ukraine and the incoming trump administration. >> we will hear more from you later on, thank you. let's get to julie tsirkin who has reaction from the latest cabinet picks. i'm glad you are here at 30 rock in new york. what is the reaction of matt gaetz's withdrawal from consideration? >> it was widespread relief. we had been talking about this for eight days, that's how long the nomination was. we were talking about it during that period of time that senators on both sides of the aisle and namely republicans were in full freak out mode over the prospect of someone like matt gaetz who many served with in the house and they had personal bad blood with him, an an agency that once investigated him. when he withdrew his name, it was surprising to some senators. at least five of them, we have their names, including mitch mcconnell and a new senator, john curtis from utah who were hard noes on gaetz.
10:09 am
it became clear that even if he were to go through the gruelling confirmation process that his chances of getting confirmed were dead on arrival, even before the house ethics report had come out. now with the nomination or potential nomination of pam bondi, you are getting relief from senators. i'm talking about someone like lindsey graham who called the pick of bondi a slam dunk. democrats do question bondi as someone who will be a full loyalist to trump and not independently evaluate the cases as they come. take a listen to what alex padilla had to say earlier on nbc. >> to the transition team, next try. i think a lot of people are saying they put out matt gaetz in the beginning and how crazy that was and nonsensical to make pam bondi look normal. she may be confirmed. is she going to be an

independent attorney general upholding the constitution of the united states or is she planning to do trump's personal bidding? >> there are no indications that she is going to face an uphill battle for confirmation. senate republicans have a three seat majority plus and jd vance can break a tie after she gets out of the judiciary committee. so all in all, relief washing over them that trump picked bondi. we did see gaetz as an early test of how trump could see how far republicans are willing to go in his direction and that didn't work for him this time. >> we will see you next hour. if you want to come in during commercial break, love to see you, thanks. let's bring in peter baker, political analyst the white house correspondent for new york times sdw author of the divider, trump in the white house. that would be extended to you as well if you were in the studio. but anyway, let's look at all of the administration picks trump
10:11 am
announced yesterday. how should we read this friday night flurry? and which one of these late choices stands out to you as the most likely to cause concern from government officials? >> i would love to come by and see you too, alex. that would be great. >> it would be fun. >> yeah, this is a mix. it is a handful of people all at once. he has done it earlier. he has done this cabinet selection earlier than any president i can recall. one way he has done that is he knows people now and he was already president once. he has been thinking about this and he had in mind what he wanted. that is a big difference. presidents want to make sure they are not putting someone forward that will blow up in their face the way that gaetz did. trump doesn't care about vetting except for what he did.
10:12 am
we will see the senate's vetting and news media vetting and anything that is problematic. some of these are pretty maga folks. sebastion goshga will be the counterterrorism chief in the white house, not senate confirmable but pretty far right conservative that was out of the first white house trump had because he was so out there. and the treasury secretary has reassured wall street and trump values that, values making sure the big titans in new york are happy with his choice and they basically are because they see him among the options available here to be a pretty reassurable, steady as you go kind of figure. >> is anyone in the political world going to take issue with the fact that he worked with george soros? >> that is interesting. he is the far right and trump in familiar, they demonize him and
10:13 am
vilify him. that's what they did with alvin bragg because some organization that he contributed to contributed to bragg and suddenly that meant that soros was a hand picked prosecutor and that was silly. but in this case, trump plays by his own rules. what makes him disqualified if you are against him doesn't bother him if you are for him. so some people on the far right will note this but as long as trump is okay with this, that will keep it quiet. >> yeah. give me a sense of where pam bondi fits. is she just as concerning to folks inside of doj as matt gaetz was? i'm curious what the first order of business moit be. this is supposed to be a politically neutral position. >> well, look, i don't think anyone can concern people more than matt gaetz. he was so far out there in their
10:14 am
view that he was seen as a time bomb that would have gone off the minute he got in there. but bondi is a partisan, loyalist to trump. she may not be as flamboyant as matt gaetz but she holds some of the same views on the justice department and how it should be used. she was attorney general of florida. gates wr was not much of a lawyer. so she brings more legal experience to the table. i think she is not as likely to offend in the same way that matt gaetz was not only willing but eager to do. she will look at the justice department, very much of a trumpian point of view, viewing it as an department that needs to be deconstructed in a lot of ways and reformulated to be in trump's white house. >> i'm looking at your new article in which you call this election the land slide that wasn't. why are trump and his allies
10:15 am
exaggerating his narrow victory and what are we learning as the last votes are being tallied? >> let's remember the numbers. they are not 100% finished but as it looks right now, trump has just under 50%, 49.98% of the popular vote. now he wins the popular vote which he had not done the other two times and that is a big deal, something to brag about but it is not a majority. it is only around 1.6 percentage points over kamala harris. that is one of the smallest we have had since the 19th century. it is not a land slide by conventional measures by any stretch. he didn't have much of the coat tails. they gained four seats in the senate. that is a major victory. in the states where he ran the most, the five battleground states where they had senate races, he only brought in one republican and four democrats won. so his coat tails didn't bring in additional seats in the house. but the reason he wants to call
10:16 am
it a land slide is in order to, first of all his ego, everything with him is the biggest, the best, the first, the most, all of those things. he refuses to believe he is anything other than the greatest that ever lived but as a matter of political strategy, it is a way of maximizing the impact and influence. you are much likely to get your agenda through congress if you got a land slide than if you say i barely won but you should vote for my legislation. >> can i apply biggest and best to you my friend? see you again. what do you get when you have marjorie taylor greene and elon musk and vivek ramaswamy? america is about to find out. k ? america is about to find out than tylenol rapid release gels. ♪♪ also from advil, advil targeted relief, the only topical with 4 powerful pain fighting ingredients that start working on contact and lasts up to 8 hours.

10:32 am
picking who he likes at this point. he has done all of the big names, the ones he was really set on if you think of the early names that came out for the major cabinet positions. at this point, the roles that are left, fbi director in particular, something he cares about, treasury secretary came out and it took a while to get them. trump himself had not really liked the options put together by the transition team. he was casting around allies and advisors saying who else would be good. >> who are the advisors doing that? is trump doing the picking? he is picking people that he likes. >> at the end of the day, it's trump but it is canvising across the board. >> is it bannon, roger stone, others? >> there are different factions. i think there are three big factions. there is susie wiles and the new maga trump loyalists that were with him during the campaign who are one center of gravity.
10:33 am
there is the og trump loyalists from 2016 who are still around, people like boris epstein, miller is not coming in but he is oo sounding board for some people. there are the afpi folks, fringe, maybe not fringe but maga people who have influence in trump world. then you have the strap hangars, elon musk, howard lutnick with his crew. it is an amal guimations of different people. the transition team had put together a list of potential picks for trump and he didn't like them. what ended up happening is he confirmed boris epstein on a flight and decided with matt gaetz and let's see if it goes well and if it doesn't, we can pick someone else.
10:34 am
that's how trump is operating. >> what is the truth behind elon musk? what are you hearing? you have headlines like he's the guest that will never leave or conversely, right next to trump with everything. where is the truth? >> i think it is somewhere in the middle. he is not staying at mar-a-lago. he is staying off site according to our reporting. he is not always in trump's face. he is in big meetings and it is annoying some people in trump world who have been there and felt they have done their time and they have a seat at the table and they see musk and are like, what does he know about the maga agenda and the kind of people that we want to put in the government to dismantle the deep state. there is consternation there. on the other hand, there are people who have survived a long time in trump world who tell me they don't think elon is going so overboard as to annoy trump. that is one thing that trump dislikes, people who are pushing too hard. >> lutnick did that?
10:35 am
>> yes. he wanted to get treasury commerce and he was telling trump he needed to be at treasury even though trump told him he would probably not be there. didn't appreciate that. you have to play the game. and elon is good at playing internal politics which is a testament to why he is still there. >> sarah palin seems to be teasing a return to d.c., a cryptic instagram post there on november 24th. are you hearing her name in transition circles? >> no, but then again pam bondi's name for attorney general came out of nowhere. it was within hours of matt gaetz's nomination sipging that her name popped up in trump's inner circle. it has become very scattered at this point. there are a number of roles available. trump hasn't made up his mind. if he thinks there is a role that might work, he will. >> can i get you thoughts on this headline. trump won less than 50%, why is
10:36 am
everyone calling it a land slide? his transition claims that at every term it was a mandate? why are they calling it aland slide? i believe it is 1.6% of the popular vote he stands ahead of kamala harris, that's it. >> it is several things. number one that going into the election, trump world had no expectation of winning the popular vote and neither did democrats. they thought it would be an electoral college vict tory and they would win swing states and if they could get pennsylvania, they could get the electoral college. so when he won the popular vote, people's minds in trump world exploded. they didn't realize they were close to doing that. so you have low expectations and then a massive fantasy that they have a colossal mandate. and it is not clear that voters feel that. they are voting on single issues

the process. joining me now is david aaronburg, and democratic former member of the florida state senate. welcome dave. what is your reaction to this reporting and especially going back and trying to prove the big lie about the 2020 election and then the response of the trump camp to this report? >> good to be back with you. this is obviously troubling. this is not why people voted trump in, it was to reduce high prices, it was to close the border. it was not to weaponize the department of justice. he ran against the weaponization of the department of justice but as everything it is always a projection or admission with these guys. i do take solace knowing that pam bondi will be the attorney general and not matt gaetz. had matt gaetz been confirmed, i think we he would have torn the place down, gone after trump's enemies regardless of evidence. pam bondi, i know her and show believes in the rule of law.

>> give me a sense of that because when she was florida ag, she made you drug czar and you were focused on the opioid epidemic. give me a sense of what she is like, the kind of loyalty she has for trump, and will that extend to going after political enemies as he wishes? remember, he's the one who is putting her up for the post. so she has to have a certain level of loyalty to get that post. >> she is loyal to trump, it is a real loyalty and love for trump unlike lindsey graham who pretends to love him and then makes fun of him behind his back. bondi is likable and gets along with friends on both sides of the aisle. i ran against her for attorney general, well, i lost in the democratic primary. but after she won the general election, the fact that i endorsed her opponent, the

democrat that beaten me, she named me her drug czar because she knew that i was going to tackle the opioid crisis if i were elected attorney general and she wanted me on her team, despite the fact that republicans were going after her on that. that says a lot about her. i expect her to launch the john durham style investigations that will hopefully go nowhere because that's what happened with john durham. if they go after adam schiff or liz cheney, it will backfire fwens them and it will create martyrs of them both, making them both instant presidential candidates. look what it did for donald trump, sitting in a courtroom in new york. they don't want to go down that road themselves. >> so representative jamie rascens spoke of his concern with pam bondi. take a listen to this. >> she will be the key transmission belt between donald trump's orders and then making the bureaucracy move.

that of course is what everyone at the department of justice is so afraid of, that there will be a whole sale abandonment of the law and constitution and it will basically become like the donald trump lawfirm. is the institution of the doj strong enough to resist attempts to weaponize it? >> i think so. you have career prosecutors who will follow the evidence and the law. john durham did some of this stuff. he was able to file low-level charges against mid to low-level officials and it blew up in his face. he was humiliated. i think they have enough career prosecutors who will do things based on the evidence and law. there will be investigations. i'm not as pessimistic as congressman rascens that they will burn the whole place down. i know pam bondi. i think she is still tethered to the rule of law. she will be directed to do things that a lot of us don't

from a wet and very windy london, alex. according to our nbc colleagues on the ground in beirut, this was one of, if not the most powerful strike on central beirut since israel launched its invasion of lebanon back in september. anybody living within a mile of the strike area felt like there was an earthquake in the middle of the night. so we have been, obviously, used to these strikes in the southern suburbs of beirut, in one area, specifically, known to be an hezbollah stronghold but this is the four-time this week that israel it the central area of the capital, it is densely populated, normally very popular with antique shops and, as you said, 20 dead, 63 people injured and critically, this happened at 4:00 in the morning
