someone wanted her killed. her job was to see an undercover agent on a mission. >> he was a master actor and obviously must have nerves of steel. >> to protect her, he would have to infiltrate the world right out of miami vice. plain graphs, drug runs, hidden tapes. could he lure the suspect from the shadows, this man with murder on his mind? >> it must've taken a lot of bravery. >> that you take on the role of his life? >> he is a man who once somebody killed.
10:02 pm
>> hello and welcome to dateline. power, greed and jealousy can be a toxic combination. it led one man down a dark path setting off a dramatic undercover operation of the bizarre twist at the heart of it all? the woman whose life was at stake had no idea she was in danger. here's keith morrison with recipe for murder. >> it was the cake that should've told them something, the killer cake, the cake to die for. it was supposed to be the jewel in the crown of the gourmet deli, a deli which more than a few regular customers -ranked right up there at the top, and just a two-minute drive across the bridge from palm beach, florida with its five-star hotels, balmy perfect beaches, pricey houses and billionaires
10:03 pm
who wanted only the best. >> we were doing about $3 million a year in business for 150-seat deli, that's an incredible amount. we would have waiting lines 2 hours long for people coming in. >> it used to be the 3g's deli. that is one its reputation was born but the brothers who owned the place had developed some other restaurants, too, and in the mid-80s they were feeling a little overextended and then one day they met a 32-year-old entrepreneur named glenn sandler. >> out on the golf course he just said he was looking to get into business and i said why don't you buy my restaurant. >> what was he doing before? >> playing golf every day. he was retired. he had a few different businesses. i think one was a no name or no-add company that
10:04 pm
he had different products and i think he sold that. i think he did videos or some other stuff. >> he made a lot of money? >> he made a ton of money. >> so, sandler bought the restaurant but expectations for his tenure, were, to put it mildly, low. >> at the time i thought you know he's going to try to do it for a little while and get done with it and be done with it. >> but glenn surprised everyone. >> from the day he bought that restaurant he was there every single day from open to close. he was passionate about learning how to be the best deli guy there could be. he worked alongside deli guys. he looked -- worked alongside
10:05 pm
the guys in the kitchen. he worked alongside the porters. he was determined to learn every aspect of the business. there was no doubt he was a workaholic. >> sandler probably did not have to work so hard. he was raised in the boston suburbs and his dad was a very successful businessman. after college in miami he proved he had some talent of his own for making man. he seemed to be lucky, too, in business and in life. in 1981 he married a beautiful young miami woman named betty schuessler. >> pretty looked like the old barbie benton, the playmate. she was outgoing, fun. she was a very pretty woman. very beautiful lady. >> and soon enough, a mother who had two sons. >> she was a good wife and an outstanding mother. i know she was heavily involved with the pta you know, with the kids' school. she was into her children. >> after the samplers but the deli its former owners got to know the both of them. andy garnett and his wife went on a crews with the settlers. >> we went down to the islands, had a great time. they got along great. we had a little house down in the keys.
10:06 pm
i wrote down with him and spend a few days out on his boat fishing. not that i am that much of a fisherman. he wasn't flashy or anything, just a real nice guy. >> so, it was a charmed life, apparently. this was his neighborhood, a place called the aero club. businessman john herring was one of glenn sandler's neighbors. >> bring cars in the front of the garage and take your plane out the back of the garage. taxi down taxiways to the runway and you take off. >> sandler was so far -- proud of his airplane. like an airborne sports car people would say. >> he was particular to detail and took great care of his airplane. >> a beautiful wife, a great house, and airplane in the garage. it suited glenn sandler perfectly. >> glenn loves to fly and betty
10:07 pm
was always with him. she always said i think glenn was a good husband. >> but of course, nobody is perfect. everybody has flaws. every marriage, too, and even this neighbor found himself wondering if sandler was a little too determined to get his way. >> i think glenn is a control guy and he was going to control everything that was happening. >> it was a competitive thing. he had to win, just had to. after he bought the deli -- >> you would pay for golf, buy drinks, give you the shirt off his back. when it came to business, cutthroat. >> you cannot lose? >> absolutely not. he said anything. >> like for example, the cake. not just any cake but a chocolate cake so good, so creamy, so tempting it was known as the killer cake.
10:08 pm
>> people would actually come from all over to buy this ll >> when sandler but the deli the recipe for the killer cake came with it, but -- >> this was one recipe that glenn just could not get right. he hired a baker to come and read the recipe and just couldn't get it right. >> he believed i was out to sabotage him by not giving him the right recipe to the cake and from that day, our relationship went down. >> he felt that he lost because he could not get the cake recipe right. >> and so, given the untimely falling out, the garnet brothers did not see sandler or his wife, betty, very much anymore. the savvy businessman would not accept defeat and it seemed it did not matter what it cost him. was that why the marriage ground him? why in a new millennium, life
10:09 pm
with sandler became intolerable for betty? in 2004 after more than 20 years of marriage but he had had enough. she asked for a divorce and sandler felt blindsided emotionally and financially. if any contest had to be won, then this was it. sandler's manager at the gourmet deli heard a running commentary on the bitter divorce battle from his boss. >> if he had it his way she was not getting a penny. >> she kept wanting more. is that something he talked about? >> yes, basically feeling like she was just a greedy you know what. >> and, he saw sandler change. first, there was the nose job then he started showing up with women, quite a few of them. >> he would bring a girl in and tell me look at this you know, new girlfriend of mine. >> did he seem to change after that divorce happened? >> absolutely. >> did his personality change?
10:10 pm
>> absolutely. she wanted the divorce and he didn't so he was very unhappy. you can't leave me. if i want to leave you i will leave you but you're not leaving me. that would mean i lost. >> but glenn sandler was a man who could not lose but now he took steps that would make a win absolutely certain. >> sandler approached him and asked if he knew anyone that could kill his wife. >> coming up, kill his wife? was glenn sandler serious? you bet he was, and so was the fbi. an undercover operation begins when dateline continues. when dateline continues. hashtag still not coughing?! mucinex dm gives you 12 hours of relief from chest congestion and any type of cough, day or night. mucinex dm. it's comeback season. why just give a gift, when you can give a gift with meaning? shutterfly, make something that means something. enjoy 40% off your order with code gifts40. order now for holiday delivery. when you sleep more deeply, you wake up more energized. introducing purple's new mattresses.

>> glenn sandler, the wealthy investor and restaurant to her, was a high flyer around palm beach, florida and even if he did not quite master the killer cake, his deli, his whole existence, looked like a huge success except there was this one quirk. sandler said one of his friends and colleagues, could not stand losing. anything. on the golf course if he had a bad shot it was kind of like [ inaudible ] >> and, sandler was not a man to cross. in my rate deli employee found that out when he asked for what sandler thought was an undeserved race. >> just took an ashtray and slammed it on the desk and broken ashtray and on another occasion he would just snap a pencil. he never hit anybody, never ask
10:15 pm
-- grabbed anybody by the shirt collar and through the mount but these were intimidation things he would do. >> there was another time he pulled out a gun in a confrontation with an employee. >> he didn't pull the trigger or anything so i think he did it as a scare tactic. >> in july, 20 04 betty, his wife, threw him out, demanded a divorce and glenn found himself competing with her over who got what. deirdra funcheon was a reporter for the broward palm beach new times. >> at one point, he offered her more than $2 million and she said that's not enough, that's not enough. i want more. that's not enough and this bugged him to no end. >> you don't cross him, you don't try to take advantage of him. >> and you don't leave him. around the gourmet deli, sandler's employees watched his once busy and ordered life start to unravel. >> he was there at 8:00 sharp every monday for year after
10:16 pm
year, then all of a sudden it got to be where he was showing up at like 8:00 in the evening. >> then about a year into this downward spiral, it was the fall of 2005, sandler made a secret friend, a drug dealer named chris robinson. >> chris robinson became glenn sandler's crack dealer. >> cocaine, tawdry motel rooms, prostitutes all but -- supplied by the smalltime dealer in pembina was not long before this man turned to robinson for help with his domestic troubles as well. >> glenn sandler after he had known chris for a while, ask chris if he could throw a birthday party for his wife. that's the terminology he used, throw birthday party. >> is there any doubt about what that meant? >> it became clear that he wanted his wife killed and
10:17 pm
chris robinson said he and his brothers could get it done. >> what would they do? >> they hatched a plan that chris and his brothers would take two stolen cars, and they would ram into betty at an intersection and flee. >> how do you know you're going to kill her that way? >> i don't know, but that is the plan. glenn gave chris a $5000 deposit to enact it. >> and it was like the killer cake recipe. it just did not come together. >> no one will ever know whether chris robinson really would've carried out that plan because before he could actually carry it out, he got arrested on a drug charge, unrelated. >> and, sent off to jail? >> sent off to jail and i guess he realized he had a bargaining chip and he summoned the
10:18 pm
detective and said hey, you know, i got some news for you. there is a guy out there trying to have his wife whacked. >> the cop was palm beach detective jason l'etoile. >> i got there and soon realized this was some good information we needed to act upon. >> and, quickly, because drug dealer robinson revealed that sandler had been shopping around, that he had already been jolted by yet another hitman named meets. >> meets with some kind of biker who was part of the cycle gang and apparently when sandler asked this guy if he would kill betty. he gave meets a $5000 deposit. but then nothing ever happened. >> but, was sandler still looking for a hitman? maybe the cops could replace chris robinson with their own fake hitman like for example, this man, an undercover agent. we agreed to conceal his identity. the agent called glenn sandler on the phone. the name he gave himself was fred. his supposed role, drug dealer
10:19 pm
chris robinson's fed up, streetwise boss. right here began a precarious dance between the fbi agent and the man who always like to call the shots, a man who did not know that this time the shots were being called on him. assuming that in the stands, that would be hitman could win sandler's trust. how do you go about making that happen? >> there is things about someone you can talk about open conversation why's that makes you agreeable and understanding you can talk. . >> as fred, the agent arranged a face-to-face meeting. >> i met mr. sandler in the
10:20 pm
parking lot a day or two later. >> this is where he would begin fishing for the job sandler had offered the now-jailed drug dealer. then, sandler told fred he had also become fed up with drug dealer robinson. fred dismissed robinson's plan to kill betty with a car as laughable. >> this guy wants are done he's can have her bed ridden with a back problem. you t-bone her and she ain't done. >> fred proposed a different plan, at a new price. 20,000, less the 5000 chris robinson had already taken. fred told sandler that his own recipe for murder had one key ingredient. .
10:21 pm
>> so, you told him quite specifically in chilling details , what you would do to make sure she disappeared forever. >> only i would know where she is buried and she would be buried with lime and all of that. >> friends asked -- i'm sitting in a position i want to make sure that somebody else hasn't had time to talk to him.
10:22 pm
>> the undercover agent thinks he can play glenn sandler but turns out there is more to this would be wife killer than he realizes. coming up, was murder the only crime on glenn sandler's mind? >> i was there for one criminal activity and all of a sudden a second criminal activity really popped its head up. >> here is a man that once somebody killed. maybe he wants you killed, too. >> when dateline continues. ont try this robitussin honey. the real honey you love, plus the powerful cough relief you need. mind if i root through your trash? robitussin, with real honey & elderberry.

connect to the world of wicked this holiday, in theaters now. >> glenn sandler hated losing, hated it so much he had already given amend $5000 to kill the wife who had rejected him and was demanding millions of his
10:26 pm
money but he had no idea that the man now offering to do the job was an undercover agent from the fbi, angling to get the contract on sandler's wife. the angry husband and the phony hitman headed off with sandler often venting to his buddy about his trouble. >> was it hate or just greed? >> probably both at some point but he was losing his airplane, he believed. he was losing his home, his business and he was concerned that the money he was paying her was never going to be enough. >> sandler also told fred that his wife, betty, could reveal some very compromising information. >> he was concerned about her blackmailing him over some other illegal activities. >> like what? >> i did not know at the time. >> quickly, fred became the only one who could know the depths of sandler's desperation.
10:27 pm
>> i think that fred really tapped into glenn sandler's vulnerabilities there because as his former employees will attest, he did not have any friends. well, here comes fred who seems like a cool guy, calling him brother, and i think that glenn sandler felt that you know, he had finally met someone he could relate to. >> it was a precarious balancing act. fred quickly set up a plan telling sandler he needed to do surveillance on betty. sandler supply details of their aero club life, even maps showing his home's location. >> i needed some things to really understand what her daily pattern was, where she shops, where she goes to the gym. there had to be some legwork
10:28 pm
done. >> what sandler did not know is that fred had helpers, fellow detectives like jason l'etoile. >> we started a tagteam to do surveillance and determined that whatever information we couldn't provide that to the undercover officer such that he could go back to mr. sandler and make it seem like she goes here last week she was here kind of thing. >> there was a dog or two that were involved. it seemed like dog was always with her so i made mention of that. it seems like enough for him to understand that things were going in the direction he wanted it to go to and he was excited about that. >> several weeks went by and fred knew sandler had come to trust he was the man for the job. >> he became very comfortable. i could tell he was accepting what was being said to him. he was very satisfied and i can tell i was being hired. >> what about betty? surely she should know her husband was cutting up more
10:29 pm
than just pastrami sandwiches. >> did you also go up to her and say look, i hate to tell you this but your ex-husband wants to tell you and i'm a cup. >> not at that time. >> why not? >> detective l'etoile and i sat and talked about that we have no idea what they are involved in when he kept making statements about she'll give me up to the police or she will testify against me. we didn't know what that was and if it was something that was going to be bigger than what she was involved in, she could go back and tell him. >> you did not know for sure whether she was an innocent bystander or that she may be involved in something. there was another reason that play along with sandler. detectives wanted to see where it went. in one of their parking lot meetings, fred had schmoozed about the drug business, letting sandler think he not only sold drugs that transported them, too, by airplane. what he did not expect to hear was sandler supply. he volunteered to fly the drugs himself and his own plane from
10:30 pm
this airport. >> this may be your past but i'm your future. if you ever know my history you and i would be bros. >> was the capacity of your plane? my capacity? 200 pounds. >> then, another surprise. sandler seemed to have done this before. he boasted about his smuggling back in those seductive miami vice days. only then, a speedboat was his transport of choice. >> was it true? as if to establish his credibility as a criminal, sandler claimed he had once been charged with cocaine trafficking then bought his way out of trouble.
10:31 pm
was sandler still in the game? was this some unknown drug ring? no, fred had to improvise, had to play not only hitman but drug smuggler. the case is becoming more complex than anyone imagined. >> i was there for one criminal activity and all of a sudden, the second criminal activity popped its head up. my sitting with a major smuggler? >> not to keep his credibility and probe sandler's possible connection with the drug business, fred would have to stage something that looked like a real drug run. >> probably two or three times he asked me for crack cocaine. i had to tell him it was in available. i told him i would receive it
10:32 pm
from someone in georgia and meet them halfway and pick it up and if they saw me arrive in this aircraft they would give me a lot more. >> so, he agreed to fly you in his airplane to a meeting place to get cocaine? >> yes. >> so, the hit on betty was delayed while fred organized a drug run from sebring to palm beach, the whole thing a sham, only sandler had no idea he was being played. what was real is the fact that in that little airplane, fred's life would be in the hands of pilot glenn sandler, a desperate man perhaps capable of anything. were you concerned about your own safety? here's a man who once somebody killed. maybe he wants you killed? >> i'm always concerned about my safety. >> coming up, fred climbs aboard and the risks are sky high. you have five kilos of cocaine in your airplane on the guy you think is a bad guy. >> when dateline continues.

i am richard lui with the news update, president biden announcing sunday he is pardoning his son, hunter. hunter was convicted on federal gun charges and pleaded guilty to federal tax evasion charges. he faced sentencing later this month. this move was a reversal from the president, who repeatedly maintained he would not pardon his son. in a statement, biden said politics infected the process and led to a miscarriage of justice and helps americans understand his decision. for now, back to dateline. rsta. for now, back to dateline. >> welcome back to dateline. i am craig melvin. glenn sandler was the focus of an fbi murder for hire sting when he revealed he was also a drug smuggler. fred, the undercover agent, quickly set up a fake drug run to catch the amateur pilot in action. now, fred was about to board glenn's plane, and trusting his life to a potential killer.
10:37 pm
back to keith morrison with recipe for murder. >> who, among the loyal patrons of the gourmet deli, would have believed it? the president of florida's exclusive aero club community could even imagine that one of their own had put out a contract with a hitman to kill his wife. he now was ready to use his own plane to run cocaine. >> it seems to me like he had just come out of a period of really stable, possibly a boring stage of his life where he had been married to the same woman for years and years, doing the same business for years and years, and maybe missed his miami vice type of days. >> and now he was getting to live them all over again. >> yes. >> assuming, that is, that the fbi man who called himself fred, did not blow his cover.
10:38 pm
>> your face shows what's going on in your soul and you have to be careful. >> partly because now, the undercover team had expanded, along with the risk. >> at the sebring airport we had agents. i went to sebring airport. >> they took off from the sebring airport. the undercover agent still posing as fred, in the seat beside him. as the little plane soared into the air, sandler was enthusiastic. fred remained cautious. after all, he could not know if sandler had bought his act, or seen through it. after all, a plane ride would be just the place to shoot fred and have his body disappear into the ocean. >> any time you're undercover it's a danger. when i flew up to sebring with him and his aircraft i was by
10:39 pm
myself and of course, concerned. >> once in sebring, they met the supplier, t-bone. he was actually another federal agent. over coffee, fred put everyone at ease. then, on cue, t-bone excused himself, went to the bathroom. >> he left a bag between sandler and i. i opened it up to see how much was in it. he looked over and saw the five kilos. came back and said oh good, it's five kilos. i said i was a little excited that it was five. he said i wouldn't care if it was 15. he was comfortable. >> the plan was to fly the goods back to west palm beach airport. fred said t-bone needed to accompany his cargo. to make things look real, fred told sandler he wanted to have a little fun with t-bone, who he said was afraid of small planes. in fact, t-bone's fear of flying was also a cover.
10:40 pm
t-bone was himself a pilot. >> sandler did not know that. >> no. >> as insurance, fred made sure t-bone set up front next to glenn sandler, still in that little plane. sandler was the one in control. in control of several kilos of coke and two undercover fbi agents. >> i studied the aircraft. i knew where the turnoff key was. of course he was better than i was, so the second person i brought in could handle himself, could handle the aircraft. >> but you have five kilos of cocaine in your airplane and the guy you thought was a bad guy with you. but, the aircraft landed safely in north palm beach. >> my guys would be there and the guy from georgia would be out there and i would meet him later at the house.
10:41 pm
>> then, fred proposed to sandler that he abandoned his plan to kill his wife. why? for one thing, fred did not want some defense attorney later on to claim that he had encouraged sandler to commit murder and for another, it seemed to him that sandler still had real feelings for betty. >> he also seemed to have something of a jealous streak. glenn had heard she had been out of the bar in town. sort of advertising her nearly single status, yeah. >> so, fred suggested, why not use his beloved airplane to run enough drugs to allow him to pay off betty instead of killing her? but, sandler was not buying it. he wanted her dead.
10:42 pm
>> what was sandler's big secret, the one he could not afford to have betty reveal? >> it was a tax issue from a business they had together. it was a cash-type business and he was concerned she was going to be able to testify to large amounts of income they were not paying tax on. >> was that a reason to kill? still, fred held off, giving sandler every possible chance to change his mind or reveal some darker source for his murderous intent. >> i would want to make sure that was what he wanted to do, that there was not some co- conspirator. was there a girlfriend on the outside that
10:43 pm
