good evening and welcome to politics nation. election day is less than two days away. tensions are high. and in a battered and divided nation. it's a very short race between two different messages and candidate. both of them and swing states. the vice president on the way to michigan and donald trump is rallying in north carolina. down to the final hours. both camps hold some of their last campaign events nbc's washington correspondent is in east lansing, ahead of kamala

harris is rally. a senior correspondent is in georgia. is the head of a rally for donald trump. >> reporter: good afternoon. from what is a boisterous crowd at michigan state. in east lansing, vice president harris is set to speak in an hour or so. they are cautiously optimistic and feeling good about the internal numbers as well as early voter turnout. the vice president has been making closing arguments that are balancing two things. saying that donald trump is a significant threat to democracy and he will put himself before the country and threaten the constitution but also making the argument of an optimistic

vision for the future and a vision that will say on day 1, there is a package of bills that will be focused on improving the lives of americans and lowering the cost of living. that is what she told me this week. also she said what keeps her up is when she thinks about how to make americans have a better future for themselves and better future for their family. it will be interesting to see the argument that she makes. the campaign is seeing numbers that show in this last week if you are a voter and a battleground state, they are winning by double digits. they are feeling good. the vibes are feeling good. we are now less than 48 hours away from election day. then we will see how long it takes to get results. >> what can you tell us about the trump messaging in today's

rally schematic -- ? >> reporter: they very much want to close on a message that, harris broke the economy in the border and donald trump is singularly equipped to fix it. that requires discipline. especially in the campaign closing days. we heard him ruminating about how if someone wanted to shoot him they would have to shoot through the so-called fake news, suggesting he would be okay with that and perhaps he shouldn't have left the white house after losing. what we are seeing right now is the campaign that says it is confident in the early voting numbers both for them and the lack of support they say they are seeing are putting them on a path to victory.

the way they are acting -- what they are telling us. they are spending a significant amount of time yesterday and today campaigning in north carolina. and there are relatively few credible pallets back to the white house. in a short time here he will rally in macon, georgia. a majority minority district in fact where the campaign needs to do better or needs to force kamala harris to form worse, particularly with african- american voters. trump has been horse and sounded frustrated. we will see which version of donald trump shows up in georgia. i think this is the campaign that is in explain and defend mode, more than oppressing the case mode. not necessarily where you want to be. >> he said if someone had to shoot him they had to shoot through the fake news people first and that would be all right with him. okay.

thank you to the two of you for your great reporting. joining me now is the deputy campaign manager to the kamala harris campaign. quentin, thank you for joining us. with just two days from the election, let's start with the latest. the nbc pulse tonight and this morning show the race tied at 49% among registered voters. the gender gap is widening with trump winning men by 18 points and harris ahead by 16 points with women. the final poll of battleground state shows most of them within the margin of error, except arizona where trump has a slight lead. pennsylvania and michigan are tied. harris has tipped ahead in some

states, including nevada, georgia and north carolina. what does the data tell you about the state of the race? >> thank you for having me. i would say the polls are all over the place. we feel good about what we are seeing. at the end of the day, the campaign that is going to win is the one putting in the work. since july we knocked on 16 million doors. we have been putting the candidate in the position to speak to the undecided. she has been out on the trail. all of our principles. the vice president and governor walz and his spouse and second gentlemen all out doing events at the same time. we know who the voters are and who we need to talk to. on top of that there is an agenda that will focus on all- americans.

donald trump is doubling down on his enemy list. americans are seeing that split screen and we will continue on the path we have been on. >> we saw some of the footage. the presiding bishop of the church, a great leader. there are some surprising news out of iowa last night where the final des moines register poll showed the vice president with a three-point lead in a state that democrats haven't won on the presidential level in 12 years. the survey was conducted by -- who has a track record for making accurate calls. it found significant support for harris among women, particularly older women. the lead was within the margin of error and other polling has shown trump with a solid lead.

what do you make of the numbers? >> what i will say, the polls can be all over the place. this will be a margin of the error race. it will be very close. that is why we have to get the remaining voters to make up their mind and that is my we continue to campaign as hard as we are. those that support us will have not voted yet. that is where the focus has been. again, the polls are all over and they are attempting to talk with the same group that are being inundated with knocks on the door and mail in the mailbox and phone calls and texts. we feel good about the numbers. we have work to do. >> you and i have talked at length during the campaign about how to shore up support

among young black men. this week, the naacp re- released a poll showing black men under 50 three, moved away and toward the vice president. if this trend turns out to be real, what do you think is driving young black men back toward democrats? >> we have talked about this. one of the things, even before the vice president was on top of the ticket, she was traveling the country hearing from black men about their concerns in america. since being on the trail she has had those same conversations, whether it be in barbershops are small mid businesses. and she brought it back and put together an agenda, specifically focused on african- american men. a lot of this is them seeing themselves prioritized within the democratic party and talking about what the future will look like.

she has put herself in a position on platforms that over index toward african-american men. she has been doing the breakfast club townhall. the vice president has been working to earn that support from black men, young black man in particular. we still have more work to do. that is my we are focused on making sure we turnout these individuals. if you don't, i encourage you to visit i will vote.com to make a plan to vote. all of the things in combination are what is driving the reversal of support for the vice president. >> is a former prosecutor, vice president harris understands the power of a closing argument. she made an appearance last night on saturday night live, reaching an audience of millions of people. earlier in the week, she gave a

speech on the ellipse in washington. the campaign said more than 75,000 people attended. trump held his controversial rally in madison square garden last sunday. then rode around in a garbage truck trying to capitalize on the misstatement from president biden. maybe these in these final days. >> closing arguments are to be sustained. they are meant to lay everything out on the table. i will break this down very simple. there time to get revenge on the enemies list. checking things off. things like lowering cost. making sure she is protecting

healthcare. if it means making a better future. i urge voters to listen to the remark coming out of the mouth when they are giving final speeches. it is more of the same divisive agenda and approach to politics. it is who he is at his core. meanwhile he is talking about you. donald trump is only talking about his problems. he is not talking about the future for american voters. it is all about him. it is an opportunity economy. that is as simple as i can put that contrast as we have these last 48 hours. joining me now is congressman

stephen hartford, democrat of nevada and chair of the black caucus. and congressman jim clyburn, democrat of south carolina. i want to start with you and your home state of nevada. i was with you at some rallies this week. where the vice president is three points ahead, according to that final siena poll. i mentioned that. that is encouraging news for democrats that wants to early voting totals from rural republican leading counties. where do you think things stand in your state right now?

>> the polls are about marching forward but we are going to win based on margin of effort. volunteers are making calls. hundreds of people today going to doors. talking to those that have not yet voted. to make sure they know that they have the power. we are going to win. i am proud that she has support among independents and black voters and latino voters. the white working class are turning out.

i just left an event at the christian worship center we have hundreds of people turning up after church. we are ready to win. >> in addition to nevada and as i mentioned the times polling shows the shift in her favor and to other states. georgia and north carolina while trump is gaining some ground in the blue wall states of pennsylvania and michigan. congressman clyburn, nobody knows politics better than you. do you think the polling gains for harris in the south could be signs that some african- american voters could be breaking for the vice president in these final days e >> thank you for having me. i just left north carolina.

i can to you things are picking up. they are shifting. they are shifting toward the vice president. it indicates, i put the midwest in that same bucket but i put southeast. i don't know if you have noticed that but the trend in these areas, they usually mirror each other. i feel strongly that we are moving in the right direction with these numbers.

what do you make of the closing arguments from the two campaigns that you have heard so far? >> thank you for having me on. governor casey, great to see you. my wife and i were canvassing in philly. i will see what i saw is enthusiasm, excitement and no ambiguity. i met young black men and young black women and older black men and women and all kinds of families. they come out of their houses and tell us what neighbors were doing and what plans they had made and what votes they had cast. there has been a shedding of the cloud of uncertainty that i experienced in philadelphia that was so positive and so affirming. i am feeling good. someone that is skeptic on a

good day, i say put them aside and do the work. so many people have organized themselves alongside the campaign. >> what are your thoughts? >> i appreciate hearing what he had to say about philadelphia. that will be critical. will they have the turnout that democrats want. i had a call today with people that have been hanging around me for 30 years or 25 years. everybody came to that same conclusion that it is too close to call. one of the people, she was my chief of staff, she said never before in any election, she said never before have i had no sense of who is going to win.

she had a bit of a sense that may be democrat's were coming home. it will be a total turnout. who will get the people out. that means it is what the ground game is all about. i would love to tell you who i think is going to do it. it is possible for trump, even if he doesn't win michigan and pennsylvania. if he is able to win pennsylvania that he probably wins. we don't know. i keep trying to pin him down. i keep saying tell me what you think. they are refusing to give a prediction. what an amazing situation and we have to hope and pray, whomever wins, the other side, they have to be calm. we cannot afford disruptions in the kinds of things with that we all fear.

>> i had senator brown of ohio on the show yesterday who is fighting to keep his senate seat. what is your take on this race which could determine the balance of power in the senate. >> here is the thing. if trump wins ohio by only six points, it would be my sense that -- will be reelected. if he wins by seven points, anything more than seven, the arithmetic works against brown but he probably could not survive that. the recent polls have it six and seven on the bubble. one more time, it is a case where we don't know. he is a scrapper and a fighter and he is tough. sometimes the numbers just

don't work. we have to see what the ultimate result is. i hate to come on here and say i don't know because no one ever says they don't know. >> between you and i, a lot of people that say they know they don't know. governor patrick, you were a trailblazer in massachusetts, becoming the first african- american governor. kamala harris could make history if she is successful as the first woman and first black woman of indian descent to become president. she has not talked much about her identity, even as her opponent has run a racially charged campaign against her. what are your feelings on that is one that has become a trailblazer in that area? >> it is fascinating.

she doesn't have to mention what she is or what her background is. it is the first thing people think about. it is not like she has to make that case. there is more to her than being the first woman or first black woman or first woman of east indian descent. there is a depth and range of experience and an empathy, and understanding and a curiosity. or learning the things she thought she knew. that is the kind of leadership we want. on the other side there is someone that thinks a lack of decorum and meanness is entertainment and has turned that notion into a political movement, calling up grievances of people. a lot of those grievances that he talks about that are experienced by the rural people in white working people of the

same wounds and frustrations and anxieties that black and brown people in cities have been anguished about. we need leadership that sees the common pain and draws solutions in government and outside government that speak to all of us and wants to serve all of us. i am not counting john, by the way, an outcome in or out. if it were not close i still wouldn't predict the winner. we have work to do right up until the polls close. i am just feeling that momentum on our side. >> my thanks to deval patrick and john casey. coming up, bob casey joins me with just days left until his campaign in the control of the senate, hanging in the balance. i will be in winston-salem north carolina tomorrow as head of the national action network

thank you for joining us. what is your sense of where things stand right now connect >> it is very close. both in our race and the presidential race. i have never seen the kind of energy that i have seen, probably not since 2008. just yesterday, more than 800,000 doors were knocked on by volunteers across the state. people are energized to engage voters to keep working to earn the vote. i have to continue to do that. yesterday we were in western pennsylvania and in the middle of the state. today in southeastern pennsylvania and now headed to the northeast.

we know that corporate profits went up five times the rate of inflation. when that happened, prices went up and people like me said why don't we do something about it? investigating price gouging. sanctioning these companies and rollback the big breaks. my opponent opposed that. he wants to be a senator representing pennsylvania and go to washington to vote for those big breaks. we can't do that. we have to make sure we give the middle class a tax cut and bring back that generous version that we had in place in 2021 that helped 2.2 million families in pennsylvania. >> yesterday we had senator brown of ohio who is locked in

the most expensive campaign of the cycle. your senate race is the second most expensive which is now approaching $300 million. you are running against executives that can dip into their own wealth. what are the challenges of such a hot dollar race? >> you hit the nail on the head. we are both in races where outside groups, big super pacs surrounded by or funded by billionaires are coming into the state to attack. i am almost as anxious to beat my opponent or the building as a family opponent.

could this be an indicator of something larger? it is not a usual poll result from the des moines register. >> it is indication of what has been happening. we have seen this over the last several election cycles where the suburbs became more and more blue. when i was in the house of representatives a representative henry hyde's old district. that is now solid blue and moving further west.'s your icing the engine behind this is exactly as he said. independent women. women that are standing up to protect reproductive rights. not just about access to abortion but the ability to

have or make decisions about your body. 's or in the case of myself, trying to start families. donald trump is the guy that took away the rights from the next generation of women. that is a major driving force. been turning out in support of pro-reproductive rights. >> the pollster that conducted the survey pointed out, this selection will be the first in the state since it passed the six week abortion band. 59% disapprove of the restrictions. the new york times poll found abortion is now tied with the economy is the issue wisconsin

voters cared more about. that is since that decision overturning roe versus wade. >> you will see voters come out and support the ability for women to make decisions. every time abortion has been put on the ballot, the initiative whether kansas or ohio, they have come out and reaffirmed that they want women to make their own decisions about healthcare. you are seeing this in iowa as well. so many women has been caught up in this. the other thing, you are seeing doctors and healthcare professionals fleeing the state. you are seeing healthcare very act if we being hurt in your being people -- the doctors are not there anymore. i think that reproductive

choice and reproductive health care will be one of the top drivers. >> it is what he calls protection at a rally in green bay on when they. he said he would protect women, whether they wanted it or not. how do you think that kind of talk lands with voters? >> it is what you hear from domestic abusers. that is the language you get. women are not going to trust donald trump to protect us and we don't want him to. he is the guy that put us in danger. he has caused the supreme court to be swapped over with these three extremes of justices and has resulted in women dying across this country. young women bleeding to death on gurneys because doctors are

afraid to operate because of abortion bands -- bans. >> you are a decorated war veteran. you lost both of your legs in iraq. in the final days, we have heard from generals who worked for trump now describing him as a dangerous fascist. we have heard trump himself talk about using the military to target americans that he considers to be the enemy from within, including some of your colleagues in congress. is a veteran what worries you most about the possibility of trump returning as commander in chief q -- ? >> the fact that he loves dictators and fascists. he is going to turn over

security to putin and he names victor or bohne someone he admires is chilling to the bone. someone that served for 23 years in the military, defending liberties to have somebody potentially becoming commander in chief who wholeheartedly embraces a guy like vladimir putin is deeply unsettling. i hope the military will step out and cast their vote to oppose donald trump as well. we don't need him as commander in chief. someone that will turn over security to alexa vladimir putin or victor obama -- o'bannon. robert kennedy junior would have a big role in the administration when it comes to health. we are starting to find out what that means. he would advise all systems to remove fluoride from the public

water supply on day 1. trump said he was okay with the idea and was open to banning vaccines. he also said that kennedy would have a big role in the administration if he were to win. joining me now is dr. mark galli, former secretary of california human services. thank you for joining me today. let me go right to it. what is the risk involved in giving someone like robert kennedy junior, such an influential role in determining health policy? >> first, thank you for having me. we will go straight to the point. rfk in a leadership role over our health, means bad things for a lot of americans.

take the fluoride issue that just came up and the support of trump for that idea means we unwind what is one of the top 10 public health achievements of the country in the last century , giving kids and adults access to the floor at the need to strengthen teeth and prevent cavities. i hope there is a plan to increase the number of dentists that we have. that is just one of many concerning issues. i am a pediatrician, i have seen the before and after when vaccines are introduced. if robert kennedy junior has his way, we are going to return to a place where emergency rooms and pediatric wards are full of kids suffering and potentially dying from vaccine preventable disease. the list goes on and on. we should be concerned.

>> republicans are taking aim at obama care. mike johnson promised major changes to healthcare if donald trump wins. and expansion of funding under the affordable care act expires at the end of next year. harris has called for extending the funding to protect obama care while trump is only spoken of concepts of the plan. what would be the consequences of unraveling the aca after all of these years? >> the extreme, 45 million americans benefited whether people have tracked it or not or because of the medicaid expansion in some states or a number of working americans that otherwise didn't get coverage through their employer , buying it on one of the state or federal exchanges, 45 million americans benefit from

this legislation. it has been improved and pushed forward and it is making a difference. i was there in 2014 and before. i saw uninsured individuals who didn't have coverage, going to the emergency room for basic care. that started to shift and now we are seeing so many getting in front of chronic disease and illness. i guarantee you every view or know someone that has benefited. themselves or family members. that will make a big difference if this gets unwound and the ongoing funding that vice president harris and her administration, if and when she wins pushes forward will only strengthen that for so many. >> thank you for being with us.

with the election two days away, i have been thinking of poll workers rubie freeman and her daughter shane moss, who this week took delivery of millions of dollars in assets from rudy giuliani. he handed over his apartment and his mercedes and even old yankee memorabilia. after being found liable for defaming them. the settlement is to serve. rubie and shane were never in it for the money. there are roughly 3/4 of 1 million workers this year that
