on this saturday night before the election, both tickets hit north carolina.

in charlotte, former president trump taking the stage later in the hour in greensboro as the nation gears up for the most consequential and eerily unpredictable elections of our lifetimes. lifetimes. so, three days left and the heat is on to win over undecided voters if there are any out there. and the closer the margins across battleground states the tighter the race will be. the saturday both campaigns have descended on the state of north carolina. vice president kamala harris rallying in charlotte after spending most of her day stumping in atlanta. >> we still have work to a.do. we still have work to do. but here is the thing i know about everybody here, we like hard work. ork.
7:02 pm
hard work is good work. hard work is joyful work. and make no mistake, we will win. win. >> here shortly, former president trump is supposed to rally in greensboro, north carolina. that is, if he ever leaves the stage where he is right now in virginia. in pennsylvania we will see michelle obama campaign for the harris ticket. we will monitor all of this over the course of the next two hours. we want to dig into the sinister escalation by the trump campaign and its allies to so doubt about the election. while he is in north carolina tonight, he and his running mate, j.d. vance, have set their sights on the key state of pennsylvania, running attacks about the security of the states elections and ramping up
7:03 pm
allegations of voter fraud. bogus claims and fake videos are circulating so fast that the fbi had to come out today and address them. a saying in a statement that election integrity is among our highest priorities and the of is working closely with state and local law enforcement partners to respond to election threats and protect our communities as americans express their right to vote. the fbi has debunked two videos falsely claiming the fbi had apprehended three groups committing ballot fraud and a second related to the second gentleman, doug emhoff, saying these videos are not authentic, are not from the fbi, and the content they depict is false. there is also the looming specter of donald trump prematurely declaring victory on election day before the votes are counted or the election called. we know he will do this because that is what he did the very last time. his biggest allies are pushing him to do it as well like steve bannon, fresh out of prison.
7:04 pm
he had this to say. >> president trump came up at 2:30 in the morning and did what he should have done at 11:00 at night in 2020. i'm urging president trump, if the votes come in like it looks like they're going to come in, he should step up and inform the american citizens of exactly what is going on and not key people in the dark like what was done in 2020. >> as for -- democrats, while they fully expect trump to declare victory early, "it won't work. he did this before, it failed. if he does it again it will fail. " let's get right to the campaign trail. in greensboro, north carolina trump is expected to speak shortly. what are we expecting to hear from trump as we get to the closing stretch? there has been all kinds of stuff over the last day alone that you know, even by donald trump standards has been
7:05 pm
somewhat bizarre. >> reporter: yeah, you are right, ayman. i have been at rallies that have focused on arnold palmer's anatomy, shall we say, and now in the home stretch his rhetoric is escalating. look, north carolina is interesting because he is spending a whole lot of time here in these precious final days. he has two rallies here today and then he is coming back tomorrow and monday. north carolina is a state that democrats haven't won since 2008. he has not lost north carolina, but he is here playing defense because it is in play this time around and if he loses north carolina, that makes the road to 270 the difficult. the early vote is through the roof. it is record numbers including western carolina that was hard- hit by helling. and republicans are outpacing
7:06 pm
democrats in the early vote by about 50,000, which is unusual, especially given the skepticism of early absentee voting. so the trump campaign is pointing to that as a good sign for them. we will not know until election day if those are added votes, or if those are just some folks deciding to vote early. i will say to the point you are making in the intro there, right here in greensboro, as they are waiting for trump here, a video just played of the former president urging people to use every method that they can to vote, early, absentee, all of that, but then he ends the video saying the most important thing is making sure that they don't cheat because they are cheaters, emphasizing that is a possibility. again, we have seen no evidence of that in this election. but the crowd cheered when he said that. this narrative is something that his supporters very much believe and these lawsuits
7:07 pm
filed in pennsylvania in particular, they are saying they are huge lawsuits, let's be clear, these are pretty wrote lawsuits. this is the kind of thing that campaigns do file before elections and there has been no evidence of widespread cheating or fraud. there have been challenges and we have been reporting on those, ayman. >> we will check in with you throughout the course of the next two hours. with me now is our election law analyst and law school professor of political science and the former pennsylvania governor, ed rendell. rick, i will start with you. in the statement from the fbi, how concerned are you, how concerned should we be of the situation that we are facing when the fbi has to put out a statement to reassure the
7:08 pm
public of election integrity at the same time that we see donald trump and his allies pushing this false narrative that the other side are cheaters and that election denial is on is becoming a cornerstone message in the final days? >> this is very much like what donald trump was doing in the last election. much of it was tried to be spread over social media and it was unsuccessful because twitter was doing more to police misinformation and youtube is doing less. so it is important there are words that get out there. there are trusted sources of authority. when people hear of claims of fraud they almost always turn out to be wrong and so you have to take them with a grain of salt, but the fact is, you know, donald trump is feeding a
7:09 pm
republican base that has been primed at least since donald trump has been on the seat, since 2016, to believe that whenever donald trump loses it is because somebody is shooting ãcheating. it creates a volatile situation where millions may not accept election results if they do not go donald trump's way. >> governor, dasha burns was alluding to some of those issues in your state and they say the unique voting laws make it fertile ground for dubious voter fraud claims and lawsuits. but that is unlikely to stop the certification of election results. as we said, you still have trump and j.d. vance exploiting the state laws to make false claims of fraud. how concerned are you of that? >> i'm concerned. this is the same song they sung four years ago but a different verse and four years ago they filed 43 lawsuits against the election results or the process. we had a great attorney general then, josh shapiro and he went 43-0 and did not lose one challenge and many of those
7:10 pm
cases were cited by judges that donald trump had appointed to the bench. there was no chicanery going. just earlier this week he attacked the election procedures in lancaster and new york county and he said there were false ballots filed. there were not false ballots filed, but what was found was that there were fraudulent registration forms found in the workers found them themselves. we have great election workers all over the state. they take their job seriously and would not cheat for either side and the system works. this was found by the election workers, not by donald trump or his campaign, by the election workers. they sent it to the district attorney and those votes will
7:11 pm
not be counted and there will be a criminal investigation to see who was responsible. and that is how the system should work, and it did work in pennsylvania in 2020 and it will work again in 2024. >> rick, let me ask you about the stephen bannon soundbite that we played because it is all but certain that trump will declare victory prematurely. that is the fear, if he begins to trail in the results. he did it in 2020 and steve bannon said he should have come out earlier in the night and basically declared himself the victor and try to cast doubts on these results. but i'm curious to get your thoughts on how that plays out on election night if donald trump comes out prematurely and tries to declare himself the victor, or uses the closeness of the race or the uncertainty of the results to his advantage to sew that doubt. >> it is likely that if we see patterns like last year in a
7:12 pm
state like pennsylvania, moore reported votes will be for donald trump on election night and will be for kamala harris, just because the in person votes are counted first. rural votes are often reported faster than cities in both of these things lead to democratic votes being reported later. so he can try to play on this so-called blueshift or red mirage, but it is they in and i think we are inoculated against it. the race would be too early to call and then everybody will need to have patience. i don't think anyone who saw what happened last time -- donald trump declared victory last time and he did not win the election. i think that people know that. trump has been saying outlandish things for as long as he has been around and people will believe it or not believe it, you know, not based on reality but based on what they want to be the truth if they're going to accept those kind of statements.
7:13 pm
>> one of the biggest problems right now is misinformation and disinformation. it is not just trump pushing these lies out about pennsylvania. elon musk, the owner of x, he is using his platform to spread misinformation about voting in your state and he has set up camp in pennsylvania to campaign hard for trump, emerging as his biggest financial donor. it is one thing for trump to do it and it is another when one of the world's richest man and owner of the largest or one of the largest social media sites is platforming these lies. s. >> and they are still a big government contractor. they make billions of dollars from the government. it is a terrible situation and something should be done to rectify it in the future. i want to stress one thing that he said, pennsylvania has a particular problem. we are one of only seven states that say we cannot touch the mail-in ballots prior to 7:00 a.m. on election day, so as a
7:14 pm
result, it takes us a whole lot longer to get the mail-in ballots counted. we were blessed in 2024 and 2020, we had to certify the election results and so saturday after the election we tried an independent watch vote agency that i am a part of and we tried to get the legislature to change that and allow the ballots to be prepared three days prior to election day. that would have shortened the time, but the legislature cannot take on it, so it will be a delay with pennsylvania's count. when i could have it on probably the day after the election, so it raises the suspicion level. we have to explain to people for months now why that is, because it will help if the media stresses that point.
7:15 pm

in just a few minutes governor tim walz will take the case to voters in arizona. he is set to speak any moment. in the meantime, his wife is sitting -- getting ready for a set of events. last night harris and trump held dueling rallies in milwaukee, painting a stark contrast for the country. there are more than 1.3 million votes already cast in wisconsin. remember, president biden one of the state by 20,000 votes in 2020 and it was one of the states involved in trump's fake electors scheme. join me now is mandela barnes and the founder of long run pac. it is great to have you back on the show. you and your team were out talking to voters today. give me a sense of what you are hearing from folks there.
7:20 pm
are there any undecided voters at this point? >> thank you for having me. there has been so much energy and enthusiasm with our organizers and power to the polls. in milwaukee we sent out about 150 paid organizers today and also very close with the same number of folks that were out there. that was in partnership with the working families and then i went to kenosha and people have been knocking on doors as if their livelihoods depend on it, because that is the reality. and i can say, based on conversations with the organizers and volunteers, there have still been a number of undecided voters that they have been able to make contact with. i am as surprised as you are on that. there are folks where the information has not necessarily reached. >> what is the calculation among some of these undecided voters? what are they waiting to hear based on what you are hearing
7:21 pm
on the ground that will tip it one way or the other? >> the unfortunate part is that most of the folks that i talked to that said they came across someone who had not decided who they were going to vote for yet was likely due to a mischaracterization of either of the candidates, whether they thought things more favorably about donald trump that certainly were not true or things they believe that were complete lies about kamala harris. and so with all the money being spent, a lot of folks just don't know who to listen to and what to believe right now, and that is why it is so important that the grassroots organizing takes place, because that is where this race will be won or lost. >> there is no doubt that harris is making inroads with republicans in wisconsin. we have seen that across the country and she engaged the support of robert coles. you saw the former republican mayor, sean riley, one of the states biggest strongholds and what does this tell you about the anti-trump sentiment where you are? >> sean riley, who endorsed

kamala harris, i know him personally. up at great things to say about him. i had a chance to partner with him on a couple different things. but he is the sort of leader that is beyond partisanship in this regard because donald trump has not done that the republican party a great service. he has exposed a lot of the toxicity that already exists and a lot of folks wanted to believe it or not, it was there, but now they see the fruit coming to bear, and they want nothing to do with it. they are trying to get away from the party as quickly as possible. in this hyper partisan and byã environment, imaginary republican that would even consider endorsing a democrat, let alone for president of the united states of america, tells you all you need to know about the status of the republican party. >> let me give you some thoughts on the commission and
7:23 pm
what you read into it. they have gained 102,000 new voters in the past month. that number could grow since your state does allow same-day registration. does that number tell us anything about voter enthusiasm and turnout and how it might break? >> we do expect that number to grow. that will be because of the large grassroots push. and the large grassroots effort right now and the hundred plus thousand new voters does say a lot about what is at stake. i will not sit here and try to predict what the partisanship is or how that breaks down for us versus the trump camp, but what i can say is that it shows people are paying attention and people are getting involved in this race. we will not see the same type of falloff like we saw in 2016. >> all right, mandela barnes, the former lieutenant governor of wisconsin. i appreciate your insights, as always. next up, what voters are telling her about the war in gaza. gaza.

7:33 pm
that power, we have been talking through that. what does that look like? it means building a bigger coalition of allies, black, brown, pro peace allies. and under a donald trump administration, not only will the damage be extreme in gaza and lebanon and the middle east, but also i think the idea of how we actually build that more powerful movement and how do we push will be destroyed because everybody will be fighting for themselves. people will be divided and it will be extremely difficult, so i think that is one of the big arguments. i do think that the other one is to talk about what donald trump did in his first four years. because i think when people remember and remind themselves that he is the one who moved the embassy to jerusalem, donald trump is the one who put in place a ayman -- u.s. ambassador to israel who has interest in settlement expansion. he is the one who empowered that expansion and he will empower
7:34 pm
netanyahu with a blank check again and i think that is compelling and then the third one is, within the republican party, there is no resistance to any of this. within the democratic party there is resistance, there is a growing movement of members of congress on the inside, and allies on the outside that believe our policy towards israel, towards the middle east is wrong, and that we need to actually enforce our domestic laws. that does not exist within the republican party. so the chance of us continuing to build that movement has to come from within the democratic party, not by putting republicans in charge. >> what happens if the vice president wins and you have a large portion of this population who has either sat out or not vote? does that diminish them and more in a future administration that their votes or their voice does not matter anymore? r anym?

so why? i'm president, want to protect the women of our country and they said well, i'm going to do it whether the women like it or not. i'm going to protect them. >> donald trump is doubling down on his m.gas lighting, vowing to protect women. here is what kamala harris thinks about that. >> the majority of americans think women are intelligent t. enough and should have and be respected for their agency enough to make decisions for themselves about what is in their best interest, and not have their government, and certainly not have donald trump telling them what to do. and his latest comment is just the most recent in a series of examples that we have seen from him in his words and deeds about how he devalues the ability of women to have the choice and the freedom to make decisions about their own body. . >> with me now is the aclu chief advocacy offer and best-selling

author of for the love of men, it is good to have both of you with us. i will start with you and your reaction to what we heard from donald trump there. this claim that he will protect women whether they like it or not. and in the vice president's response? >> i'm going to do it whether the women like it or not might be the most truthful thing that donald trump has ever said. he lies about what he does in private with women and he lies about what he has done in public for women's rights but here he is with the truth and we have to be clear here, donald trump has created a new caste system in america where pregnant women have become the untouchables. and this is not my opinion. these are the words of an expert in the field, sarah rosenbaum who talked to propublica and said that er doctors are refusing to touch these pregnant women. and so what we have is not just a handful of women, what we have is thousands of women not being treated and you know,
7:53 pm
going through one of the most dangerous things you can go through as a woman, childbirth. that is far more safe than getting an abortion. and we are not talking again about a few. just in texas alone where two women alone have died from these abortion bans, we know that the amount of pregnant women who are dying in childbirth has increased by 56%, and so these politicians are creating a new hierarchy where they are at the top and the women who birthed them and will birth the next generation of americans are at the bottom. om. >> deirdre, abortion -related measures are on the ballot in 10 states. this is the first presidential election since roe versus wade. what are the factors at play in the fight for abortion rights? he recently argued it is about much more than who wins the white house. use. >> yes. and i'm actually speaking to you from jacksonville, florida where acu -- aclu volunteers and staff and others across the state are getting out the vote
7:54 pm
for the ballot initiative here in florida. florida has a six week ban in place which is functionally a complete ban. it starts before most women know that they are even pregnant. and we are seeing an avalanche of these reproductive rights ballot initiatives across the country, 10 this year alone and it is the response of the american people to the terrible dobbs decision and to these rights been stripped away from them. the american people support these doctors -- these decisions being in the hands of patients and their doctors, not politicians. and that is why i think we are going to have a restoration of the right to an abortion and states across the country on tuesday.
7:55 pm
>> before the break we had talked about the stories of these two women in texas who died under the states strict abortion ban. why is it so important to pay attention to these horrific losses that we are seeing now sadly increasing that are a result of delayed emergency care ? most people sometimes think of this abstractly, but this has real-life consequences on the lives of women in this country day in and day out now. >> they really do. and it counters the propaganda on the right that these abortion bans do not kill women when in fact they do. and it also dispels the idea that life of the mother exceptions actually work when in texas there is an exception apparently for the life of the mother, but what we are seeing is countless women not getting that exception, right? doctors not wanting to get involved because they could go to prison if they get involved in dealing with a complication
7:56 pm
that could be seen as them ending the fetal heartbeat. these exceptions are like the acknowledgment of policies. they only exist to coddle men like donald trump, weak men who need to control women's bodies and for them to feel less guilty about the consequences of their actions and of their policies, so it is important that we tell the stories, because when he got there, i am in pennsylvania right now talking to voters, they believe that these abortion bans protect life, when what they're doing is ending life. . >> this will be front and center on many initiatives across the state and the consequences if donald trump wins would be dire, as we said earlier. thank you so much, greatly appreciate it. te it. a quick reminder, with early voting underway, scan the qr code for the latest state-by- state data on nbc news.com. we will be right back. ack.
