point. and the fact is, there is a level of hucksterism here that the american people seem to be okay with. i mean, i hate to say it because it sounds counterintuitive and it sounds certainly defiant of the ethics and the good taste that a lot of people assumed you would have at the highest levels of government, but this was all, you know, basically previewed in the first administration. this was all out there. i think this is the aesthetic of donald trump, and it is kind of -- i mean, it is a form of populism, in some ways, because the average american person doesn't really look down on the qvc is him of america anti- hucksterism of america as a qualifying thing and it is kind of depressing in a way. that is kind of how they see influence at this point and they think the president should be an extension of it. >> no, i totally agree with you. and tara, "the apprentice", one of the things it did, it may trump a celebrity, and what we have seen since the kennedys, the american people reducing,
4:12 pm
and reducing, and reducing their demands on the presidency. there used to be a demand of a certain high ideal, right? and if not for a few intellectual people, like barack obama, most americans think, if you are the son of a president, george w. bush, we will take you, you know? with donald trump, it literally is the culmination of the celebrity presidency. i don't know that his base will mind if they are up there, stealing for themselves. or, if they are selling the merge on twitter, or using their tiktok shops while they are serving in office and i'm not sure how much the american people will resist this, and i think to mark's point, this is the culture, the presidency us started to live down to the consumerization of everything. >> i would argue, though, that the american people seem to mind a little bit more when it is a democrat and don't seem to mind as much when it is a republican.
4:13 pm
>> oh, for sure. >> and i think ultimately, it is about the ultimate check on both parties, the base of that party. so, democratic voters do care, republican voters do not care. in fact, they are the ones consuming all the merge that donald trump is talking. and i think there is another important point to make for the people who do care, and for the people who do care to share with other people. at the end of the day, the dirty, little secret is that government is ultimately about the distribution of resources. that is what it comes down to, what it boils down to. and the billionaire class -- and i would argue the multimillionaire class in this country -- fundamentally understand that. and part of how they became billionaires and multimillionaires is through government contracts. >> yes. >> the other dirty, little secret. that is also the recipe for how black americans, latinx, a api americans, women are also able to move up. so, you see them -- and i will take this back to dei -- that is why you see them dismantling those requirements for women on businesses, for
4:14 pm
women owned businesses, for black-owned businesses, that the government has been putting in place, it is to concentrate all the money to them. the other thing that they do, the other dirty, little secret, and maybe not so much of a dirty, little secret for people watching this show, is that they get into these positions, they give money, they donate money to campaigns, they host a private fundraiser, $500,000 a plate, and they sit in a room and they offer a wish list. a lot of times, what that wish list is, is changing the barrier of entry, so no one else can get into the market. i am a small business owner, and what they do, they fight for legislation that stops people like me from being able to get into certain opportunities. and so, i think that is so dangerous about what is happening right now, the average ceo pay in this country in 2023, pay ratio to the employee, was 268:1. that is going to get worse. what people like elon musk want to do, is they want to take
4:15 pm
over parts of the government so they control it and they get all the funding that goes to things like nasa. spacex will get to take over that. that's what people need to understand. >> and that is such an important point, because at the same time that there has been this dumbing down of what a president has ought to be, he is entertaining them and his base literally doesn't care if they never get anything, if he doesn't bring progress, i'm not sure they would care. but, there is a sliver of voters who do. there are the swing voters, mark, who are very much focused on economics. they voted on him even if they weren't enthusiastic trumpeters, they voted specifically on bringing prices down and i feel like that is the venn diagram between left and right, of people who are mad as hell at unitedhealthcare, the people who are mad at billionaires, the people who are sick and tired of what they see as a giant gripped by billionaires. when they are now watching that happen at the highest level of government, and the people who are supposed to be bouncing the government literally grifting while they are suffering, i think those are the people that
4:16 pm
will care big time. people like peter thiel out there sweating bullets, talking about the american healthcare murder, because i think they can see that eventually, you end up with a french revolution kind of situation. >> i mean, look, it is obviously -- it is a big jump. no one wants to see that. >> no! >> but, what the standard is, the standard, though, is that president's will behave in a certain way, and the question is, what kind of standard are democrats, republicans, any citizens, going to hold their presidents too? because yes, i do think there is a double standard between what democrats expect of their leaders and what republicans expect. i think i 100% agree with that. but, i also think there is this kind of mythmaking around the trump machine that salesmanship equates to leadership. look, he is the guy that plays the rich guy on tv, so that is going to be enough and we are
4:17 pm
just going to assume that he knows what he is doing and he is going to make our grocery prices go down. i mean, it's not -- people don't think very hard about this, obviously. i think, ultimately, that is sort of -- i certainly wouldn't say "genius," but that is the formula of donald trump's political career, which is just to sort of perpetuate the myth and hope people don't ask too many questions. >> if people want to understand why people like mitch mcconnell, who privately despised donald trump and tell everyone off the record that they despise him, claim to him anyway, is because the greatest trick that the superrich can ever pull, is number one, take over the government themselves, just own it themselves, and also convince broke people that the interests of the superrich are their interests, too. and donald trump is the perfect salesman for that. forgetting people who don't have money to believe that giving people like donald trump all the money they want will help them. great trick, republicans pulled it and they got their man, that is why they love them. mark, tara, thank you both so much. coming up, the alarming news about trump's cabinet picks goes on, and on, and on.

the new york times is reporting that kennedy's lawyer, a noted vaccine skeptic, aaron siri, joined kennedy in questioning and choosing candidates for top health positions. deepening concerns about vaccine hesitancy taking the wheel and driving us back to when we had to be concerned about diseases like the measles, diphtheria, and polio. the new york times adds that in 2022, he petitioned the government to revoke its approval of the polio vaccine, saying that because the clinical trials relied upon to license this product does not include a control group, the fda, therefore, must either withdraw or suspend the approval of this project, adding, "it is likely and wrongly believed that this product can prevent infection and transmission." late today, rfk jr.'s spokesperson responded to this report, telling nbc news in a statement that "the polio vaccine should be available to the public and thoroughly and properly studied."
4:24 pm
"and properly studied." it is worth a reminder that by the mid-20th century, polio was killing or paralyzing over half 1 million people a year around the world. but, after the vaccine became widely available, cases decreased by a reported 99% since 1988, which helped to prevent an estimated 20 million cases of paralysis in children. before the vaccine, polio afflicted many unnamed people, and some people you are familiar with, like fdr. and in more recent history, senator mitch mcconnell, who was treated for polio as a child. now, ahead of the transition, some fear that history is starting to look more like a prequel, with noted vaccine skeptics in an administration filled with multimillionaires and billionaires, people who may look at diseases as a way to turn a profit, people gearing up to make america go back to worrying about communicable diseases, as if trump's handling of covid wasn't bad enough. joining me now is dr. irwin red letter, nbc news public health

that polio vaccine prevents polio and the other vaccines prevent the other diseases. i think there is a conflict here where they think that somehow, requiring children to get these life-saving vaccines, will somehow violate their freedom or their parents' freedom to make a choice. and it is not that, at all. we are talking about the public's health. if your kid is not going to get vaccinated and many other kids are not going to get vaccinated, that actually puts a lot of other people at risk. so, you know, if you break your leg and you don't want to get treated for it, i'm sorry for you. but, if you don't get vaccinated, you are not just endangering your self or your child, you are endangering my children and my grandchildren. and that is what the senators really need to realize. i wish i could sit down with all of them, joy, and just say, "listen, we understand the freedom issue, we are not disputing that.
