night, you can get to the nightcap again on saturdays. 11:00 p.m. eastern here on msnbc. remember, nbc films presents "my generation." the documentary that looks at how cultural and political events shaped four generations. this week, it is all about manella meals. samantha will know all about that. i think "nobody wants this" is one of the greatest shows i have ever seen. i've watched it twice. i might watch it a third time. now you can see her narrating this documentary. you can see the new episode tomorrow at 9:00 eastern right here. from all of our colleagues and their networks at nbc news, thank you for staying up late with me. i will see you at the end of monday. battle in the battleground states.
9:01 pm
donald trump is set to hold a campaign event in pennsylvania right now as vice president, harris prepares to rally supporters this hour in georgia. after once again sounding the alarm on trumps mental stability. >> he is becoming increasingly unstable and unhinged. i think the american people are seeing it, witnessing it in real-time. >> the view from the voters. more than 12 million people have already cast their ballots. today early voting got underway in the key state of nevada. congressman robert garcia joins me live to talk about what he is hearing from voters on the ground, including their reactions to trump's is our appearance at a town hall with latino voters. and, the show me state senate showdown. i will ask lucas about the big endorsement he picked up with senator josh hawley. a man who was scathingly dubbed the country's worst sitting senator.
9:02 pm
i am jonathan capehart. this is the saturday show. 17 days to go until election day. in this hour, vice president, harris and donald trump are scheduled for dual campaign rallies into battleground states. the vice president will take the stage soon in atlanta georgia, where more than 1 billion early votes have already been cast. a record for early ballots cast in the peach state. to put that in perspective, the total early vote in georgia in 2020 was a little more than 4 million. the campaign is also deploying some superstar surrogates. singer-songwriter usher is expected to be alongside the vice president tonight. earlier today, harris was joined by lizzo at an event in detroit for the first day of early voting there. the vice president's closing

message was clear. >> we know what is at stake and we know the power of the people. this is about the power of the people. this is about knowing each one of us, as an individual, and as a collective, as a community, as a coalition. we have the power to make the decisions about the direction of our country. we are going to fight for this country we love. we are in this to win it. >> asked for her opponent, donald trump, he is set to take the stage in pennsylvania any moment. joining me now from that rally in the trump pennsylvania is nbc news correspondent dosha burns. thank you for being here. what can we expect to hear from donald trump tonight? >> reporter: well, jonathan, the campaign wants the closing
9:04 pm
message to be all about immigration and the economy. those are two things that the campaign wants the former president to focus on. of course, we have seen him time and time again go off script and off message from that, but pennsylvania in particular, the economy as it pertains to energy. this is a state that relies heavily on its oil and gas industry. that is something that the former president knows and this is a message he has tried to deliver here time and time again. that is part of what we expect to hear from him tonight. look. pennsylvania, this is the state that both trump and vice president, harris have visited more times than any other state since july. this could really be the leachman in the entire thing. you see it this weekend. crisscrossing the state, he is outside of pittsburgh today. he is going to be in the philly area tomorrow, then in lancaster. we just learned moments ago that he will be headed to the steelers game tomorrow night. and bringing some star power with antonio brown and bell
9:05 pm
with him in the box tomorrow. this is the stage that both campaigns are laser focused on and for good reason. trump won the state in 2016, lost it very narrowly in 2020, and desperately wants to win this time around. jonathan. >> dasha , as you were speaking, donald trump came off the plane. he is down and heading across the tarmac. we are looking at those live pictures now. he is heading in your direction. dasha burns , thank you very much for that live report. as the candidates crisscross the states in the campaign's final weeks, more than 12 million ballots have already been cast in dozens of states across the country. the majority of them by democrats. that includes, in the crucial battleground state of nevada, where early voting began today. later tonight, former president barack obama will rally in las vegas to encourage voters to cast their vote for the harris-
9:06 pm
walls ticket. joining me now is california congressman robert garcia, national co-chair of the harris- walls. it seems like every time i talk to you you are in nevada. you have been there so much. what are you hearing from folks on the ground? >> this is a really exciting day for the nevada team. this is the first day of early voting in this critical state that is a must win for our campaign. vice president harris, governor walz, the whole team is fired up. we are seeing such energy on the ground. not just today but over the last few weeks. all focused on making sure that kamala harris wins the state. what is really critical about us here, it is important to turn out latino votes. in taco shops, restaurants, their neighborhoods, all sorts of places. talking to the latino community
9:07 pm
in english, in spanish, turning out the vote. that is why i am here and so many of us are here this weekend to make sure this early vote is coming in for kamala harris. what we are seeing at these early voting sites, i am excited about what is going to happen on election day. we are going to win the battle. >> let's talk more about the latino voters. particularly the town hall with latino voters that donald trump did. i just want to play, here is, this was in response to a question from a man who said to donald trump that he wanted donald trump to earn his vote because he was disturbed by a lot of things, including what happened on january 6th. watch this and we will talk about it on the other side. >> nothing done wrong at all. nothing done wrong. action was taken. strong action. nobody was killed. there were no guns down there.
9:08 pm
we didn't have guns. the others had guns. when i say these are people that walk down, this was a tiny percentage of the overall which nobody sees, nobody shows, but that was a day of love. >> congressman, later reporting shows that that gentleman who asked the question said that donald trump did not earn his vote. what has been the reaction, if any, that you have heard to that univision town hall that donald trump put on? >> everyone i talked to thought it was completely bizarre. a lot of folks saw that. a lot of folks watch univision. his answers were completely unacceptable to the community. and to somehow defend what happened on january 6th, and certainly the person that asked the question, we offered his action, of course. like he mentioned afterwards, there is no connection with the latino community and donald trump.
9:09 pm
this is the same person that calls our community criminals, that we are somehow poisoning the blood of this country. he is no friend of us. mass deportations, horrific policies against migrants and our community. that is going to take us all backwards. we are talking to voters about the future. kamala harris knows this community. she has great plans for homeownership, for small businesses. i was with about 25 undecided latinos last night who were construction workers. i went to go speak to them because they weren't sure where they were going. we left that gathering with all of them fired up to vote for kamala harris because they learned her plans, they understood what she is doing, and that is what we do with every single voter. we are talking to them one-on- one and making sure they cast their ballots for kamala harris. >> is there one particular issue that gets those voters fired up or is it a basket of issues that gets them fired up? what are the issues that voters are saying are important to
9:10 pm
them that is then driving them to say that they are going to cast a ballot, cast a vote, for the vice president? >> i mean, i think all voters, and especially latino voters in places like nevada, arizona, are really talking about ensuring the working class people have access to good jobs. whether they are in construction, the trades, there is work for them to do, that they will be respected, that they have the right to join and be a part of their union. and they understand that donald trump is a danger to all of that. the project 2025 is a danger to all of that. we are hearing a lot about that work. the other piece your hearing a lot about his folks are saying, look. my mom is still undocumented. my sister is still trying to get access to have her pathway to citizenship one day. so they understand that kamala harris has a fair approach. not just to securing the border and making sure we have a safe
9:11 pm
border, but to making sure that people here have the dignity and earning citizenship and earning the program. kamala harris understands both of those things and those are the two things i am hearing the most from voters here on the ground, particularly the latino community here in nevada. >> one of the things, one of the big things in project 2025 is mass deportation. it is something that donald trump regularly talks about from his campaign rallies. it is something that his supporters say that they support and their is pulling out there that shows that actually there are a lot of people who actually don't think that there is a problem with that. how concerned are the voters you are talking to of now the promise of mass-deportations on day one if donald trump wins in november? >> i think, first of all, there is a lot of misinformation out in the media. i think it is really shameful to see so many buying into that.
9:12 pm
but when you talk to average folks, working-class folks, the latino community, they are completely against that. they understand that donald trump and the extreme maga right wants to hurt our community, wants to deport the community, wants to separate families. that is resonating with folks here in nevada. it is resonating with folks in the southwest. we are going to continue to push that message. as a californian, kamala harris is from my home state. she understands the latino community. she understands the west. i have been very hardened, being out here this weekend and seeing this early vote, how fired up people are. quite honestly, there is not much of a donald trump operation out here. this campaign has 14 offices. 14 offices across the state. i think the trump campaign might have two. there are thousands and thousands of volunteers. so there is a real operation here is turning out this vote.
9:13 pm
an early vote is how we win here in pennsylvania, in georgia, in north carolina. if you have a ballot, go vote. let's get them in. >> real fast, when you just said about the trump operation such as it is. are you seeing any signs of folks doorknocking, lawn signs, anything like that on behalf of donald trump in nevada since you have been out there? >> yeah. look, you do see, there are some signs, there are some folks obviously supporting donald trump, no question. from a grassroots perspective, from a volunteer perspective, and certainly from offices, there is no comparison in the two operations. the democrats and certainly the harris campaign have a real nevada operation. this is being multiplied across the country. of course, what donald trump has, he has his billionaire friends, he has the

conservative media that at this point is essentially lying and giving mistruths to the community, and a lot of disinformation. so we are focused on the truth and mobilizing folks. they are trying to use lies and quite frankly fear interning out their operations. so that is why i am so hopeful about november. i really believe this country does want to move forward and like the vice president always says, we are not going back. >> california congressman robert garcia, coming to us from the ground in nevada. thank you very, very much. as we mentioned, we are still waiting for vice president kamala harris, who is set to speak at a rally in atlanta, georgia. i have a panel with me after the break to discuss her campaign and the election. just 17 days away. plus, the fallout in the middle east following the death of the leader of hamas. don't go anywhere. we have got a jampacked our of the saturday show on nbc.

and you are looking at live pictures from atlanta, georgia, where right there at the podium is a sure. and we are, right now, waiting for vice president harris to speak at the "get out the vote" rally any minute. this isn't the only place where there is action. democrats are hosting rallies featuring celebrities and public figures all throughout the weekend and other key states. tonight, former president barack obama is in nevada. for his part, you are looking at live pictures of -- are we going to show this? live pictures of donald trump's rally. at an airport in unity township, pennsylvania. this might be all the energy the 78-year-old former president can muster. politico reports that trump has been declining interviews in recent days because as an adviser told one news outlet, trump was, quote, exhausted, and refusing some interviews, but that could change,
9:20 pm
according to two people familiar with the conversations. earlier today in detroit, in response to a reporter's question, vice president harris talked about why she is now responding more directly to donald trump. >> you have been doing some more rapid response, i would describe it. responding to him in near real time in recent days. it feels like something slightly different from the way you are handling it before and i am wondering why that shift. >> he is becoming increasingly unstable and unhinged. and it requires that response. >> joining me now, democratic strategist and msnbc analyst, michael jr. also a professor of practice at the school of professional studies at columbia university. the one on the right. and jennifer rubin, opinion writer for the washington post and author of "resistance: how women save democracy from donald trump." thank you for being here. jen, i'm going to start with
9:21 pm
you. you had a column this week about the vice president and you say, the final and most effective critique against the oldest presidential nominee of a major party is being delivered by vice president harris. talk about that. >> she is actually running clips of him at her rallies, something i have never seen a presidential candidate do. that is because the reality of donald trump is very disturbing. unfortunately, he has been sanitized. he has been saying washed, which is now an expression. i do not think the average person truly appreciates how unraveled, how insane, how tired he is, and she is willing to show and take time out of her own rally. she is now making this an issue. i think it is beginning to finally break through in the mainstream media because it is unavoidable. >> what do you think? >> what jennifer just said. i think it is a really amazing
9:22 pm
sort of breakthrough in the campaign strategy to be able to say, number one, donald trump is unhinged. and being able to say that in real time and to do that side- by-side in the rallies with video of him, you know, it is quite remarkable. and i like to also mention the fact that the rapid response that was referred to in the question is in part because of all the money that she has been able to reach. the social media game has always been really strong, but i do want to caution one thing. even though we can talk about donald trump not doing a lot of events and not having many offices as congressman garcia talked about earlier, just always remember, his campaign right now is not about persuasion. he has reached a ceiling. they know that. the campaign is about making sure that kamala harris doesn't come out.
9:23 pm
so all of this is related to and targeted towards a lot of african-american voters, latino voters as well. it is not about persuasion and joining him. simple things can be true. >> i wouldn't put, i wouldn't play something that lizzo had to say at the rally in detroit today. lizzo is from detroit and she didn't take too kindly to the man on the screen on the left dissing her hometown in her own town. watch this. >> i am so proud to be from the city. you know, they say if, wins, then that whole country will be like detroit. okay. proud like detroit. resilient like detroit. we are talking about the same detroit that innovated the auto industry and the music industry. so put some respect on detroit's name. >> now, watch. yesterday, donald trump had a rally in detroit and just watch what
9:24 pm
happened last night. >> it is not love. it is not respect. >> so, jennifer, i showed that because on the weekend, michael steele made an excellent point. detroit could have taken it's revenge on donald trump last night. how is it that his mics, his rallies, mics worked perfectly fine except last night for detroit for 20 minutes. >> you are such a spit --
9:25 pm
suspicious guy, jonathan. i think it is emblematic of the campaign. i think congressman garcia mentioned it as well. their ground game is elon musk. the large rallies. so when it comes to really turning out people, when it comes to door-knocking, that last week or so of persuasion, she has a camping operation. he does not. i think that is worth several points where you finally tally up the votes. >> what you make of that? i hear he has no ground game, but, i mean, is it possible that no ground game could actually equal losing at the ballot box? >> well, the get out the vote operations are crucial to any political campaign. if you don't have the money or the ground game to get your voters out, that is very crucial. that is white i support all the money that kamala harris has
9:26 pm
raised. the fact that trump has reached his ceiling in terms of his support. now he is just trying to keep kamala harris' support from coming out. and all of the fervor, by the way, that we see on the trump side. he is counting on that. he is counting on that religious fervor that we have talked about. doubling down on the election and nihilism, which is a key campaign strategy for him. he is counting on the fact that people are ready to come out and support him. but, you know, the campaigns actually do take an infrastructure of operation to be successful and that is what we have seen with the harris campaign. a very successful infrastructure. that is very adept at rapid response and clearly has developed and is continuing to develop enthusiasm towards election day. >> as you see, on the left part of your screen, at the harris rally, music must be real good
