on. but even in those moments he is still revealing the authoritarian tendencies when he talks about the enemy within and said these immigrants are poisoning our blood and what should happen with generals. these are things that break through to his base. >> at bat is a bonkers political strategy. and anytime there's the word strategy -- but he doesn't need to do anything more for his base. they are with him regardless of what he will do. he needs, i think, to convince
5:12 pm
people that he's a rational actor and he's not. and every time he has an opportunity to do it, whether he's debating kamala harris or talking to someone on the stage in chicago where the script should be about being rational and in command of the fact, he does not do it, in part because he's not capable but also because he does not want to and it drives his campaign managers bonkers. and this is what you will see until november 5th. he's baked into saying i'm going to be in authoritarian and i'm going to be about abusing the law and about undermining american institution sensibility and i'm to take that to november 5th and that is what will be tested. >> let me get your thoughts about the approach of kamala harris. she's going on fox and handling herself well and going on to other types of podcasts. doing completely different strategy and it makes me wonder
5:13 pm
does she need to do that when he is saying forget it, i'm going to do it by my playbook. why not just take it do the same? >> it's very tempting, but what she's trying to do is trying to find enough slices of the electorate to eke out a win in enough states to get to the electoral votes that she needs to get across the line and that's it. her going on fox news is the opposite of that because it shows her in command of the facts and she's willing to step up and say, i'm here to answer your questions. people make fun of her for having word salad, but you know what she's talking about. she's talking about the subject matter at hand. so when you have that comparison and people who are moderate republicans who are business owners and looking at the comparison between the two, trump cannot answer a simple question about antitrust where he stands versus kamala harris,
5:14 pm
whose actively trying to court members. she's looking for new votes. donald trump is counting on the votes he already has and trying to drum up support among people who are not likely to vote. >> and hoping people sit out to one vote for kamala harris and trying to suppress the vote by slinging mud. we will talk about that in the different ads they are running in different places coming up next. we will squeeze in a quick break. there are groups of voters we need their heads checked. the conversation is next. is net biktarvy is a complete, one-pill, once-a-day treatment used for h-i-v in many people whether you're 18 or 80. with one small pill, biktarvy fights h-i-v to help you get to undetectable—and stay there whether you're just starting or replacing your current treatment. research shows that taking h-i-v treatment as prescribed and getting to and staying undetectable prevents transmitting h-i-v through sex. serious side effects can occur, including kidney problems and kidney failure.

is that this campaign season the trump campaign understood the have to court lack and latino voters at least a little bit if they want to win. at the same time they are making it clear that black and brown folks don't fit into their version of america. they never have and never will. since the 1970s his corporation was discriminating against black renters. in the 1980s he was calling for the death penalty the central park five. he pushes the birth certificate in the 2000 and here he is again questioning the vice president intelligence. the idea that trump believes he has to genuinely earn the vote of black and brown voters, it's not happening. he feels he deserves it and it is all part of the same playbook. black and brown voters shield him from being cast as a racist and that's the point.

quarters out of the pockets of working-class people. he passed nothing in his first term that benefited working- class americans. everything he did was about benefiting members of his elite class. i think harris has to remind people that the economy has grown historically greater under democratic presidents that it has under republican presidents and she has an agenda targeting working americans and talk about opportunity. she has three weeks -- two weeks -- i don't know that at this point on policy issues it's going to make a difference. but on trust and rationality and capacity to fill that office she has to stay on that track because she beats them hands down. >> what is your take explaining the rationale about why there is an appeal among latino --

young latino and black voters for an authoritarian racist xenophobe, homophobe. >> from where i'm sitting, it's about in groups and out groups. if you are a younger black or latino voter and you consider trump, you are on the outs with people in your life. and trump is telling you those people are wrong and they need their heads examined. you are here and you are right and you are with me and that's what's important. doing so, it's not based solely on race. it's not something that's unique to racial dynamics. it's looking at people who are feeling on the outs. the way that trump mentioned that the democrats have been screwing you talking to minorities. that's a feeling that's prominent within minority groups for decades that they take us for granted. they make promises and don't
