2:00 pm
good evening and welcome to politics nation. the path forward. tomorrow democrats will face their first full week after a resounding defeat at
2:01 pm
the ballot box. has left the party questioning how to approach the next several months if not years. they are trying to -- against what appears to be a complete takeover of our government by a gop that dominates the senate with just two races not called with 19 house races uncalled. republicans are within striking distance of the majority. trump will meet with president biden on wednesday as they continue preparations for his return. i will be there in january to send a message. joining me now is yvette
2:02 pm
clark representing new york's ninth district and is the congressional black caucus first vice chair. to start, 19 house races have yet to be called. they need six more house seats to secure majority while democrats need 14. what has your reaction been and what are you expecting going forward with republicans control three prances of government connect >> thank you for having me. we expect and hopefully vote to be counted. very important seats. it is taking a bit longer as we expected. it will determine ultimately what the configuration will be.
2:03 pm
in the event that democrats don't prevail, we will have both the presidency and the congress in the hands of republican majority. that will be a huge challenge in terms of advancing policy in those that are counter to what we know is project 2025. we will have to do a lot of work to strengthen communities. >> in spite of all the talk, vice president harris only lost two points among black voters nationally comparison to biden in 2020. 85% of the black vote still supported her nationally. what
2:04 pm
role is the congressional black caucus going to play peanut -- ? >> we have to make sure we are in every portion of the nation. making sure people are educated about what we are to experience. we need to make sure they are strengthened in terms of programs whether municipal or state level that can help them to whether what is predicted the storm. we have to leave the confines of dc to build common cause in the nation on the ground where people live and where they are hurting and where they have been deceived or disillusioned.
2:05 pm
>> you were wanting that the country was not prepared for the level of disinformation. in particular, artificial intelligence and deep fakes. center for digital hate pound false or misleading claims made by elon musk on his platform had 2 billion views. what role do you think this had on the election connect >> it had a profound impact. there is no doubt. we are all hardwired on a virtual life which includes news through social media. some of whom have no integrity to the claims that they make. it is an addiction for many.
2:06 pm
not fact checking but consume what they are being fed on a daily basis. that will have a profound impact on the way that people view the world around them. it can be extremely disruptive. >> trump and allies campaigned on detaining and deporting migrants. many are trying to calm fears about who will be forced out and when. as cochair of the haiti caucus, you have been fighting for the rights and protections of the community, including those in springfield who were singled out by trump. how concerned are
2:07 pm
you about the mass deportation rest and what have you been hearing from the community and business leaders about how it could even financially and logistically even work ? >> it has sent shockwaves through immigrant communities. there were those awaiting the ability to adjust status like those with temporary protected status. they held onto hope that productivity in support of the country would yield better outcomes. clearly that has all changed. the rhetoric that we heard,
2:08 pm
leaves us with no alternative way of thinking. other than to realize, they will try to follow through on what some view as a threat to families who are of mixed status. the cruelty is always the point. the idea is if we drive enough fear into the communities and take under kania measures to remove individuals from communities, but it will cause mass confusion in many communities and second, it will be disruptive to the economy. we are all keenly aware of the role that immigrants play in the economy to -- it will be
2:09 pm
extremely disruptive to have a poorly thought out plan around deportation and mass deportation. >> and we have to deal with logistics. how much will it cost if it is even possible to find out who is here illegally connect also whether the countries will even allow us to bring them there. firefighters extinguished a second fire in prospect park new york. new york and new jersey have been placed under red flag warnings and air- quality alerts as a half a dozen wildfires have broken out amid historic drought. meanwhile the times reported
2:10 pm
the incoming administration is planning to withdraw from the paris climate accord and reshape agencies responsible for protecting the environment. all of this while we are seeing unprecedented natural scale of and massive scale in places we haven't seen before. is the republican denial is unsustainable in a situation that seems to be escalating? >> let me say this. we have seen a consistent pushback and denial of climate change and its impact. for many it is an economic imperative. for the fossil fuel industry and those that feed off of it to be in denial is to be
2:11 pm
enriched. for those on the ground in communities, we are seeing what drought conditions can mean. we are talking about perhaps even moving to a point where we will have to to ration water on a regular basis. the reservoirs are running low. we will see the impact of climate change. if we continue down the path of denial, it will only get worse. >> thank you for joining us this evening. joining me now is congresswoman brown of ohio and congressman goldman of new york.
2:12 pm
congratulations on your the elections. congresswoman brown, you just heard me, black soldiers came through, despite trump gains elsewhere. what would you say is the role of the black caucus for those voters with trump, returning connect -- ? >> we are going to be there on day 1 holding the administration accountable. let's be clear. trump did gain some black voters but he did not win. black voters voted for vice president harris overwhelmingly. black voters that shows trump will be disappointed. he has never delivered on promises to anybody.
2:13 pm
we will continue to be the conscience of congress. >> there were overgrown predictions that they would be deeper and roads. that did not happen. new york has been blue for decades. though she underperformed compared to joe biden while trump improved at the state level. in the city he made gains in every borough. how do you explain this? >> we will have to do a deep dive into some of the reasons. especially because we flipped three house seats to democrat last week.
2:14 pm
regained back almost all that we have lost. that is not entirely that the message that we have as the party is wrong, when you look at our policies, they are consistently supporting working families and trying to reduce the income gap and wealth inequality. we did not do a good enough job of messaging that and making it the center of the platform. trump got away with many lies. i heard you talking about the disinformation. there were rampant lies about what he did in the first term and what he plans to do. we did not do a good enough job of meeting people where they were and explaining how we are for them and trying to lift up
2:15 pm
americans with policies that give everyone access to the american dream. >> he has now won three times in a row in ohio. senator brown who we had on last week i just lost his reelection to bernie marino and jd vance's seat will be filled by an appointee of the republican governor. until a special election. how did democrats regroup connect >> tuesday's results were painful. we have a lot of work to do to rebuild and come back.
2:16 pm
the fact of the matter, when you think about me assign someone to counter that were able to prevail, it shows we can still win. you often hear me say, ohio is more read than it is -- the districts are drawn in such a way that they don't lend themselves to competitive districts but it is also important to note, there was a lot of voter suppression. i know people stood in line for at least four hours on the last sunday really letting. the fact that people had to endure such obstacles is discouraging. particularly to marginalized communities.
2:17 pm
there is work to do. i won't try to play political pundit but we need to take that into account. we have to take a deep hard look at what we can do differently. >> you are a former prosecutor. you served as counsel to house democrats during the first impeachment nbc is reporting that the doj is time to figure out how to wind down two federal cases against him. at the same time he is trying to get both federal and state cases wiped out, especially his felony sentencing in new york and the georgia election case which is on appeal. what are your thoughts? >> it is truly shameful that he
2:18 pm
appears to be avoiding accountability for the crimes that a grand jury charged him of. i am sick and tired of hearing republicans project that in any way shape or form that the biden doj weapon iced itself against republicans. it is the same doj that charged and convicted the president's son. don't tell me about weaponization when donald trump tried it over and over and already announced he will do it again. it is a travesty for justice. i understand the doj's policy that they cannot invite or prosecute a sitting president which will make it difficult to
2:19 pm
pursue these cases on a federal level. this is not the way our rule of law works to have one man above all else. that is effectively what the supreme court and now some voters have said. >> you have to raise this to both of you. i want to play sound of the potential next attorney general of the united states, alia lawyer mike davis on a podcast after the win, threatening new york state's attorney general over her investigations. >> let me say this to the new york attorney general. idea you to try to continue against president trump in his second term. listen here sweetheart, we are not messing around this time.
2:20 pm
we will put your fat imprisoned against conspiracy. i promise you that. think long and hard before you want to violate his constitutional rights or any other american's constitutional rights. >> your response? >> it is disgusting. i would urge him to go back to law school and learn how to prosecute a case. he has no idea what he is talking about and he is purely a political hack. the danger of the donald trump presidency is someone like that gets into positions of power where he will solely focus on politicizing what must be a nonpartisan role which is to run the criminal justice system and make the serious decision about whether or not to take away
2:21 pm
liberty. this is not a joke. mike davis better cool it because he is getting way out over his case. >> congresswoman brown? >> i am concerned that the supreme court in their ruling will mean he will not be held accountable and the fact that the people around him feel so emboldened to make open brazen threats against other elected officials is the threat to democracy that we all talked about. many people are not consuming news on these platforms, they are getting it on social media. they will continue to be emboldened to make these egregious threats to people in
2:22 pm
power, potentially without being held accountable. but you still have dan and i and we will exercise our power. >> thank you both for being with us. as donald trump takes a second oath, i will call for justice and fighting for change. ghting for change. at harbor freight, we do business differently from the other guys. we design and test our own tools and sell them directly to you. no middleman. just quality tools you can trust at prices you'll love.

2:32 pm
we had a great first term. i will govern by a simple model. promises made, promises kept. nothing will stop me from keeping my word to you. that was donald trump giving his victory speech. eluding to promises that could prove disastrous. let's talk about them. then former democratic congressman, max rose of new york.
2:33 pm
he is now a senior advisor. let's start with mass deportations. the day after his win, he told my colleague, but his plan to round up illegal immigrants would be carried out regardless of cost. i'm wondering, where would the money and manpower be coming from connect where would the people go. does any of it seemed possible? >> he will have to go to congress to get the funding. it looks like congress might be full republican control but the margins are still slim. that is not going to be easy. in addition, there is another cost which is the political cost . when you get elected you have a limited amount of capital. if you start spending it then it runs out. donald trump.
2:34 pm
very aggressive on immigration during his first term and once he got too aggressive with separating families and children, they had to dial it back. we will see where it goes. this was his number one issue so i think we can expect he is going to be as aggressive as he can. >> aggressive but there will be a lot of logistical questions to answer, including how he will find out who to send where and whether those countries will accept them. he can't just land in someone's country without being cleared. let me ask, talking of mass deportation, he and his allies are trying to blur the lines between citizenship and non- citizenship by ending birthright citizenship and deporting mixed status families
2:35 pm
, according to his former ice director. wouldn't this create a firestorm of legal challenges? >> 100%. a lot of these policies and decisions are going to be challenged. that will slow things down. he is going to need congressional support. a lot of house republicans are already looking up the midterm of his first term, there was a blue wave and democrats flipped 40 seats. a lot of those republicans don't want that same fate. they are going to be a little bit more cautious. >> another campaign promise was pardoning the january 6 rioters.
2:36 pm
he does have that power to do in many cases. hundreds are linked to groups like the proud boys and oath keepers. some are considered to be a national security threat. what could be the fallout q >> it is a clear instance of trying to understand causation and correlation when it comes to understanding his win. i can promise you he did not win because of his promises regarding january 6, he won despite those. when he undeniably goes through with pardons, it is imperative that the parties seizes the opportunity to hold him and his entire party accountable. it was easy for many over the past two years, they just said no. they did not dare any
2:37 pm
accountability. now it is the opposite. you will see democrats stand up and hold accountable. >> in a study published this week, the retail federation said his proposed tariffs would cost consumers up to $78 billion. can he impose those unilaterally? what are some of the immediate economy impact? >> they can impose the tariffs. he has that power. donald trump did not run on the consequences of what those actions will cause. you will see prices rise throughout the united states. consumers bear the cost. yet
2:38 pm
again, we will see this opportunity for democrats. what we also learned is we should have known this, when people vote, it is not just self-interest, it is self- expression. as the party is regrouping and looking to hold donald trump and the party accountable, we also have to do that in a way that practices the fact that politics should be a matter of at this and and not subtraction. a way that people don't find threatening but rather supportive. we can be that economic populists. we are right on the precipice of doing so. >> president trump also talked about firing generals, including those involved in afghanistan with trial. perhaps even the current joint chiefs or chair on top of that,
2:39 pm
he also intends to staff the department of defense with partisan loyalists. as a veteran yourself, what do you believe in the immediate pitfalls of such an unprecedented political intervention in military affairs. >> the strength of the united states has largely been been related to the fact that our men and women in uniform swear an oath to the constitution not a party. it is their legal responsibility to follow the law not just the orders of the commander-in- chief. they are obligated to disobey if they are unlawful. not just that legal precedent but also the way we conducted ourselves as a society in the military. it is so dangerous.
2:40 pm
it is something that can be stopped. with him going back to his first term, when he had the keys to the castle and tried to overturn obama care, through the power of a collective movement, we stopped at. we can do that again when it comes to instances like this because it will be disastrous for the country. >> give me an answer to the same question carlos. >> this is as sacred as it gets when it comes to democracy. the military has to be loyal to the constitution not any one person. we don't want to be like cuba where there loyal to castro. these are the types of things if donald trump tries to do, there will probably be a heavy political cost. >> thank you both for being with us. coming up, americans voted to
2:41 pm
protect abortion access across the country this year. how could the man that made the way for the fall of roe v wade, win? next we discussed that in the looming threat to reproductive health care. reproductive health care.

welcome back. despite democrat losses, voters in seven out of 10 states voted to protect or expand abortion- rights access. and arizona proposition 139 past, repealing the 15 week ban . in missouri voters overturned that near-total abortion ban. in deep red montana, abortion- rights were enshrined in the state constitution. even in florida, an amendment to protect abortion rights up to 24 weeks fell by just 3%, proven even more popular with voters than donald trump. joining me now is the president of planned parenthood, alexis mcgill-johnson.
2:46 pm
abortion-rights past and seven out of 10 states where it was on the ballot. some deep red states included yet the election of donald trump and possible republican control overshadowed that. trump said he wouldn't sign the national abortion ban saying it would be left up to the states. he hasn't said he would veto either. now, what are your concerns? >> thank you for having me on. you are absolutely right. when voters have the opportunity to express their hopes and dreams, state after state, particularly red states, we saw so many wins. i would say including florida. that was actually a decisive victory but for the fact there was an antidemocratic measure to hold that to a 60% threshold because we know what people
2:47 pm
have experienced. the stories of women dying in the middle of seeking access to care. we are worried obviously about what donald trump says. we saw him run away from his record and we are seeing him take under consideration all of the threats we learned about during project 2025 playbook. that means they could enforce a national abortion ban just by producing access to mifepristone. we could see them enact things without even federal legislation meaning they don't need senate and house to do that.
2:48 pm
is someone who bragged about overturning roe v wade even though he now said he would not sign a national ban, we are still concerned about the kind of access peep would be able to get. >> two planned parenthood organizations in missouri are suing over the near-total ban. it is one of the nation's strictest make no exceptions. also calling on missouri to drop other restrictions that would prevent providers from resuming care. next month, after voters chose to enshrine abortion-rights into the constitution. tell us more about the timing please. >> i'm not going to comment specifically on their legal strategy. this is about broadly ensuring that we are on a path to secure national expensive rights as it relates to
2:49 pm
abortion access. it means knowing state-by-state we have to fight. the opposition will not stop. they will find ways as they have in other areas to stop the enactment of the people's will. it is important to not just take the democratic win but also ensure that state courts are doing everything we are litigating to ensure. it is important given where missouri sits. it is an important oasis for those struggling to get out of state. >> vice president harris campaigned heavily on the issue yet even in swing states where abortion-rights initiatives were on the ballot and
2:50 pm
ultimately passed, donald trump still won. what do you make of voters who embrace trump but at the same time the abortion- rights that he created him self for weakening? >> the vice president ran a beautiful campaign and very thoughtful campaign. particularly when it came to abortion-rights. really helping lift the stories. all of that has been going wrong. we have to look at the ballot initiative and understand, there were seven initiatives. we did not break our serve. because we were able to connect. republican, independent and democratic voters that believe in freedom.
2:51 pm
you do not win without recognizing -- it is a nonpartisan issue for most. we saw a lot of people split the vote and in essence split freedoms. they have left the nation vulnerable by not only electing donald trump but also electing a senate that is full of antiabortion politicians. i am proud that we were able to hold seats like tammy baldwin and jackie rosen that will be powerful voices. the reality is, with donald trump and jb vance at the top, we have to worry about what they could enact, not given how folks really being behind project 2025.
