tv   Inside With Jen Psaki  MSNBC  December 9, 2024 5:00pm-6:00pm PST

5:00 pm
questionable judgment. meetings with assad and traffics in conspiracy theories, 2020 election or bio- weapon lab in syria. foolish enough to believe these theories or she actively traffics and propagates false information. you don't want a person like that at the helm of intelligence community. therefore i know there is a lot of angst if this is the person who is going to be their leader so it raises, i think, serious questions that i am hoping the senate will do their job and expose the lack of credentials, experience and good judgment we need in the spot. >> we like to say scaring is caring. it is strange and frightening times. thank you both very much that is tonight's reid out.
5:01 pm
inside with jen psaki starts right now. okay. so, i am going to start tonight with something that really jumped out at me from donald trump's interview with nbc's kristen welker. especially the way it has been interpreted by some. the way he talked about retribution. >> you campaigned on destroying the deep state, do you want kash patel to cast investigations on the people on the list. >> are you going to direct him to do it? >> no, not at all >> are you going to go after joe biden? >> i am really looking to make our country successful, not looking to go back into the past. looking to make the country successful. retribution will be through success. >> pam bondi talks about investigating investigators. >> i want her to do what she wants to do >> i want her to do whatever she has to do snow are you
5:02 pm
going to directly? >> no, i am not. she is a smart person. she was a great attorney general in florida. very experienced. i want her to do what she wants to do i will not instruct her to do anything. >> i want her to do whatever she wants to do. now, some people are listening to that and even suggesting and i mean out loud on television that trump has changed. he did not say he was going to direct anyone. his tone is different. he is a new man. retribution through success, no, that does not sound so bad. before you jump to what i would consider an inaccurate conclusion, i would invite you to keep watching the interview. in the same interview he also said this. >> cheney was behind it. so was bennie thompson and everybody on that committee -- for what they did, honestly, they should go to jail. >> so you think liz cheney should go to jail? >> for what >> everyone on the commit sny. >> i think everyone. >> anybody who voted.
5:03 pm
>> are you going to direct your fbi director or attorney general to send them to jail? >> no, not at all. they will have to look at that. i am going to focus on drill, baby, drill. okay. >> so he wants liz chainy and members of the january 6th -- cheney and members of the january 6th commit tow go to jail but not direct them to do anything. now, the idea that trump would need to direct loyalists like kash patel or pam bondi to do that is laughable. there was never a formal sit down or a paper trail where he tells them in a memo in large bold print from the white house, go investigate my enemies. here is an attached list. signed, donald trump. but that does not mean he is not giving them directions. he is. including in that interview.
5:04 pm
pretty directly. the list liz cheney should be in jail. he attempted to give himself plausible deniability? i suppose. of course not. how do you think they are going to hear what he said in the interview? they already know what he wants. have known that for a long time. >> i will appoint a real special prosecutor to go after the most corrupt president in the history of the united states of america. joe biden. >> she should be impeached and prosecuted for her actions >> would it be terrible to throw the president's wife and the former secretary of state -- think of it, the former secretary of state. but the president's wife into jail? it is very possible it is going to have to have to happen to them. >> she should be prosecuted. nancy pelosi should be prosecuted. >> the judge and the ag should be arrested and punished accordingly >> they should be prosecuted for what they did. >> the reporter does not want
5:05 pm
to tell you it is bye-bye. the reporter goes to jail. these people should be put in jail the way they talk about our judges and justice system. >> the prosecutor should be prosecuted. >> kash patel and pam bondi know the assignment, they have their marching orders, there is a reason he picked both of them for these jobs. he played sure to hand pick these people who are ready and willing to carry the assignment out. a comment here and there. saying it many times very publicly. he did that also in the "meet the press" interview and he has been doing it for years. look, i hope that trump decides not to go after his political enemies. i hope the loyalists in these top law enforcement jobs decide not to go after them, either. we should all hope that. that would be way better for the country.
5:06 pm
it is also important to be realistic in moments like this. to not put our heads in the sand here. trump told us what he plans to do, many, plane times, listen carefully, closely. he just told us again in the interview what he wants to do the tone might be different but the message was very, very clear. joining me now, the former u.s. attorney for the southern district of new york who was fired by trump back in 2017. okay. so, i just gave me take on if trump changed his plans for political retribution. again, i hope he has. when you listen to that interview and the clips i played and any other parts you listened to yesterday, knowing what you know, what do you think? >> i think you have it pretty much correct. look, you don't know because the future is the future and people change their minds and something may happen on a different time line but if you
5:07 pm
take it, lawyers like to say. totality of the circumstances you have a person who talked about retribution day after day, week after week month after month. themselves have taken a page from trump's book and they want to jail and prosecute people including, by the way, his first attorney general nominee who fell gaetz and pam bondi and join that with the fbi director nominee, not only saying things about prosecuting and holding. but has an appendix to his book that reads like an enemy's list. i join with the hope that he will not go after political rivals just doing their jobs if
5:08 pm
they were judges, prosecutors, if they were members of congress. all of whom, by the way, enjoy some form of the immunity that trump has been seeking for years because they are just doing their jobs. i hope that is true. but for once, as they say. we will see what happens. all of the evidence points to the fact that donald trump does not have to instruct his people. he effectively instructed them by being on that television program on your network. and saying this is what he wants with respect to the january 6th committee. i don't hold out a lot of hope but a little bit. >> these -- the reason for these remarks it is important not to get numb to what he is saying that is why i want to talk about it. i want to ask you about kind of, if you want to move forward with this or if his team as you noted want to know the directions are want to move
5:09 pm
forward with it, justice department wanted to put someone like liz cheney in jail or at least make their lives difficult, how would they do it? what would their approach be? >> reporter: so, you know t is lard to know because as i said most people that trump and others are talking about were people engaging in conduct in connection to their official duties, right? prosecutors bring cases, members of congress conduct hearings and pass legislation, judges decide cases. all opinion normal duties and obligations and in the perimeter of their jobs. it usually is off limits. for even a civil suit much less criminal prosecution. what i worry about is not so much at the end of the day that someone will be convicted and sent to prison on trumped up charges or false pretenses but
5:10 pm
for the very act of making the inquiry, right, a very easy thing to do. at the end of the day to send someone to and get them convicted you have to prove your case beyond a reasonable doubt. to open up an investigation and to begin, you know, a process that puts people under the gun that costs them a lot of money. sometimes their life-savings it is a lower standard. and, you can plj that if they were going to do there and i join you in your hope that they are not as political retribution, they will find a way to say maybe they destroyed evidence. they are saying the commity -- i don't know evidence of that, committee, or that there was a misstatement made in connection to a hearing. or, there was something the way people went about it. after two or three years it gets thrown out or defeated in court, in the meantime, people had their reputations ruined
5:11 pm
and people had their bank accounts emptied. that is my worry here. i talked about it, by the way, actual people and i know folks who are representing actual people who have been in government and are on this list in the cross hairs of people like trump and the folks he plans to bring into government. they are not, they are not people who runaround with their hair on fire. they are reasonable people and they are worried about this. >> for good reason. and as much as i think we are hopeful, it is important not to be naive, i don't think we are. but today, calling for fbi director wray to step aside. he has three more years in the term, a reason to have 10 year term to cross over different parties and administrations. he wrote for the good of the country it is time for you and your deputy to move on to the next chapters of your lives and vote no confidence in your
5:12 pm
continued leadership. he was a trump employee. you experienced not exactly this but a version of this. what do you think that christopher wray do? resign or make trump fire him, i suppose? >> well, i am partial to having the record be clear and if you have a term for a number of years if you are chris wray and appointed by the guy coming back in office and you shook his hand and said i want you to be director for 10 years and you believe as the record reflects you have not done anything improper, you have not laid down on the job, why should you leave? the person who wanted you to stay for some reason, it is his right to fire chris wray not disputing that. but if the point is that you want to remove an fire director
5:13 pm
to put in another fbi director less qualified, who has, less of disposition to be fbi director and go after your political enemies, then i think the record is better for history to demand to be fired rather than resign in advance. >> we are going to have to come back to talk about kash patel. there is a lot to unpack there. thank you very much for joining me tonight. if you are looking at senate republicans to be part of trump's picks for top jobs i would not be holding my breath too long. we could be hopeful but ply panel of political insiders is standing by to talk about what we saw and heard on capitol hill today. a lot of nominees were there. we are back in just 60 seconds s . but here i am... ...being me. keep being you... ...and ask your healthcare provider about the number one prescribed h-i-v treatment, biktarvy. biktarvy is a complete,

controversial picks for top jobs were on capitol hill today. tulsi gabbard, hegseth. gabbard faces criticism, for good reason. for propaganda she talked about that is spread by russia and by assad's toppled regime. and ranging from sexual assault to drinking issues to the mismanagement of nonprofits. all which he denies. a record for all of it. kash patel built a career around deep state long tried to overthrow trump. now, patel said he would like to close down the fbi headquarters and reopen it as a museum of the deep staff does not matter what party you are from. after he met with senator ernst today she shared a post on twitter, take a listen to how

senator reacted to one of his goals for the f.b.i. >> are you concerned at all about some of the thing that kash patel wants to do. close the fbi headquarters, fire a number of agents? >> i interpret it as high hyperbole. of all of the nominees, why? why is he gets the benefit the doubt from all of them? hopefully this group of people that know about all of these things know more. joining me now former senior advisory speakers paul ryan, and reporter for politico. okay, danielle, you have been running around on the hill doing a bunch of reporting. i say often when you sigh publicly is not the full story
5:17 pm
privately what is going on with kash patel are you hearing different tunes privately or is that what they are telling. >> it seems he is resinating with the republican senators. it happened wray of course, he is everybody ising 10 year role and he would have to resign or trump fire him for patel to replace him. but it seems that he is really resinating with the senators that need to support him to be confirmed. we are seeing that with not only patel but pam bondi. it is interesting to see how after what happened with matt gaetz the senators are coming around. you and i discussed matt gaetz was a personal thing this seems to be different in these discussions and they are going well. >> okay, okay, i really, a lot of nominees no one is talking about that will get confirmed. rubio, others will just get confirmed they are not controversial on the hill in that way.
5:18 pm
i don't really understand the kash patel quiet. he has an enemies list in his book. why is this the reaction? >> i think you have to take yourself into the life of a republican senator. when you go home to your state you are hearing this stuff from your people all of the time about the deep state and the fbi and how they are out to get donald trump. what patel said is mainstream for a lot of republican voters so there would be a penalty to say that is disqualifying. you are saying your voters have disqualifying views, there is still a lot to come out on kash patel and the way he cared himself around since he was in the administration last time. and as a political actor. what blow back am i willing to take. willing to take blow back for matt gaetz because i hate him frankly but not the same blow back for someone like this. >> some of it is picking and choosing maybe? >> what do you think? >> yeah. the other thing about being a
5:19 pm
republican senator right now if you, if you are in this situation where trump just won with what you consider a mandate, certainly from your voters. he is coming in. you probably look at the slate of people he nominated and think i can oppose one, maybe two, i can not pick fights over five or six of them. i will have to choose who i am willing to go up against, you know, by all accounts a few of handful went privately to the white house and conveyed, gaetz does not have the votes. you know, tulsi gabbard might have more of an uphill battle here given what she said about russia and syria. you know, these are foreign policies, but i, i think that you are right if you are a republican senator your base does not think that patel is beyond the pail. some of these guys might go to the white house similarly behind closed doors but a lot
5:20 pm
of viewers are hoping for a -- an experience but it will not happen. it is going to happen behind the scenes in there is any opposition to these candidates. >> i guess i am surprised there is not this behind the scenes opposition to kash patel. different from gaetz. let me ask you about pete hegseth. the end of last week i thought, and i think a lot of people were speculating he did not have much longer, other names floated out there. now you have ernst that made a statement that raised eye brows say today, as i support pete through this process i look forward to a fair hearing based on truth not anonymous sources. which seems to be a shift of tone to me. what are you hearing about hegseth and his path? is he in it for awhile or at
5:21 pm
risk? >> he is in it for awhile. this confirmation from ernst changed what people were thinking. he has a concerning past that reporters are peppering him with questions on. it was a huge switch to have erns, it is a she would support him. to be clear through the process. not say for the position but it was a vote of confidence to have that statement come out from ernst who say veteran, survivor of sexual assault. >> someone who was on the list for potential alternative, an interesting dynamic. so, as you know well, as you all know well, many stages in the process, right? if somebody drops out before a hearing that is significant. it does happen. it seems like a number of these people are going to go to hearings. do you think there is any chance -- you said there is more to come out from patel. gabbard will have to talk about
5:22 pm
her trip to syria. could it sway senators or not hold our breath? >> it may. earnst there are people trying to get to yes and people not, she was trying to get to yes. i imagine that was when she found herself in the middle of the firestorm. i don't know if she meant to but she was the center of gravity on pete hegseth. after a weekend at home she thought this is not a good place for me to be. i am up for re-election. i don't want me asking if i support pete hegseth. push out a statement. you can leave me alone and ask others about this guy. the hearing will be brutal. not just a republican hearing, democrats as well. brutal hearing. i would not say he is in the clear but it was important. >> few people write about the

evolution of the republican party. i will ask you a hard question. do you think there is would have been how they would have been approached eight years ago? or is it a sign of trump's takeover? >> strength. >> you had some more extreme figures but by in large these were people pulled from the normal ranks of republican politics and business. that is not the case any more. the fact that he has nominated people that are radial, patel and getting little push back it just slows how much he consolidated his power. >> no question. an interesting time in washington. thank you all. still ahead. talking about this a little bit. syria is back in the spotlight,
