tv   Chris Jansing Reports  MSNBC  November 22, 2024 10:00am-11:00am PST

10:00 am
good day. i'm chris jansing live at msnbc headquarters in new york city. doj do over. with matt gaetz gone, will senate republicans be more inclined to back trump's new pick for attorney general? what we know about pam bondi and
10:01 am
her history as an election denier. plus, is it a cabinet or a casting call? trump leans heavily on tv personalities from pete hegseth to dr. oz as he staffs up a new administration. but does much time on the airwaves qualify you for time in the political trenches? and snow surprise. millions of people across the midwest and northeast hit with their first big winter storm of the season. i'm looking at you, browns players, making snow angels a day after temperatures were in the 60s. there it is. that's a football game. we got a lot to get to on this friday. but we start with donald trump. wasting no time and pivoting to another florida loyalist for his attorney general pick now that matt gaetz is out of the picture. this time it is 59-year-old pam bondi, former florida attorney general and trump impeachment lawyer known as a fierce defender of the president-elect and also an election denier. she issued this warning back in
10:02 am
mid-2023 about what would happen if trump got back to the white house. >> the department of justice, the prosecutors will be prosecuted. the bad ones. the investigators will be investigated. because the deep state, last term for president trump, they were hiding in the shadows, but now they have a spotlight on them and they can all be investigated and the house needs to be cleaned out because now we know who most of them are, there is a record of it, and we can clean house next term and that's what has to happen. >> trump's announcement of bondi came just six hours after gaetz withdrew his name from consideration. trump transition officials say it was gaetz's call and we heard from gaetz himself just a short time ago, saying he will not rejoin congress in january. he also lodged some complaints about his failed attempt to become ag. >> they go and dredge up false years old allegations of the
10:03 am
most salacious and click bait-y flavor possible. if the things that the house ethics report were true, i would be under indictment and probably in a prison cell. but, of course, they're false. i could have answered all the questions. i could have engaged in a months long fact battle, but we don't have months to go through that. >> no matter why it happened, it marks a major defeat for the president-elect and win for senate republicans who stood up to him in what could be the first fight over his picks. rather than showcasing trump's absolute mour over his gop allies, it revealed his limits. i want to bring in ryan reilly. david aronberg, state attorney for palm beach county who knows,
10:04 am
and melanie saturday zenona, go all of you. donald trump went with gaetz because he wanted him to take a sledge hammer to the justice department. so, obvious question is, is that who pam bondi is? we just heard her saying they need to clean house. >> good to be with you. he was swinging for the fences when he kent with went with mat he went with someone who could. she's not a revolutionary. she will engage in political rhetoric, especially on fox news, but it is the pam bondi who i know who edited her comment halfway through by saying the bad prosecutors. i was concerned when matt gaetz was appointed. he would have torched the building. he would have gone after all of trump's enemies. pam bondi will engage in the same type of john durham-esque
10:05 am
investigations we saw under bill barr. but in the end, i don't think we have any real concern that adam schiff or anthony fauci will be perp walked in an orange jumpsuit. >> ryan, feel people in on more of pam bondi's background. >> i think, you know, in addition to being the impeachment lawyer, she has been this television presence to what you're saying at the top of the hour. she was a fox news guest host and makes a lot appearances as david just mentioned. i think one moment that sticks out for me is after donald trump lost the 2020 election, she held that presser in downtown philadelphia, being browned out by beyonce from protesters playing in the background and made false claims on television . she fell away from that in the leadup to the capitol attack, but the reason for the press conference at four seasons total
10:06 am
landscaping is because she had that first press conference in philadelphia and was he spreading flies. she claimed that donald trump had won pennsylvania, which he did not, he lost pennsylvania in 2020 and that led up to the january 6th attack on the capitol. gaetz was more in the middle, in the thick of that, direct relationships with january 6 rioters. but she is in that record altogether, though there is a big sigh of relief when you're comparing her to matt gaetz. >> what is the reaction to lawmakers in what has been a rapid turn of events? >> a huge sigh of relief from republicans as well. i think with matt gaetz dropping out, interest will be a reluctant to put up roadblocks. there are a lot of ways for
10:07 am
trump bondi. she doesn't have the baggage. i think it is worth noting here, three of the people part of donald trump's defense team during his first impeachment have now been named to significant cabinet and administration roles within donald trump's new administration. not just pam bondi, but elise stefanik and lee zeldin, both members of congress at the time and part of the crew defending chum during the first impeachment. i think now that matt gaetz is out of the way, it will put the spotlight on other nominees. rfk, his controversial extreme views on vaccines, pro abortion rights support, a problem with republicans, and tulsi gabbard who spewed talking points that were propaganda from the russian government. that spotlight will shift. they have done under the radar.
10:08 am
now on to the next controversial nominees. >> the ap reports and i want to talk a little bit more about pam bondi, accused of bribery years ago because of a campaign donation from donald trump. what can you tell us about that and do you think anything to melanie's point, anything that could be seriously problematic for her confirmation? >> i think she's going to glide through because she's the second choice and i think she is popular among republicans. matt gaetz was hated by republicans. tulsi gabbard was a democrat. their nominations are in peril. pam bondi will slide through. the check, i looked into that, when i spoke to her about it back in 013, she referred me to a "new york times" article and found that the check that trump sent her was written and signed days before the article came out
10:09 am
that informed there was a trump investigation going on. she released 800 pages of documents showing this was never discussed donald trump. the timing of the check doesn't look good. as far as if there is any evidence of quit pro quo conduct or bribery, there is none. >> did you get a sense this was a one-time show of opposition to a uniquely flawed candidate or does it tell us something more about the willingness to stand up to donald trump. >> i don't think it was trump's intent for this to be a strategic route to pam bondi. i think he wanted gets. pam bondi now looks like a very reasonable choice. she may have gotten more an
10:10 am
significance and more criticism. she's an actual lawyer. former prosecutor, been elected state wide. i think that at the end of the day, the matt gaetz nomination clears the way for a lot of republicans to say, okay, listen, we -- i think it now makes it easier for the other nominations. >> david, you also know, you know each other from florida, you heard what they had to say, they dredged up the salacious and click bait-y allegations. is he going to go away quietly or is he already look for his next gig? >> he's running for governor in 2026. >> you think so? >> oh, yeah. he's not going back to congress.
10:11 am
he could. he could go back to the next congress, but they would release the ethics report. he's going to run for governor and claim to be a martyr. the investigation of matt gaetz for child sex trafficking did not start under merrick garland it was ended and dropped under merrick garland. it was started by bill barr. there was evidence there, but in the end, the department of just found there was not enough evidence to take down a congressman. a congressman. they did not think that they were both credible enough to go after matt gaetz. doesn't mean he was cleared. doesn't mean he was conrated. they didn't have enough evidence to charge. >> let's talk about the other folks out there, i think that
10:12 am
the names that have been mentioned are the one, rfk, gabbard. i wonder what you're hearing on the ground, because of the most recent ref ligss against pete hegseth, he may be the one who is in the most trouble or what are you hearing generally? >> he is the most problematic at this point. he had some comments saying he doesn't support women in combat, that could be a problem with joni ernst, very supportive of women in contract and more generally. there are see serious and legitimate questions of whether he's qualified to lead an agency as large and complex as the pentagon. i do think kind of big picture here, the natural deference that republicans are going to want to
10:13 am
give trump, the natural posture is to defer to jump generally. they don't want to come out publicly. there is no reason to yet. but a lot of these conversations behind closed doors like pete hegseth, listen, everything is going to come out. you and your families are going to go through the wringer this is something you're willing to do, keep that in mind. it is going to ramp up the scrutiny on the nominees that are republican. >> three days ago, it was coming out from the transition team he was ing hard and then sent
10:14 am
his vice president. susie wild is someone seen as a little more moderate. she also, by the way, she has extensive toys in florida politics. how do you view this of the inner workings of the trump transition team and the administration? >> it is a huge relief for everybody involved except for maybe donald trump. easy wiles, i know her. i think that they all see the gaetz thing going down as a relief he was a pinata and get him out of the way, but he could have been confirmed and it could have been weeks and weeks of zrokss of getting the other tom nominees through.
10:15 am
this was a good development. >> ryan riley, dave aronberg, melanie zenona, thank you. the judge in donald trump's hush money case has officially canceled next week's sentencing date and opened the door to arguments whether the case should be dismissed outright. i want to bring in lisa rubin. explain the new order and what happens now. >> judge juan merchan suspending donald trump's sentencing, that was originally scheduled for next week on november 26th and instead scheduling briefing on a planned motion to dismiss by trump's lawyers. that is in lieu of perhaps substitute for this motion that they had already had to set aside the verdict after that trial. now they want to wipe the slate entirely clean and get rid of the indictment. that would mean setting aside the trial vert, but preventing the office from moving forward with any aspect of this case
10:16 am
whatsoever. we know the they wanted to put in their receipt on december 20th. he said no, he said december 2nd, the d.a.'s office opposes it by december 9th, no reply briefs. . juan merchan is getting himself ready to render a decision on that motion to dismiss. sometime before the holidays. his wording is very careful in this one page order with respect to the sentencing. he's saying it is adjourned to the extent that it had been scheduled for november 26th. what he's not saying is that the expensing is adjourned forever or indefinitely. >> he's given about ten days.
10:17 am
wouldn't you assume they were working on this. >> i would assume they were already working on this, particularly because they ceded some of the arguments in a series of letters. one letter too the d's office and another letter earlier this week to judge merchan. they have to put greater meet on those bones. to the extent that todd blanche and emil bove were hoping for a restful holiday, they're not going to get that. they're going to spend this holiday really fleshing out the constitutional arguments as to why it should be improper for donald trump to be sentenced in this case, this is already completed. >> is there any conflict of interest while he's been -- trump said he wants him at the number two? >> i don't think there is a conflict of interest right now. if this briefing is still going

donald trump's decision to replace matt gaetz with pam bondi for attorney general does fit a pattern. loyalists who make good tv. his new administration potentially packed with former tv personalities like pete hegseth and sean duffy and frequent guest elise stefanik, all familiar to fox news viewers. tv host dr. oz, tulsi gabbard and kristi noem. bondi herself was one of trump's most vociferous defendants during his first impeachment trial. >> we're here tonight because
