tonight on "the reid-out". >> it is deeply troubling and incredibly dangerous that donald trump would invoke adolph hitler, the man who is responsible for the deaths of 6 million jews and hundreds of thousands of americans. >> his own people are warning us that trump is a fascist who has praised hitler. so why is this not major front page news. also tonight, trump will hold a rally in new york next week. a state he cannot win. in new york city, a city that reviles him. so why do it? well, it's a reminder of a previous rally at madison square garden which was one of america's darkest moments. plus, the senate race in texas is a virtual dead heat. and a victory by colin allred

over ted cruz could save the democratic senate majority. congressman allred joins me tonight. but we begin tonight with the words of retired four star general john kelly, who for the first time is speaking out about donald trump on tape. during this interview with michael schmidt of the "new york times," kelly delivered a stunning rebuke of his former boss's character. >> certainly the former president is in the far-right area, he's certainly an authoritarian. admires people who are dictators. he has said that. so he certainly falls into the general definition of fascist, for sure. >> he commented more than once that, you know, that hitler did some good things too. and of course, if you know

history -- again, i think he's lacking in that -- but if you know what hitler was all about, you'd be pretty hard to make an argument that he did anything good. >> if he was left to his own devices would he be a dictator, if he didn't have people around him? >> i think he'd love to be -- i think he'd love to be just like he was in business. he could tell people to do things and they would do it. and not really bother too much about whether -- what the legalities were and whatnot. >> that was donald trump's former homeland security director and chief of staff. so what compelled a conservative military man, who praised some of trump's policies and helped implement them, to allow recordings like that to become public? for one thing, trump's willingness to turn the military against americans like you. >> and i think this issue of

using the military on -- to go after -- american citizens is one of those things i think is a very, very bad thing -- even to say it for political purposes to get elected, i think is a very, very bad thing. let alone actually doing it. >> now you would think that a bomb shell like this would be a game changer, plastered on the front page of ere newspaper in america. but 12 hours after "the new york times" posted trump's fascist ideations, here is the front page of their print edition, not one word. not one reference to their own interview with general kelly. take a second and think about that. the republican candidate for president says that adolph hitler, who promoted the big lie about a kabul of jews and marxist plotting against germany and used that lie to exterminate millions of minorities including 6 million jews across europe,

gypsies, disabled people, people marched into concentration camps and shot or starved to death after being used as slave labor, that guy. according to donald j. trump, did some good thing. and there's not one word about it on the "times" front page? what is happening? kelly, a four star general joins general mark milley, who calls trump a fascist to the core. trump's own vice president, mike pence, former trump cabinet secretaries james mattis, mark bolten and a string of other former trump officials in warning americans about the man they worked for. because he is in their view the dictionary deaf mission of a fascist. and somehow it's not a screaming headline? how do the other political news sights react, you might ask. "the washington post" didn't bother to mention it. what about the swing state papers? nothing. the political sites sort of

buried it. politico assured us not to be distracted by trump's side show because he has a real campaign strategy. axios tells us trump's closing message is to make a splash. yeah. hitler did some good things. arnold palmer's penis and turning the military to your own -- into your personal -- own personal ss army is all just so splashy. it was left to vice president kamala harris to point out just how important general kelly's message is. >> this is a window into who donald trump really is. from the people who know him best. from the people who worked with him side by side in the oval office and in the situation room. donald trump is increasingly unhinged and unstable. and in a second term, people like john kelly, would not be there to be the guardrails against his propensities and his

actions. those who once tried to stop him from pursuing his worst impulses would no longer be there. >> what's left of the republican party is a cad ray of people who in a display of true coward es and complicity defend and dismiss the danger staring us all in the face. what they're defending is not just a man who thinks hitler did some good stuff, but someone who said he wants military generals like hitlers. and already said if he doesn't win, the jewish people had a lot to do about that. there's a reason trump is drawn to hitler. even a propaganda, people thought it insane could ultimately prevail. in 1990, vanity fair reported

that trump's first and now deceased wife ivana told her lawyer that trump kept a book of hitler's speeches in his bedside cabinet. she also told a friend that trump's cousin, who worked at the trump organization, used to walk into trump's office, click his heels and say, heil hitler, possibly as a family joke. jonathan karl in his book about the trump administration shed some light on why trump embraces authoritarians, white nationalists and anti-semites. according to one account, chris christie, who was working with trump during his first campaign, urged him to disavow david duke's endorsement. since he was slow to do so. because, quote, those people vote, too. now i know people love to dismiss these concerns as trump di rangment syndrome of taking trump too seriously. really? really? remember barack obama or joe biden former staffers saying

they dug hitler. and let's not forget trump's own running mate jd vance who famously said that trump just might be america's hitler. he's not wrong. joining me now is ruth been gee yat, history professor at new york university who writes about fascismauthoritarianism. and olivia troy. a member of republicans for harris. i do want to start with you, olivia. i just want to read to you from bob woodward's book "war." general milley said he is the most dangerous person ever. i had suspicions when i talked to you about his mental decline and so forth, but now i realize he's a total fascist. he is the most dangerous person to this country. a fascist to the core. milley repeated to me. i will never forget the intensity of his worry. you have warned as well, olivia about him. you worked with him. what do you make of the benign

reaction to the revelation that donald trump praised hitler and wants a hitler army? >> i think it's incredibly disturbing because it says that we are normalizing this pattern of behavior by donald trump. and that is incredibly alarming for where we are as a country right now in terms of what we're up against when it comes to a figure like donald trump. he is a wanna be authoritarian figure. what he wants in these comments what you're hearing from the generals is he wants blind loyalty from the military. that's what he's asking for, right? when he says he wants hitler-like generals and general kelly is talking about that. he's asking them to have loyalty to him, one man, not our constitution, not the freedoms and ideals that our country is built on. it's about him. >> and can i just ask you, you worked in the white house. you know john kelly. john kelly is a conservative, right? he's a pro-trump conservative, right? he's not some never trumper. >> no. he is definitely conservative.

i worked with general kelly at dhs when i first started in the trump administration when he was there and i worked with him when i first started in the white house. and he is a conservative-leaning person. i also say, it took a lot for him to finally go on the record like this because generals just -- they serve in nonpartisan ways and it's very hard for them to take that step to become political. it was hard for me to take that step and step away from my career. i had to walk away from it because i was an intelligence officer and we serve in a nonpartisan way. when people like this, this unprecedented group of voices that serve directly and watched donald trump's hand, are all coming to warn america that this is dangerous. that this man is a fascist. we should definitely listen because these are not poem we normally operate in political circles, right? this is unprecedented. >> yeah. and mark milley is one of the most gifted intellectual figures i have seen come across in my long time in media. he's a brilliant, gifted man.

he knows what fascism means. he knows the definition of it. this is not somebody who doesn't know what he's talking about. if mark milley says someone is a fascist, you might want to believe it. let me go to you, ruth, and play for you what we've been seeing all over the right wing airways. the people who want to vote for trump, they're not watching this network, they're watching that other one, fox. this is what they heard on fox from brian kilmeade. >> i could absolutely see him go, you know what, it will be great to have german general that actually do what we ask them to do knowing that's maybe not fully cognizant of the third rail of german generals who are nazis, whatever. >> not fully cognizant of the third rail of german generals who are nazis whatever. really? donald trump knew enough to lie about his own background. he is of german extraction. he used to lie, including in his own autobiography claiming to be

swedish. and his father pushed that lie because they were renting to jewish folks. wouldn't rent to black people but did want to rent to jewish people in new york. so he and his dad knew enough to lie and lie about being swedish and rather than their actual german extraction. why would you now try to make the excuse, he just doesn't know about germany and things? what do you make of those excuses, ruth? >> this is just people who realize that it's very -- let's put it this way. it's very threatening to the trump apologists to have people of this stature, you know, multiple generals coming out and saying the words that trump is a fascist. and these are people who know that trump, as olivia said, trump is all about loyalty to his person. he doesn't want them to be loyal to the constitution or ideals of duty or service to the country, just to him. and these are people who know history. and they know what the outcome

is for militaries that serve people, like hitler and people like trump who are just about loyalty. and i'm saying this as somebody whose book is one third about military coups and hitler is in there. and militaries are decimated. they're ravaged by corruption. they lose their ideals because they're forced to have this kind of brutal violence, offered against their own people. and at the end of world war ii, thousands and thousands of german officers, including generals, killed themselves. dwoent hear about that in 1945 when hitler of course, killed himself. >> yeah. >> so they know the outcomes for militaries. these are guardians of militaries, general milley, general kelly. they don't want that fate for the american people. and they certainly don't want that fate for the american military. >> yeah. imagine being a young soldier, being asked to shoot your own people, to shoot americans.

donald trump has made more than 100 threats to prosecute or punish his per zeed enemies. his admiration for chinese generals. during the george floyd protests he wanted to have the people shot in the streets. let me play two quick sound bites. i'll play one and this is governor sununu, the governor of new hampshire making also excuses for trump. >> we've heard a lot of extreme things about donald trump from donald trump. it's kind of par for the course. it's really unfortunately with a guy like that, it's kind of baked into the vote at this point. >> olivia, why are republicans doing that? >> yeah. i watched him do that earlier. and it was angering to say the least. i used to have tremendous respect for someone like chris sununu. it's a betrayal of republican party value. because i can tell you this, traditional conservatism does not stand for this. it would be appalling from many presidents from the past watching all these republicans

defend this. quite frankly this is heinous. no, this is not just bluster and hyperbole. this is very serious. this is about someone who really is trying to undermine our democracy and should he come back to the oval office, i have no doubt he'll carry out these acts. i was there for the discussions, as you mentioned, about shooting americans. that is unpresidential and un-american, full stop. and i would also say to chris sununu, how embarrassing. the entire world is watching us right now. they're watching what is happening in america. what message are we sending to them with donald trump at the helm here. even the republican party, right? >> yeah, indeed. on the other end of the spectrum, in terms of courage, major paul eaten was on this show last night and made a tiktok video calling for more people to step forward the way you've heard -- now at least behind the scenes, mark milley and general kelly do. here is general paul eaten. >> we need those two men who swore an oath to support and

defend the constitution of the united states against all enemies, foreign and domestic, to come out and state exactly how they feel about former president trump. that he is a domestic enemy. that he must never again be the commander in chief of the armed forces of the united states. general milley, general mattis, get out there, talk for us, tell everybody what you know. you cannot walk past this mistake. please do so. do it vigorously. and do it now. >> ruth, he said that after having been on our show and talked about fox news, you know, giving disinformation, even on military bases. please close by talking about the courage of men like paul eaton who is willing to put his face on tv live to say the things and where that stands in terms of fighting autocracy. >> this is -- it's so important. and we know that when we're trying to get -- if you lost

would invade poland. the german-american held this rally at the garden to celebrate the rise of naziism. it was advertised as a pro-american rally and featured a 30 foot tall portrait of george washington but flanked by swastikas. nazi salutes were raised by the crowd. there was also violence at this rally by police officers and those inside and outside who protested the gathering. new york journalist dorothy thompson once interviewed hitler in 1931 was at that rally, sitting in the press box. she was famous for speaking out against fascism abroad and at home and the first american journalist to be expelled from nazi germany from criticizing the regime. thompson's biographer recounted during the speeches thompson began to laugh loudly and disruptively after being escorted out of the building by police, she returned to her seat where she was surrounded by a

dozen storm troopers. thompson then proceeded to cause a second scene by shouting bunk at the stage. after leaving the event, dorothy thompson told a reporter, quote, i was amazed to see a duplicate of what i saw seven years ago in germany. tonight, i listened to words taken out of the mouth of adolph hitler. joining me now is nbc news presidential historian michael beschloss. thank you for being here, michael. >> of course, joy. >> i want to note the way that hitler was covered in the 1930s was this way. let me put up "the new york times." hitler driving force, fiery oratory was to woo men of all. energy in reserve. germany's deuce. and so there was the benign treatment of hitler. then you have hitler doing the holocaust. and americans respond by holding a rally, a nazi rally in madison

square garden. your thoughts. >> well, that's exactly right. and the truth is that in february of 1939, this thing was to so-called celebrate george washington's birthday, if you can believe it. and the premise of this rally was that the air of george washington for americans was adolph hitler and that americans should not only support hitler but they should and just think of the echo of this in 2024. they should make america into a german-type fascist country that would be align with hitler and rule the world, instead not only did hitler lead the way to the holocaust, but world war ii forces a league with him killed upwards of half a million americans. >> and if you look at polls back then, gallup polls back then, americans very much wanted -- at least in the polls wanted to support europe. but they didn't want to be part of the war. it wasn't until japan attacked us that americans wanted anything to do with the war.

1941 at american first committee rally and spoke at madison square garden as well. trump is kind of a charles lindbergh, isn't he? he's somebody who touts hitler ideas and is famous. >> yeah. i think it cleans up trump to say that he's like charles lindbergh who i think someone of the great monsters of world history. so, that tells you what i think of all this. >> wow. >> this is how hitler was normalized. donald trump has spent nine years normalizing hitler in all sorts of ways, not explicitly in public, although in private he has been. but in terms of trying to suggest ideas such as, you know, people are vermin on our culture. comments that if he doesn't win and jews don't vote for him, they will be some extent to blame. the reason why that rally in 1939 was in madison square garden was because the nazis who organized it said let's have it

final impression. well, in the next two weeks harris will be putting her courtroom experience to the test as she makes the most important closing argument of her life. why voters should make her the next president of the united states. and she has some big plans to do it. nbc news is reporting that on tuesday, harris is planning to make a major closing argument speech in washington, d.c. at the ellipse, the same spot where trump spoke shortly before his supporters stormed the capitol on january 6th, 2021. it comes after the vp said in an interview last night with nbc's hallie jackson that her team is preparing for the very real possibility that trump will once again just declare victory on election night before all the votes are counted. >> and we have the resources and the expertise and the focus on that as well. >> so you have teams ready to go, is that what you're saying? are you thinking about that as a possibility? >> of course. >> harris will also make a closing argument to voters on the threat trump poses to

women's rights. in the state she's calling ground zero of the nation's extreme abortion bans, texas. the vp will hold a rally in houston on friday, where she'll be joined by some of the women who have been affected by texas' draconian laws. harris will also be joined by democratic senate candidate colin allred, who ichallenging ted cruz. joining me is colin allred. thank you for being here. let's talk about that. the closing argument the harris campaign is making about the dangers of donald trump. what is your closing argument regarding your senate race against ted cruz. >> well, thanks, joy. thank you for having me on. listen, the fact is that ted cruz is too small for texas. and we know this. his vision for us is too small. he sees that we can do together is too small. but he's also uniquely responsible for this abortion ban that's had horrific consequences here in texas. i know for folks around the

country, you read these stories in the news, maybe you see it on tv. i've got on the know so many of these women who have come forward and many tell me in photo lines with tears in their eyes. and it's just wrong. it's deeply un-american. it's untexan. i'm a fourth generation texan. we believe in freedom. and this is not it. and when we beat ted cruz here in texas, make roe v. wade the law of the land again. that's something the entire country has to get involved with. >> so abortion is a huge issue. we did a town hall with vice president harris last year on that very issue. and we know that amanda and all these cases are extremely strong arguments. but there's more in texas going on. there is an immigration argument that donald trump is using to the point of calling people vermin. he is recently now having been quoted in an atlantic piece as having complained about paying

$60,000 for a woman who was killed, who was mex an-american and saying it doesn't cost $60,000 to bury an f'ing mexican. there are clear racial issues at play. houston, hamilton county, the vice president will be is the site of intense voter suppression by the governor of that state. so, beyond the abortion issue, how are you going -- also the issue of guns. uvalde is in texas. on issues like guns, voter suppression and racism, donald trump's racism, are you making that case? >> well, listen, you know, ted cruz is responsible for so much of what we're dealing with as a country. if folks don't like the way things are happening in d.c., i think most folks don't, well, you know, ted cruz kind of introduced this version of politics. and he is uniquely responsible not only for our abortion ban but also for preventing us from passing legislation to help secure the border or to fix our broken legal immigration system.

he's somebody who every single chance he gets votes against legislation that's good for our state. that's the choice that we have here in texas. is six more years of somebody who is too small for our state. or someone like me, who is son of our state, fourth generation texan, raised here by a single mom as a public schoolteacher, captain of the football team in baylor, played in the nfl, been a civil rights lawyer, served in congress as the most bipartisan texan in congress. when we win here in this race, it will say a lot about who we are as texans but also i think it will be something that the entire country will understand better who we are. i want folks to go to colinrecallred.com. get involved with us. make sure to beat ted cruz, restore fundamental rights to texas women. there's nothing more important. >> well, let me go back -- i'm going to dig in deeper. again, hamilton county is one of the most voter suppressed places in the country thanks to the governor and secretary of state and other republican officials who run that state. how do you get around that voter

suppression? and get houston out? texas also happens to be the source of the largest physical number of black voters in america. how do you get them out? and how do you get latino voters out specifically? >> yeah. well, it's actually harris county, joy. the point is right. it's been a focus for so long because it's our biggest, most diverse county. and we're already seeing in the early voting numbers is that texans are saying you're not going to stop me from voting. when i first got involved in voting rights, doing that long before i ran for office, the conversation was much different because the attacks on the right to vote were much more subtle at that time. now they're pretty much openly saying we don't think certain folks sloub should be voting. that's triggering a backlash. we're organizing and doing our work and there are literally tens of thousands of doors that are being knocked on and phone calls being made and that's important. but it's also true that texans are waking up to the fact that their vote must be so powerful they're trying to stop you from doing it. we're seeing signs in the early
